The winner of this year’s edition is a 400 level Biochemistry student of UNILAG. He is a technology enthusiast; he is always involved in tech related activities and he participates in tech related conferences/seminars from time to time. He loves wristwatches and was once involved in wristwatch retailing. He is also good at selling things. He has assisted family and friends in selling their phones and other products.

He participated in the previous edition of this competition and got to the final stage, but he did not win. He didn’t allow that to discourage him as he applied once again with the hope that he will win. He didn’t give up and it has paid off!

This should be an inspiration to every participant not to give up, whether or not you won something.

He scored 75.0% in the first stage and 80% in the second stage, with an average score of 77.5%

This is a success story. You are celebrated.

The winner of the 3rd edition of the Xfire Nairaland Undergraduate Quiz Competition is

eWyse

The 1st runner up is a 200 level Mechanical Engineering student of UNILAG. Aside academics, he is particularly interested in writing. He has his own blog where he writes contemporary articles. He also belongs to Insight Network, a network of young writers and poets alike. He loves reading as well as his favourite author is the great Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
He loves to explore, try new things and expand his horizon. He is also a big fan of innovations in technology. He hopes to be an aeronautic engineer someday.

He scored 70.0% and 81.7% in the first and second stage tests respectively, averaging a score of 75.8%.

The 2nd runners up is no one else but

I move over to the 2nd runner up (3rd best). He is a 500 level Medicine student of UNIBEN. He is a living example of those who believe that perseverance pays, as he participated in the previous edition although he didn’t emerge as a winner after the 3rd stage test. Yet he demonstrated the spirit of sportsmanship.

He scored 66.7% and 83.3% in the first and second test respectively, with an average score of 75.0%

He loves watching football and making new friends. The 3rd best student for this edition is no one else but…

Now to the 4th and 5th best student…………………
The 4th and 5th position was a very competitive one. This is because both candidates had the same average score and finished both tests within the same timeframe. A tie breaker (3rd test) was conducted exclusively for both of them to decide who would be ahead of the other.

The 4th position goes to a 400 level Medicine and Surgery student of UI, Ifelove1 (1st: 63.3%, 2nd: 81.7%, average score: 72.5%, tie breaker test: 80%).

The 5th position goes to a 100 level Vet Medicine student of UI, Nltaliban (1st: 70.0%, 2nd: 75.0%, average score: 72.5%, tie breaker test: 70%)

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ifelove1 and Nltaliban have won cash prizes of N30,000 and N27,500 respectively. PM me please to get your cash.

Before I start the countdown, I will not forget the labour of all students that registered and participated in the competition. I am aware of the sacrifices some might have passed through to write the test(s). I acknowledge the hard work put in by all. I understand the anxiety grin I must say: whether or not you emerge as a top 30 student, you are a WINNER. There are no losers as this gives everyone of you an opportunity to learn and improve. It also gives you an insight on how competitive the corporate and business worlds are. That way, you can be better prepared. Kudos to all of you.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL PARTICIPANTS.

I hope to see some of you next year (for those who are not yet in their finals).

Hello everyone,

All is set for the announcement of winners for the 3rd edition of the Xfire Nairaland Undergraduate Scholarship Program after a very competitive and rigorous set of tests!

The 3rd edition is an improvement over earlier editions both in terms of the coordination and the cash prizes. Through the assistance of the co-sponsors namely smeag0l,, abike12 and other anonymous contributors, we were able to increase the total cash reward for this edition from of N187,500 to N512,500 for the top 30 students. Another sponsor, InvertedHammer has also pledged to reward the overall winner. God bless all sponsors. Your support is very much appreciated by everyone including the coordinators and all students that have participated in the competition.

I will also want to appreciate the outstanding coordinators led by Richiez and ably supported by Odunharry and dejt4u for the smooth coordination and oversight. The level of energy and passion they have put into this program is very amazing despite having full time work activities that keep them busy. The great effort they put in behind the scenes is indescribable. Kudos my ogas.

I will also like to thank Seun for creating the online platform to be able to achieve this, and also the super mod lalasticlala for ever pushing this to front page thus giving the program the publicity it deserves.

The 3rd edition all started with the thread for registration, of which 843 registrations were received. See link below:

https://www.nairaland.com/4951170/annual-xfire-nairaland-undergraduate-quiz

707 candidates were eventually shortlisted for the competition. This is a significant increase over the number shortlisted in the previous edition (~473) Two stages of tests were conducted to determine the top 30. The first test was conducted on 23rd January, 2018 out of which 79 candidates scaled through to the next stage based on a pass mark of 55%. A 2nd test was conducted on 25th January 2018 to determine the top 30.

https://www.nairaland.com/4970313/2019-xfire-nairaland-undergraduate-scholarship

The winners were decided based on the cumulative of the first and second tests. When there are ties, the candidates that completed both tests in the shorted duration were picked. In a particular case, there was a tie and both candidates timed out on both tests. A short tie breaker was used to determine who came ahead of the other.

The top 30 students will be awarded as follows:

Winner: N190, 000 (excluding a pledge of an undisclosed amount by InvertedHammer)

1st Runner Up: N100, 000

2nd Runner Up: N65, 000

4th best: N30,000

5th best: N27, 500

6th to 15th best: N7, 000

16th to 20th best: N3,000

21st to 30th best: N1,000 airtime

Stay tuned and watch the countdown…

Yet another great news for the winners of the 3rd edition of Xfire Undergraduate Scholarship.

Another sponsor, smeag0l has redeemed his pledge of 150k. He also authorized how the money is to be distributed amongst the first 15 winners. Based on this, the updated cash award is as follows:

Winner: N200, 000 (excluding a pledge of an undisclosed amount by a sponsor)

1st Runner Up: N100, 000

2nd Runner Up: N65, 000

4th best: N30,000

5th best: N27, 500

6th to 15th best: N7, 000

16th to 30th best: N1,000 airtime

I want to thank all the current and past sponsors once again: smeag0l, mayflowa, abike12, Inverted Hammer and the anonymous contributors.

This edition is actually the most rewarding financially so far. I envy the winners wink

Winners will be announced on Monday evening.

UPDATE

Based on the request of one of the sponsors smeag0l, the cash distribution has been updated such that the 16th to 20th best will have an increment in their cash award:

Winner: N190, 000 (excluding a pledge of an undisclosed amount by a sponsor)

1st Runner Up: N100, 000

2nd Runner Up: N65, 000

4th best: N30,000

5th best: N27, 500

6th to 15th best: N7, 000

16th to 20th best: N3,000

21st to 30th best: N1,000 airtime

This was solely on the request of smeag0l (no input from me). He probably considered the plea from some of candidates for the 16th - 30th placed students.

Thanks once again smeag0l.

I'm impressed with this year competition. No issues as such except for error on the part of the participants. I'm also impressed with the distribution of the prizes. In a competition like this, one of the ways to encourage people to compete well is by making the prize of the winner attractive. This the organizers have been able to achieve. I'm impressed. I will want to be involved in next edition through sponsorship. God bless the organizers. God bless the participants.

@ emboldened. Exactly! Thanks to the co-sponsors that helped us achieve that. It has to be highly competitive and at the same time very rewarding for the winner.

You are welcome as a co-sponsor for next year's edition. Looking forward to that. God bless you too

I've checked out the other years of this competition and it seems that people in higher levels are the ones that have been wining it

I hope me that just enter university ending of last year and is in 100 level has a real chance of winning this

Lol. Wrong analysis.

The people who won it are those who excelled the most. If you beat every other person, you will win it irrespective of your level. So aim for the top wink

Interesting idea. A quick one, I read through the 1st page and I think it is a rule for most NNPC/joint scholarships that recipients of an award cannot receive another award except if the rule has changed. I noticed it was stated that the 1st position last year was a recipient of 2 different awards (I don't know if there is any of the Oil and Gas scholarships in what the winner had) and I will like we put this into consideration going forward if the rule hasn't changed.

Please, what account can I send my little token of support to?
Regards.

Thanks for offering to support. I will send you a PM.

Thus, the updated cash reward is shown on the quoted mail. The winner will now go home with 120,000 while the cash rewards of other categories have been improved upon.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Getting A Job In The Oil Industry With A Third Class: How Possible? by xfire: 9:23am On Apr 30, 2018
Strong connection on its own will not get a third class graduate into the oil and gas industry except you are referring to local ajegunle or ojuelegba oil and gas business run by one man. Who told you those with first and even 2nd class upper do not have connections too?

Can a fresh third class graduate make it into the industry? The answer is NO, not just in Nigeria but anywhere in world. Connection won't help. Schlumberger, ExxonMobil, even our own Sahara Energy or Lekoil won't ordinarily recruit a 3rd class graduate. Most of these companies have recruitment policies and won't ordinarily violate them, even for contract staffing. The world is saturated with first class and 2.1 grads with good MSc that also have good connections such that considering a third class graduate is near impossible if not outrightly impossible. They may be one or two exceptions (like any other situation in life) but it doesn't change the fact that it is a general NO.

That being said, does it mean a 3rd class graduate can never make it to the industry in the course of his or her career? Of course it is possible. As you garner experience and learn specific skills, the influence of your degree on getting a job lessens. Most shopfloor offshore or onshore jobs like plant operator, roundabouts, crane operators, rope access technicians, scaffolders, divers, etc do not require university degree. They are learnt trade or skills with associated certifications.

In addition, as you gain accumulative experience of over 10 years, the influence of your degree wanes significantly. For a civil engineering graduate, I will advise him to either:

(1) change career path entirely and learn a skill that is useful in the oil industry (he may not find fulfillment cos there is hardly career growth in this route)

(2) Gain structural engineering experience and hope to join the oil industry in another 8 to 10 years.

Even then, it is still not a guarantee. Like jarushub said, it is best not to be fixated on the oil and gas industry.

Cheers!
