I implore the aggrieved to please go back and read the criteria for selection for selection set by the coordinators. One of them was that candidates must have made at least a minimum of 6 posts prior to Jan 11, 2018 (date of commencement of the quiz).

I am sorry but 2 of the top candidates didn't meet that selection criterium. They shouldn't have been shortlisted in the first place. The quality of shortlisting is one of the areas I have identified for further improvement in subsequent editions. I regret any inconvenience. They will still be eligible next time.

Please note that I insisted that the initial criteria for selection set by the coordinators be adhered to (must have registered before June 2017 and must have posted a minimum of 6 times prior to 11th January 2018 when the quiz was announced). A total of 4 candidates were disqualified during the verification process:

2 candidates who initially made the top 15 cut were disqualified on my request to stick to the initial criteria. They shouldn't have been selected in the first place. Hopefully, we will improve on quality of our initial screening / shortlisting of candidates in subsequent editions.

In addition, one candidate was disqualified on account of dual identity (different persons using the same moniker), while another was disqualified because evidence shows he has more or less graduated.

Buh please help us do the breakdown of how the final score was calculated o... Is like I don't understand this thing again o.

The 3rd (final) test was the sole determinant. However, where there are ties in the 3rd test scores, we used the aggregate scores the candidates obtained in the other 2 tests to decide who is above or below.

Now to all participants….

I will like to thank you all for your patience and endurance. I must confess, this edition was much more rigorous than the previous one. I sincerely believe every participant is a winner irrespective of whether we emerge as one of the top 15 participants or not.

The questions were tougher, the selection criteria were stiffer, verification process was much more intense and additional checks were put in place to ensure fairness. To have passed through all these, you are a winner, no doubt.

The essence of this scholarship is to promote academic excellence and competitiveness. We are committed to contributing our own little quota to improving the educational standard in Nigeria. To that end, we have the moral right to ensure fairness and a level playing field for all the participants as much as we can, within the limits of online assessment which is not physically supervised. That was what led to the conduct of a 3rd (final) test to decide the winners.

Lemme say categorically that there will be no need to conduct a 3rd stage test in subsequent editions as we will improve on this edition. However, the conduct of a 2nd stage test, a great idea from the coordinators, has come to stay.

All your feedbacks (both positive and negative) are well received. We used a better test platform this year resulting in significant reduction in number of candidates having issues accessing the platform compared to the last edition. I honestly empathize with the few who had connection issues. However, the onus lies on the candidates to ensure they use good gadgets and stay in locations where internet availability is strong.

Irrespective of the test method, only 15 candidates can emerge top and only 1 can emerge overall winner. So I implore all candidates to take the result in the spirit of sportsmanship. smiley

A STANDING OVATION FOR ALL THE PARTICIPANTS!!!!!

First of all, I will like to thank the coordinators of the competition, Richiez and Odunharry. They have done wonderfully well organizing this. They also handled all enquiries and feedbacks with outstanding maturity. They have worked tirelessly and their effort is not been driven by pecuniary gains.

From the information at my disposal, I can objectively say this competition was an improvement in terms of standards, fairness and level playing field. The introduction of a 2nd test, a novel initiative of Richiez, is a wonderful idea and has come to stay.

Richiez is a very great intellect. On a lighter mood, when I saw the test questions, I was like ‘thank God this dude does not work in JAMB’. If that dude works in JAMB, students will pray and fast to get 150/400. grin Well done for organizing all the tests. Odunharry is a workhorse, always ready to provide assistance and get things done.

I will also like to recognize dejt4u, a past coordinator who provided support from time to time wink

Of course, there were a number of areas for improvement. That will be worked on going forward.

I hope we will do this again next year. Wouldn’t have wished for better coordinators. God will make us all bigger.

A big round of applause for the coordinators!!

Good day all,

The hour has come to announce and reward the deserved winners of the 2nd Edition of the Xfire Nairaland Undergraduate Scholarship Competition after a very rigorous exercise!

More than 470 students signified interest and registered for the competition. Find below link to registration:

https://www.nairaland.com/4280842/annual-xfire-nairaland-undergraduate-quiz

The first test was conducted on 23rd January, 2018 out of which 67 candidates scaled through to the next stage based on a pass mark of 45%. See link below:

https://www.nairaland.com/4299199/shortlisted-candidates-2018-xfire-nland

A 2nd test was conducted on 27th January 2018 and subsequently a final (3rd) test was conducted on 10th February 2018 to serve as the decider. See link below:

https://www.nairaland.com/4308525/2nd-edition-xfire-nairaland-scholarship

The winners were decided based on highest scores in the 3rd test. Where there are ties, the average score of the 1st and 2nd test was used to rank the candidates.

A total of the top 15 students will be awarded as follows:

Winner – N100,000

1st Runner Up – N45,000

2nd Runner Up – N35,000

4th and 5th best – N10,000 each

6th to 15th best – N1,000 recharge card vouchers / top-up each

I will also like to use this opportunity to thank Mayflowa who contributed N50,000 which led to an upward adjustment of the initial cash prizes (winner – 70k to 100k, 1st Runner Up – 40k to 45k, 2nd Runner Up – 30k to 35k). This also ensures the 6th to 15th placed students go home with N1,000 recharge card each.

We will announce the winners today (hopefully before champions league cos even me sef wan watch ball cheesy)

Ongoing verification clearly shows that some of the top 15 participants engaged in one form malpractice or another. This has further delayed announcement. We have the moral duty to ensure the most deserving winners emerge to the best of our capacity. Thus we will ONLY be relying on the 3rd test to decide the top 15 to ensure the most deserving winners emerge.

The selection criteria will also be strictly adhered to.

All these bottlenecks will be addressed in subsequent editions, so there won't be a repeat.

On behalf of myself and the coordinators, I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience but it is with sincere heart and good intentions.

Fellas, I think the organizers are trying their best to get the right winners, they also have other things to do other than organize the competition.

Maybe there's a problem under the hood we are not aware of, but they are trying. Rememeber participation is free and they are actually gonna be the one to spend their resources and have been putting in effort without any pay. That's kinda rare in our Nigeria.

Thanks a lot for the response. I guess the coordinators (Richiez and Odunharry) appreciate all the feedbacks, whether positive or negative. They have done an amazing job. Appreciate everyone's patience too.

Just to clarify on the issue of selection of winners, the coordinators have since finalized the list of 15 deserved winners and communicated same to me. I'm hoping they will start contacting them as soon as possible so as to draw this competition to a successful close.

I've just been granted a loan of 1 million naira from my uncle, please dear Nairaland family what kind of business can I invest with the money, I reside in Lagos. I was looking into opening up a little Boutique, but I still need wise business ideas from you guys, thanks.
Boutique is a nice idea.
You can open a barbing salon or restaurant too at a good location, though barbing salon might be the cheaper option. If the shop space is big enough, you can combine it with hair making salon for females.
Career / Re: I Want To Quit My Job And Live On My Savings by xfire: 2:25pm On Feb 04, 2018
sabanageorge:
Please no bad words.

I have a sizable number of investments. Every month I make about 400k from my investments. I also invested in crypto. The market has been crazy these past weeks, but even with the recession I have about $100k. But I have not cashed out. I don't want to. I want to keep it till year's end, when it may be bigger or maybe zero. who knows.
Then I have my job, which isn't bad, which has earned me all of this. But I'm getting tired of it already and I want to quit. Hoping to live on the 400k I make every month from my investments and a possible larger payout from crypto by the end of the year. What do you think?

Just a few words of advice.
Have you thought of the following....

(1) Do you have a house of your own or are you payin rent?
(2) How secure are those investments that yield 400k?
(3) Do you have a family with kids? Are your kids all grown up or still in school? This is a major factor in any decision you wanna take.

Sincerely 400k is not a lot of money to live on forever. Inflation rate in Nigeria is quite high. That amount will pale into insignificance in a few years time if you don't grow your investments.

Nice one from Xfire,Richiez, Odunharry and the entire coordinating team.. Thanks so much for the opportunity, the question just dey somehow.. #lolz.. I have a little observation/opinion. I hope this can be look into! anyways, I've been enjoying some comments on here... Repping team Lautech

I do actually. We have already written 2 tests and we are expected to write a 3rd one in 2 weeks time without even knowing where we stand. I might as well give up on it. I don't want to seem ungrateful but most of us have spent a lot on data because of this quiz. Expecting us to write another quiz in 2 weeks time without knowing where we stand is just not fair.
Let me address this. Richiez, the hardworking coordinator has told you and all the other candidates exactly where you stand. Where you stand is this:

Richiez:

What's most important is that with the 3rd test, all 67 candidates now have a fresh chance to win something...take this stage seriously.

Good morning all

First of all, I will like to thank you to everyone that has participated in the test thus far. It has not been an easy journey. Everybody is a winner irrespective of whether we emerge best in this quiz or not.

I will also like to appreciate the coordinators. It has not been an easy task. Coordinating almost 500 entries is a herculean task but they have done excellently well.

We have almost reached the end of the competition. There was a general improvement in the 2nd stage as against the 1st stage. As a result of this, there were lots of ties in the first 15 positions. It was quite difficult to break the ties for some peculiar reasons and after much deliberation between me and the coordinators, we have agreed to have a final (3rd stage) test.

The thoroughly screened list of shortlisted (authentic) candidates and the instructions for FINAL test will be made known by the coordinators in a separate thread. Thank you all for your patience and please stay tuned.

Cheers,
xfire
