The suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu has denied claims that he failed to account for the interest in the N550 billion recovered funds kept in the custody of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Over the weekend, the Final Report of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Recovered Assets (PCARA) surfaced and it showed how interest rates accruing from N550 billion recovered by the anti-graft agency from the period from May 2015 to May 2020. According to the report, “Failure to report on the interest on actual lodgments clearly establishes that interest element of over N550 billion has been re-looted relating to the period under review.” Magu’s Defence On Sunday, Magu, through his lawyer, Wahab Shittu said such recovered fund kept with the CBN do not generate interest. “It is falsehood that Magu placed N550 billion recovered loot into a deposit account. Manchester City to play in Champions League football next season after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) lifted a two-season ban from European competitions imposed by UEFA on Monday. Manchester City were handed the suspension by UEFA’s club financial control body in February for “serious breaches” of club licensing and financial fair play regulations. The Premier League club vehemently denied any wrongdoing and appealed the decision at CAS last month, after previously describing the UEFA disciplinary process as “prejudicial”. Manchester City were accused of deliberately inflating the value of income from sponsors with links to the Abu Dhabi United Group, also owned by City owner Sheikh Mansour, to avoid falling foul of financial fair play (FFP) regulations between 2012 and 2016. The case against Manchester City was reopened when German magazine Der Spiegel published a series of leaked emails in 2018. Following the outcry of citizens against the recent increase in the price of petrol from N123.50 to N143.8, the federal government of Nigeria has explained that there was never a promise to permanently subsidize oil price. Timipreye Sylva, the Minister of State for petroleum, noted that it has become unrealistic in the face of prevailing economic developments to continue to subsidize the price of petrol. He also added that at no time did the government promise to reduce the price of petrol and keep it permanently low. The Minister, who lamented the inability of the country to attract the level of investments needed in the refining sector of its oil, said the government can no longer bear the burden of subsidizing the price for local consumption of PMS to the tune of trillions of Naira every year. Sylva added in his statement on Thursday that the government intends to deregulate the petroleum sector, withdraw from being the main supplier of the product and allow the private sector takeover while the government only plays the role of regulation. It is obvious that the dust raised about late former Governor Ajimobi will remain in the air for sometime but I want to itemize why some things can never add up because of how the APC mishandled the public, in their characteristic manner of lying and serial deceits. Deniability and prevarication are two major characteristics of the party and they are evident in this particular case. RUMOUR OF AJIMOBI SICKNESS When the rumoured sickness of former Governor Ajimobi filtered into the public space in early June, the news was detailed about what happened and the hospital he was admitted to. However, the denial came and we were told Ajimobi is hale and hearty, with many pictures and videos to proof same. Alas, they were all lies. The investigative journalists insisted he is in critical condition but the family through the media aide only kept to the denial. So, while the public believed Ajimobi was sick, the family and party insisted he is okay. Members of a kidnap syndicate, who allegedly killed three of their victims after collecting N7.5m ransom from their family members have been arrested by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team. DCP Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in Abuja on Monday while parading 26 suspects arrested for kidnapping, armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and other sundry offences. He mentioned that the group abducted one Dr Audu Benedict, his son and a friend of the family, who were on their way to Abuja. According to the Punch, the suspects were said to have contacted the families of their victims, who subsequently paid N7m to secure their release while in captivity. “Before the ransom was paid, the suspects forced Benedict to raise a cheque of N500,000, which was successfully cashed,” Mba stated. He, however, regretted that the syndicate went ahead to kill their victims, notwithstanding the ransom. He stated, “Among the suspects, we have a kidnap syndicate that specialises in terrorising people of the North-Central zone. “A ransom of N7m was paid by the family of Dr Audu Benedict. While in captivity, the doctor also raised a cheque of N500,000, bringing the total to N7.5m. – By Reuben Abati Except something else occurs that grabs the headlines and dominates Nigerian social media, the big news of the past week would probably be the death of Senator Abiola Ajimobi and the political drama that it has generated. Senator Ajimobi served as a Senator between 2003 -2007. He was Governor of Oyo State between 2011 – 2015, 2015- 2019. He achieved the distinction of being the first Governor in that state to be elected for a second term in office. He broke the jinx. His tenure as Governor was quite controversial with mixed results and divided opinions. He was a very frank and outspoken Governor who was also very conscious of his social status and the powers attached to his office. He was also quite audacious. He engaged the Olubadan in an open battle when he chose in one instance to transform some high chiefs of the Olubadan-in-council into beaded kings. There was also his infamous confrontation with students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) who had stormed Government House to protest the prolonged closure of their school. Ajimobi hushed the students up and told them harshly that they should remember that they were in the presence of “the Constituted Authority” of Oyo State. The Oyo State Government under his watch owed arrears of salaries. By the general election of 2019, his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) stood no chance in the elections. It was generally believed that the “Constituted Authority” had alienated the people he governed so much they were bound to reject the country’s ruling party in the state. As expected, the APC lost the Gubernatorial election to the rival, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) whose flag-bearer Engr. Seyi Makinde is the incumbent Governor of the state. In 2019, Ajimobi also sought election into the Senate. Nigeria’s Upper Chamber is increasingly an old people’s home for retired Governors. But he lost the Oyo South Senatorial bid to the candidate, again, of the PDP. He took his case to the Election Petition Tribunal. He lost again. In the face of this rejection, the APC consoled itself with the conclusion that the performance of their party in Oyo state did not amount to a rejection of the APC by the people, but a rejection of Ajimobi’s politics! The same party would later reward Ajimobi with the position of Deputy National Chairman, South West. His admirers insist that he was a hero, a bridge-builder, and an illustrious Ibadan son and politician who made his own contributions to the development of his state and country. His style may just have been a bit brash, they admit. Man lives. He dies. It is in the nature of all living things to die. Human experiences like love, achievements, social status can bring an individual much fulfilment, but death is the biggest event of our lives. It defines our mortality. It is arbitrary and tragic, because it marks the end of everything. It is not a form of completion, because nobody ever completes life, even a man of 100 still nurses hope, but with death, everything is finished. Death does not grant the dead a say in what happens to him or her: but there is a form of survival to it. Read more===https://thestreetjournal.org/2020/06/the-politics-of-senator-ajimobis-death/

Agreements have been made by FC Barcelona to sell Brazil midfielder Arthur Melo to Juventus for the sum of 72 million euros (80.98 million dollars). Arthur joined Barca from Brazilian side Gremio in July 2018 and was initially hailed as the heir to former club great Xavi Hernandez. Lionel Messi had said then that he was surprised by the player’s similarities to the side’s former puppet mast But in spite of a promising opening spell, Arthur made only 19 league starts in his first season with the club and 14 this campaign. The transfer helps Barca meet their target of a further 70 million euros in revenues from player sales before June 30. This is in line with the budget the club’s members approved last October which forecast income of 124 million euros from transfers. The La Liga title-holders said in a statement on Monday, they however have gone on to sign Bosnian Miralem Pjanic from the Italian champions for 60 million euros. The 23-year-old Aurther, will remain at the Camp Nou until the end of the 2019/2020 season before moving to Turin. This however has been extended until August, because of the coronavirus pandemic. At the end of the campaign, pjanic 30, will also move to the Camp Nou . He will sign a four-year contract containing a release clause of 400 million euros, Barca’s statement said, adding that the Bosnian’s transfer fee was worth an additional five million in variables. Alex Kueng (pronounced king), one of the ex police officers accused of abetting murder in the death of George Floyd, is an African-American. Specifically, he has a part of Nigerian ancestry, his father was Nigerian and his mother is a Caucasian American. He had recently enlisted to be a cop, much to the disagreement of his family, to, according to him, ”try to change the bad policing system” in Minneapolis. Alas, only 3 days on the job, he was caught up in that system and now potentially faces 40 years in jail if convicted. His two siblings, who are adopted Blacks, have indicated to change their last name to dissociate with the “Keung” family name. New York Times reported that while Mr Floyd, whose name has been painted on murals and scrawled on protest signs, has been laid to rest, Mr Kueng, who faces charges of aiding and abetting in Mr Floyd’s death, is out on bail, hounded at the supermarket by strangers and denounced by some family members. Long before Mr Kueng was arrested, he had wrestled with the issue of police abuse of black people, joining the force in part to help protect people close to him from police aggression. He argued that diversity could force change in a Police Department long accused of racism. He had seen one sibling arrested and treated poorly, in his view, by sheriff’s deputies. He had found himself defending his decision to join the police force, saying he thought it was the best way to fix a broken system. He had clashed with friends over whether public demonstrations could actually make things better. “He said, ‘Don’t you think that that needs to be done from the inside?’” his mother, Joni Kueng, recalled him saying after he watched protesters block a highway years ago. Gernot Rohr, the manager of the Nigeria national football team who signed a new two-and-a-half-year deal with the Nigerian Football Federation in May, has revealed that his future at the control of affairs is linked to a successful Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in 2021. Rohr has continued to overlook outfield players from the NPFL in his team, a decision that has raised eyebrows. Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr stated in clear terms that players from the Nigerian Professional Football League are not satisfactory for his team. Only Heartland keeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa has been able to break into the German tactician’s squad in the past five years, since he became the coach of the national team. Gernot Said during an interview with Morgenweb.com when asked his reasons for snubbing players from the NPFL team. “Because they are not good enough and because I have better ones,” Rohr replied “There are so many good players in Europe. I have invited more than 20 local players since 2016. If they are good, sooner or later they all end up in Europe. “The qualification for the Africa Cup 2021 and the World Cup 2022 in Qatar are the goals now. Until after the World Cup, that is until December 31, 2022. “It (my contract) is linked to a successful Africa Cup of Nations.” The 2021 AFCON was initially scheduled for January 9, 2021, to February 6, 2021. the Executive Committee members of the Confederation of African Football will meet Tuesday to decide on new dates for their showpiece event. The qualifiers have already been postponed, with only two rounds of matches played, while the 2022 World Cup qualifiers are slated for October and November. “No, not yet precise. Hopefully in September, but then without spectators. We are talking about postponing the Africa Cup of Nations from the beginning of the year to the summer. That would be good.” He admitted that luring the quartet Joshua Zirkzee, Kevin Akpoguma, Jordan Torunarigha and Felix Uduokhai to play for the Eagles won’t be easy. “Zirkzee is a preferred candidate, but it’s not that simple. We cannot and will not poach him, that must come from the player himself,” he added. “There are a few others in the Bundesliga like Kevin Akpoguma in Hoffenheim, Jordan Torunarigha at Hertha BSC and Felix Uduokhai in Augsburg. But we can’t get them so easily. Rohr also stated that he rejected offers from Mali and Congo to sign a new deal with the NFF. Among the long standing vices of the society ravaging the lives and destinies of its victims is cultism. Even worse is the adverse effect cultist have on the security in academic institutions, the society and other areas in which they operate. Early this week, a victim who narrowly escaped death, narrated his gory experience with a group of different fraternities while he was in school. “This is my true story and I advise people to learn from this and stay away from cultism. “I was 19 when I got admitted into the Delta State University, Abraka to Study Geology . I had a cousin I had to put up with due to accommodation issues as my parents are poor and couldn’t afford it at the time. “They had to borrow to pay my tuition and acceptance fees. Reading geology was very expensive as I had to pay for field works, books and all other materials. “I struggled through my first year into my second. My cousin then dropped out of school due to financial issues. I was left all alone in Abraka and I made new friends . I had a girlfriend in school then and we call her Joy ( not her real name ). Joy was also dating a cultist ( A member of VIKINGS) . I got a call from Joy that I should come to her hostel and we should pass the night together. She told me she prepared my favorite food and I rushed down like a hungry lion. I got to her house and we had a good time and even had sex. “At around 9pm, I heard a loud bang on her door and I asked who the person was, “YOU DEY CRAZE, NA YOU GET THE ROOM, JOY COME OUTSIDE I WAN SEE YOU”, that was the voice I heard behind the door. I looked at the time and it was late in the night .I picked up my phone to call a friend to come get me as I sensed danger but my phone went dead. I then sat down in the room and she assured me that all is fine. She went out to meet the guy and they argued loudly and some other boys came in and joined them. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a document tagged, “What you need to know about the Nigeria Economic Sustainability Plan” made available to journalists in Abuja on Thursday. The plan was developed by the Economic Sustainability Committee chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and established by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), earlier in March. Adesina listed eight key interventions as stated in the plan to include mass agricultural programme, infrastructure, informal sector support, business support for MSMEs, technology, expansion of National Social Investment Programmes, cut non-essential spending and support for state governments. As part of ways to cut non-essential spending, Adesina said only ambulances, fire-fighting vehicles and other essentials are exempted from the ban on the purchase of vehicles. He said, “The President has approved the implementation of the report on the rationalisation of government agencies. “The NESP will also target a reduction in average production costs of crude oil. “Also, the Integrated Personnel and Payment Information System will be expanded to cover all Federal Government’s MDAs. “Non-critical and administrative capital spending will be eliminated, including purchase of vehicles (except for ambulances, fire-fighting vehicles and other essentials).” He added that the Economic Sustainability Committee would monitor the implementation of the plan while the Vice President will regularly brief the President on progress made.
