Between Friday and Saturday, over 150 people who reportedly died in Kano have been buried in three cemeteries, heightening fears that the deceased must have died as a result of a strange ailment. Undertakers who doubled as grave diggers in the affected cemeteries said the frequency at which they received corpses these days was unusual when compared with the number of people they buried before the coronavirus outbreak. Police Arrest 15 Suspects for Allegedly Violating Lockdown Order in Kano State The figure of the dead buried in the three cemeteries excludes other people buried in dozens of burial grounds in the eight local government areas that constitute Kano metropolis, though those working in such cemeteries said they did not notice anything unusual. Also, authorities in Kano, community leaders, families of the deceased and medical officials have given different opinion on the matter. The state ministry of health mentioned that it was investigating the matter. However, the effect of the pandemic has thrown many residents of the city into palpable fears even as they nurse the suspicion of possible community transmission of the ravaging COVID-19 within the state capital, which has a population of over four million people. Out of the 44 local government areas in Kano State, eight of them are not far from the state capital. They are Nasarawa, Gwale, Dala, Ungogo, Fagge, Tarauni, Kumbotso and Municipal. As of Monday, April 20, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said Kano had a total of 59 confirmed COVID-19 cases and one death. Attendants at graveyards say burials scary Attendants and undertakers across the three cemeteries that witnessed unusual burials described the current regularity of burials in the city as unprecedented, urging the government to as a matter of urgency investigate to ascertain the real cause. Bashir Mohammed, one of the undertakers at the Dandolo Cemetery in Goron Dutse, Dala Local Government Area of Kano State, said, “This is worrisome, we are becoming overwhelmed by what we are seeing here these days because to me, the way people are dying is not ordinary.” Mohammed popularly known as Mai Sana’a, said between Saturday and Sunday, over thirty people were buried in the cemetery in contrast to maximum daily record of ten burials previously. Mohammed said most of the people buried within the period were aged cutting across both sexes. Similarly, at Abattoir Cemetery near Kofar Mazugal, our reporters were told that 61 persons had been buried in the cemetery over the weekend. The cemetery attendants who disclosed this said most of the deaths were from Zage, Darma, Sharifai and Gabari as well as Zangon Barebari communities in Kano municipal. read more stories on The Street Journal |
Several key Boko Haram Terrorists/ISWAP leaders have been killed in multiple air strikes conducted by the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole at Durbada in Borno, the Defence Headquarters has said. The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, in a statement on Monday in Abuja, added that structures belonging to the terrorists were also destroyed. Enenche disclosed that the operation, which was executed on April 17, came on the heels of credible human intelligence reports. He said that the intelligence was confirmed by series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions and indicated that the settlement was one of the locations where some of the terrorists’ hierarchy often hibernate. According to him, the fighter jets dispatched by the Air Task Force took turns in attacking the location scoring accurate hits within the target area which resulted in the death of some of the terrorists. “Others, who were seen attempting to flee the area were taken out in follow-on attacks. “The Armed Forces of Nigeria, in furtherance of the objective of restoring peace and security in the North East, will sustain the offensive against the enemies of our nation,” he said. A gunman disguised as a police officer shot dead 16 people in Canada Sunday after going on a 12 hour rampage, shooting his victims in their homes and setting fires. It was the deadliest such attack in the country’s history. Officials said the suspected shooter, Gabriel Wortman, 51, is also dead. Read also Gunmen Kidnap Edo State Commissioner, Kill Orderly on the Spot COVID-19 : Suspend Hajj Umrah, Jerusalem Pilgrims to Boost Economy – Arisekola Buhari Breaks Silence Over Abba Kyari’s Death Journey of a Martyr (Mallam Abba Kyari) Sources said that the gunman was killed by police. Several bodies were found inside and outside one home in the small, rural town of Portapique, about 60 miles north of Halifax — what police called the first scene. A police officer was among those killed. Bodies were also found at other locations. Authorities believe the shooter may have targeted his first victims but then began attacking randomly. Among the dead is Royal Canadian Mounted Police member Const. Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year member of the force and a mother-of-two. Two to three others were injured and are being treated at a local hospital, including another Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. Wortman’s deadly rampage lasted 12 hours as he went around Nova Scotia in a police uniform killing people, with his victims appearing to be random, police said. They also confirmed at one point he was driving what appeared to be a police vehicle. The tragedy ended shortly before noon local time, when police said Wortman was located at a gas station around 60 miles south of where the shootings occurred. Police did not clarify the nature of Wortman’s death, but photos showed several armed officers surrounding a car at a gas station and a body was later taken from the scene. So far, police have not released a motive or explained how Wortman was able to obtain the police uniform or car that resembled a police vehicle. A Gabriel Wortman is listed as a denturist in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, a person who makes dentures, according to the Denturist Society of Nova Scotia website. A suspect photo issued by the RCMP matches video footage of a man being interviewed about dentures by CTV Atlantic in 2014. At the press conference on Sunday, Assistant Commissioner Lee Bergerman confirmed the deaths of the civilians and officer Stevenson, saying: ‘Heidi answered the call of duty and lost her life while protecting those she served. Earlier this afternoon I met with Heidi’s family and there are no words to describe their pain. ‘Two children have lost their mother. And a husband has lost his wife. Parents have lost their daughter and countless others lost an incredible friend and colleague.’ Although no official details about the civilian victims have been released at this time, at least one victim has been identified. Family members paid tribute to Corrie Ellison on Sunday afternoon, with his cousin Juliene Henderson writing: ‘Tragic and surreal..RIP to my cousin Corrie and to the several others killed. Just texted him this AM to see if his Dad was ok (his Dad lived in portique) ..not knowing he was out there and already killed. ‘ Local resident Dave Brown was seen putting up a memorial for the community after the shootings, nearby the road where the shootings occurred. To clarify the controversy surrounding the release of the body of the late Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, for burial, the Lagos State government says there is no policy prohibiting the release of dead coronavirus (COVID-19) patients to their families. Professor Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health in the state, stated this during a briefing on Sunday. “There is no policy against the release of the diseased with COVID-19 in terms of release for burial. If you demise from any condition, there is a protocol to manage any scenario,” Professor Abayomi said. He explained, “The protocol for managing death from COVID-19 is that the body is decontaminated, and now placed in a special body bag. “We put them in two body bags and then place within a coffin, then the coffin is sealed. The family is then given the opportunity to collect the body and be taken for burial.” According to the commissioner, the only restriction on burial is that those who can attend must not be more than 25 people, including the religious members of the ceremony and the grave-diggers should not exceed 25. He said the government would allow family members of dead COVID-19 patients to conduct a private burial for their loved ones after carrying out a proper protocol for decontaminating the body and ensuring that it was sealed in body bags and further sealed in a coffin. “So, there is no current policy that bars us from handing over the deceased to their family members. “It just has to be done in a way that does not expose family members or does not break the current law around the number of people to be aggregated in one place,” Professor Abayomi insisted. During the briefing, the commissioner revealed the local governments where the highest cases of COVID-19 were recorded. Although he did not state the actual figure of cases recorded, he said Lagos Mainland Local Government Area (LGA) was worst-hit, followed by Eti-Osa and Ikeja LGAs. On the other hand, Ajeromi, Epe and Ojo LGAs have yet to record any case of coronavirus as of April 18. 2020. This is a precautionary measure: I feel well, but last week, I tested positive for coronavirus, the pandemic that is sweeping the world. I have followed all the protocols government has announced to self-isolate and quarantine. I have made my own care arrangements to avoid further burdening the public health system, which faces so many pressures. Like many others that will test also positive, I have not experienced high fever or other symptoms associated with this new virus and have been working from home. I hope to be back at my desk very soon. I have a team of young, professional, knowledgeable and patriotic colleagues, whose dedication has been beyond the call of duty, who continue to work seven days... The COVID19 pandemic has dealt a severe injury to Africa’s development prospects and worsened the conditions of its poor and vulnerable. Although there are calls for voluntary international aid to support the continent during this difficult time, this is far from the best solution. The continent must be accorded damages and liability compensation from China, the rich and powerful country that failed to transparently and effectively manage this global catastrophe. Africa’s economic gains since the last global crisis have been eroded. It is time to make offending rich countries pay the poor ones a global risk burden tax for delaying their rise out of poverty. Today, Africa is home to more than 70 percent of the world’s poorest people, with more than 400 million living below the poverty line. It is no surprise that it is disproportionately vulnerable to this crisis. It should not suffer even more because yet another powerful country failed to act responsibly. China should immediately announce a complete write-off of the more than $140 billion that its... Amidst efforts by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, its allies (OPEC+) and other top oil producers, in addition to the intervention of US President, Donald Trump, the volatility of the crude oil market still continues unabated. Available reports from oilprice.com shows that crude oil prices fell by about 5% at $28 per barrel on Wednesday, April 15, 2020. This could be attributed to persistent oversupply and the consistent fall in demand due to global lockdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The Brent crude crashed by more than 5% as it sold for about $28, and the US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude slumped by 0.55% as it sold for $20 per barrel. Also, the Bonny light crude had an over 7% drop to sell at $24.46 per barrel. The International Energy Agency (IEA) on Wednesday, predicted a 29 million barrel per day oil demand slump for April. The slump is to a level that has not been witnessed for over two and a half decades, and it further said that no output cut will fully make up for the decline in prices in the oil market. Some analysts have predicted more pressure with adverse effects on the oil market as long as the demand does not improve. However, with the global lockdown and restrictions at the moment, there are no guarantees. Senator Oloriegbe is ill informed. Maternity admission or treatment is already made free in all PHCs all over the country, anti-natal is free also, hence lack of health insurance couldn't have been the cause of high natality. General insurance is for those who have a positive balance sheet and not those who live from hand to mouth as the most Nigerian do. This can only work IF health insurance is ridiculously cheap naturally, not on the basis of being subsidized by government, that will be another way to make the government poor the more. Other way is to make sure available medicine and medical facilities are in good shape. Combat importation and sales of fake drugs as well |
