Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), yesterday, bagged Air Peace airline’s sponsorship deal worth over N500 million for national teams’ travels.

The four-year deal, which earns Air Peace the official airline of the Super Eagles and others, covers both flight services and financial support.

The deed of agreement was signed in Lagos yesterday, in the presence of NFF and Air Peace officials, two factions of the supporters club, and Super Eagles players like Alex Iwobi, Joe Aribo, Oghenekaro Etebo, and Tyronne Ebuehi.

NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, said the deal was a milestone in the bid to make the Federation financially autonomous.

Pinnick said the Air Peace deal has pushed the quest to 75 per cent, with N300 million start-off fund already sealed – both in N200 million cash and the rest as value-In-kind (VIK).

He said another partnership deal was due to be signed today to push NFF’s self-reliance to 90 per cent, ahead of two other deals in the next four weeks.

“The Air Peace deal is not just to fly us; it has funding. And the fund will be plowed back to the players. This is a partnership we have longed for. We got offers from foreign airlines but we insisted on going with our own super brand airline.
Super Eagles will be flying to play Cape Verde is one of Air Peace’s brand new aircraft. We are grateful for the huge opportunity. We will forever treasure the agreement,” Pinnick said.

Air Peace Chairman, Allen Onyema, said the partnership is a four-year deal, subject to yearly renewal.

Onyema said despite austerity in global aviation, the airline decided on the sponsorship to “use Air Peace platform to give hope to Nigerians and promote the symbol of unity.

“I think we all need to support what gives us hope as a people. Super Eagles are one of them. They represent our oneness, unity, and hope. When it is time to play, nobody cares about ethnicity and other things that divide us. That is what I represent as a nationalist and proud to promote.

“We have the capacity to fly our national teams everywhere for matches. It is all in the national interest and we will support them to qualify for Qatar world cup in 2022,” Onyema said.

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu has signed the Anti-Open Grazing Bill into law, in line with decisions of the Southern Governors Forum during its last meeting in Lagos state.

The move by governor Akeredolu on Tuesday comes weeks after the bill was passed by the Ondo State House of Assembly.

The state becomes one of the states in Southern Nigeria that has passed and signed the bill into law, meeting the deadline of the Southern Governors’ Forum.

“The move ( signing the bill) is in line with the resolution of the Southern Governors’ Forum at its last meeting in Lagos where September 1st was set as the deadline for governors in southern Nigeria to sign the Anti-Open Grazing Bill into law,” Ondo state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo said in a statement.

“This is worthwhile and a very laudable development aimed at stemming needless instances of skirmishes, conflicts as well as infractions on the enviably peaceful disposition of the good people of Ondo State.

“It is very pertinent to aver and indeed, reiterate that the law shall rather, engender a more cordial, mutually benefiting relationship amongst residents of the state irrespective of ethnicity, religion or creed. For emphasis, no particular group of persons is the target.

“While it is the hope of government that all residents would take ample advantage of this Law to enhance our socio-economic well being in Ondo State, compliance of same shall be given the utmost attention. Government shall pursue with vigour, through lawful means, to ensure strict compliance.

“In this regard, details of the new law shall be made available to the public for proper information, more depth of understanding on contents as well as other relevant areas,” Ojogo said.

Nigerians have heavily criticised the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare following an embarrassing outing regarding the sportswear of Nigerian athletes at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.

Initially, there was the shameful disapproval of 10 of the nation’s athletes from competing at the Tokyo Olympics by the Athletics Integrity Unit.

Then, the day the first batch of Team Nigeria arrived Tokyo, the team was dressed in different colours and the appearance of the team made a lot of negative impressions and an obvious signal that something was wrong in the West African country.

Before Team Nigeria’s departure, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had unveiled Afa Sports as the official kits supplier for Team Nigeria.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that Nigeria had a subsisting contract with German sportswear giant, Puma.

Sunday Adeleye, a former Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) said he had never seen such a thing before since he became an adult and followed Nigeria’s participation at the Olympics.

"An athlete going to the Olympics should be well-motivated, and kits are part of it; not when people appear in bathroom slippers and apparel in different colours,” he said.

The embarrassing drama has also resulted in the termination by Puma of $2.76 million contract it had with the AFN.

As a direct consequence of the recent developments, particularly at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 and pursuant to clauses 9.2 and 7.3 of the Agreement, we hereby terminate the Agreement with immediate effect.

“PUMA especially declares to be discharged from any or all obligations towards all stakeholders involved and reserves all rights against these entities and individuals,” PUMA stated this in a statement signed by its Director, Manuel Edlheimb.

Nigerians took to social media and vented their anger on the sports minister, Dare for allowing Nigeria's infamous corrupt system to disgrace its sports representatives on the global stage.

A trending video showing Nigeria’s shot put medal hopeful, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, washing his jersey ahead of his final game at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics also riled many Nigerians online.

The TikTok video was initially uploaded by the athlete on his Instagram page, @thechuksay, before he deleted it.

The caption in the video indicated that the athlete was given one jersey for the competition.

“When you made the Olympic Finals, but you only have one jersey,” he wrote.

Consequently, Dare became one of the most trending subjects on Twitter, with many users asking him to resign.

They also showered praises on the athletes for their pains in Japan, based on some reactions SaharaReporters extracted from Facebook.

Trisha Everest Rock-Strong said, “Sad, they should have a New Jersey each time they go for competition. Nigeria is such a sad country compare to the western world. These Nigerian Olympic (athletes) should be in a five-star hotel, with everything on the tip of their hands.”

Sema Inam said, “Yet they expect results from where they didn't sow. When it's time enough, God will reward all of them. Please let them be kind enough to assist you guys back to wherever they invited you from, to endure the embarrassments. Welcome home compatriots.”

In her comment, Chidimma Peace Godswill said, “See other countries, down to their kits and face masks! Well packaged. But here, corruption! All the money that would have been used to cater for and support our athletes was shared on a round table meeting.”

“It is all about corruption. I can bet my last dime everything was provided for but the chronic corruption endemic in all facets of our engagements ruin all plans,” Clement Ubaru. “The people entrusted with taking care of things would rather take care of their pockets. Yes, the buck stops at the minister’s table. He should have done better by demanding and getting regular feedbacks both from the athletes and the officials. That is how sane arrangements work.”

“This is so embarrassing…I'm just glad that the guy understands how things run in his country. I'm also happy that he has let everyone know the situation,” Caleb-Omini Eteng said.

Kelechi Okere said, “The only solution to all these problems is recognition of the sovereign state of Biafra and all these shows of shame will stop. But as long as you continue to hold down Biafra, you will continue to have all these types of embarrassing situations.”

“What is really wrong with our sports ministers, present and past. It's crazy, God bless our athletes in spite of all this drama they've shown dexterity,” David Danladi.

In her elaborate comment, Etz Queen Harnuh said, “My best advice to Nigeria athletes is, they should create a group and name it NOC, Naija or Nigeria Olympics committee, where there can represent the country but not governed by the country, even if the country is banned from participating, they can still be involved, that is what Russia athletes did, theirs is ROC. Everyone can go and read on it. To stop our athletes from being embarrassed. Do you know when Nigeria sports page was refreshed last, 2016? The minister of sport doesn't have any plans for our athletes, that's why a lot of them were disqualified. That's why we are not going with a lot of medals cause no form of support is shown. NOC IS THE WAY FOR NIGERIA ATHLETES,

The interesting and unique people of the Himba tribe inspired the character 'Binti' in Nnedi Okorafor's novella trilogy 'Binti'.

Down in the Kunene and Omusati regions of Northern Namibia, are the semi-nomadic people of Ovahimba and Ovazimba tribes.
It is customary, for them, for the the women to engage in daily activities of milking cows, taking care of the children while the men go hunting, sometimes leaving for long periods of time.

With a population of over 50,000, the Himba are a polygamous people where Himba girls are married off to male partners selected by their fathers once they attain puberty.
Most of their cultures have been upheld despite western influence and agitation.
Among these is the "Man comes first" tradition. The woman has little or no opinion in the decision making. Submission to her husband’s demands come first.

According to the Guardian, "When a visitor comes knocking, a man shows his approval and pleasure of seeing his guest by giving him the Okujepisa Omukazendu treatment — the wife is given to his guest to spend the night while the husband sleeps in another room. In a case where there is no available room, her husband will sleep outside."

This, apparently, reduces jealousy and fosters relationships.

Another tradition that has stood the test of time is the "bathing is forbidden" rule. Rather than take their baths, the women take a smoke bath and apply aromatic resins on their skin. They are also guided by the belief that the colour red signifies “Earth and blood”. Their red skin is one of the things that make them extremely unique. The red colour is from the otjize paste (a combination of butterfat, omuzumba scrub and ochre) and its function is to protect their skin from the harsh desert sun and insect bites.

The Himba people haven't been represented a lot in Literature. However, in Nnedi Okorafor Binti, the lead character 'Binti' is of the Himba poeple. Okorafor describes the tribe as a "tribe in Namibia who use ‘sweet smelling otjize’, a mixture of ochre and butterfat over their skin, rolling it into their hair as protection against the desert sun". In the novella, the Himba don't travel, which directly contrasts the real Himba people who are nomads.

As the nation’s security forces battle insurgents and bandits across the country, the federal government has procured a total of 32 different types of fighter planes, combat helicopters, and associated platforms since 2015, a period of six years, according to statistics obtained by THISDAY.

The war against insurgency has dragged on for 11 years with thousands of people killed and an estimated three million people displaced.

In addition to the insurgency war, the federal government has also waged war against bandits, who focus on kidnapping for ransom.

The recent delivery of the A-29 fighter planes equipped with integrated weapons and laser-firing technology is one of the latest efforts to turn the tide of the war against insurgency and banditry.

THISDAY gathered that with the arrival of the first batch of six A-29 SuperTucano attack aircraft last Thursday, the federal government has received a total of 32 brand-new aircraft for the Nigerian Air Force since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power.

The platforms include 10 Super Mushshak aircraft, five Mi-35M helicopter gunships, two Bell 412 helicopters, four Agusta 109 Power attack helicopters, two Mi-171E helicopters, three JF-17 Thunder fighter aircraft, which were delivered and inducted in May 2021.

The arsenal of the air force was also beefed up with three special missions aircraft from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), part of the maritime security arrangement, deep blue project.

Though they belong to NIMASA, they are operated by the Nigerian Air Force.

The federal government had also procured eight Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAV), also known as drones.

The drones from China were delivered last year. They include Wingloong II, CH-3 and CH-4.

The air force had last year taken delivery of eight UCAVs and three fighter jets from China.

It said the drones would be deployed in Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Kaduna states as part of its containment strategy against insurgency and armed banditry.

It had also constructed a runway and ancillary facilities for the UCAVs in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.

While highlighting the capabilities of the UCAVs, NAF said the unmanned aircraft could remain airborne for up to 26 hours providing persistent presence over areas of interest.

“The eight drones recently acquired by the government were designed to enhance the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as airstrike capabilities of the NAF not only in the fight against armed banditry in the North-west and North-central but also in counter-insurgency operations in the North-east.

“The first two UCAVs were deployed in the newly established 203 Combat Reconnaissance Group in Gombe and the two others at the Air Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai Headquarters in Maiduguri,” it said at the time of purchase.

Meanwhile, the second batch of the A-29 Super Tucano attack aircraft are expected in Nigeria by December 2021.

The A-29 fighter jet equipped is one of the latest upgrades expected to turn the tide of the war against insurgency and armed banditry.

A statement issued by the office of the Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (rtd) said the aircraft was designed and built by US aircraft manufacturer, Embraer, as a development of the Embraer EMB 312 Tucano which, he said had in-built precision-guided ammunition capabilities.

Well said.
PoliticsThe Yoruba Have Won Their Agitation, By Fredrick Nwabufo by yashau(op): 8:30pm On Jul 22, 2021
The Yoruba are an exceptional people; precocious, tactful, urbane and temperate. They are about the most sophisticated of the ethnic groups in Nigeria. They know when to pounce, when to retreat, and when to negotiate. For the Yoruba, it is about the collective. It is always about the whole. Group interest does not succumb to the sway of individual ambition. They live by the winsome ‘’kparapo philosophy’’, and the ‘’omoluabi element’’ is never musty.
Let me detour.
A united Nigeria remains the most operational means of preserving and protecting the variegated interests of those within the territory. While the ‘’big three’’ -- Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba – jostle for sectional dividends, they forget that there are other groups -- the presumed minority ethnic nationalities -- in the phylum. Nigeria has over 250 ethnic nationalities, but are the supposed small lot lesser citizens? Should the interest of the ‘’big three’’ be the governing aspiration and grail of other groupings in the taxonomy?

Have we asked what the Affade in Yobe state; the Afizere in Plateau state; Afo (Eloyi) in Nasarawa state; the Baushi in Niger state; the Boki in Cross River, the Annang in Akwa Ibom, and many other classes under the Nigerian family tree want? Some apostles of secessionism have even conscripted these ethnic nationalities into their abstract territories by fait -- without considering their peculiarities.

The arrogance of the Igbo, the Yoruba and the Hausa is largely responsible for the parlous state of the country. Nigeria should not rise and fall on ‘’this big three’’. Nigeria is bigger and stronger than any of this group on which the country currently pivots. A united Nigeria guarantees freedom – to exist -- for the small ethnic genus.

As I have always said, a united Nigeria remains a viable venture for all.
End of detour.

I have followed the agitations for self-determination by the peoples of southern Nigeria, and my interest is piqued by the crusading techniques of the agitators from the south-west. Even in potentially combustible situations, they have managed to arrest their emotions and keep their demons in the abyss.

Although they took their agitation to the streets a number of times, they have always been circumspect about when to retreat and not go off the deep end. Tact is a weapon the Yoruba deploy masterfully in knotty situations. Instead of going ‘’all-head-in’’, they step back and dispatch the greatest ammunition in the armoury of human civilisation. Tact does it for the Yoruba.

On Thursday, the Ilana Omo Oodua, the group crusading for an independent Yoruba nation led by Banji Akintoye, released a manual to guide its members in their cause for self-determination. They declared: ‘’NO TO VIOLENT STRUGGLE’’. This declaration comes in the heat of the arrest and detention of Sunday Igboho, the firebrand agitator, in Benin Republic.

Here is a demonstration of great percipience by the Yoruba nation agitators: “We, Yoruba, lead in the choice of the peaceful and law-abiding path to our goal of a separate country of our own. And we the servants of the Yoruba nation in this struggle faithfully operate, and will always faithfully operate, with methods of peaceful organisation, peaceful demands, peaceful propaganda, peaceful protests, peaceful legal actions, peaceful political persuasion, and peaceful negotiation. We will push for negotiating tables, and never push for street brawls or any other kind of conflicts. And if we find, among our people, any nationalist activist person or group that is inclined towards violence, we will encourage them to turn instead to peaceful and law-abiding means.

‘’After careful studies of the records of separatist movements in our world, we are persuaded that the peaceful approach is more likely to succeed. Various nationalist agitations in various countries of the world have, in the course of the past century, employed violent means at various times while striving to achieve their nationalist goals. Yoruba groups engaged in serving the Yoruba nation need to note carefully that none of these uses of violent or terroristic methods achieved their purpose of self-determination or autonomy for their nations; all they succeeded in doing was to generate confrontations and wars with the governments of their countries.’’
By denouncing violence and emphasising peaceful methods for achieving self-determination, the Yoruba nation agitators have judiciously submitted to Nigeria’s laws while not obviating their agenda. It also wins them more sympathy. This is in contrast to the approach of their sibling crusaders in the Lower Niger Area who unleashed violence on security agents and citizens, threatening critics, destroying property, and ended up turning their region into Aleppo in Syria.

Violence achieves nothing but death, broken bones and spilled blood.

Self-determination is a universal right, but taking up arms to kill citizens and security agents of government is terrorism.

Really, in all the agitations across divides, the endgame is not to secede. The 2023 presidential election is the Venus flytrap with nectar attracting all kinds of creatures. I believe by that time these agitations will taper off.

The agitations are ‘’precious material’’ for political negotiations. The Yoruba are playing their cards right.

Tact has won this ‘’agitation’’ for the Yoruba.

Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike has called on the federal government to go after the bandits and other figures causing trouble in several parts of the country like it did for Nnamdi Kanu.

Recall that leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Kanu was arrested and extradited to the country on Sunday after almost four years in self-exile.
The governor said though he rejects the methods of Kanu, the authorities must avoid punishing the IPOB leader extra-judicially because he comes from a certain part of the country.

“Let people know that you’re not prosecuting him because he comes from a particular section of the country. You must also make provision to say all these people who have been causing security crises in Nigeria are also prosecuted,” he said.

“Let’s not make a hullabaloo about the prosecution of Nnamdi Kanu. I don’t believe in his principles. I’ve come out, and I’ve said that you cannot annex my state to be part of your own. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll not allow the law to take its cause.

The same way that you have arrested Nnamdi Kanu should also be the same way that all others who you have known should be brought to book to face the wrath of the law. You cannot discriminate. You cannot say because Nnamdi Kanu is from a particular area, let us do this. The same principle must be applied to the bandits, Miyetti Allah and others.”
