Former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Obadiah Mailafia, has said bandits were brought into Nigeria in 2015 by powerful people who wanted former President Goodluck Jonathan out of power. Mailafia said the powerful individuals intended to deploy the bandits for war if Jonathan did not concede the 2015 presidential election. Obadiah Mailafia The former CBN deputy governor also said there should be no amnesty for the bandits because they are only out to destroy, according to a Punch report. “During the 2015 elections, they brought in thousands of foreigners into this country, armed them because it was a case of if Goodluck Jonathan doesn’t surrender, there will be war. They were ready for civil war; they were not ready for peace,” Mailafia said. “Of course, Jonathan handed over to them and then they turned their backs on the hoodlums and the hoodlums said ‘look, you brought us here and we are still here’. “There are certain world powers that want to destroy our country. That is what I believe. There was a container load of weapons that were brought in from Turkey. Another time some were brought in from Iran. But nobody probed further and everything was swept under the carpet and that was the end of it." Mailafia also called out those comparing Niger Delta militants to terrorists, who wield sophisticated weapons. “I do not believe that the Niger Delta militancy can be compared to the terrorists. These people (terrorists) are not even bandits. A bandit is a common thief or a brigand. The ‘agbero’ are bandits. These people carrying sophisticated weapons and rockets are not bandits. They are terrorists. “They have killed, they have maimed, they have raped and they have wreaked havoc.” Mailafia did not provide any proof and he is known for making unsubstantiated claims. In August 2020, Mailafia was invited by the Department of State Services (DSS) over his claim that a governor from the North is the leader of Boko Haram But in an interview with BBC Hausa, Mailafia later said he got the information from “some traders” in the market and did not know that his statement would go viral. He admitted that he had no evidence to back up the claim. http://saharareporters.com/2021/02/26/powerful-nigerians-brought-bandits-arms-civil-war-should-jonathan-re

The Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Tuesday, said he dethroned the former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi because he was not best man for the throne, saying he was appointed to spite former President Goodluck Jonathan. Ganduje revealed that Sanusi was appointed the Emir in 2014 to spite former President Goodluck Jonathan, who sacked him as the Central Bank Governor for alleging that $49 billion was missing from the public coffers. Ganduje disclosed this at the presentation of a book in honour of the former president titled, ‘Dear President Goodluck Jonathan (An Open Letter),” written by a former Managing Editor of the Daily Times Newspaper, Bonaventure Melah, in Abuja. The Kano state governor further said Sanusi was not the best man for the throne at the time he was appointed in June 2014, adding that he was sustained on the stool despite widespread protests because he had the backing of the Rabiu Kwankwaso administration in the state. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/12/i-sacked-sanusi-because-of-jonathan-ganduje/

A few hours after one of the prominent leaders of the All Progressives Party, APC, and a former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu awarded erstwhile President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan a gold medal for corruption and a red card for poor governance, the former president has issued a response. Tinubu made the disparaging comment when he delivered a keynote address at the presentation of the book: “Making Steady, Sustainable Progress – for Nigeria’s Peace and Prosperity’’, which took place at the Presidential Banquet hall, Abuja. Tinubu said: “So much money grew feet and ran faster than Jamaican runner, Usain Bolt, ever could. That which could have been spent on national development was squandered in ways that would cause the devil to blush. “One minister and her rogues’ gallery picked the pocket of this nation for billions of dollars. While poor at governance, these people could give a master thief lessons in the sleight of hand. In governance, they earned a red card but in the corruption, they won the gold medal. “It was not that our institutions had become infected by corruption. Corruption has become institutionalized.” President Jonathan responds in a statement through one of his spokespersons, Reno Omokri. Facts Have Deserted Bola Tinubu Faster Than Usain Bolt Again my attention has been drawn to disparaging comments made by Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu against former President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration. In the said comments, Mr. Tinubu said: “The prior government used the public treasury as a private hedge fund or a charity that limited its giving only to themselves,” he said. “So much money grew feet and ran away faster than Usain Bolt ever could. That which could have been spent on national development was squandered in ways that would cause the devil to blush.” Speaking further, the former Lagos State Governor said: “Boko Haram would have taken more territory and more lives would have been lost to insurgency if Jonathan had remained in power.” I would now address these allegations point by point using verifiable facts. First of all, the only global body for monitoring corruption is Transparency International which releases an annual Corruption Perception Index. It is a fact that Nigeria made her most improvement in Transparency International’s annual Corruption Perception Index In 2014 under President Jonathan when we moved from 144 to 136 representing an improvement of 8 points. Transparency International observed the Jonathan administration’s fight against the corruption in Nigeria’s fertilizer procurement regime, the use of technology to remove 50,000 Federal ghost workers and the speed at which the then President fired ministers accused of corruption or conflict of interests. From that time till today, Nigeria has not made any improvements and has remained at 136 where Jonathan left us because Transparency International deals with facts, not opinions or media trial. Other than media sensationalism, there have been no convictions of financial misappropriation stemming from the Jonathan era. However, we do know that it is a fact that the allegedly corrupt pension thief, Abdulrasheed Maina, was dismissed and declared wanted by the Jonathan administration. We also now know that it is a fact that the present Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, met with Maina in Dubai. We know that Maina’s family revealed in a press conference that Maina was invited back to Nigeria by the present government. It is also a fact that Maina was recalled, reinstated and given double promotion by the current administration. Moreover, we know from the Head of Service’s leaked memo that President Muhammadu Buhari was aware of this entire saga. Perhaps Asiwaju Bola Tinubu mistook the Usain Bolt speed at which Maina was smuggled back into the country and reinstated for the unproven claims of corruption under Jonathan. We also know that it is a fact that $25 billion worth of contracts were awarded at the NNPC without due process. It is also a fact that this is the highest ever such amount involved in Nigeria’s history. Again, perhaps it is this amount that Tinubu meant when he said “So much money grew feet and ran away faster than Usain Bolt ever could”. Or perhaps he was referring to Babachir Lawal. Nigerians should note that on the 7th of March 2014, then President Jonathan said “I am loyal to Nigeria’s economy. I don’t have accounts or property abroad.” Till date, nobody has been able to contradict that statement because it is true. Can Bola Tinubu or anybody in the APC leadership make a similar claim? On the issue of Boko Haram and terrorism, it is a fact that there is only one global body recognized to monitor terrorism and that is the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) which releases the annual Global Terrorism Index. It is a fact that between 2013 and 2014, Nigeria under President Jonathan was unfortunately listed as the fourth most terrorized nation in the world. However, in the latest Global Terrorism Index released yesterday (November 15, 2017) by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Nigeria has deteriorated from where Jonathan left it and is now the third most terrorized nation. In 2015, President Jonathan ensured that elections held in every local government in Borno states, but last month, the United Nations declared that they could no longer operate in certain local governments of Borno state. So who is fooling who? So if according to Transparency International, Nigeria was less corrupt under Jonathan than it is today and according to the Institute for Economics and Peace, Nigeria is more terrorised today than it was under Jonathan, it becomes clear that Bola Tinubu has no factual basis to make the claims he made. https: //www.oduavoice.com/2017/11/17/jonathan-responds-after-tinubu-awards-him-gold-medal-for-corruption/

Former Super Eagles forward Chinedu Obasi has claimed that his refusal to pay bribe was responsible for his omission to the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil. In an Instagram chat with Kelechi Benard, the 33-year-old forward who played for Bundesliga giants Schalke as at that time lamented the ordeal, saying he was sad. Although he was not part of the team that played the World Cup qualifiers as at that time, Obasi stated that he was offered a chance to be part of the party to Brazil if he paid bribe. "I was playing for Schalke, I was playing in the Champions League and I was doing well. Two days before the list came out, I was asked to pay some money if I want to be in the team," Obasi disclosed in an Intagram chat with Kelechi Bernard as quoted by Complete Sports. "I felt like I've paid my dues for the country, I shouldn't do this. If I was a young player, maybe I would have done that, but it was a bit personal for me and I felt very heartbroken. "I was supposed to move from Hoffeinheim to England and I got injured playing for Nigeria at the World Cup (2010 in South Africa). "After that competition, nobody called me to know how I am doing. I spent a lot of money to get fit. All people talked about was the injury. They don't care to know what I went through on a daily basis making sure I get my body in shape." https://www.thenetnaija.com/forum/entertainment/sports/75992-super-eagles-striker-claims-dropped-2014-world-cup-squad-refusing
