- He insisted that Saraki’s refusal to step down is a moral issue, even though the constitution does not specify that the Senate president must be from the majority party - According to Sagay, if Saraki is a man of honour and integrity, who has self-respect, he should not remain in office Senate President Bukola Saraki has been asked by Prof Itse Sagay, chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, to vacate his seat for the sake of morality. Sagay made the call during an interview with Punch on Thursday, August 9. NAIJ.com gathers that the legal luminary said it was an aberration, anywhere in the world, to have a Senate president who is a member of the minority party. He urged Saraki to vacate his seat and re-contest the position in 2019, if he wins on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He said: “Saraki’s refusal to step down is a moral issue. The constitution does not specify that the Senate president must be a member of the majority party. All it states is that the majority of those sitting at the Senate will elect a Senate president. “But by convention, there is no party that is in the majority that will allow a member of the minority party to lead. Now that he has crossed over to the PDP, he is morally bound to step aside and then re-contest as a PDP candidate. “I am advising him to step down. Morally, he has no right to be there and if he is a man of honour and integrity, who has self-respect, he should not remain in office. https://www.naija.ng/1185521-saraki-moral-senate-president-sagay.html

Politics › Buhari Will Win Over 73% Votes In The South-east” – Orji Uzor Kalu by yashau(op): 6:40am On Aug 04, 2018 |
Former governor of Abia state, Orji Kalu has said that President Muhammadu Buhari will win over 73 percent of votes in the south-eastern part of Nigeria in 2019, as a reward for the landmark projects executed in the zone. Mr Kalu said this at an expanded meeting of the executive members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the ward, local government and state levels in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of the state. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kalu said that Buhari had done for the zone what previous leaders, including former president, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, could not do, especially on roads. The former governor reportedly cited the ongoing rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, Enugu-Onitsha expressway and the construction of the second Niger bridge as some of Buhari’s major projects in the region. He, however, said that the major challenge facing the zone include the deplorable state of roads and the issue of the second Niger Bridge. Kalu recalled that as the governor then, he had to dismantle all the toll gates in the state to protest federal government’s neglect of the roads in the state, but expressed joy that Buhari had been able to address the problem. The former governor, however, decried the poor state of the Abia economy, citing the irregular payment of workers’ salaries and infrastructural deficit. He said that most of the ongoing road projects in the state were being done by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Kalu further expressed optimism that APC would record landslide victory in Abia during the 2019 general elections. “The party has the antidote against rigging and what it takes to win the polls at all levels in 2019. “We will never allow anybody to rig us out of elections in Abia again. We shall match them force by force and money for money,” he said. He urged APC leadership not to be weighed down by the gale of defections from the party, saying that “defection is a personal decision.” “It is their decision to defect to other parties, but it is also our choice to remain in APC.” Mr Kalu stressed the need for APC to nominate credible candidates that would dislodge any opponent of its governorship candidates, in State and National Assemblies. “The power to elect the party flag bearers is in your hands. “Give us good candidates and we will match the powers-that-be in the state, any how they want it. “You should not vote for aspirants on sentiments. Vote for aspirants based on their track record and proven competence.” https://www.gistreel.com/president-buhari-will-win-over-73-votes-in-the-south-east-orji-uzor-kalu-declares/amp/

Obasanjo speaks on Fayemi’s victory in Ekiti
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has written to the Ekiti State Governor-elect, Kayode Fayemi, congratulating him on his victory in Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
“Indeed, your success at the polls after a hard fought campaign is proof that the people of Ekiti State value your leadership and appreciate the efforts you have made thus far on their behalf,” Mr Obasanjo said in the letter dated July 15. “I salute you and all those who worked for your re-election.”
The former President, who said he received news of Mr. Fayemi’s election while on transit to Beijing, China, described the politician’s victory as a huge feat. He added, “You will agree with me, no doubt, that the outcome of the election broadly reflects the choice of your people, who have, by their conduct, visibly demonstrated that they cherish you and will do their utmost to make you succeed.
“I urge you, therefore, to reciprocate their trust by doing everything you can to strengthen their faith in democracy and in its ability to bring about improved material conditions and better service delivery to them. “You have fought and won the election and deserve to savour the victory. As you rejoice, however, I would urge that you should be magnanimous in victory and stretch a hand of fellowship to the other candidates who failed in their bid for elected office.
“Such a gesture is not only charitable but should also help at this time to cool passions in the wider interest of Ekiti State in particular and Nigeria at large.
“I felicitate with you, once again, on your renewed mandate and, as you prepare for another four years at the helm of affairs of Ekiti State, I extend best wishes for your good health and the continued progress of Ekiti State under your able leadership.”
Although Mr. Obasanjo is opposed to Mr. Fayemi’s party, the All Progressives Congress, (APC), he appeared to prefer the victory of the party in this particular election. The former President had in 2006 masterminded the impeachment of the state’s then and current governor, Ayo Fayose, from office. Mr. Fayose was at the time accused of monumental corruption.
Mr. Fayose surprisingly returned to office by defeating Mr. Fayemi in the 2014 election. But he has remained one of the most consistent critics of Mr. Obasanjo, abusing the former leader from time to time. It appears the former president wanted PDP defeated in Ekiti as punishment for Mr. Fayose. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/276527-obasanjo-speaks-on-fayemis-victory-in-ekiti.html?amp_markup=1

life2017: Why Buhari Government Is South West Government
by life2017: 9:06pm On Jun 06
I have always maintained this Buhari Govt is south west government. South west as a region is a major Beneficiary of this Buhari government.
In terms of Appointment, south west is well represented both in numbers and relevance. Actually south west control the economic policy of this govt with Osibanjo as the head of the economic team. Minister of finance South west. The economic engine room in terms of expenditure which is works, power and housing is under South west control through Fashola. The number one source of revenue to federal govt which is FIRS is headed by Tinubu's boy Babatunde Fowler. But many people are ignorant of this fact because all attention is on NNPC. FIRS generate more revenue than NNPC because oil companies pay their tax to FIRS and not NNPC. in 2017 while NNPC generated 2 trillion Naira, FIRS generated 4 trillion Naira.
In terms of infrastructure, south west got a huge share in the infrastructural expenditure on rail, road, airport etc. Lagos- Ibadan expressway , Lagos - ibadan rail huge capital cost comes to mind.
In terms of party politics, South west is well respected and relevant in APC. Tinubu wanted the chairman gone, and he is as good as gone. He nominated Oshiomole as a replacement and it is as good as a done deal.
In terms of federal govt specific state targeted policy/ decision, south west has benefitted through Lagos. This govt has given support to Lagos state by giving national stadium to Lagos state, by giving or allowing oshodi airport road to be managed by Lagos state. And through support for Dangote refinery and epe seaport.
Declaring June 12 democracy day is a masterstroke. And honouring Gani with the award of GCON is also a sign Buhari have high regards for south west. And also with this action, he has completely destroyed his most powerful critic in south west which is Obasanjo. He just silenced OBJ among the south westerners. This a technical knockout to OBJ. He just further destroyed OBJ among south west historians and political activists.
Even under Obasanjo, south west didn't get this level of regards and respect. Under GEJ, South west was taken for granted whether deliberately or not.
It also mean Tinubu movement from AD to AC to ACN to APC has achieved something significant.Tinubu and other ACN members have been fighting for June 12 to be named democracy day. Tinubu just achieved that. Democracy day he started in Lagos and other south west state has become National. What a great achievement!!! Tinubu will be very proud as the current face of south west politics.
And if the south east(igbo) don't play smart and matured politics, if Buhari wins 2019 which as at today is the most likely case , South west has a very high chance of taking over from him in 2023. At the end they will start shouting marginalization/betrayal all over again forgetting that politics is a game of number. You only win when u play the right game that will give u the number. Ododo Oro, Na who know know! |
