kolex, I am but a mere web developer who is still learning. I don't subscribe to "webmaster", "guru" or any of those titles ![]() What I will say though is it takes time. I have been at it for close to 10 years and I am still learning. You will always be learning. The minute you feel like you should relax, you know that is when you don't deserve to be in the trade. The way I look at it, I am getting old and the only way to remain marketable against the likes of some on this forum for example is to keep learning the latest stuff and working on more websites. Why? cos the younger ones are more likely to charge less and are exposed to what is in now. Just keep at it. Start off with html, graduate to xhtml/css, then javascript, then a backend language (php, jsp, etc). After that, get into databases. As you learn at each step, go to like geocities or some other free hosting site and put to practice what you have learned. Go to sites like www.meyerweb.com and www.alistapart.com and see what's the latest out there. Exchange ideas with your peers, pose questions, do sites for a client for free on condition that if you do a good job, he/she should market you to others and before you know it (assuming your fingers are the same length as mine, if you know what I mean), you will be on your own road to perfection. That road however, is crooked and narrow and you must be willing to persevere. Good luck to you, as you begin your journey of never-ending miles, with your very first step. One thing I intend to do in the very near future is to organize my own web dev training sessions. I have seen some of the stuff put out here and I know I can do a better job at making you a competitive web developer. I will keep you and others posted. Per my book, sure. Send me an email (found in my profile) and you will definitely get it within 24 hours of sending the request. I await. |
I will let sleeping dogs lie here and not say anything else but that there is a difference between the following, assuming the original statement: original: I will go to the market today copy 1: I'll go to the market today copy 2: I will go to the market today after which I will be going home copy 3: I Will Go To The Market Today copy 4: I want to go to the market to today so I can get some cooking materials copy 5: I will go to the market today copy 6: I will go to the market today. Are they all copies? Yep. Having said that, there is a big difference in some, very little difference in others and in one particular case, no difference at all ![]() I am all for copying. Heck, I learned that way too but downright ripping (or biting as mentioned here) is flat out wrong, is subject to plagiarism and if one were a member of a respected organization (SAN and ICANN come to mind), is subject to dismissal from such an organization. At the very least, give credit to whom credit is due. That's all I am saying. Note, the question is, "is it ethical". If it is by you (and without acknowledging the source), I guess that is what floats your boat. It doesn't and will never float mine, thatz for sure. |
For starters, you could go to the website of the Eric Meyer, regarded as the CSS god, view source and see how he lays out his site: http://www.meyerweb.com/ In general, this is how you learn and is definitely how I learned: Just check out a site you like, view source, download the css/js/html files, monkey around with a few things, see how it pans out and keep at it. After that, assign yourself some homework and/or do a site for someone for free. Before you know it, you will be like the proverbial fine wine, which gets better with time ![]() Good luck! |
1)You say u r using lightbox but I see no reference to it in your code. You might want to visit: http://www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox2/ for a tutorial 2) I don't think the way you have your images, as is the case here: http://mountzionministry.org/p2.JPG will work. I think it makes sense to separate what I see there now into 3 separate images 3) If you right click say, p2.JPG (which by the way, isn't displaying as at the time of posting this) and say "open in a new window", you get sent here: http://www.blockedcontent.com//Documents%20and%20Settings/Owner/Desktop/Page/p2.JPG Note: a) document and settings b) desktop c) the domain name That tells me that you are referencing the files on your hard drive and not with respect to your site's folder structure. Fix these 3 (especially 1 and 3) and get back to us if it still isn't working. Good luck! |
So I moved on to CMS started using Joomla 1.x(site that i designed wit Joomla www.kennybroltd.com)kolex: have you been there lately? I get, "This Account Has Been Suspended". FYI |
Yep, there is a difference b/w rank xeroxing, photocopying, dubbing, diamond copying, scanning and cyclostating. It's all in the quality of the finished product ![]() |
hmmm, I hope no one gets reported to mummy and daddy by somebody (and yes, I have said it ). I don't have the time to chase people with whips.Healthy debate is good. If anyone feels bad about it/feels it is too hot, such people should stay out of the kitchen. |
I think a synopsis of the problem/url to the page in question would help you, for starters ![]() |
hmmmm! life. And in my days, there used to be a few people who would walk around with ababio, the chemistry textbook and the gigantic biology textbook (do you guys still use those today? ). Such people would make me feel bad cos I never seemed to have the time to read all 3 at the same time yet come exam time, I would always do better than them.Lesson of the day: Nothing is what it seems ![]() |
afam, Sure, they know chances are you will never use even half of it but in that sense, it is still unlimited. In other words, I don't have to worry about exceeding anything or paying through my nose for the extra. What's more? In my own case, I am assured reliability. And yes, it may cost more than others but it was my choice to get the package ![]() Compare that to those who over say, 2GB of bandwidth. Even 2GB sounds unlimited but then again, it depends on how popular your site is and if you are like me, the 2GB does register with me mentally and I will always be afraid of exceeding it. |
quadrillo nice post. Question: How do we apply this within the Nigerian context. In particular it would be nice if you could address this as it relates to lack of basic infrastructure, lack of access to a majority and businesses that don't have websites among others. Let's step it up a notch ![]() |
I have had some more time to think about this and have come up with another explanation ![]() Age shouldn't be a factor but it is in the sense that, it depends on how you deal with the client with respect to, for instance, how you speak and how you present yourself. For instance, it is quite possible for a 20-year old to sound and look like a 30-year old and vice versa. So maybe age here shouldn't necessarily mean biological age but mental age. As they say: The way you dress it the way you are addressed |
I find this very hard to believe but if it is, hopefully you have backup. If not, ask your web host when last they performed back up and if they can give you the files they have as at their latest backup. If they don't do backups and/or don't have your files, you are SOL. By the way, don't you have your files on your laptop/PC? If not, why not? |
segsa, Do what webdezzi has said. If that doesn't work, YIM me. By the way, as a test, i would remove whatever logic is in your check_login page and replace it with "hello world". If that works, then it is your logic. To that effect, post the code in each of the 2 files you have mentioned here. If what webdezzi is saying is true, then it isn't surprising that your code is going into an infinite loop. Good luck! |
This is being reported by FireFox (Thank God for Firefox ). Hopefully, just as my reporting of same for Punch a few months ago, someone who either works for Sun News (I think Feyisara but I am not sure) or someone who knows someone there will alert them to this. This represents lost revenue and angry visitors. Details:http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?client=Firefox&hl=en-US&site=http://www.sunnewsonline.com/ What is the current listing status for sunnewsonline.com? |
hmm, maybe you should remove the "@" from before the header() as this supresses errors and instead do something like this: header() or die(); or something like that. You might have to read up on the die() function, assuming someone else doesn't post back on its proper use. Good luck! |
1) Make sure said file is in the same folder/location as where u r calling it from 2) Make sure that you are indeed pulling back a result 3) Make sure you are redirecting b4 outputting any html (as in, put it outside the first HTML tag, if not done already) Get back to us if neither of these work. Bottom line though, as you said, the person who sold you your package hoodwinked u. sorry o. |
hmm, since webguru said u shdnt refer to me as mum, you are now calling me by my first name. It's alright ![]() Anyways, glad to see that you appear to have a solution to your problem. As a personal rule, I always use one version down from the current one, just in case. As you just learned the hard way, not all hosts may use the latest. Cheers! |
my localhost doesnt support (mysql)Then this is probably the problem. I use mysql_connect() by the way. Also, do what I do in times like this: contact your host and have them upload a test file from their end that connects to your database. If it works, they will let you know and from there, you can "borrow" their code ![]() Good luck! |
nitation, u r a brave man cos I have read the above at least 3 times and stil can't grab it. Hmm, might b cos it isn't formatted (hint to poster ) |
I am actually surprised by the "flash required" comment. Reason - Last I read, 96% of browsers come with flash installed. This 96% by the way is more than the %age of those with javascript enabled. I am curious to know what browser this is cos I haven't heard this in a long time. Neptune, don't be so harsh now ![]() Just update your site to include a flash sniffer, in javascript that will: 1) Write to the page that they need flash to continue AND 2) provide a link to where they can get it. Shouldn't be that bad ![]() |
mav, I could be wrong but I think that submitting your site to too many search engines could work against your site. Again, I stand corrected. |
afam, Mine does, unlimited storage too ![]() |
segsa, I think what I meant to say is that Flash, when done badly, is bad and not that flash as a whole is bad ![]() If I said it the way you understand, I apologize. |
yeah it makes total sense neptune. tis a pity that cos of our poor infrastructure, many web users are denied a superior user experience. Hopefully, it will improve one day, we can only hope and that most importantly, it doesn't happen just when we are about to retire, make we follow chop small ![]() |
no problem neptune. It's your site ![]() Question though from a flash dunce :If you reload a different page each time, does that mean you get to include a different flash movie per page? If so, is it more efficient to do that as opposed to building everything into one movie, your considerations above aside (which you could avoid maybe a lil by shaving off a few framesets. Mind u again, I am not into flash)? |
What I think? Considering I am used to flash sites where I click a link (in ur case, in the nav section) and I get another page, without the page being refreshed, I think you are going against the norm. Then again, I don't do flash so maybe I have a whole lot more to learn ![]() |
Could it be in the page title (probably changed either in the frontpage component, section, or article)? If those don't work, then I guess I have a lot much more to learn ![]() Good luck! |
There is a guy here named pie1ct who seems to be pretty knowledgeable in joomla. Contact him via his details here or via his website: http://www.webpromag.com/ Good luck! |
It shdnt be a factor but in Nigeria, I guess it is. I would say in that regard that you tell them that just like age isn't a factor in a relationship, it shdnt be a factor in what you know. Besides, by hiring you, they aren't hiring your age but your skill set. Hopefully that works for you. Good luck! |
http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/articles/gbs/ Yahoo conducted research and found out that 96% of their users use the browsers defined in the list on that page. Does it mean their pages won't display on other browsers? No. What it means though is that users browsing with non-graded browsers will have a pared-down experience. Why do I share this with you all? Cos this should help you in those cases where you are deciding on whether or not to use say, some CSS feature. It also comes in handy when a client insists that for example, you must ensure that their site works 100% in IE on a mac. By showing them this data, you have factual (as opposed to emotional) proof why it doesn't make sense to spend unnecessary amounts of time trying to make something work in a browser than a small minority of ppl use. Having said the above, we are not to forget about progressive enhancement and graceful degradation ![]() Good luck and happy coding! |
