danteweb,

Thanks for the ad hominem attack on my attempt at being sarcastic and most importantly, thanks for refocusing us on the actual purpose of the thread

Your point is the impression looks to good to be fake!!!
No ad hominem attack intended but I think you need to look at the grammatical issues with your statement above. Perhaps you meant too good to be true? To answer your question, no, I don't doubt our ability to do good things but yes, I doubt it will look exactly like that. Taking it a step closer, I doubt the thing will even get off the ground. Can anyone say Tinapa?

What on earth is it with us and Americans? Can we not think straight without having some stereotypical ideas about how things work abroad. That is not to say that the Americans don't do what they do extremely well.
At least u know.

By the way anyone who is keen on seeing a comparison between 3d comps and real imagery can visit http://www.thehavenhomes.com and http://www.thehavenhomes.com/windsor.htm - a residential development in magodo area of Lagos.
the home page has got the real imagery and the windsor page has got the 3d visualizations.
In this site's case, the difference was clear. Not the same with the lagos site. Also when I said I showed americans, I guess I should have been clear. I meant I showed it to my peers at work who happen to be american. In other words, I also work with Indians and if I happened to meet any of them at the time, I would have asked them.

hanen, i'm with you 100%. I mean anyone who can't see that the image used is a 3d comp should be taken back to the 20th century.
I would still respectfully disagree. Call me slow (and I am grin) but that photo implies to me that the structure already exists. If this is still in the development phase, I think it's best to show some sort of rendition as what it will look like (artist's impression or whatever). How much do you want to bet that the completed structure won't look anything like that? If in the end it isn't and honestly don't think it will be, then it's a fraud.

hmmm, I can't really say but given that you are using tables, y not just create a faux spacer cell (<td width="10">&nbsp;</td>wink? Just wondering. I mean you are already using tables so you might as well.

In other news:
If only you would use DIVs, I might have been able to help you better grin

WebmastersHow Is My **Free** Css Ebook? by yawatide(op): 3:38pm On Nov 19, 2008
Hello guys and gals,

Many have emailed me for my free CSS Ebook.  Yet no one has sent in any responses so I decided to make it a public affair.

If you have emailed me for the ebook, let us all know what you thought about it.  Do you see it as a book that will help you code better sites?  Have you used any of the code in the book yet? If yes, any sites you would like to share with us all?  Any comments as to how to make future editions of the book better?  Would the contents of this book make you want to come for a seminar I am thinking of putting together in 2009?  Questions, questions, answers, answers  cool

If you haven't received the book yet but would love to, please send me an email to the address in my profile and I will surely send it to you.

NOTE: Send me an email.  Don't post it here.  Thanks,

WebmastersRe: WYSIWYG Editors Versus Text Editors by yawatide(f): 12:45pm On Nov 19, 2008
I think the air needs to be cleared a bit on this topic:

A WYSIWYG editor is a text editor in disguise but a text editor isn't necessarily a WYSIWYG editor. Let's understand this first before commenting/posting.

Take DW. You can code in it in both design and code view. The latter is a text editor.

Yes at the end of the day, a client doesn't care what you use, as long as you get it done but for what we do, I am still of the opinion that one must know how things are done before advancing to using what they don't understand. I mean, look at half the sites posted here for review then view their source. It wreaks of lack of understanding of efficient use of a WYSIWYG software program.

@olushola
As Nelly sang, it is getting hot in here, but guess what? I won't take off my clothes tongue

@hanen
People perceive things differently. Everyone can't see things the way you do. I showed the site to others, including Americans, and they most saw what I saw - what seemed to be what is actually on ground

@all
Probably didn't refer to me but just to set the record straight, I last visited home a year ago next friday and look forward to my next visit next year. So between my visits, youtube, friends/family visiting home, flashes, phone calls and emails, I am very aware of what is on ground. Thank you very much cool
ComputersMicrosoft Seeks Invalidation Of Web Patents by yawatide(op): 11:57am On Nov 19, 2008
http://www.thenationonlineng.com/dynamicpage.asp?id=70223

Microsoft Corp. sued a company that’s demanding royalties from its clients over software to perform Internet-based transactions.

Closely held WebXchange Inc. sued insurer Allstate Corp., shipper FedEx Corp. and computer-maker Dell Inc. in March, accusing them of infringing three patents awarded since 1998 for computer-network switching and routing. Microsoft’s complaint, filed Nov. 12 in a federal court in San Jose, California, seeks to challenge those patents, saying they are invalid and unenforceable.

The dispute is over Microsoft’s Visual Studio software, which allows companies to use a technology called Simple Object Access Protocol, or SOAP, for exchanging information over the Web. WebXchange claims that its patents cover "any real-time transaction on the Internet," Microsoft said.

"WebXchange has placed a cloud over Visual Studio software, Web services, and the SOAP protocol by asserting patents against Microsoft customers," Microsoft said in the complaint.

Dell, FedEx and Allstate have demanded that Microsoft cover any legal costs from the suits pending in Wilmington, Delaware, and the company is facing potential demands from other customers, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said.

"WebXchange’s strategy of accusing Microsoft’s customers one at a time, and refusing to deal with Microsoft, will force Microsoft to expend a disproportionate amount of resources responding to individual customer indemnification demands," Microsoft said in the complaint.

"WebXchange’s strategy, if allowed to continue, will also burden the courts with a large number of suits when the issues could be resolved in this single suit."

Lawyers for WebXchange didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment.

The case is Microsoft Corp. v. WebXchange Inc., 08cv5149, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California (San Jose). The earlier cases are WebXchange Inc. v. The Allstate Corp., 08cv131; WebXchange Inc. v. FedEx Corp. 08cv133; and WebXchange v. Dell Inc., 08cv132, all U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware (Wilmington).
WebmastersRe: Abeg Make Una Help Me Check Am. by yawatide(f): 12:51am On Nov 19, 2008
1) get rid of the intro page - IT'S CRAP!

2) Your left nav items aren't consistent with respect to font size

3) Font sizes aren't consistent across the site

4) <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="udm-style.php" media="screen, projection" />
Why use projection?

5) Contact form, if not filled right, redirects to emailmeform. Assuming that is where u want it to go, the look and feel of the redirected page isn't consistent with the rest of the site.

6) Dates under upcoming events - are those dynamic or manual? Why did you go with whichever it is? I personally think that if they don't hv that many events, it shd be manual and vice versa.

7) So you have members access button, then you have members directory. I thought the whole point of members only is to hide such info as members directory from non-members. You could display a directory of officers but not members. that info shd b confidential.

8 ) Left nav buttons aren't the same number on each page.

9) Buttons clickable on one page aren't clickable on others. Something tells me you didnt use server side includes - BAD!

10) It would be nice to have the pix of the president next to his speech. Makes the site more personal and inviting to ppl considering placing membershiip.

WebmastersRe: WYSIWYG Editors Versus Text Editors by yawatide(f): 1:10pm On Nov 18, 2008
WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get and this refers to tools that enable you to "draw" for instance a table as opposed to hand-coding via say, notepad. So the "What YOu See" part refers to how what you see (what you have drawn) is what you will get code-wise when you view what you have "drawn" in code view. So if you draw a 10 column by 2 row table, that is what you will see when you pull up the site/look at the underlying code. Kind of like "Garbage In Garbage OUt" with respect to programming.

WebmastersRe: WYSIWYG Editors Versus Text Editors by yawatide(f): 10:36am On Nov 18, 2008
omni,

look at it this way - no one is saying you should push your car to work. That would be insane but if your car breaks down on you and there is no one nearby to help, you should know enough to at least try to push your car to the side of the road by yourself and if possible, do some spot checks (battery terminals, etc) before screaming bloody mary mother of God tongue
WebmastersRe: WYSIWYG Editors Versus Text Editors by yawatide(f): 9:31am On Nov 18, 2008
Dual,

Same argument could be made with respect to how kids learn alphabets. We could immediately put them on a computer cos we are in the computer age but we don't. We teach them the same song we had been brought up on and probably the same song our parents were brought up on.

I guess my point is, and I say this based on many YIM chats with many on this forum, ppl learn diferently and may not even have access to certain resources and so it often helps to learn and appreciate the basics.

You can still do agile development with notepad you know, not that I am advocating that you do wink

Mustay,

and wat does this hv to do with the post at hand? If you know who did that site, tell them I am suffering from content shock - there is so much text on that page and I find it hard to figure out where to start and what information is more relevant than the other.
WebmastersRe: Help Me Review And Test Web Application by yawatide(f): 6:58am On Nov 18, 2008
1) Get rid of the horizontal scroll (FF)

2) When I clicked on the links to the right, I was taken to another page. Fair enough but it looked as though I was another site as the header image switched out and me and it kind of spooked me out

3) Calendar: I think you should do something about validation - I chose the period b/w nov 5 and nov 3. You see anything wrong with that scenario? Don't let the backend handle everything
WebmastersRe: Ecommerce On Nigerian Websites by yawatide(op): 6:53am On Nov 18, 2008
Yeah, having read a lot on the 2CO site and chatted live with at least 3 different representatives on the site, I am leaning towards 2CO. Having said that, it would be nice if others could chime in just in case there are other options out there.

Once again thanks and please keep the suggestions coming.
WebmastersRe: WYSIWYG Editors Versus Text Editors by yawatide(f): 8:36pm On Nov 17, 2008
t-web allow me, if i may, to punch a whole in your premise:

A WYSIWYG doesn't necessarily mean FP or DW. It means anything other than Notepad (or its "siblings"wink as in any tool that offers more than notepad would with respect to making your coding life "easier (I put this in quotes because it doesn't necesarily do so)" as they provide a "design mode" of some sorts that enables you to see what you get, based on you either using your mouse to drag things here and there or based on the code you typed.

If you still insist on your question though, I am afraid I go with the "notepad suite". Why? cos it gives me more control over my code.
WebmastersRe: Ecommerce On Nigerian Websites by yawatide(op): 7:23pm On Nov 17, 2008
For the record, the client intends to sell the electronic version of his books not only within Nigeria but to anyone, anywhere in the world.  That immediately cancels out paypal or any merchant that doesn't have Nigeria on its blacklist.

so far, I am liking your answers.  Please keep them coming.  Thanks.
WebmastersRe: Charges For Banner Adverts On Sites by yawatide(f): 3:42pm On Nov 17, 2008
You could charge as low as I have, where I charge, for a 160x600/728x90 ad at the rate of $100 per year (the sites in question don't get that much traffic) or you could charge as high as this online paper does:

It's really your call. Good luck!
WebmastersRe: How Would You Better Your Country's Official Website? by yawatide(op): 3:36pm On Nov 17, 2008
Well,

It is at least 3 days past the deadline I only got 3 emails, 4 if you include the one who volunteered but didn't send me an email. I guess we are all busy. I was expecting at least 10 volunteers, excluding myself.

As a result of the above, I am afraid, at least for now, that the volunteer project is called off. I guess we are all busy.

Thanks,
WebmastersRe: WYSIWYG Editors Versus Text Editors by yawatide(f): 3:35pm On Nov 17, 2008
1) WYSIWYG, but only after you have learned how to code without one, ala notepad
2) Homesite
3) As close to notepad as you can get, doesn't bloat your pages with unnecessary code.
WebmastersEcommerce On Nigerian Websites by yawatide(op): 12:41pm On Nov 17, 2008
Sorry if this issue has been hashed out before - I just haven't found any posts on this, hence my post.

I have a client who wants, among others, to sell his books online. If you have done something similar in the past, please share with us whose services you employed for the payment gateway. If there are many options, which would, based on experience, you say is better? I have always used paypal, hooking the person's account with that of a friend in the US, who then repatriates the money to his friend in Nigeria but I am thinking I should go for something different. The client has a domiciliary account, by the way.

Sorry to sound crass but please, no "I have done this before, please send me an email or call me" type posts. Please share with all of us here. If you provide the website/company name and contact info, I will do the rest from there.

Thanks in advance.
