WebmastersRe: Why Is My Database Result Empty. by yawatide(f): 5:45pm On Dec 04, 2008
So, I am looking at your sql code and I think (i cd b wrong though) that I found the problem:
$sql="INSERT INTO person (Lastname, Othernames, Dob, Sex, Permanentaddress, Contactaddress, Stateoforigin, LGA, Hometown, Parentsname, Addressofparents, Maritalstatus, Nationality, Modeofidentity, Number, Residentpermit, Mobilenumber, Mothermaiden, Bank, Accounttype, Accountname, Accountnumber, Day, Years, Companyname, Companyadd, Guarantorspos, Guarantorsname, Guarantorsadd);
VALUES ('$lastname','$Othernames','$Dob','$Sex','$Permanentaddress','$Contactaddress','$Permanentaddress','$Contactaddress','$Stateoforigin','$LGA','$Hometown','".$Parentsname."','$Addressofparents','".$Maritalstatus."','$Nationality','$ModeofIdentity','$Number','$Residentpermit','$Mobilenumber','$Mothermaiden','$Bank','$Accounttype','$Accountname','$Accountnumber','$Day','$Years','$Companyname','$Companyadd','$Guarantorspos','$Guarantorsname','$Guarantorsadd')";
Focus on the bolded portion.  Do you see the ";" there? It should be removed.

Try that and get back to us.  If that doesn't work, we try something else.

There are other problems with your form code (not enough to make ur sql crash but enough to add some weight to your pages) and I also think you could use an extra table but thatz a lesson for another day.
WebmastersRe: Why Is My Database Result Empty. by yawatide(f): 4:32pm On Dec 04, 2008
charliebiz, thatz the spirit! from experience, once you finally get this done, u will know it like the back of your hand (even when nepa takes light grin)

So, I assume at this point that in order to see that you got blanks that you did what I said a few posts ago - do an echo of the sql variable and then add an exit. If this is true, then I think you should look at your form code. Do the names that you have given your form fields equal the names that you are assigning to your PHP vars?

I think we should see your form as well. If it is too long, just post the first 5 or so form fields (the html code, that is).

Unfortunately, at work I am in a JSP environment so I can't help and when I get home, I am too tired to do anything. This is definitely an area where human contact would help and am surprised no one has offered (or I guess they have but want money).

Remember: Quitters never win. Winners never quit! cheesy

he he Dual,

It's the "do u know who I am?" naija syndrome. No offense to anyone but when I hear that from anybody, anywhere, my "oops, sorry but did I say that out loud?" reaction is, "who gives a s**t?" grin
WebmastersRe: Php Help by yawatide(f): 4:07pm On Dec 04, 2008
quad,

perhaps you can integrate this into your php lesson and provide a link to it from here?

might end up being good for business wink
WebmastersRe: How Can I Do It by yawatide(f): 4:05pm On Dec 04, 2008
u need a form and perhaps a database on the back end for storage purposes. Downloadable? I am assuming here you just want to provide links to files that once clicked, the user downloads to their computers? If yes, just use the anchor tags (<a href="link to file">download this file</a>wink
WebmastersRe: Php Class For Beginners. Question Will Be Treated With High Priority. by yawatide(f): 3:52pm On Dec 04, 2008
quad,

I appreciate and commend your efforts here, I really do. I however will agre with Musa (without the smart ass attitude).

If indeed you are getting all this from a book, you should at least reference it. For one, you don't get someone accusing you of plagiarism. Two, you might as well upload the book here or email it to people and then let them come back to you or this post and ask any questions they may have.

Sure, given that most books are at least 50% fluff, it is good to condense it for people in need. Having said that, I think a reference to any book(s) is in order.

Once again, kudos on your gallant efforts.
WebmastersRe: Php Help by yawatide(f): 3:46pm On Dec 04, 2008
There is the PHP part (sessions, sql queries, looping through the record sets, etc) and the Database part (creating your database, table(s), columns, primary and second keys, etc)
WebmastersRe: Webdesign : Can You Do It All? by yawatide(f): 3:44pm On Dec 04, 2008
Can you do it all? Yes
Should you do it all? In an ideal world, no.

As they say, not that you should but you could. Or as another says, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Is this answer simple enough? wink
WebmastersRe: Best Web Design by yawatide(f): 3:42pm On Dec 04, 2008
iotolorin:

You are entitled to be "the best in the world" as a marketing ploy no doubt but I must confess, after so many guffaws on your part, your credibility with him has dipped from hero to sub-zero.

You have proven beyond all reasonable doubt that you are capable of being dishonest by changing your stance on issues and your web layouts whenever the wind blows (which is pretty often).
WebmastersRe: Web Designer/ Graphics Designer by yawatide(f): 3:37pm On Dec 04, 2008
hanen, come on. u r pretty smart, and you know what I am driving at. I was responding to your (off topic, I should add) quotation from the wiki. If you didn't intend to go off course, you shouldn't have opened that window.

The graphics and text aren't part of the code. They're PART OF THE DESIGN. The design of a WEB PAGE. The person that designs a WEB page is a WEB DESIGNER.
My point exactly. You can design a web page in photoshop and upload it to the server as a jpg or gif or whatever file (I still see some people doing this unfortunately) as opposed to "slicing and dicing" the said graphics file, which is where "development" comes in.

@smart
I will join you in saying, "coooooouuuurt". LOL, pretty funny.
WebmastersRe: Web Designer/ Graphics Designer by yawatide(f): 2:29pm On Dec 04, 2008
hanen, I believe the "graphics and text" part of your bolded statement has NOTHING to do with the actual XHTML code for instance, unless of course you want to call that text too. I see nothing there that refers to the actual code (XHTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, etc) wink

Template?
When you build your first page, typically the home page, and use that as the basis for other pages of your site, I believe that first page is a template for other pages.  So what is the problem with using a template.  Or do you mean boiler plate template?  I have covered this ad nauseum (sic):

WebmastersRe: Let's Do It Together by yawatide(f): 2:23pm On Dec 04, 2008
I have just be given the contract to REdesign a site, I''ll love it if we on Nairaland Build it together the reasons are:
quad, I hereby call on you to modify your post above, based on the quote I have just given.  It smells of "let's do it all together, from photoshop to mysql. Better yet as Dual has said, delete it altogether as it is useless without a url.

Personally, beginning 2009, I will no longer respond to site reviews - they are not appreciated and 90% of the time, what I see isn't put into practice anyways. I will only focus on posts that spark debate where we can actually learn something.
WebmastersRe: Why Is My Database Result Empty. by yawatide(f): 1:00pm On Dec 04, 2008
xanadu,

It is nice of you to do what you did. Kudos. I avoided this because the minute I saw the code, it wreaked of copy-and-paste from some website without full understanding of what the code does.

Having said that, I would like to add that it isn't good coding practice to write the code the way he has. It is best (from a debugging, maintenance and readability standpoint) to assign those "POSTs" to a variable and call the variables instead.
WebmastersRe: Let's Do It Together by yawatide(f): 12:58pm On Dec 04, 2008
1) What's the timeline?

2) You said you got a contract which implies you are getting paid. If 100 sign up, how do you intend to "spread the wealth"?

3) Scratch htm off the list

4) I think you need to give out the URL or at least a screenshot with name blocked out (if you are afraid someone will put water in your garri) so we have an idea (features, pages, etc).

If you provide answers to these and more, I just might sign up as the web architect wink
WebmastersRe: Web Designer/ Graphics Designer by yawatide(f): 12:54pm On Dec 04, 2008
Why are most web designers not good at graphics?
Short, sharp and simple "let's end this post here" answer:
Because they aren't designers but developers, programmers, coders or whatever you want to call it.  Check it up in a dictionary, on the wiki or wherever.

I have said it for as long as I have been on this forum and will continue to do so. WEB DEVELOPMENT IS NOT WEB DESIGN.
WebmastersRe: The Future Of Programming by yawatide(f): 12:52pm On Dec 04, 2008
That only the strong will survive shouldn't be anything new. You are to constantly keep yourself marketable by learning the latest. If not, you get left behind and watch your jobs go to India/China.

WebmastersRe: Why Is My Database Result Empty. by yawatide(f): 9:18pm On Dec 03, 2008
I cd b wrong but it looks like u rnt capturing ur form fields (hence the commmas) and perhaps the table in question is set u such that it only accepts "not null" values.

Again, I cd b wrong.

And moreover, www.oasisrecord.org, still remain unbeaten in the whole nigeria,
The arrogance! At first it was "best site/company in nigeria" then it was "best site/company in the UK for nigerians" and now it is "unbeaten in the whole nigeria". Why stop there? Why not say in the whole world? huh huh tongue tongue huh huh angry
WebmastersRe: Best Videos Website In My Country by yawatide(f): 6:36pm On Dec 03, 2008
I am new in this forum and in my post I started by saying "i'm not very good"
You are.  Custmozing Joomla! is not a task for the faint-hearted.  A little busting of balls doesn't hurt anyone  tongue

My first post has not been changed, I thought forums usually show when a post have been edited,
Not this one, or at least, if it does, I am not aware.  Moderator?

As complaints goes, my audience is happy, and delta.com is,  ok, lets cut it there, thank you for your advices ma soeur de States
As long as you know this for a fact, it's all good.  Per advice, thanks.  But don't you mean to say "etats" and not "states"?  tongue

PS: how did u get the analysis about the speed on my website, i'd like to check it too
Sure: http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ - just enter your url and let the site do the rest.

a bientot!
WebmastersRe: Why Is My Database Result Empty. by yawatide(f): 6:22pm On Dec 03, 2008
What error are you getting?  Also, what I like to do when doing DB stuff is to echo my sql query string.  In other words, right below the $sql line, add 2 lines thus:

echo $sql;
exit;

If you see the values you entered on the form, whose values are stored in "$POST", then at least you know that the values are being passed.

Of course, I say this not knowing what your actual error is, so please post it here so that we can all be of better help.

Lesson in general:
It pays to actually understand what you are copying and pasting so that when you have issues, you don't say something to the effect that what you copied is wrong.  The owners of w3cschools are human and so are capable of making mistakes but considering many go there for code, I doubt they would make an error that someone wouldn't immediately call them on. Why? Their reputation is at stake.
WebmastersRe: How Is My **Free** Css Ebook? by yawatide(op): 5:28pm On Dec 03, 2008
Sooooo,

Out of curiousity, for those who have read the book in its entirety, have you applied any of the lessons from the book? If yes:

1) Is it possible to post what you have done so far?
2) Was it pretty easy to integrate?
3) Did you encounter any problems? Better yet, did you have to tweak the code to meet your needs?

Answers to the above and more would be appreciated.

Thanks,
WebmastersRe: Best Videos Website In My Country by yawatide(f): 5:24pm On Dec 03, 2008
I know I haven't had my cafe au lait yet but I am pretty sure your original post (that is, before u modified it grin) said something about asking if there were any Nigerian video sites that we are aware of so you could check them out.  Maybe not in those exact words but something close.  If not, why did you respond to the "so you can lift" statement below?
Is there anything wrong improving your website from the best, i call it inspiration
Again, I know I haven't had my cafe au lait yet but I am pretty sure you have modified your original post wink

Per your thumbnails comment, yes I know you have thumbnails and not actual videos on the main page.  Having said that, at some point, I will have to click either the flash movie or the thumbnails so that I can be taken to a page with the actual video right? wink

By the way, I am in the states and the site did take more than a few seconds to load (I have DSL at home and a T1 connection at work).  In fact, a website analyzer has this to say about the home page of your site:
Total HTTP Requests: 98
Total Size: 804224 bytes

-----

14.4K  642.91 seconds
28.8K 331.26 seconds
33.6K 286.73 seconds
56K 179.88 seconds
ISDN 128K 68.69 seconds
T1 1.44Mbps 23.86 seconds

Focus on the bolded portions only, assuming every one of your target audience has "super fast" connections

-----------

Largest file: http://www.congovideos.com/images/banners/pub-lafontaine600.gif

so you see mon frere de la republique, that I am being as independent minded as possible.  I hope that you at least see it that way.  I have the best of interests of both you and your site at heart, trust me  cool

By the way, when you say no one complains, what's the criteria? how many people have you heard back from? what percentage does that boil down to with respect to your customer base? Even delta.com has at least 5 complaints a week. Trust me, I know wink
WebmastersRe: Best Videos Website In My Country by yawatide(f): 3:45pm On Dec 03, 2008
Why? So you can lift stuff from there and use it to improve yours?  tongue

Anyways, you might want to try http://www.viewnaija.com/

1 thing about your site (and I say this with a very, very independent mind):

1) It runs slow.  I am afraid for those who will open it at a cybercafe with a slow connection.  Joomla! is already a slow CMS and those videos are making it even slower.  I personally think Joomla! for a site like this is overkill but I could be wrong.
ComputersInternet Body To Auction Special Domain Names by yawatide(op): 12:41pm On Dec 03, 2008
http://www.punchontheweb.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200812030541234
By Jonah Iboma
Published: Wednesday, 3 Dec 2008

The Nigeria Internet Registration Association, the body in charge of the administration of the country’s top-level domain name, .ng, is soon to auction special Internet addresses to interested corporations organisations and individuals across the country.

The move follows a decision to commence a massive promotion of migration of Internet addresses used by various organisations domiciled in Nigeria to bear the country’s Internet identity.

Currently, many organisations operating in Nigeria, including major firms and government bodies, have Internet addresses that do not reflect that they are domiciled in the country, a situation that is different from what happens in most parts of the world.

Some major government bodies that use generic names, a situation which often opens them up for attack and doubts, include the Central Bank of Nigeria which has its website as www.cenbank.org, instead of something like www.cbn.gov.ng, a name that reflects it as a Nigerian government organisation.

NiRA is to commence the auction of the names following its being granted the mandate to oversee the administration of .ng, after the resolution of the dispute pertaining to its administration.

The body is also to allow organisations that have the right to some names to claim them rather than allow them to fall into the hands of wrong persons.

At the end of the auction, those with Internet addresses ending with .ng will have to migrate to NIRA’s platform or have their websites closed.

As a first step towards the sale, NiRA will on Wednesday, (today) inaugurate an Auction Committee.

According to the President, NiRA , Mr. Ndukwe Kalu, the committee will be responsible for fashioning out auction guidelines and procedures for the .ng domain.

“This is both for special registrations on the first level like mybank.ng, and also premium domains on the second level, like doctors.com.ng, shop.com.ng, among others,” he said.

Ndukwe also revealed that the committee would be chaired by the Vice-President, NiRA and Director, Licensing at the Nigerian Communications Commission, Mrs. Mary Uduma.

He explained that premium domains were one of the highlights of the policies released by NIRA earlier in the year.

This, he said, would enabled NiRA to provide for one of the lowest charges in the world of any country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) or Generic Top Level Domain (gTLD).

Kalu further said that the concept would enable every Nigerian to have a .ng domain at a very low price, while premium domains could be used to augment the financial demands.

‘Since the release of the policy NIRA has been inundated with enquiries on the modalities for the acquisition of the premium domains and registering on the first level from all over the world. There was therefore need to ensure that we have a world class and transparent process in place,’ Kalu said.

He stressed that the establishment of this committee marked a landmark in the fulfilment of the promise of the current board to provide a platform for all Nigerians to express themselves on the web.

Giving further reasons on the importance of the committee, he noted that it had taken a long time since the release of the guidelines, because the initial focus was on putting in place a first class technical infrastructure.

‘This has been done since October 1, and fully tested and ready for service,’ he said.

As said by Kalu, NiRA has to make sure it has a product to offer first before talking of auctions.

‘The work of the committee is expected to herald a new beginning in the utilization of .ng and is expected to submit its final report in early January with the first auctions expected either late January or first week of February,’ he said.

na tori u dey yarn grin "Sorry but we don't do demos. Feel free to browse our portfolio. It speaks for itself. We have Bleep clients and none of them ever got a demo. WebmastersRe: Clients Who Cheat Web Designers After Getting A Demo by yawatide(f): 5:01pm On Dec 02, 2008
question: does it make a difference if you show me a demo or a jpg?

Look at it this way, I could call you to show me something and you come into my office and there are 2 people in the room - one is me and the other is a web dev guy/gal in disguise. As I am talking to you, the other is memorizing every detail. Next thing you know, I am dumping you and my developer is reproducing. You get where I am going with this? wink

Personally, the only way I am doing a demo/mock up or whatever from you is if you are paying me major dough. Otherwise, all you will get from me, highest, na power point presentation laying out, in english, the direction I will be taking your site to grin
