A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake killed at least 70 people as it rocked south Asia on Monday, including 12 Afghan girls crushed to death in a stampede as they tried to flee their collapsing school.LAY VIDEO Nepal Earthquake: How Avalanches Work Mt. Everest recently experienced an avalanche after an earthquake devastated Nepal. How does one trigger the other? Thousands of frightened people rushed into the streets in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India as the quake shook a swathe of the subcontinent. It was centered near Jurm in northeast Afghanistan, 250 kilometers (160 miles) from the capital Kabul and at a depth of 213.5 kilometers, the US Geological Survey said. Deadly Nepal Quake Devastates Vast Region: Photos The epicenter is just a few hundred kilometers from the site of a 7.6 magnitude quake that struck in October 2005, killing more than 75,000 people and displacing some 3.5 million more, although that quake was much shallower. The death toll rose rapidly Monday amid reports of buildings reduced to rubble, with Pakistan heavily hit. Horrifying news emerged of at least 12 schoolgirls being trampled to death in a northern Afghan province. Nepal Landmarks Destroyed By Quake: Photos "The students rushed to escape the school building in Taluqan city (capital of Takhar), triggering a stampede," Takhar education department chief Enayat Naweed told AFP. "Twelve students, all minors, were killed and 35 others were injured." Separately, in Nangarhar province bordering Pakistan, Six people were killed and 69 injured, Najeeb Kamawal, head of the local public hospital told AFP. At least 28 people were known to have died in Pakistan's northern tribal areas, 20 in the northwest, three in Gilgit-Baltistan and one in Pakistani Kashmir, various officials told AFP. Eight children were among the dead in Pakistan. Nepal Earthquake: Health Threats Loom Over Survivors The quake, which lasted at least one minute, shook buildings in Kabul, Islamabad and New Delhi. At least one aftershock hit shortly afterwards, with the USGS putting its magnitude at 4.8. In a statistical prediction on its website, the agency said there was a one-third chance of the number of fatalities climbing to between 100 and 1,000 people, with several million dollars' worth of damage likely caused. Iran Magnitude-7.8 Quake Strongest In 50 Years The rescue effort was being complicated by the lack of communications, with the region's already-fragile infrastructure hit. Gul Mohammad Bidar, deputy governor of Badakhshan in Afghanistan, told AFP lines were down and it was difficult to reach stricken communities. “The earthquake was very powerful -- buildings have been damaged (in Faizabad) and there are possible casualties. We have sent a team around the capital Faizabad to assess the scale of the destruction.”

The General Overseer of Household of God Church, Lagos, Rev. Chris Okotie, on Sunday said former President Goodluck Jonathan wouldn’t have contested the 2015 presidential election in which he lost, had he not been misled by what he called Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor’s “false” prophecy. He said that the former president had initially made up his mind not to seek re-election but that Oritsejafor, who is the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, “deceived” him with tales of victory as prophesied unto him by God. Okotie, who said this while delivering a sermon in his church on Sunday in Lagos, said, “Pastor Oritsejafor deceived Jonathan with a false prophecy from God that he (Jonathan) would win the election convincingly”. He said, “The man (Jonathan) became convinced to contest after Oritsejafor had told him, using CAN’s name, that God had ordained him the winner of the 2015 presidential election”. The former secular musician turned gospel preacher, claimed that some members of CAN and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria at that time, knew Oritsejafor’s prophecy was false, but were too afraid to speak out. He said, “They couldn’t speak out because they were scared of being insulted. They were scared of being insulted for saying rubbish. They were scared of being insulted on the pages of newspapers. So, while I continued to write and speak that Jonathan was not the man, those of them who knew the truth in what I was saying chose to keep quiet out of fear. “I told CAN and PFN that Jonathan was not of God; that whosoever would win would be one that had built a tabernacle in the presence of God. “I told CAN and PFN that Jonathan did not belong to the House of David and that since he did not belong to the household, his winning would bring more sorrow to Nigeria”. On President Muhammadu Buhari, Rev. Okotie said that his victory was an act of God, adding that his emergence was also a sign of good things to come. Quoting from first two verses of the eighth chapter of the Book of Hebrews, Okotie said, “Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heavens. “A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord picked, and not man”. |

Former British PM admits ‘mistakes’ and conflict’s role in rise of Islamic State but defends armed intervention in 2003 Blair, who will be aware of what Chilcot is planning to say about him in the long-awaited report into the Iraq war, moved to pre-empt its criticisms in an interview with CNN. He told Zakaria: “I apologise for the fact that the intelligence we received was wrong. “I also apologise for some of the mistakes in planning and, certainly, our mistake in our understanding of what would happen once you removed the regime.” But the former prime minister made clear that he still felt he made the right decision in backing the US invasion of Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein. He said: “I find it hard to apologise for removing Saddam.” Blair also made light of the claims that he should stand trial on war crimes charges and defended his policy of what he used to describe as liberal interventionism. The former prime minister contrasted what he described as “my ‘crime’” – the removal of Saddam – and the civil war in Syria. “We have stood back and we, in the west, bear responsibility for this – Europe most of all. We’ve done nothing. That’s a judgment of history I’m prepared to have.” The former prime minister indicated that he saw merit in the argument that the Iraq war was to blame for the rise of Islamic State (Isis). “I think there are elements of truth in that,” he said when asked whether the Iraq invasion had been the “principal cause” of the rise of Isis. He added: “Of course you can’t say those of us who removed Saddam in 2003 bear no responsibility for the situation in 2015.” Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish first minister, responded by saying that the “Blair spin operation” had swung into action as Sir John Chilcot prepares to set out a timetable for the publication of his report.
