EducationRe: Today's Mock Jamb Was Indeed A Mockery by yemi1504: 4:52pm On Mar 31, 2023
Mummyfour:
Students from far and near went to their different jamb exam centers to write the mock exams today.

The exam was supposed to be in two batches.
There was a batch A that was slated for7 am and candidates were expected to have been seated by 6:30 am, then there was the 9 am batch and the candidates were also expected to have been in their centers by 8:30 am.
I actually took my daughter to the CBT professional test centre at bwari FCT not few metres away from the JAMB head office here In Abuja, that was her center.
It was an annoying situation when even as at 12:30 pm the candidates that were billed for the 7am exams had not started.

Parents that were waiting for their children became apprehensive and couldn't just understand what the delay was about.
Most of the children had not eaten and some parents had actually done drop off with the mind of coming later for their ward.

Most of the children that had been dropped off, had no money, phones or even food because they felt they could endure whatever hunger until after the exams.

At about 12:40pm, 3 coaster buses drove into the centre and the staff and security personnel at the centre began to direct some of the children to get on the buses.
In the process, some parents raised alarm and began to shout even as they wondered at the rationale behind such action.
At a point some of the children that had seen parents yelling at them to get off the buses, quickly did.

Meanwhile before then, no body not a even staff came out to address the waiting parents as to what was really going on, and when parents asked them, all they were told was that network was slow thereby affecting "thumb printing", for 6 hours?

It was at the point when parents were yelling at the gate that the Registrar of Jamb drove in with 3 Hilux trucks of security men armed to the teeth.

He grudgingly stepped out to address the parents because they compelled him to.
Before then, parents had begun to look for snacks and drinks for their children who had started complaining of hunger. They kept on coming to the gate to talk and complain to their parents, because they were not in the exam hall, but under a makeshift tent.
Some were even feeling sleepy and tired after staying up late to read at night.

The Registrar with every sense of pomposity told us that we were breaking the law because we came close to the gate to give our hungry children food and drinks.
It's not as if they made any provisions for the children o.

We were even expecting him as a father to sympathize with the children and beg them for understanding being their fault that their systems were not working.

When he said that, all hell let loose.
Parents began to scream at him out of anger, because we were expecting some kind of explanation or even apologies. Instead he told us that we should not have come close to the gate.

I asked him how we would have been able to pass on the food items to our children, and that if they had done the right thing, there would not have been any reason for parents to come close to the gate.
At that question, he began to ramble and tell us stories of network failure and all those annoying lies.

He subsequently told us that the second batch were to get on the buses and go and write the exam in jamb office.

A parent asked how the children will come back to the original center they were posted and he swore that the buses will bring them back

To cut the story short, the exams actually started at 3:45pm and ended at 5:30pm.

And the shocker we received was that those children that were taken to the jamb office had to trek all the way back to their former center, except for those that their parents took them their with either bikes or vehicles.

I don't know when we will get it right in this country.
Ordinary mock jamb in FCT..
So how would it be in other states and local government areas?.

It keeps getting worse every year.
And those children came out of the center broken, dissolutioned, and frustrated. You could see the children that were all fired up in the morning, and ready to do justice to the Mock exam, coming out very cold and troubled.

I have said it, let us go back to the days of shading with HB pencil abeg
It's not worth it.
We can't seem to get any thing right in this country.
Ordinary computer based test?

PoliticsRe: Opinion!!: This May Stop Election Rigging And Thuggery!!! by yemi1504: 9:59am On Mar 22, 2023

Thanks for lending your voice to this discourse, currently the electoral act does provide with having armed officials about 30-100m radius off the polling unit in the event of violence.. but then again if the armed officials have been compromised which in some states they are what next?
Hmmmm. I didn't know there was that provision! Then, heads should roll for those that compromise.
PoliticsRe: Opinion!!: This May Stop Election Rigging And Thuggery!!! by yemi1504: 5:04pm On Mar 21, 2023
Yookney:
Okay let me explain, when INEC gets reports of violence and decides not to act what next? when an electoral officer decides to be corrupt and refuses to reports results where election did not hold what next? I think giving back the people the ability to decide if their polling unit had a fair election or not is key, democracy is about the people, just like with any complaint, once 70% of any polling unit get that by law INEC will be mandated to cancel it, this take away the power from INEC or corrupt politician and put it back to the people, that's democracy in my opinion
You are right on this! Also, the public complaints will have to come with video or picture evidence so that nefarious elements who are sore losers that their party lost at their polling units do not take advantage of the system.
PoliticsRe: Opinion!!: This May Stop Election Rigging And Thuggery!!! by yemi1504: 5:02pm On Mar 21, 2023
SmartPolician:
Well, INEC gets reports of violence across the country. Where there's violence, their officials report to the higher authorities and the result is cancelled. That's what the act says and they do it. So, I am afraid your online complaint portal may not work because it will make the process cumbersome.

Going forward, I think we need to arm our police to scare bad boys from perpetuating violence during elections. For the sake of familiarity, states should interchange their policemen, including their commissioners swapped days to the election. Afterwards, they return to base.

For those who opine that we should vote online using NIN, we need to trust our INEC first before we migrate to that platform. If we vote in polling units, we all see the results and it should be uploaded on BVAS and iRev in real time. INEC needs to build trust first and increase the turnout to election before we can migrate to online voting. 2023 presidential election turnout of 17% is probably the worst in the history of the country.
That was also my idea too! The re-arming of security agents at polling units or at least close to such units is now highly sorely needed!
PoliticsRe: Opinion!!: This May Stop Election Rigging And Thuggery!!! by yemi1504: 5:00pm On Mar 21, 2023
Yookney:
The elections have come and sadly, it just didn’t meet a whole lot of expectations, going by what INEC promised and how much was made about the BVAS and IREV, although the showing of these tools (BVAS and IREV) on the off cycle elections in Osun and Ekiti did give credence to a better general election, sadly this was not the case. It must be said that the Presidential election did have so much issues with the IREV, that’s the collation portal, the BVAS did do well by accrediting and authenticating voters, also it did well by preventing over voting, however the upload from the polling unit, which was supposed to be a game changer didn’t happen as expected, this is where INEC really disappointed a lot of people.
INEC promised a better outing for the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections, having even postponed it by a week, March 18th came and INEC did perform better with most polling units opening on time and the IREV did work, over 60% of most of the results were uploaded before 10pm of election day, however despite this seemingly improved showing by INEC , the Politicians did bring another angle to thwarting election credibility, by almost unprecedented level of voter suppression and outright hooliganism and ballot box snatching leading to some polling units having the Electoral Officers abducted or in some case in connivance with thugs rewrote the results and uploaded them.
This is the crux of this write up, how do we get around this trend, The BVAS and IREV are very good inclusion to our electoral process, I believe we can add an extra layer to this progress by having what I call Voter Complaint portal. Let me explain, this portal will greatly reduce or even possibly eliminate the issue of violent take over by thugs of polling units or the case where the Polling Unit officer will be in connivance with the thugs to rewrite the election results and upload. This Voter Complaint portal will have voters of any affected polling unit the ability to fill a form online or with the use of a USSD code to register a complaint of non-compliance at their polling unit. If the Polling unit registers above 70% complaints from the voters in that unit, INEC will by law be mandated by law to cancel the results emanating from that polling unit, this automatically makes it futile to either disrupt or abduct a polling unit officer, when you know the voters in that unit have the option of registering a compliant and if they are up to 70% of the unit, the result will be cancelled.

This compliant will be logged in by specific voters of that specific polling unit, since all voters have a unique VIN, this they will use to register online and choose their polling unit they want to make a compliant on, USSD code will also be available for same compliant for those who may not have access to internet or smart phones. INEC will be mandate by law to review the results from any polling unit with over 70% complaints of the registered voters in that unit. A 7day time line will be given for voters to make their complaint. I hope this inclusion to our improvising electoral act will hopefully see an end to this thuggery and brigandage we call elections in Nigeria. Your thoughts are welcome on how this bill can be improved and pushed further to make it to the National Assembly.
Very very good idea! Keep it up! Another very good idea might be reinstating the security agencies at the polling units with arms to shoot ballot box snatchers and thugs on sight! If not, maybe a few meters to the polling units, for easy and fast mobilisation against these undesirable elements.

PoliticsRe: How INEC Goofed In Declaring Dapo Abiodun Winner Of Ogun Guber by yemi1504: 4:36pm On Mar 21, 2023
Newsextra014:
We at Vanguard for Democracy and Good Governance (VDGG), a non-governmental organisation, are amazed at the sham and shambolic process leading to the declaration of Governor Dapo Abiodun as governor-elect in Ogun State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

To say we are stupefied is an understatement, going by the obvious disregard for the section of the Electoral Act 2022, which succinctly outlines how an election may be declared inconclusive.
We recall that in the Ogun governorship election, the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) polled 276,395 while the candidate of the People’s Democratic party (PDP) polled 262,383.

The total number of cancelled votes stands at 33,750, and the difference between the top two candidates is 13,912.

The Electoral Act has it that a re-run election can be so declared if the margin of victory in an election is lower than cancelled votes.

We daresay that that election was meant to be declared inconclusive in compliance with the ‘Margin of Lead Principle’ derived from Sections 26 and 53 of the Electoral Act (as amended) and Paragraph 41(e) and 43(b) of the INEC Regulations and Guidelines.

We want to state it unequivocally that section 51, sub-sections 3 of the Electoral Act 2022 states that “Where the result of an election is cancelled, there shall be no return for the election until another poll has taken place in the affected polling unit.

A similar scenario is the case of Adamawa and Kebbi states. In Adamawa, INEC declared the governorship election inconclusive due to the margin of Governor Fintiri’s win. The margin of his win is less than the total cancelled votes. Election was cancelled in some areas with 41,796 registered voters which is higher than the margin of 31,249 between the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who polled 421,524 and the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) Aisha Dahiry Binani who polled 390,275.

Similarly, in Kebbi State too, INEC declared the poll inconclusive since the number of registered voters in those polling units cancelled amounted to 91,829; whereas, the two leading political parties in the contest, APC and PDP, polled 388,258 and 342,980 votes, respectively. The difference stands at 45,278.

We express dismay that in the case of Ogun, INEC completely disregarded the Electoral Act but went hastily to declare the APC candidate as the governor-elect.
This is, at best, an electoral anathema; hence, INEC must give an account of that mess to the electorate of Ogun State.

You cannot obey the Electoral Act in Adamawa and Kebbi, while you completely disregarded it in the Ogun scenario.

What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Vanguard for Democracy and Good Governance (VDGG) is a non-governmental organisation headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria.
Very very right! PDP should be taking this state's results to court. Definitely, sane Judiciary will order a rerun.
