Previous thread of when the suspect was first arrested in May 2023: https://www.nairaland.com/7688789/ndlea-arrests-businessmen-25-othersOperatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have again arrested a 48-year-old businessman, Christian Ogbuji.
Ogbuji was first arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on May 10, 2023, upon arrival from Uganda via Addis Ababa, onboard Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 951 for ingesting 93 pellets of cocaine weighing 1.986kg.
He was subsequently arraigned before Federal High Court 12 Abuja, presided over by Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon in charge no: FHC/ABJ/CR/192/2023, and convicted on July 13, 2023.
Ogbuji was sentenced to two years imprisonment with an option of paying a fine of N3,000,000.00.
A statement by the spokesperson for the agency, Femi Babafemi said Ogbuji paid the fine.
Babafemi added that Ogbuji also forfeited the seized 1.986 kilograms of cocaine, his international passport, 14 US dollars and 9000 Uganda shillings were found on him at the time of his arrest.
However, Babafemi stated that 16 months later, Ogbuji was arrested again on September 18, 2024, with N4.6bn worth of cocaine.
Babafemi said, “Barely 16 months after he was arrested and convicted for ingesting 93 pellets of cocaine, a 48-year-old businessman Christian Ifeanyi Ogbuji has been intercepted by operatives of the NDLEA, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja Lagos for importing 817 wraps of the same Class A drug weighing 19.40 kilograms with an estimated street value of N4,656,000,000.00.
“Ogbuji was again arrested at the Lagos airport on Wednesday, 18th September 2024, during an inward clearance of Ethiopian Airlines flight passengers from Addis Ababa to Lagos. The suspect had approached the joint examination table with a black travelling bag which was searched by an NDLEA operative who cleared the luggage.
“In a dubious move, Ogbuji sneaked back to the carousel area to put inside the cleared bag a black backpack he left on the conveyor’s belt. As he made his way out of the arrival hall, vigilant NDLEA officers intercepted him and subjected him to a secondary search.
“It was then large wraps of excreted cocaine were found concealed inside the backpack hidden in the black travelling bag that was earlier found with the suspect. A total of 817 pellets of cocaine excreted by many traffickers in Addis Ababa weighing 19.40kg belonging to different members of a drug cartel were recovered.”
Babafemi said during an interview with the suspect, that he initially left the backpack containing the drug at the carousel area as a strategy to beat NDLEA operatives, adding that he never knew there could be a secondary search since he had presented his bag for search previously and nothing incriminating was found.
Babafemi said the suspect claimed he had to procure a new international passport to continue his criminal trade.
“Investigation reveals Ogbuji is an unrepentant kingpin within the network of drug cartels operating between Brazil, Ethiopia, Nigeria and others in the West African sub-region like Benin, Togo, Ghana, Liberia, and Cote d’Ivoire,” he added. https://punchng.com/ndlea-arrests-ex-convict-for-importing-n4-6bn-cocaine/

Politics › Judge Hands Off Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial, Remits Case File Back To Chief Justice by Yibo(op): 12:16pm On Sep 24, 2024 |
The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, on Tuesday, asked Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja to recuse herself from his trial.
Kanu spoke from the dock at the resumed proceeding in the seven-count terrorism charge the FG preferred against him.
While his lawyer, Mr. Alloy Ejimakor was trying to persuade the court to suspend the trial on the basis that his client was denied the opportunity to prepare his defence, Kanu, sprang up from his seat and ordered him to sit down.
“Sit down! I say you should sit down!” Kanu bellowed from the dock.
Continuing, he said: “My lord, I have no confidence in this court anymore and I ask you to recuse yourself because you did not abide by the decision of the Supreme Court.
“I can understand it if the DSS refuses to obey a court order, but for this court to refuse to obey an order of the Supreme Court is regrettable.
“I am asking you to recuse yourself from this case,” Kanu stated.
At this juncture, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, urged the court to ignore Kanu’s position, insisting that the Supreme Court directed that he should be tried on the pending seven-count charge.
“The Justices ordered this court to proceed with the hearing of the charge against the defendant. My lord, you should not recuse yourself on the basis of this mere observation which does not have anything to do with the Supreme Court. It is an incompetent observation. We urge this court to proceed with the hearing,” FG’s lawyer submitted.
Not done, Kanu, rose again from the dock, waving a copy of what he described as the subsisting judgement of the Supreme Court.
He read a portion where the apex court held that actions of the trial court in the matter “rendered the impartiality of the judge suspect.”
“But my lord, you know that I love you. It is just that this court is allowing the defence to railroad me into a trial that is at variance with every provision of the Constitution,” Kanu added.
After she had expressed her dissatisfaction with the development, Justice Nyako said she was not willing to continue with the case.
“I hereby recuse myself and remit the case file back to the Chief Judge,” she held.
The court had earlier okayed FG’s request to shield the identities of witnesses billed to testify in the matter.
It will be recalled that Kanu was first arrested in Lagos on October 14, 2015, upon his return to the country from the United Kingdom, UK.
Justice Nyako had on April 25, 2017, granted him bail on health grounds, after he had spent about 18 months in detention.
Upon the perfection of the bail conditions, he was on April 28, 2017, released from the Kuje prison.
However, midway into the trial, the IPOB leader escaped from the country after soldiers invaded his country home at Afara Ukwu Ibeku in Umuahia, Abia State, an operation that led to the death of some of his followers.
Kanu was later re-arrested in Kenya on June 19, 2021 and extraordinarily renditioned back to the country by security agents on June 27, 2021.
Following the development, the trial court, on June 29, 2021, remanded him in custody of DSS, where he remained till date.
On April 8, 2022, the court struck out eight out of the 15-count charges that FG preferred against him on the premise that they lacked substance.
Likewise, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, on October 13, 2022, ordered Kanu’s immediate release from detention even as it quashed the charge against him.
Dissatisfied with the decision, FG took the matter before the Supreme Court, even as it persuaded the appellate court to suspend the execution of the judgement, pending the determination of its appeal.
While deciding the appeal, the Supreme Court, on December 15, 2023, vacated the judgement of the appellate court and gave FG the nod to try the IPOB leader on the subsisting seven-count charge. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/09/breaking-judge-hands-off-nnamdi-kanus-trial-remits-case-file-back-to-cj/

He spoke out at the open court while asking herself to recuse herself from his trial.
Justice Binta Nyako then replied that she would be happy to recuse herself from the trial, and had no problem with his request.
She said she would be sending the case file back to the chief judge for reassignment and further necessary actions.
Kanu then vehemently ordered his counsel, Alloy Ejimakor to sit down while he stood up from the dock to address Justice Nyako.
He based his remarks on the Supreme Court’s decision which questioned the jurisdiction of where the alleged broadcast that the federal court is charging him on was made.
He also read a part of the judgment of the Supreme Court, where alleged bias against Justice Nyako was raised.
Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 by the Federal Government and brought to the country for trial on terrorism charges.
Although he pleaded not guilty to the charges, Justice Nyako declined to admit him to bail on the ground that he jumped the earlier one in which Senator Abaribe was his surety. Kanu has since been in the custody of the Department of State Services on the order of the Federal High Court, Abuja. https://www.channelstv.com/2024/09/24/nnamdi-kanu-asks-justice-nyako-to-recuse-herself-from-his-case/
