BusinessNAIRA Expected To Hit 300 Against Dollar In December by yinka2011(op): 4:34pm On Nov 27, 2015
Nov 27 (Lagos) - Bank of America will halt Dollar supply to Angola at the end of this month, a move which is likely to pile more pressure on the Angolan Kwanza.

The Angolan Kwanza is in the same boat as the Nigerian Naira, it was devalued 30% officially over the last year and by much more in parallel markets.

Angola like Nigeria has suffered due to the sharp decline in crude oil prices over the past year.

The Naira has been devalued by 28% officially but in reality the devaluation is more than 40% as it trades at 242 against the USD at parallel markets currently.

The latest worry for Nigerians would be if Bank of America or other International banks would also stop supplying Dollars to Nigerian banks?

In a mind boggling move, the Central Bank of Nigeria chose to cut its benchmark lending rate by 15% earlier this week. Such a sharp cut in interest rates is sure to pile pressure on the Naira. While the interest rate cut helps borrowers it leads to a weaker currency a fact which is agreed upon by economists worldwide. So what was the CBN thinking when they made that decision? only they can tell you that. But when the Naira accelerates its free fall next month, don't expect the CBN to come to rescue going by their record over past few months.

If foreign banks stop supplying Dollars to Nigeria, we can expect the Naira to hit 300 in parallel markets in a matter of weeks if not days.

CHINA devalues YUAN by 2%, fears of currency war

Aug 11 (Lagos) - China devalued the yuan by 2% today which made the US Dollar stronger and crude oil cheaper. Commodities fell across a board and markets sold off in Asia as analysts tried to understand the implications of the devaluation.

China is an export based economy and a currency devaluation makes their goods more competitive in global markets. The big worry is that whenever Chinese Yuan weakens it has a rippling effect on regional currencies like the Singapore Dollar, Indonesian Rupiah and South Korean Won. It could lead to currency devaluation war in the region as these other counties also try to make their goods more competitive in the world markets.

Singapore Dollar hit a 5 year low today. Malaysian Ringgit and the Indonesian Rupiah hit lows which have not been seen since the currency crisis of 1997 when they lost most of their values and led to economic disaster.

Crude Oil prices fell as the dollar strengthened. Brent crude was last down 32 cents a barrel at $50.09.

China has been buying into its stock market for the past couple of months in order to protect against a total sell off. It is a big worry for analysts as the latest move will make investors even more jittery about holding stocks there.

BusinessBack To Work After Eid Break - What You Need To Know (business & Finance) by yinka2011(op): 11:07am On Jul 21, 2015
July 21 (Lagos) - Back to work after the Eid break and there are some updates from the world of finance and business.

An Ijaw community in the south south (Niger Delta) has asked foreign oil Companies to vacate the areas or face consequences. The Ijaw communities are hosts to flow- stations and well heads operated by Chevron Nigeria Ltd, Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Neconde Energy Ltd, Shell Development Petroleum Company (SPDC) and Agip. The area is also one of the most backward in the Country in terms of infrastructure and healthcare development.

President Buhari is on the US Tour where he has met with US President Obama and both spoke about insurgency facing Nigeria. President Buhari also spoke at an event organized by the US Chamber of Commerce about need for greater business relationship between the two countries. Obama told reporters in the Oval Office that Buhari had integrity and “a very clear agenda in defeating Boko Haram extremists of all sorts inside his country.”

There were insurgent attacks over the weekend where multiple people were killed in Northern Nigeria increasing the security levels.

Crude Oil prices declined in the US below $ 50 a barrel briefly before rebounding to $ 50.50 a barrel. As more and more analysts realize the impact of what the Iran deal will cause in the oil markets there is increased selling in futures markets. The deal is particularly dangerous to Nigeria crude oil exports because Iran will target crude oil sales to India which was one its biggest customers before it become Nigeria's biggest customer due to sanctions on Iran.

US Banks reported big gains in net profits for the second quarter. Citigroup stock jumped to a six year high on Friday. Technology Company APPLE will report its June quarter today in New York and analyst expect quarterly sales to be above $ 51 billion ( N 10 Trillion ).

That 10 Trillion Apple quarter is calculated on the offical (inter-bank) exchange rate of N 199 to one USD. In the parallel market the Naira is heading towards the 250 mark and causing headaches to investors and businesses.

Back to Lagos and the Nigerian Stock Exchange will open shortly so everyone hoping for Thursday's rally to continue on today.

The negative sentiment surround the oando stock is very high. The company only released its Audited result for 2013 and Q,1 and Q2 results for 2014 but its audited result for 2014 is not yet filed with NSE not to talk of Q1 and Q2 2015. Its EPS is very low, it P/E is 80+ All these plus faling crude oil no economy policies direction make the oando stock to fall. It will still fall more than N12. It has not bottom out. Transcorp droped by 5.2 percent in Revenue and also drop 11.8 percent in EPS in Q1, EPS was also droped in Q2 2015 by 45 percent. This poor performace droped its price daily. Its price has not botom out, is still going to fall further.

BusinessIran Deal Is Bad News For Nigerian Crude Oil Exports by yinka2011(op): 11:59am On Jul 15, 2015
The Iran deal will lead to more supply of crude oil in the International market by 2016-2017. Iran is a major crude oil producer and not a member of OPEC. So far the economic sanctions have limited how much crude oil Iran could produce and which countries could buy crude oil from Iran. For example in 2013, India was mandated to reduce its crude oil purchases from Iran.

Iran's loss was Nigeria's gain as India increased purchase of Nigerian crude oil and became the top buyer of Nigerian crude in the world. Currently India buys 745,000 barrel of crude from Nigeria everyday which is foreign exchange earnings of $ 43 million for Nigeria daily. Sanctions had meant that India could import no more than 9 million tonnes of crude oil this year the same volume it had shipped from Iran in 2013-15.

With the prospects of lifting of sanctions on Iran in 2016, that demand from countries like India could shift back to Iran which has historically sold its crude at a discount to the International crude oil prices.

Crude oil prices declined immediately after the Iran deal was announced but then rose as traders realized that the Iranian crude oil supply will not hit International markets for some time.

Iran produces close to 3 million barrels of crude per day and that level of production is after the impact of sanctions that limit their production. It also has about 35 million barrels of oil in storage currently in vast floating tankers ready to be exported at any time. When the sanctions are lifted in 2016 this production could rise over 4 million barrels per day. So although there is no immediate increase in supply in International market we can expect that increase in supply to come in Q3 2016 onward.

The outlook for crude oil prices for 2016 just turned negative and traders expect prices to decline further because of increase in supply.

For Nigeria, it is important to sign long term future agreements with its current buyers to risk losing them in future.

InvestmentOLUMIDE SOKABI (PHOTO) Won The Easykobo Naija Stock Market Simulation Program by yinka2011(op): 4:22am On May 23, 2015
May 23 (Lagos) - The Season 4 of the Nigerian stock market simulation competition was won by a player with the nick name ' HOLM '. Now it is time to reveal the person behind the nick name (that's his picture) and also see how he did it. Following is transcript of email interview with HOLM who is an architect and was getting a masters degree in the United States while he was competing in the Stock Trials and winning hands down.

Who is "HOLM" ?

My NAME IS OLUMIDE SOKABI. I Trained as an Architect, and worked as one in the city of Lagos, before earning a Masters Degree in Project Management in the US. I worked with Louis Berger, a Project Management firm involved in Major Infrastructure Project across the Globe. I am home in Nigeria at the moment.

How did you hear about Easykobo?

I have a strong passion for investment and i have allocated a lot of time daily to seek pockets of to investment education, tips, knowledge so its no surprise i found out about Easykobo during one of those online search. I believe it happened indirectly via a third party or trough one of your post on stockmarketnigeira.com or twitter. The game was brilliant for me in that, it offered a platform to horn my skills, and learn by putting my investment ideas and decision making skills to test.

How did you get such an amazing ROI in the stock trials? what stocks did you pick?

Few things stood out: There was no fear of failure cos there is nothing to loose, that alone provided the thrust to carefully analyzing prevailing information, data and market momentum and make bold choices. So, I keenly favored hot company news, market mood and momentum and lastly company fundamentals to make quick calls. Where my choices were great, i maximized the gains and quickly cut loses where i go wrong.

I did all these knowing i will have to repeat some of those steps with real money. My stock pick varies and changes at the speed of light, i took decisions quickly because new information and market updates come pretty qickly so, i learned alot form the experiences.

What advise do you have for young investors in Nigeria?

Our background knowledge and experiences in everyday life, events in the global and local community be it politics, economy, sports or commodities etc provide strong background knowledge to analyze specific stocks or the market at large. A clear example is the impact of these on the Nigerian Stock Market in 2014.

Also the Stock Market should always be understood for its primary role of capital formation to build, develop and support great business and not a place of ponzi scheme.

How do you see the stock market in the next 3-5 years.

While i have my concerns about the Nigerian State, I am bullish about the economy and the Stock Market. The easiest way to see where the stock market will be in 3-5 years is to look into the following:-

1. The growth in per-capital income and disposable income

2. The development and growth of the middle class

3. The youth component of our demography(potential consumers)

4. The change(increase) in the GDP size over the years.

5. The stock market as it is today, will be a fraction of its size in 3-7years.

So thats HOLM in his own words for you. We must also tell you that he never showed up to collect his prize in spite of our repeated attempts. That's just the kind of people that use the stock trials. Its not about the material prize here but about the invisible learning and education that is unparalleled and will stay with you forever. If you want to feel the Nigerian stock market without the financial risk we suggest you sign up for the Season 5 which will start soon.

Some serious stock investors like HOLM , INVESTEM LTD , 1HIMSELF , RAMJAS10, SUNNYDOUG, BADMUS , FEMI and maybe even NINJA will see you there.

InvestmentRe: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by yinka2011: 11:20am On Nov 14, 2014
Nov 13 (Lagos) - Today was a unique day at the Nigerian Stock Exchange as the All Share Index rose sharply towards the end of trading when DANGCEM posted a rise of 10% and took the stock market from -1% to positive 1% in a matter of minutes. That's because DANGCEM is the most capitalized stock of the NSE and its movement dictates the movement of the stock market in Nigeria.

But the worrying signals are all over the place despite the late rally in stocks today. The price of Brent Crude Oil has declined to almost $ 80 a barrel today in London.

The Naira declined past 172 at the inter-bank window today. Most analysts now concur that Naira will see a significant devaluation within the next few months. Majority of people who voted in Easykobo opinion poll on the subject also reflect a similar sentiment.

So stocks somehow rose today in the middle of such negative news for the economy. The disconnect between economic reality and stock exchange was evident today. Stocks that rose 10% or almost 10% today are CADBURY , DANGCEM , TRANSCORP , IKEJAHOTEL and UNILEVER .

Crude oil stocks obviously fell with OANDO down 3.6%, FO down 2.4%, ETERNA down 4.73%, SEPLAT down 5%.

But be careful going forward because unless the Brent crude oil price rebounds this rally of today is going to be washed away tomorrow or next week.

InvestmentOANDO PLC Stock Price Is At 3 Year High - Time To BUY? by yinka2011(op): 8:04pm On Dec 30, 2013
Oando stock price is rising sharp. what do you think, is this the time to buy oando stocks?

Dec 27 (Lagos) - Share of Oando Plc closed at a new one year high today of N 19.97 per unit at the Nigerian Stock Exchange in Lagos. The stock hit these levels on almost volume of 6.9 million units which is less than half the volume as its a daily average 90 day volume. OANDO was higher by 5.11% today adding to gains of this week.

The last time this stock saw these levels was on April 12 2012 when it declined from N 21 per unit to N 19 per unit. Shareholders of this company has long suffered and only now they seem to be recovering a little bit. That is specially true for long term investors of this company who have seen their stock continuously decline from N 120 levels in April 2010. The value destruction in this stock over the past 3 years has been huge.

There is a new momentum in this stock backed by the anticipation of the completion of the Connoco Phillips acquisition deal which is expected by the end of January 2014. This deal could create the biggest Nigerian owned oil company that is fully diversified in the oil and gas sector.

There is also optimism from the Oando Marketing subsidiary which has signed a deal with a German bank to provide capital to micro finance banks in the country to lend to low income householders to enable them to buy Oando's N 800 LPG cooking gas cylinder and shift millions of householders away from cooking on kerosene fuel.

There is also big optimism the gas to power sector that OANDO operates in. The company already owns a gas fired power plant in Lagos with a huge pipeline across the state. Company is also completing a huge pipeline in the eastern part of the country. The Oando Energy Resources could emerge a power company in future as there is plenty gas supply in Nigeria that can be used to provide electricity to people of the country. While some argue that cost of gas power is significantly higher compared to traditional sources, it is also a fact that the traditional sources of power have failed to consumers for so long.

While all this seems good for the company, many analysts continue to doubt all the progress that the company is saying that it is making. Maybe the dilution that occurred during the rights issue is playing on the minds of some of those analysts. It may also be the reason different analysts in the country have opposing views of the stock of this company.

Analysts at FBN Capital In Ikoyi have a price target of N 19.80 for OANDO.

Analysts at Vetiva Research in Victoria Island maintain at outperform rating and a price target of N 19.24 per unit for OANDO.

Analyst at Asset and Resource Management Limited (ARM) in Ikoyi have a 'sell' rating on the stock with a price target of N 16.05 per unit for OANDO.

So investors have a lot to consider before the decide to buy into this or watch from the sidelines. It is a decision that has to be made carefully as where this is going is anybody's call.
