Abayomi love fish farming, he has a deep passion for sustatinable food production for the populace He has been doing this before securing his new job, though on a small scale. To create more income streams. He invested in ponds, stocked fish, purchased feed, and hired a farm attendant to manage the daily operations. The challenge was simple: Abayomi have to travel to meet up his sales target His work commitments meant he visit the farm occasionally. He relied heavily on phone calls, occasional updates, and the assumption that everything was running smoothly. At first, it seemed to be working. But behind the scenes, problems were quietly building. Some days, the fish were overfed. Large amounts of feed were thrown into the ponds without proper observation. Much of it went to waste, affecting water quality and increasing production costs. Other days, the fish were underfed. Feed shortage were not reported on time for replenishment. Then feed started disappearing. The quantity of feed being consumed did not match the growth performance of the fish. Some was wasted, some was poorly managed, and some could not be accounted for. Because the owner was rarely present, the warning signs went unnoticed. The situation became worse when fish began disappearing too. A few fish here and there seemed insignificant. But over several months, the losses accumulated into hundreds of fish and a substantial reduction in expected revenue. Water management also suffered. Water exchange was inconsistent. Pond conditions deteriorated. Fish became stressed, growth slowed, and mortalities increased. The attendant reported only what he understood, but lacked the experience to identify problems before they became costly. The shock came at harvest. Feed costs were far higher than projected. Survival rates were lower than expected. Fish sizes were inconsistent. The revenue generated was nowhere near what Abayomi had planned. Months of effort and investment produced disappointing results. The painful lesson was not that fish farming is unprofitable. The lesson was that fish farming requires active ownership. There is an old agricultural saying: "The best and most valuable fertilizer on the farm is the owner's feet." No employee, report, or phone call can fully replace the value of the owner being physically present, observing, supervising, and making timely decisions. Fish farming does not demand that the owner does everything personally, but it does require attention, oversight, and involvement. Many farms fail not because of disease or poor markets, but because the owner becomes absent. Before investing in fish farming, ask yourself: Will I have enough time to properly supervise this business? Because sometimes, the most expensive mistake a farmer can make is leaving the farm entirely in someone else's hands. — The Hidden Sides of Fish Farming Nobody Posts Online

Muyiwa was tired. Tired of seeing people post: “Fish farming changed my life.” “₦500k profit in 4 months.” “Catfish farming is the new oil.” Everywhere he turned on Facebook and YouTube, somebody was smiling beside ponds and holding big fish. So one day, he made a decision. He borrowed money. Five Million naira Money from cooperative. Money from friends. Money from family savings. Because in his mind, fish farming was simple: 👉 Buy fish. 👉 Feed fish. 👉 Sell fish. 👉 Make profit. What nobody told him was that fish farming can humble a grown man emotionally. Muyiwa had no mentor. Only Online Social Media Mentors No practical training. Though he has little understanding of feed and feeding based on what was told online, but lack understanding of stocking density, grading, fish behavior, sales and marketing But confidence was high. He stocked 5000 of post-fingerlings immediately because he wanted “Good ROI.” The first few weeks looked exciting. The fish were active. They rushed feed aggressively. Friends visited the farm and praised him, uploaded the videos and posted it He started calculating profit in his head already. Then reality started quietly. First problem: Feeding reduced. Then mortality started. 2 fish. 5 fish. 12 fish. People told him: “That one is normal.” So he ignored it. One morning, he got to the pond and saw dozens floating. Dead. That was the first day panic entered his heart. He changed water anyhow. Added salt because somebody online recommended it. Reduced feed. Add bitter leaf, add antibiotics Increased feed again. Nothing was coordinated because he never truly understood what he was doing. Then, the price of feed went up as a result of inflation. Almost every week, the price of fish was going up. The money he borrowed was disappearing faster than the fish were growing. Soon, feeding became fear. Every bag opened felt like money burning. He started Rationing, someone advised him to formulate local feed to save cost. He did, then another problem for a newbie. Then water management became a problem because of the sinking feed that pollutes water so fast, he would have to pump water more than expected. At this point: The fish were not growing uniformly. Some were big. Many were tiny. His Cost started going up because of frequent water changes Cannibalism had reduced the pond density because he never graded on time. The locally formulated feed was not giving the expected result. The nutrient requirements were not met Like Yakubu, he endured and ‘managed’ for 4 months. But the biggest shock came during sales. The buyers he expected never showed up. When they showed up the price was ridiculous. Middlemen even offered worst prices. Some said: “The fish never reach size.” “The Price of Fish have come down” “That’s the price farmer A, B, C, D and E is selling” “Town I, J, K, L are even selling lower than town U” Meanwhile the fish were still consuming feed every single day. He had stayed additional 3 weeks beyond the expected sales day Debt pressure started building. Calls started coming. “When are you paying back?” “How far with the farm?” “You said harvest was this month…” Muyiwa stopped sleeping well. Praying, the fish should not die. Hoping the price will go up. The same business that looked exciting online was now giving him anxiety in real life. One evening, after calculating his expenses, he realized something painful: He was not farming fish anymore. He was feeding debt. More than 40% of his capital has gone. This is the hidden side of fish farming nobody posts online. Many people enter this business because of motivation… Filtered Online Post, etc. But stay trapped because they ignored Preparation. Fish farming is profitable. But experience matters. Mentorship matters. Training matters. Planning matters. Starting small Can teach you a lot. Before you borrow money for fish farming… Please learn first. — The Hidden Sides of Fish Farming Nobody Posts Online (Series), by Olaide Abayomi

Many farmers productivity is lost to inadequate water or Poor water Quality. Poor water quality leads to longer production cycle, disease outbreak, and increased cost of production. Indeed, Water Quality comes first for successful fish production. It is no doubt that quality water affects the Health and Growth of the fish. Despite the huge amount farmers spent on feeding and managing their fish business, there are still complaints about poor growth and cases of mortalities. Due to the growth/increase in Aquaculture activities to meet the ever-growing human population, the aquatic environment is been bastardized due to the spread of disease, and surface and groundwater pollution by waste discharge. Excessive use of chemicals and drugs, accumulation of fish feaces, decomposition of dead fish, and indiscriminate disposal of fish waste such as offals and others have resulted in the pollution of surface and ground water such that what we considered to be fresh water is no longer fresh this day either coming from the stream or borehole causing poor growth in fish No doubt, deterioration of the rearing Water Quality is one of the great issues of concern for many fish farmers. Subsequently, poor water quality induces Emanciation in fish. Water pollution in aquaculture is unavoidable as a result of the fact that fish use the water to live, feed, grow, and excrete waste. The most common method in the maintenance of aquaculture fish water is frequent water changes, and this is becoming laborious, and expensive and often introduces pathogens into the system. For the aquaculture industry to grow, a key issue that the industry must pay serious attention to increasing productivity is on Enhancing Water Quality. Agricare Standard Plus Ltd has been concerned about addressing the challenges of fish farmers in Nigeria. The company is currently looking at the Role Nutrition and Water Quality plays in helping farmers Enhance their catfish business. Our recent innovative product in Water Quality Management has received huge validation from industry large players like Eny-keen Multinational Farms, Ibadan, Oyo State, All-Amin Farm, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, and various other farms across Nigeria. Aquarem has been labeled as the "Future of Fish farming" In a recent trial conducted on Eny-Keen Multinational for 6 months. Mr. Eniola Abiodun expresses his satisfaction and surprise at the outcome of the trial as overwhelming and that no result in his over 10 years of experience has come close to the result he had Using the Agricare Aquarem Solution. In our video interview during the harvest of the said fish with this humbled, God-fearing, and astute businessman/fish producer. Mr. Eniola Abiodun who could not hide his joy said his expectation from the trial pond was just 1 ton of fish but ended up harvesting 5 tons of fish. Mr. Abiodun highlighted 6 vital take home from his experience and what Aquarem means for fish farmers that want to remain and thrive in business in 2023 and beyond. Beyond Better Water Quality function of the Aquarem, here are additional benefits of using Aquarem 1. Increased Feed Efficiency: According to him he was feeding the fish 60% less of the actual feed required for the period of the trial. The result was, even the ponds where fish are fed to the required quantity did not perform to the trial pond. Increasing feed efficiency is one of the attributes of Aquarem Probiotics which leads to reduced cost of production 2. Increased Stocking Density: Unbalance of nutrients with reduction of dissolved oxygen - a phenomenon known as eutrophication has pushed many farmers to stock less than the desired stocking density. Aquarem probiotics remove the different forms of nitrogen from the pond leading to an improved water condition, such as increased dissolved oxygen and reduction of ammonia. Aquarem also optimize the decomposition of organic waste and converts them effectively. 3. Prevention of Mortality: Maintenance of the pond microbial community is also another attribute of AquaRem. This is to ensure that pathogenic bacteria do not dominate the community. Aquarem ensures the balance of the microbial community by limiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria. These activities improve fish health and productivity. Mr Eniola told our team that no mortality was recorded during the trial of Aquarem. This is the same pond where mortality was an issue before Aquarem was introduced 4. Low Cost of Production: Aquarem reduce sediments in ponds and make it more compact, the nitrogen dispersed in the water is reduced and the Oxidation Reduction Potential is much improved. As a result of the activity of Aquarem in this regard, the need for frequent change of water which is laborious, and expensive is eliminated. Because fish health is also well maintained, there will be no need for use of drugs and other chemical. Feed efficiency also lowers the cost of feeding bringing about an increase in return on investment. 5. Guaranteed Water quality all-Year round: Lack of adequate water supply has pushed many farmers out of business. With Aquarem Solution, farmers do not need to worry about water shortage again. The composition of Aquarem ensure that farmers are guaranteed Quality water all year round and eliminate dependent on water from rain, borehole and stream which are often contaminated with pathogens. For the period of the trial that last 6months not a single drop of water was introduced into the trial pond and the result remain amazing 6. Uniformity in fish Size: Another observation made during the trial was a significant uniform growth in the pond compared to others. Fish farming under an optimum condition can offer an alternative solution to reducing cost of production in fish production. With proper Water Quality Management offered from Aquarem, farmers can increase their feed efficiency, reduced mortality, reduced frequent water changes and enhance the quality of their fish thereby, maximizing their productivity. With the testimonies and recommendation from The CEO of Eny-keen Multinational Farms it's obvious that "Aquarem is the future of Aquaculture" What is AquaRem: Aquarem is an innovative water remedy product obtained from the most advanced Biotechnologies integrated with innovative solution based on Nanotechmologies that is an effective answer to Fish water affected by pollution and /or eutrophication. Composition 1. Selected bacteria Bacillus Subtilis Bacillus Pumilus Bacillus armyloliquefaciens Bacillus megatherium 2. Enzymatic Pool 3. Growth Starter 4. The Solution to the increasing cost of production in aquaculture might just be summaries in a word - "Optimize". Farmers have devised several ways at reducing the cost of production to the detriment of fish health and the nutritional requirement of fish. What most farmers failed to realize is the fact that everything rises and falls on nutrition, and that quality material will always equal quality nutrition while inferior materials equal inferior feed no matter how it is combined. Fish nutrition cannot be left to chances. Quality should not be sacrificed on the altar of cost or else the farmers will pay for it with low yields and higher FCR. The major determinant of quality feed/nutrition is the FCR. Many materials can be combined to form a premium feed, but this must be done under the auspices of a good animal nutritionist. The adulteration of GNC in recent times without corresponding adjustments in the formulation is clear evidence of this. Feeds are not formulated based on percentage crude protein alone. Many farmers have also fallen victim to this. They assumed that higher CP alone makes for a balanced feed. Do not make such a mistake again. Do a proper analysis of the components that make up your feed. You can always reach me on WhatsApp for assistance. That feeds alone occupies over 60% of the total cost of production should make every farmer concerned about feed and nutrition. That the current price of fish is not commensurate with the current cost of output, particularly those using commercial feed purely is another reason to look critically at the nutrition of your fish feed. So if you produce your fish feed yourself you are a step ahead of those who do not. But it doesn't end there. You must combine the knowledge with the effective utilization of available materials. If your answer to all the questions below is yes, then you might need to read this article to the end. They are: Do you want to save the cost of feeding your fish and increase your profit margin? Do you want excellent Conversion ratio/Growth for less than the price of the conventional feed? Do you wish to Enhance your fish Immune System against disease? There is no denying the Need for *Economical Feed*, particularly at a time when the price of fish remain fixed, but more also feed must be healthy and nutritionally balanced for the fish. It's important for farmers to know that feed are formulated to be *cost-effective*, not just *less-costly*. Less Costly feed has cost and is still causing a some farmers some headaches as we speak. For instance, lack of toxin binders, essential amino acid and minerals in right proportion could hamper the growth of your fish. On the other hand, a careful *selection and blending* of various traditional and alternative feed stuff with *Miaaqua Concentrate* will not only provide the needed balanced nutrient for your fish but will also help maximize your own profit. *Miaaqua Concentrate* does not alter the quality of whatever formulation you are currently using but rather improve it when applied appropriately. We have designed different mixing guide for different fish age that you can use. You can private chat to know the best mixing guide for your fish at a lower cost. We Need To Farm More Fish. To farm More fish, we need more social acceptance, to gain more social acceptance, we need friendly selling price. To sell at friendly price, we need lower cost of production, fast growth and reduced mortality. This is where SHIFT comes to play. We cannot do the same thing the same way and expect a different result. The rapid growth in aquaculture led to an increase in the demand for fishmeal. This increase in demand leads to an increase in prices and reduces the availability and quality of fish-meal. This results in the need for a better solution that is also environmentally friendly. MiaAqua protein is the innovative solution for exceptional performance of aquatic species. It is a combination of high-quality premix, proteins, amino acids and antioxidants which are highly digestible and easily assimilated for optimum production. MiaAqua protein eliminates the use of fish meal, blood meal and feather meal. Lowers feed conversion ratio, enhances growth and weight gain. Increases efficiency and performance parameters very ideal for local fish feed production; either sinking or floating We cannot afford to be at the mercy of the "Market Women". No better time to be a fish farmer than now. The first set of rabbit(2 females and 1male) was gotten from a lecturer from the University of Benin, Edo State, Nigeria around February, 2018 as a side income, healthy and nutritious meat for my family. The lecturer actually told me 'it will overwhelm you'. Truth to his word, i can really say it is overwhelming as am currently in possession of over 30 rabbit after much eating, give-aways and sales of more than 20 plus few mortality. The size is expected to double before the end of the year. Rabbits are not without their own challenges, but compare to other animals, they are far easy to manage, you just need to attend to the basic of the following; #1. Proper Hygiene #2. Good/Reliable Stock #3. Quality feed and feeding. Care must be taken when feeding with greens. Even though some of the greens like bitter leaf, scent leaf and pawpaw leaf could serve as both food and as drugs care must be taken when administering it to them. #4. Proper attention: You could easily detect a sick rabbit and take proper action that could prevent mortality in the farm if due attention is given. From my own experience, a #10.00 tetracycline has saved many time because of timely intervention. The common disease of rabbit is Coccidiosis which can be prevented and managed easily. Why not start your own backyard and commercial rabbitery today and enjoy/explore the lifeline benefits of this evolving business. For more information on how you can start your own rabbit farming, or you need a good breed to start, either for breeding purpose or meat purpose in Benin-City,Edo-State or around the south-south kindly contact us through the following Olaidemuyiwa@gmail.com 08038082109

very interesting write up and thanks op…….you nailed every aspect of it. I’m also a livestock farmer basically poultry and fish farming…..fish farming is lucrative and profitable but you need have mentorship and proper training to invest in fish farming and most importantly experience place a great role in how far you will go in the business. A lot of people don’t want to go through the ropes but they believe it just about building a pond and having fishes in the water.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. The feeling is ecstatic.
