Recently, I lost about 30 percent of my fishes to cannibalism. It wasn't a good experience but I hold myself responsible for negligence. This is the reason I am writing this piece. Most breeders don't know how much is been lost to cannibalism on a per minute basis. A lot of activities go on under the water that we are not aware of, and one of such activities is 'fish eating fish'. The popular proverb that says bird do not eat other bird's intestine do not hold for fish. As a matter of fact fish predates on themselves to grow. It is the best example of the survival of the fittest. Cannibalism is a slow-killer, it is a great reducer of fish population and can lead to monumental profit loss. This is why Grading fish into groups of similar individual sizes should be a common management practice in fish farming. To fail to observe this is to risk running into Loss. Apart from losses from cannibalism, there are other benefits of separating your fingerlings into similar individual sizes. These includes the following: 1. It helps to remove the fast-grower from the slow- growers. No matter how hard one try fish do not grow the same. Sorting however helps in separating and similar sizes into the same pond. 2. Sorting helps to reduce cannibalism. Like I stated earlier, fish predate on themselves to grow. It is an inevitable truth. Apart from mortalities, another factor that reduces the fish population drastically is cannibalism. Sorting, done regularly help to control your fish population greatly. 3. Sorting improves supplementary feeding efficiency. 'Different strokes for different folks'. Different sizes of fish requires different supplement. You cannot be assured that all your fishes have the required supplement except through sorting. Except you sort, the big ones keep getting bigger while the smaller ones remains the same. The reason is that the bigger ones takes advantage of the smaller ones by eating the better chunk of the feed while the smaller ones eat crumbs leaving them with a less nutritious feed. 4. It increases the accuracy of stock estimates for better monitoring and feed administration. More soon...

dondo83:in my own opinion, here is an idea @ birth, someone can come up with the logistics for the product development that's will suit a target market. Logistics Sir. |
dondo83:We Are talking marketing and logistics here. What's Agribusiness without You! Actually, we are the one that needs you for the plan. |
dondo83:Very insightful of you sir. But most importantly is the opportunity this development presented. For instance, smoked catfish has taken the market by storm, am also aware we now export smoked fish to Europe and others. I see another world of opportunity that I believe people cannot afford to wait for but to dive in. And you and I should see it that way and not just wait for some 'stakeholders'. We are the stakeholders sir. Thanks |
Man Of God indeed! |
dondo83:You are free to suggest one. |
Daniel058:please do bro. Do you culture them by yourself? Or harvested from poultry dung? |

In efforts geared towards achieving the Federal Government’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda, the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) has unveiled its most recent innovation in catfish canning, a concept that represents a paradigm shift in fish production. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the formation of innovation platform for stakeholders in the catfish farming and canning, organised by the institute in collaboration with Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), in Lagos, Dr.Gbola Akande, Director General/CEO, NIOMR, stated that the innovation was to effectively engage all stakeholders in developing the aquaculture industry to create jobs; create wealth through value addition, as well as increase fish production in the country. According to him, utilisation of low value small and medium sized Cat fish will increase the production of catfish in Nigeria. He said: “Canning of this medium size catfish as value addition is currently ongoing as a means of increasing their utilisation for, human consumption, investment opportunities, and product diversification, quality standardisation in the local and foreign markets, and foreign exchange earnings through export of the canned catfish.” Akande noted that the catfish canning project was funded with 100, 000 dollar grant from the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), commending the organisation for its support on the project. He noted that the objective of the innovation platform for the different aquaculture value chains was to facilitate dialogue between the main local players in the value chain, like the farmers, input suppliers, traders, transporters, processors, wholesalers, retailers, the regulators as well as research and development. “Innovation platform identified bottlenecks and opportunities in production, marketing and the policy environment. The process is galvanised through discussions on market requirements which include quantity, quality, and the timing of sales, followed by an analysis of existing production strategies. “The innovation platform identifies and implements technologies to improve production to attain market demand. In a parallel and similar process, the marketing system is analysed and improved to benefit all role players within the local context,” Akande added. In her presentation, Dr. (Mrs.) Mabel Yarhere, Head of Section of Extension Research and Liaison Services, NIOMR, noted that catfish canning is commodity, stressing that there must be cohesion to unite stakeholders for mutual interests. She maintained that the platform must have potentials to meet the interest of stakeholders on board, adding that all stakeholders must have definite contributions to make and benefits to derive from the platform. Yarhere stated that farmers, employees, materials- resources in the farm, policy makers, government and financial institutions, as well as the input (fingerlings) suppliers, brood stocks, feeds, water quality equipment and many others are to be managed. “An idea must be replicable at an economic cost and must satisfy a specific need. Innovation involves a deliberate application of information, values from resources, and includes all processes by which new ideas are generated and converted into useful products. “In business, an innovation often results when ideas are applied by the company in order to further satisfy the needs and expectations of the customers. In a social context, innovation helps create new methods for alliance, joint venturing, flexible work hours, and creation of buyers’ purchasing power.” Yarhere submitted. http://dailytimes.com.ng/niomr-commences-catfish-canning/

My own Healthy and quality catfish Fingerlings are ready; kindly place ur orders now. Thanks |
EMMALEKE2007:Thanks Mr Emman. |
row2ray:Where in Benin are you? Or else I want to question the authenticity of the test kit you are using sir. Was it Properly calibrated? If you are using a pH meter. And by the way, I do not fertilize my tarp. |
PrinceOga:A laudable one. |
row2ray:I agree bro. 10.3 seems unreasonable. But, if your pH soar like this, should you not stop allowing the water from staying too long in your pond before spawning. The idea of storing water before use is for areas with low pH like Benin. |
You asked for this, and I am delighted to
respond. Here is your guide to launching your
dream catfish business. I might not answer all
of the questions in your mind but I will do my
best to provide you with basic knowledge and
informations on how you can go about your fish
farming business and if you need more help
you will be directed on how and where to get
the best help having been provided with
foundational guide to your successful catfish
farming.
Let me quickly mention here that there are 2
main production system in catfish production:
1. The Fingerlings production(Breeding).
2. The Grow-Out Production(Table-size).
Fingerlings Production: This is the production of
‘baby fish’ through the artificial method in the
hatchery. This could either be on a small,
medium or large scale. Relatively, little space is
required to run a successful hatchery unlike its
contemporary table-size, but a lot of expertise
is involved. You need a qualified, trained and
experienced person(breeder) to put you
through; there is no short-cut to learning this
aspect of production. Study materials, videos
can only aid and support you but are not
enough knowledge for better performance. I
will write a concise report on this system of
production soon. Check here for a document on
fingerlings production http://www.fao.org/
docrep/field/003/ac182e/ac182e03.htm
Grow-Out Production: This is the rearing of fish
from fingerlings to table-size. Fish are sold at
the end of a culture period, usually, between
3-6months and above depending on your target
market(smoking size or 1kg and above). The
sizes usually ranges from 450gram – 2kg and
above. Grow-out is simple and anyone can
venture into it if the requirements are met.
Here are few steps you can take for a
successful grow-out experience:
1. Start small: I usually advise people not to
despise the days of little beginning. Even if you
have all the financial muscles I would still
advise you start small. My popular way of
saying this is ‘grow up and you will stay up’. If
you jump up, there is every possibilities you
will fall. Quite a number of people have ran
into the business and have ran out through the
another door. Tis is my desire that you succeed
in this enterprise and thus my sincere advise.
Start something small wherever you are now
while you project a larger future, by doing this
you will gain firsthand experience that cannot
be taking from you.
2. Can you take a little time to learn? The fact
that you are reading this shows you are eager
and ready to learn. My advice is to go some
step further in your learning process. The
internet is littered with informations on catfish
production that I believe can help your
understanding. Take a walk to existing farms to
ask questions, learn from their mistakes and
improve on their success where necessary.
Don’t make the same mistakes others have
conquered. This business is worth investing a
bit of your time to learning. Do not learn the
other way round.
3. You need a good water source. By water
source I mean in quantity and quality. Fish life
can be summed up in one word; Water. We
have different sources, the common ones
being well water and borehole water. Water is
the most critical factor for a successful catfish
farming. You need a water source that you can
depend on all-year round. I cannot over
emphasize the importance of quantity and
quality water to successful fish farm.
4. Count Your Cost: Just as you will never
embark on a building project without knowing
how much it will cost you. You need to know
how much feeding is required for your desired
nos of fish and to a desired size. Feeding alone
takes about 75% of the operation cost of any
livestock business. Fish business isn’t an
exemption also. Take time to ‘economize';
consider various low cost options at feeding
your fish. There are many of such options to
choose from. Do not plan on ‘Hope’, it is a bad
strategy. Start base on your available financial
resources and stick to the plan. For example,
you will need about $860 worth of imported
feeds to raise 500 pieces of catfish to 1kg and
above each. You will spend less than this if you
are considering ‘smoking size’ for the same nos
of fish. Note please: This calculation is based on
1:1 feed conversion ratio ( this is for a
particular brand of feed that I cannot mention
here, other brands of feed have their
conversion ratio) administered under an ideal
condition.
5. Quality Matters: Yes! The quality of fish you
intend stocking matters a lot. You may
administer all the feeds in the world, if the
quality of the fish seed stocked isn’t right then
nothing is right. Here is another critical factor
to consider when starting a fish farm. You need
the right breeder to choose from.
