You write as if you are the only person on Nairaland who works with Chinese or East Asians. I corrected your narrative that they're not Chinese by ethnicity. Whether they live in the US or elsewhere, they're ethnic Chinese. Just as a black African who naturalised as an American is an African by ancestry and black by race. Taiwanese, Hong Kongers, Mainland Chinese are ETHNIC Chinese. It's ethnicity not nationality. That's my point.

Thus, we've ethnic Chinese Americans competing against ethnic Chinese from Mainland China or Hong Kong. All are ETHNIC Chinese.

Taiwanese and Hong Kongers are ethnic Chinese. It's the ethnicity, not nationality that matters. Japanese rarely represent the US as they don't speak English or naturalise to be Americans.
