Education / Education Has Collapsed In Katsina –masari by yougos(m): 3:18am On Dec 29, 2014
From IHEANACHO NWOSU, Abuja

Former speaker, House of Representatives and
governorship candidate of All Progressives Con
gress (APC) for Katsina State, Bello Masari, at
the weekend vowed to make education his
priority if elected in the 2015 general election.
He said the state faced a bleak future in
education if challenges facing it were not
promptly addressed. Masari spoke at a dinner
organized for him by friends and associates at
Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

Justifying his decision to make education a
priority if elected, the former speaker said the
state had continued to record dismal
performance in critical examinations like WAEC
for three consecutive years predicting that the
situation would soon get to a point where
students from the state would no longer pass
qualifying examinations to universities.

Masari said: “If you look at Katsina State’s
WAEC results this year, out of the over 43,500
who sat for the examination, only 4,500, or if
you like, 10.2 per cent got five credits that
would enable them pursue higher education or
for them to be admitted into universities.
Therefore, in the next four to five years, it will
be hard to see graduates of Katsina State. This
is what it means.”

He blamed the pitiable situation on the
“educational decay in our state,
it is the leadership failure. Government, with
necessary commitment, could have saved the
situation and in doing that, there will be the cre
ation of job opportunities for our indigenes. If
you invest in education, all these drug addicts
that we see on the streets, you won’t see them
again, because we are responsible in making
them what they are. If government had
provided an enabling environment, provide
them with sound education; they would have
been productive to the state.

“That is why we put it to ourselves that we
must revive the dignity of our state, under our
policy of ‘Restoration Project’. We have
planned to reinvigorate primary and secondary
education in Katsina State. If you say what of
the university, yes we not unaware of the
university education, but let us make the
foundation a sound one. No matter what you
will have in the university, if the grassroots
education remains substandard, it is baseless.

“If you look at our neighbouring states, they
are doing this. Go to Kano, Osun and other APC
states, you will see how education is being ac
corded attention, and students are well kitted
with necessary learning materials. That is why
during our administration, we would make
sure that Katsina State students attend public
schools, not private ones.”

Politics / PDP Moves For Reconciliation In Imo by yougos(m): 1:43am On Dec 27, 2014
BY GEORGE ONYEJIUWA, OWERRI

Following the controversy, which trailed the
governorship primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State and the threat it
poses to the chances of the party in the
general elections, gladiators and stalwarts of
the party have embarked on fence mending.
Top officials of the party in Imo State, are said
to have been advised to close ranks and rally
support for the governorship candidate, Hon.
Emeka Ihedioha, who won the primary in a
transparent election.

Recall that the governorship primary of the
PDP held on December 8, at the Grasshoppers
Stadium in Owerri, the Imo State capital and
produced Hon. Ihedioha as winner with 346
votes followed by Senator Ifeanyi Ararume
with 336 votes. However the runner up as an
afterthought has been contesting the result of
the polls having failed to register any dissent
right at the venue of the primaries.
Sources told Saturday Sun that already the win
ner of the primary had been meeting leaders
and key stakeholders of the PDP in the state
and beyond and such moves are already
yielding results.

The sources further revealed that hitherto
hardliners opposed to Ihedioha’s victory are
said to be softening their postures and
showing willingness to put up a united front for
the PDP to make a decisive showing at the gen
eral election.

It was also gathered that the state chairman,
Nnamdi Anyaehie, a respected leader and
stabilizer of the party is anchoring the
reconciliation moves.

Politics / Jonathan’ll Defeat Buhari –mimiko by yougos(m): 1:23am On Dec 27, 2014
■ Says APC jittery

BY WOLE BALOGUN, ADO EKITI

Ondo State governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko,
has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
will defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC)
in next year’s election, noting that APC is only
deceiving Nigerians.
Speaking in Ado-Ekiti on Friday, when he visited
his Ekiti counterpart, Mr. Ayo Fayose, the
governor wondered whether APC wanted
Nigeria to change from democracy to
dictatorship.

He also exuded confidence that the PDP would
win convincingly in the South-West.

“We want APC leaders to explain to Nigerians
the change they shout all over. Are they saying
the country should change from democracy to
dictatorship? This is necessary because their
leaders, by their actions, have not shown that
they are democratic elements.

“One can see that they are already afraid in the
way they act now,” he said.
On the chances of the PDP in the coming
general elections, Mimiko said the party
understood the sophistication of elections and
the issues involved.

“In the 2011 elections, when President
Goodluck Jonathan did not have any governor
in the South-West, he won in five of the states.
Now that he has more states and subsequent
elections in Ondo and Ekiti have shown that
the winning streak is continuing, there is not
going to be any problem.

“In states like Oyo, Ogun and Lagos, the tide is
changing in favour of PDP. Political jobbers
failed to divide us in Lagos and they are jittery
already.

“I can say it without mincing words that the
APC is anxious in the South-West and all their
lies will not be able to save them from electoral
defeat,” he said.
Fayose, who chipped in briefly, said the
election would surely return President
Jonathan to office.

Rivers govt debunks allegation

… As PDP picks woman deputy governorship candidate

From TONY JOHN, Port Harcourt

Former Minister of State for Education and Rivers State governorship flag bearer of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nyesom Wike, has accused Governor Chibuike Amaechi of spending a whopping N30 billion on General Muhammadu Buhari campaign to be All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate.

Besides, he said Amaechi was deceived by the leadership of the APC to spend the state fund on Buhari, in the hope that he would be chosen as the vice presidential candidate.

He attributed the alleged non-payment of salaries of civil servants in the state to the funding of the party by the governor.

Wike stated this yesterday at a “thank-you” visit to the people of Ikwerre held in Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.

He said: “Do you know why workers’ salaries have not been paid? Amaechi spent N30 billion in funding the presidential campaign of the APC. They allowed him to spend the money and later, they called him mugu.

“They said we would not make this ‘boy’ who does not respect the president (Jonathan) the vice president. We should know that our future is in the PDP and not the APC.”

But, the state government, through the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, has debunked the allegation of Amaechi funding Buhari.

She described the claim as baseless and false, saying Wike should provide proof to back his statement.

Semenitari stated: “It is unbelievable that a man who wants to be the governor of this state can make such an unbelievable statement without any proof.

“We challenge him (Wike) to show proof that Governor Amaechi spent N30 billion to fund APC campaign.

“There are some things that are unbelievable. With what President Jonathan is giving us, N30 billion is three months allocation. Is that what he (Wike) is saying that we used for primary? Rivers State Government will not dignify such unintelligent talk with responses. We will not respond to unintelligent talk; we will not react to stupid conjecturing.”

Wike, while expressing gratitude to Ikwerre people for endorsing him to run for the gubernatorial slot, disclosed that the PDP had chosen a woman to be his running mate, adding that she would be unveiled on Tuesday. He urged Ikwerre people to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan, saying APC was not the hope of Nigerians.

He said: “We are getting women involved in decision making of the state. The campaign is now for women to take to the next level. We have gone beyond the stage of just sharing wrapper to women as empowerment. This is a new era in Rivers State. The fate of Rivers people does not lie in the opposition APC. We are for the PDP all the way”

The governorship flag bearer stated that the legacies Governor Amaechi-led government had bequeathed to Rivers people were closure of the judiciary, House of Assembly, monorail and the N50 billion Karibi-Whyte Hospital.

Wike promised the people that, if voted as governor in 2015, he would review the economic value of their lands acquired by the state government for the Greater Port Harcourt City (GPH) project.

He urged the people to remain vigilant, alleging that APC was sewing fake police uniforms in an attempt to rig the 2015 elections. Wike charged the people to resist any attempt to compromise the electoral process by the APC.

A PDP chieftain in Ikwerre Local Government Area, Ernest Wosu, regretted that Amaechi failed the people, hence the decision to support a politician with a pedigree.

Culture / Rivers State Set To Deliver Another World Class Carnival: Sam Dede(pictures) by yougos(m): 7:23am On Oct 27, 2014
BY BENJAMIN NJOKU

The Director General and CEO of the Rivers State
Tourism Development Agency, Dr. Sam Dede has
said that this year’s edition of the state-owned
cultural tourism brand: The Port Harcourt
carnival,CARNIRIV, is set to go down in history as
the most colourful and memorable carnival event
ever witnessed on the African continent in recent
times
Dede, an award winning actor and lecturer, gave
the hint at a media interactive forum held in Port
Harcourt to announce the 2014 edition of the
carnival which is scheduled to hold from Sunday,
December 14 through Saturday, December 20, in
Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
He revealed that this year’s event has been
repackaged to deliver value and cement Port
Harcourt’s reputation as a foremost tourist city in
Africa, hence the One Love, One People edition.
Speaking further, he said that an estimated
number of over five hundred thousand
participants made of residents, tourists, fun
lovers and representatives of corporate bodies
will converge on Port Harcourt during the one
week duration of the carnival with estimated daily
business exchanges running into several millions.
‘Because of the traditional high influx of carnival
lovers to our city during our annual showpiece
event, we have put in place adequate security
measures to ensure the protection of lives and
property during the entire duration of the
carnival. We are also working with other
stakeholders in the health and other key sectors
to ensure that we create a conducive
environment for our visitors,’ he said.
Dede also hinted about the technical innovation
of the 2014 edition of the carnival. ‘This year, we
are set to introduce our state-of-the-art
performance stage spanning 140 feet and
reputed as the biggest of its kind in Africa. The
stage has the capacity to hold a large collection of
performers at once and withstand heavy duty
equipments and stage accessories. The stage will
also be deployed for the first time for the benefit
of sponsors in the areas of branding and related
purposes,’ he said’
Chairman of the Board of Rivers State Tourism
Development Agency, RSTDA, Deacon Vincent
Erinwo assured that the RSTDA will judiciously
expend every fund released by the government
for the purpose of the carnival, reiterating that
the carnival is a project that is dear to the heart of
the Government and people of the state. On the
series of activities lined up for this year and the
new things tourists and the people should expect,
he said, the include the Kids Carnival, Praise Jam,
Dance of Fireflies, Keera – rhythm of the tribes,
Egelege – champion of the sand arena and Hosh
Jam. Others are the International Aquatic Fiesta,
Black African Musical Festival (BAMFEST), Raggae
360, International Heritage Parade, Garden City
Free Style Parade and the World Peace Concert.
There will also be a beauty competition tagged, “
Miss Carniriv Beauty Pageant (MCBP)” as part of
the carnival.
The pageant, slated for the 13th of December, is
a special event that will herald the carnival and
introduce the beauty of Port Harcourt and indeed
Nigeria to the world. “I will also like to add that
successful participants and fans alike are set to go
home with unique prizes and gifts as a token of
appreciation from the organisers. And there are
more that we can not reveal in one sitting”, said

Health / 7 Home Remedies For Urinary Tract Infections by yougos(m): 7:24pm On Sep 26, 2014
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the second most common reason people visit their doctors each year. Men get UTIs, but they are much more common in women — more than eight million women head to their doctor for UTI treatment annually. And 20 percent of these women will get a second UTI.
If you’ve ever had a UTI, you’ll probably never forget the symptoms. It usually starts with a sudden and frequent need to visit the potty. When you get there, you can squeeze out only a little bit of urine, and that’s usually accompanied by a burning sensation in your bladder and/or urethra. In more extreme cases you may end up with fever, chills, back pain, and even blood in your urine.
The good news is that there are many home remedies you can try to prevent or remedy a UTI. Go to the next page to learn more.

Before undertaking any course of treatment, the reader must seek the advice of their physician or other health care provider.

1. Baking Soda
UTIs that last longer than two days require medical intervention. Untreated UTIs can infect the kidneys and turn into a much more serious problem. To help prevent a UTI from developing or nip one in the bud, try adding 1 teaspoon baking soda to a glass of water as it may help ease your infection. The soda neutralizes the acidity in your urine, speeding along your recovery.

2. Blueberries
Blueberries and cranberries are from the same plant family and seem to have the same bacteria-inhibiting properties. In one study, blueberry juice was found to prevent UTIs. Since you’re not likely to find a gallon of blueberry juice at your local store, try sprinkling a handful of these flavorful, good-for-you berries over your morning cereal.

3. Cranberry Juice
Many studies have found that drinking cranberry juice may help you avoid urinary tract infections. It appears that cranberry juice prevents infection-causing bacteria from bedding down in your bladder, and it also has a very mild antibiotic affect. Drinking as little as 4 ounces of cranberry juice a day can help keep your bladder infection-free. But if you tend to get UTIs or are dealing with one right now, try to drink at least 2 to 4 glasses of cranberry juice a day. If pure cranberry juice is just too bitter for your taste buds, you can substitute cranberry juice cocktail . It seems to have the same effect as the pure stuff. Take note: If you have a UTI, cranberry juice is not a replacement for doctor-prescribed antibiotics in treating your infection.

4. Pineapple
Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapples. In one study, people with a UTI who were given bromelain along with their usual round of antibiotics got rid of their infection. Half the people who were given a placebo plus an antibiotic showed no signs of lingering infection. Eating a cup of pineapple tastes good and may just help rid you of your infection.

5. Water
If you tend to get urinary tract infections, be sure to drink plenty of water — about 8 eight-ounce glasses a day. You should be urinating at least every four to five hours. If you are currently dealing with an infection, drink buckets of water to fight it off. Drink a full 8 ounces of water every hour. The river of water in your system will help flush out bacteria by making you urinate more frequently.
You can also heat up some water on the stove and pour it into a hot water bottle. Place the water bottle on your lower abdomen to help ease any pain caused by the infection.

6. Vitamin C
Some doctors are prescribing at least 5,000 mg or more of vitamin C a day for patients who develop recurrent urinary tract infections. Vitamin C keeps the bladder healthy by acidifying the urine, essentially putting up a no-trespassing sign for potentially harmful bacteria.

7. Do’s and Don’ts
DO use it. When you’ve got to go, go. It sounds simple, but how many times have you held it — when you’re in a business meeting, when you’re stuck in traffic, when you’re at a concert and the lines are too long. If you hold your urine, you’re more likely to get a backup of bacteria and end up with an infection.
DO consider cotton. Anything that comes into close contact with any of those ultra-personal areas should be cotton. Women should wear cotton underwear or cotton-lined panty hose to help stay fresher and dryer. Guys should go for boxer shorts.
DON’T drink alcohol. Alcohol is an irritant to your bladder, just what you don’t need when you’re dealing with an infection.
DO cut the caffeine. Also avoid caffeine-loaded drinks such as caffeinated soda pop, coffee, and tea. Caffeine can irritate the bladder, which is the last thing you need when a UTI has taken hold.
DO pull out a nonprescription pain reliever. Taking acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin can help ease the pain during your infection.
DO follow the rules for making love. If you have trouble with UTIs, be sure you and your partner clean up before making love. After you make love, head to the bathroom to urinate and get rid of any potentially harmful bacteria. And try using a condom instead of a diaphragm. Diaphragms may promote UTIs.
DO go with the flow. After urinating, be sure to wipe from front to back to keep bacteria from getting close to the urethra.
These home remedies can help you prevent a UTI or eliminate one already in progress. However, be sure to check with your doctor, especially if a UTI lasts longer than two days.

Politics / Osun APC Alleges Plot To Kill Aregbesola by yougos(m): 7:29am On Jul 16, 2014
The All Progressives Congress, APC, Osun State
chapter, yesterday said it had received a red alert
that a leading opposition party contracted foreign
snipers to assassinate Governor Rauf Aregbesola
during his campaign trail.
Aregbosola
“The masterminds behind this plot are the party’s
chieftains, from a S-West state and the opposition
party”s candidate for the August 9 election in
Osun.”
According to APC, sources from within the
opposition party informed the APC that “there is
great consternation within the party that for as
long as Aregbesola is present and visible, the
election cannot be rigged, so their last option to
‘win’, according to sources, is to take out
completely the governor, and they needed the
best professional killers in the world, this is why
they have contracted the foreign firm..
“It is not clear if Abuja is involved in the plot, but
sources say that security infrastructure in the
country may not be unconnected,” APC said.
The APC recalled that it had alerted Nigerians and
the international community of the party’s plans
to militarise the state one week to the election
and terrorise APC leadership and assassinate
some of them.
