ProgrammingAre Nigerians Too Poor To Pay For Software Subscriptions Or Just Too Stingy ? by YoungCabal(op): 11:21pm On Oct 15, 2023
Every time I have talked to a Nigerian programmer like me on building software as a service platform for the Nigerian market, the answer I always get is a negative one.

A times, I wonder what the problem is, it's not like we don't want to build or lack the knowledge to build, the problem lies with the users/customers who would rather not pay no matter how cheap or useful the app is, I mean what's there in paying N1,000 per month to use a software, it's not that expensive, these days, even road side food you could finish in minutes could cost you more, what then is stopping Nigerians from patronizing home grown subscription based apps ?

Every time you launch a utility app with a fee, all you hear is, "the app is nice, but make it free", how can it be free when I use my money to pay for servers to store data and spend my time to maintain it ? Why are Nigerians so unreasonable, are we too poor or just too stingy ?

Earning 1 million naira in Nigeria monthly as a software developer or relocate to Canada Which one is better?
You've already made up your mind, why are you coming here to ask us ?

You have seen folks posting pictures of themselves in front of highrise buildings and restaurants abroad and you want to do the same and feel among. I don't have any advice for you.

I need a laravel expert that can implement (kinda complex task to a script)

The work is related to Referral and Bonus implementations but very complex.

Post the full details of whatever you need with your budget here. The degree of complexity doesn't matter or don't you get tired of explaining over and over again to each person that contacts you ?
ProgrammingRe: How Do You Handle Authentication In Your Projects? What's The Industry Standard? by YoungCabal: 5:59am On Oct 01, 2023
Devdevdev:
Hi guys. I am really interested in getting your opinions on this issue.

For user authentication I usually send a jwt token stored in a http-only cookie to my frontend. I handle authorization by verifying the token on every request to a protected api endpoint.

How efficient and secure is this?

What is the industry, real-world standard and how do you handle yours?

What would you recommend?
User visits /login, on the backend, you authenticate using bcrypt or whatever algorithm and generate a token which you must send back as response.

On the frontend, you read the response and store the token in httpOnly cookie named XSRF-TOKEN, axios and some other http libraries will automatically pass it for you on each request.

Why store it in httpOnly cookie and not web storage ? Because if you store it in web storage, anyone can read it, using httpOnly cookie makes it impossible for anyone else to read the token except you, the server who sets it.

I have tried my hand on freelancing but the pay here is too low. SaaS on the other hand seems to require money to make.

Boss, I sell MacBook you can patronize me when you’re ready .
It’s best you go with gaming laptop and just Linux as your operating system .
But the biggest factor you should consider is the GPU, cPU , AND SSD if you want to buy macbook
the issue is that xcode can't be used on any other platform.

You be big boy oooo!!! If you're waiting, you just gonna wait forever because if Apple release M3 dey gonna release M4 after that M5 after that M6 and on and on like that
I know but in this case, the M3 might come with better support for things like docker, some people are complaining of segmentation fault with the M2 currently

I need a new laptop and it has to be a macbook pro though I'm a big fan of linux I can't go for dell or lenovo this time because it won't work with Xcode. I heard the M3 will be faster and better than the M2 but how long will it take before they ship ? Should I wait ?

Bugs are the only reason software development takes so much time. Without bugs , it will be a walk in the park. It can take 5mins to write a code to do something .But once you encounter a bug, forget it, you can no longer guarantee how long it’s going to take and I don’t like this. It makes me wanna cry.
Bugs don't just manifest, if you encounter bugs in your code, it is as a result of your wrong doings. Stop complaining and fix up or go and learn farming

He's a lucky guy that's all.

He was lucky enough to build Nairaland forum when very few people in Nigeria knew what the internet was.

He was lucky to be a pioneer... unfortunately he's not a visionary or someone who can make something great.

For almost 20 years now Nairaland have been stagnant... same progress from say 10 years ago... no major improvements or change, anyone can scrape every inch of data on Nairaland... anyone can create millions of accounts here, anyone can build a bot to spam everywhere... Nairaland is lucky not enough companies are interested in forum style business ... if not it would have been dead and buried long ago.
Lol! Just a lucky guy ? Nah! I will say a lucky genius. There were competing forums that died in the early days of nairaland. It might shock you to know, nairaland was loved back then so much, you see this design some of us hate ? People worshipped it and sang praises for it. All the other forums only worked on PC and lacked the features nairaland had back then, nairaland was the home of innovation, it had likes, followings and followers and worked well on mobile browsers.

Even mark zuckerberg success was based on luck but we can't say he was just lucky

Is Nairaland not basic or not?

Most of the algorithms Nairaland uses was shipped default in this script.

Nairaland at its core is just a script even you can access and replicate.

Most of the custom algorithms where created by Seun with his mediocre PHP and Python
Lol! Have you seen smf source code before ? I don't mean the current version, go and check version 1.x.x and see the logic and sql queries, so many builtin language function were lacking in php and mysql and had to be built by smf developers, you had to be really good to understand it, talk more of rewriting it in another language, it wasn't beans. As at that year, if we were to be honest, Seun was a genius. We just have to give him the credits. He just got lazy and refused to upgrade, that's the only valid reason to roast him.

Anti spam bot that just check for duplicate comments or post on specific time intervals and ban.

Some basic algorithm grin

Very dull bot
Hahaha ! Content moderation isn't easy to implement algorithmically even with machine learning. Hope you know that facebook and twitter and most of these social networking sites using AI employ hundreds of human moderators on the side to contain spam grin

If Nairaland was a car it will be a 1920 model
You seem to underestimate nairaland a lot, nairaland has an antispam bot and also uses an algorithm to sort post on the trending page and other sections of the forum, ads on nairaland are also served and billed using an algorithm.

Does anyone has any ideas how the nairaland algorithms work especially as regards getting views for a post?

Please be kind to share. Thanks a bunch.
Though, Nairaland frontpage is moderated by admins not by an algorithm, your post doesn't really need to be on the frontpage to get seen. One of the few ways to get more views is to appear on the list of trending topics and hot topics in sections of the forum. Nairaland uses the time a post was created, the views and replies a post gets to sort this.

If you are interested in seeing how nairaland works under the hood, I built a nairaland clone script earlier this year using laravel php framework and I was giving it out, check my threads you should see it

ProgrammingRe: Can I Launch A Mobile Wallet App Without CBN License by YoungCabal: 2:32pm On Jul 18, 2023
airsaylongcome:
Looool....I personally think finance business is very good lucrative business. You never make a loss because you always charge for your services rendered. You just need a critical mass of users so that the total.charge exceeds your infrastructure and wages cost. And with good Treasury/Money management it can be super profitable. But the temptation is there to steal people's monies in your custody. Well steal.is not the word. Misappropriate more like. But from misappropriation without being caught, it ultimately ends in stealing. I've personally toyed with the idea of a Fintech startup but I've never understand the space and my liver dey fail me sometimes.
I'm not saying finance business is not good, you are not allowed to run financial services without a licence same way you can't just wake up one morning and rent a shop in your neighbourhood and turn it into a bank.

On the issue of profit, it depends on the transaction volume not really the number of users. You can have 10,000 users and still may not make any reasonable profit at the end of the month if they don't perform enough transactions, some of these fintech companies are just running on vibes, they don't make a reasonable profit yet.

To be honest, I don't advice any young talented person to be solely responsible for anything monetary in this age filled with peer pressure to outdo one's self, you can easily get tempted to borrow from it even if you didn't have any bad intention initially.
ProgrammingRe: Can I Launch A Mobile Wallet App Without CBN License by YoungCabal: 7:28pm On Jul 17, 2023
Two things are involved:
1. You launch and wait for CBN to come for you
2. You don't launch until you get a licence

Whether CBN will come for you or not will depend on what major services you are providing and when they notice your activities.

NOTE:
1. you can't hold people's funds for saving on their behalf without a licence.
2. if you are planning to collect money on people's behalf without them directly selling any service on your platform, you'll also need a licence

ADVICE:
Money can be very tempting to keep, you might get tempted to divert people's money for personal use or investments purposes and regret it. Even banks and fintechs are audited occassionally to make sure nobody is diverting anyone's money for personal use. Stay away from anything that will involve EFCC for your own good, find something else to do

Hahaha ! The funny part is that, out of all the Nigerian hosts, Whogohost is the most expensive. Try namecheap or bluehost if you want peace of mind.

Another angle, try accessing the site using a VPN

How can I be finding Syntax sexy angry

I'd love to be in the Tech ecosystem but as the one directing others (the programmers and geeks).

Just one good idea away from realizing this... I believe I've learnt enough programming to not look stupid when reviewing my employees final products or something.

I can't imagine myself sitting on the desk in front of monitor all day long typing syntax up and down and looking for next framework to jump into and start reading documentations.

Seems I'm more of JackMa, Steve Jobs kinda guy.
