A NIGERIAN Scientist, Ejikeme P. Nwosu, 29-year-old, may have developed a process for producing flammable gases from urine.

Nwosu, a graduate of Pure and Industrial Chemistry from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (NAU), Anambra State with Masters of Science degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, claims this process could replace fossil fuel in the near future.

Nwosu told The Guardian, "after years of study, I have successfully developed a process that converts urine into flammable gases. These gases can be used as an alternative to fossil fuel. This process is cheap, easy and very feasible. It requires treating urine with some substances I identified after years of study.

"No external heat is required for this process. The flammable gas is rich in hydrogen and ammonia. Both can be used directly to generate energy or could be further purified upon chemical treatments to get hydrogen of very high purity. Hydrogen is the best fuel for engines because it poses no threat to the environment, it produces water vapour as by product."

Scientists from Ohio University, United States, were one of the first, in July 2009, to describe the possibility of developing urine-powered cars, homes and personal electronic devices in the Royal Society of Chemistry's Chemistry Communications.

Also, the BBC reported on August 19, 2010, of a research team at Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom, investigating whether urine could be used as a source of renewable energy.

Nwosu, who says he is the chief executive officer (CEO) and director of Research at Lumos Laboratories and Company Nigeria, Kaduna, further explained, "it is obvious that our crude oil reserves will be exhausted in few decades to come. When this happens we will be forced to use other sources of fuel, but it would be more prudent to start acting prior to such state. Besides these, fossil fuel has a lot of dangers that come with it; chief among them is climatic disorders.

"In order to leave our world better than I met it, I ventured into research on urine and have made some notable successes that can change the world forever."

Nwosu said the United States government alone has invested billions of dollars into projects that can produce hydrogen from various sources and it is high time the Nigerian government acted on this.

"Trillions of litres of urine are generated yearly globally with an average adult producing about 2.5 litres daily," he said.

The industrial chemist said contrary to people's view of urine as a waste, he sees urine as the solution to our highly sought clean, renewable and affordable energy.

"Very soon, urine will be for sale. You are welcome to our laboratory anytime for demo, while coming do so with a bottle or bottles of urine and watch me change it to fire," Nwosu said.

In a report published 2009 in Discovery News, the Ohio University scientists said they could create large amounts of cheap hydrogen from urine that could be burned or used in fuel cells, using a nickel-based electrode. "One cow can provide enough energy to supply hot water for 19 houses," said Gerardine Botte, a professor at Ohio University developing the technology. "Soldiers in the field could carry their own fuel."

ABEOKUTA – Ogun State Police Command has uncovered a shrine which allegedly belongs to ritualists and fraudsters in Ewualase Village, Ogijo, behind NNPC Mosinmi depot, in Sagamu Local Government Area of the state.

The new Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Ikemefunna Okoye, who conducted newsmen and his men round the shrine for on the-spot assessment yesterday said the discovery was made on Monday.

According him, the Ogijo Divisional Headquarters through high level intelligence gathering learnt about the shrine, the operations of the suspected ritualists and went into action.

He said: "I gave them directives and they swung action that eventually led to the arrest of two people at the shrine. For now all we can say is that they are using this place for either rituals or to defraud people or both".

Okoye assured that the Command would do thorough investigations on the activities of the suspects, adding that the two suspects arrested would be charged to court after completion of the investigations.

In a related development, the Command yesterday arrested an armed robber as well as recovered a snatched vehicle.

Security operatives in Kogi State today discovered a bomb factory suspected to belong to members of the radical sect Boko Haram, agencies reported today.

Unexploded Improvised Explosive Devices, five hand grenades and other bomb-making component were discovered in factory, an uncompleted four-bedroom building in Kabba in central Kogi state.

According to reports, the team of State Security Service agents, police officers and soldiers had raided the building at about 2p.m., following up on intelligence reports gathered during prior investigations.

An anti-bomb squad was on hand to safely recover the explosives and other components, such as NPK fertiliser and other chemicals used in IEDs, as well as cable wires, a transistor radio and other tech devices.

Mr. Cletus Nzeji, the Commander for the anti-bomb squad said the recovered items would be taken into evidence and further analysed.

He confirmed that the explosives recovered had been of a high calibre with the capacity to do major damage.

Nzeji assured that while no arrests have been made, investigations were ongoing to ascertain if the weapons belonged to robbers of members of the Boko Haram sect.

Last week, two members of the sect died in Kaduna state when military agents raided a bomb factory in the city.

Nzeji promised that the owners of the building in Kogi would be found out and the building will be demolished.

A 29-year-old Mathematics and Social Studies graduate of a college of education, Mr. Seun Oyeleke, has been caught pants down with a seven-year-old female pupil in a school toilet.

Oyeleke teaches at a private nursery and primary school on Church Street, Osogbo, Osun State.

One of the pupils' mother, Mrs. A Ajiboye, had been informed by her son, who attends Oyeleke's tutorials with her five-year-old sister, that the teacher was fond of taking the girl out of the classroom to an unknown destination.

"I told my brother, who is a policeman, and he urged me to be patient. My brother then devised a plan with which we caught the teacher," she said.

Ajiboye told her son that whenever the teacher took her sister out, he should run home and inform her immediately.

But on Saturday, Oyeleke took another girl to the toilet on the school premises and the boy quickly dashed home to inform her mother.

The mother rushed to the school, where he found the teacher on a seven-year-old inside the toilet.

Narrating the incident to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, Ajiboye said, "When my children were leaving for the tutorials on Saturday morning, I told my son to rush back home whenever the teacher takes any girl to the toilet.

"At about 11:30am, my son rushed in to inform me that he had taken another girl out, I quickly rushed to the school, went to the toilet and forced the door open, I met him on top of the little child.

"I was very furious and I began to shout and wail. I called on neighbours to come and see what was happening. He was subsequently taken to Dugbe Police Station in Osogbo."

"He took me to the bathroom in the building and removed my pant and lay on me and later asked me to wear my pant back and return to the class," the little girl said.

At the police station, the teacher pleaded, "Please, spare me; I didn't know what came over me. The effect of what I did just dawned on me. I did not rape them. I only had sex with them. It's the devil's work."

Twenty-seven years after he toppled the administration of General Muhammadu Buhari, former military president General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has explained why his administration took over Radio Nigeria, Kaduna, immediately after the 1985 coup.

Babangida, who took over from Major-General Buhari on August 27, 1985, on the grounds that the Buhari-led government was too rigid and uncompromising in its attitude to issues of national significance, told participants at a public lecture organised by Radio Nigeria, Kaduna that he and other military officers had to take over the radio station because everybody wanted to listen to it whenever there was a problem

He said "We were there very close to you as your drivers, but when we staged a coup, we didn't waste time in taking over your radio station. But we still remain friends, you still remain true to your profession, and when there is a problem, everybody wanted to listen to your organisation because it says it all most of the time."

"Fourty- eight years ago, there was somebody called Lt Babangida. I got posted to this very town and I was living just next door, not very far away from the FRCN, in a place called Kanta Road.

"I must say that, that was the beginning of the turning point in my life and in my career because, during the course of my stay there, I mingled, I came across, interacted with some of the best species of human talent that we have in this country.

"Everybody who came here either in one position or the other --- George Bako, Sani Katsina and even the younger ones at that time we all interacted very closely. We interacted very closely at the most pressing period in the life of this country.

"And then after the civil war, we began to get into little politics here and there. But your organisation remains steadfast and produced some of the best reporting, analysis that everybody wanted to hear.

"We had a very powerful radio station during the war; for example, the Voice of Biafra , but your organisation succeeded very well in dwarfing the Voice of Biafra.

"Everybody wanted to listen to you and I think this should not be lost in history. You have made a tremendous contribution to the unity of this country; you have made a tremendous contribution in keeping this geographical area as one entity which, at the end of the day, also helped in uniting the cause of this country."

The former military president further praised the radio for its steadfastness, saying that its contributions during and after the civil war between 1967 and 1970 were worthy of note.

IBB said: "I think you also did wonderfully well when the regime of Gen. Yakubu Gowon introduced the 3 R's , that is, Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement. Everybody wanted to listen to you.

I want to commend you, to congratulate you on your services, not to yourself, but to this great country of ours and I do pray that you will continue to train the younger generations who are behind you to maintain the professional ethics which you have established during the course of your services in various capacities. I will have a story to tell you one day."

(AFP) A British and an Italian hostage killed on Thursday were murdered by "their Boko Haram captors" and those responsible have been arrested, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said in a statement.

Jonathan "condemned the killing of two kidnapped foreigners — an Italian and a British citizen — in Sokoto state Thursday by their Boko Haram captors before they could be rescued by a joint security raid on the kidnappers' hideout," a statement from his office said.

The statement added: "The president, who particularly commended the cooperation and understanding of the British and Italian governments, assured that the perpetrators of the murderous act, who have all been arrested, would be made to face the full wrath of the law."

The men were kidnapped by heavily armed men who stormed their apartment in the city of Birnin Kebbi, capital of Kebbi state in northwest Nigeria, near the Niger border

Gunmen have killed the Comptroller of the Nigerian Customs Service in charge of Yobe and Borno states, Alhaji Adamu Ahmadu, in his house located at Jaji ward, along Federal Government Girls' College, Potiskum in Yobe State.

Daily Trust learnt that the comptroller, who was recently transferred to Yobe from Bauchi State, was trailed to his house by about six gunmen at about 7p.m. and shot him while he was discussing with his family. A resident said the gunmen shot sporadically into the air before they got access to the house where they shot him along with his security guard and fled.

"I was outside my house when we heard the gunshots and we scampered into our houses for safety. When I called his son to find out what happened, he was crying and he said that Baba was killed," the resident said. Yobe State Police Commissioner, Lawal Tanko, confirmed killing, saying the deceased was trailed by the gunmen and shot in his family house.

"Six gunmen suspected to be hired assassins stormed his residential house at Jaji Ward, we learnt that he was shot dead. By tomorrow morning, I will personally lead the investigation team to Potiskum. We are all out to fish out the perpetrators," he said

Tanko said that his team will intensify security to deal with the "criminals terrorizing Potiskum."

At least 42 murder cases were recorded in Lagos between January and February this year. Summary of the crime statistics and achievements recorded in the months under review showed that Lagos State Police Command arrested 85 suspected armed robbers and also killed 14 purported bandits.

The police record showed that only one policeman was killed while 33 arms, 195 ammunition and 107 vehicles were recovered within the period. 163 vehicles were also stolen in the metropolis. 64 vehicles were said to have been snatched, 91 vehicles were removed from where they were parked while eight others were driven away by the drivers employed to drive the vehicles.

The police record also showed that only 11 armed robbery incidents were recorded. The statistics showed that 23 murder cases were reported in January while 19 were reported in February.

Sixty armed robbers were arrested in January while 25 others were arrested in February. Police allegedly gunned down five suspected armed robbers in January while nine were killed the next month.

Police recovered 22 arms, 165 ammunition and 71 vehicles in January with 11 arms, 30 ammunition and 36 vehicles recovered the following month.

Eight armed robbery incidents were recorded in January against three in February. Only one policeman was killed by armed robbers in February and non in January.

We gathered that 28 vehicles were snatched in January as against 36 the next month. 31 vehicles were removed from where they were parked in January against 60 the following month. Drivers employed to drive vehicles drove away four in each month under review.

FIFTY-Six South Africans were barred last night from entering Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Twenty-eight were stopped on Sunday – in retaliation for the deportation of 125 Nigerians last Friday – as reported exclusively yesterday by The Nation.

The government may also review the status of all South Africans living in this country to ascertain the validity of their visas and work permit.

Besides, security agencies have been placed on the alert to monitor the activities of South Africans.

According to sources, the Federal Government decided to bar the 56 South Africans who flew in aboard a South Africa Airways flight SA060 last night from entering because despite the measures so far taken by Nigeria, the South African government has not shown any remorse.

A source said: "It is sad that South Africa is behaving as if it acted right in deporting 125 Nigerian passengers last Friday.

"We will also push them to the wall, until they apologise to the Nigeria." "We are prepared for the worst," the source added.

Nigeria has given five conditions to South Africa to end the diplomatic row between the two countries.

South Africa is yet to respond to the conditions, The we learnt yesterday.

Foreign Affairs Minister Olugbenga Ashiru was at the Villa last night for a "crucial meeting" with President Goodluck Jonathan, apparently over the face-off.

According to sources, the five conditions are:

unconditional apology to Nigeria over the deportation of 125 Nigerian travellers last Friday from the Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg;
compensation for all the victims of the harsh treatment;
disciplinary action against all the officials involved in the cruelty to Nigerians;
a review of the Yellow Fever Vaccination Card policy; and
a commitment that such a diplomatic slip will not re-occur.
A top government source said: "We have given all these conditions to South Africa to restore normal diplomatic and bilateral relationship with it. We believe that the action was deliberately targeted at Nigerians.

"We have made our position known to the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Kingsley Mambolo.

"Without an apology and a review of the policy on Yellow Fever Vaccination Card, among others, we are ready to retaliate in whatever way to prove a point that our sovereignty can no longer be taken for granted."

Asked if South Africa has responded to Nigeria's demands, the source, who pleaded not to be named because of the "sensitivity" of the matter, added: "Not yet; we are still waiting for them.

"I think they are also consulting in their country, but we are ready for the worst."

Amb. Ashiru was at the Villa for a "crucial meeting" with President Goodluck Jonathan on the row, it was gathered.

"I think the Villa meeting will be for situation status review," another source said.

Unknown to many, there has been a "cold war" between Nigeria and South Africa in the last one year over the Libyan crisis, which led to the ouster of the late Muammar Gaddafi.

Nigeria supported the then rebel-controlled Transitional National Council (TNC). South African President Jacob Zuma backed the late Gaddafi.

The source added: "In the last one year, there has been a cold war between Nigeria and South Africa, beginning with the Libyan crisis. At the time the world was against Gaddafi, Zuma openly identified with the late dictator. He bulldozed his way to head a committee of the AU on Libyan crisis but the report presented to African leaders was wishy-washy and biased.

"Nigeria succeeded in persuading most of the AU states to recognise the TNC. Nigeria's position was also adopted by the UN.

"South Africa has not forgiven Nigeria for making it to 'lose out' in international politics. It was a major foreign policy setback for President Zuma, who is gradually being isolated by world leaders for opposing reforms in Libya.

"Also, Zuma wanted one of his wives to become the President of the AU Commission at the last session in Addis Ababa, but the election was stalemated. His wife could not win at the first ballot and this has angered South Africa, which believes that Nigeria wielded enormous power.

"You can now appreciate why the South African government is being harsh on Nigerian travellers."

Ashiru confirmed the government's position when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs yesterday.

He said: "No nation should take our brotherliness, maturity and friendly business environment whereby companies, including South African countries, are making more profits from Nigeria than in South Africa for granted."

The Minister said the government was determined to maintain the dignity of Nigerians everywhere, adding: "When a Nigerian is deported on flimsy excuses, there will be appropriate reaction. It may not be retaliation but it will be reciprocal, one way or the other.

"Let it be known that South African officials do not have monopoly of deportation of travellers. Henceforth, any deportation of Nigerians will be met with equal measure of reciprocal measure; we will not let it go unreciprocated.

"It will be measure for measure; we will not let it go unreciprocated. The signal must go out not just to South Africa but to the rest of the world that when you treat Nigerians with disrespect, we also will find a way of treating your nationals with disrespect. No country has a monopoly of treating Nigerians with disrespect; we too can hit back."

The Minister said relationships between the two countries at leadership level are cordial, but expressed regret that it did not trickle down the ladder to South African institutions.

"It is unfortunate that those fueling discord and hatred are two major institutions of the state - the police and the immigration," Ashiru said, adding:

"Immigration officials are always unfriendly to Nigerians while the police would arrest Nigerians indiscriminately without genuine reasons."

To buttress the dislike for Nigerians by South Africans, Ashiru said the process of deportation was against international conventions. "It was a shock and I find it difficult to accept that the deportation was on the basis of yellow fever card. Normally, the visa would not have been issued without the yellow fever card.

"Even in the event that the traveller was without the card, normal convention demands that such a person is quarantined and innoculated and allowed to enter after about three hours, if there is no adverse reaction.

"In this case, there was nothing like that. I was not informed of the incident before the deportation and neither was any official from our High Commission informed. Our officials were supposed to witness the deportation process as demanded by protocols."

Nigerian officials who are meeting with their South African counterparts have been instructed to demand an apology as well as punishment for those involved in the deportation.

But Ashiru stressed that the incident was not premeditated by Nigeria's support for the TNC of Libya.

The Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Nnenna Ukeje, who said the deportation was an embarrassment to Nigeria, asked Ashiru to update the committee on what led to the deportation and the level of the ministry's intervention.

Ukeje said: "This is an affront on Nigeria's brotherliness and by that act, South Africa has overstepped its boundary. It is our opinion that the time has come to review, as a matter of policy, how Nigerians are treated by other countries.

"We have all kinds of foreign companies in Nigeria that enjoy concessions, like Multichoice, MTN and a host of others, and of course there have been arguments about Nigerian companies trying to open up in South Africa having serious problems.

"So, I do not think this is an isolated issue. We have to look beyond the brotherly relationships and actually start to look at what is happening to our people in the hands South African institutions."

Another member, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, who cited the xenophobic attacks of 2008 and 2009 where Nigerians suffered more than other African nationals in South Africa, said Nigeria should begin to employ the principle of reciprocity when dealing with other countries.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also appeared before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee where he reiterated what he said at the House of Reps.

The minister said it would be premature to list retaliatory measures being planned against South Africa, but noted that one of such actions was the deportation of 28 South Africans on Monday.

Fawehinmi also asked Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court, Lagos for a leave to apply for an order of mandamus compelling the arrest of former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the State Security Service and the Defence Intelligence Agency are among agencies whose heads were sued by Fawehinmi.

Others are the Inspector-General of Police; Head, Special Anti-bomb squad of the Nigerian Police, the National Security Adviser; and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Twenty-eight South Africans were denied entry into Lagos – a tit for tat that has deepened the row between the two countries.

South Africa last Friday deported 125 Nigerians from the Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg after denying them entry into the country for allegedly possessing fake yellow fever certificates. The Federal Government frowned at the action.

The 28 passengers flew into the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos aboard a South African Airways flight at about 9.30pm.

They were expected to be deported last night or this morning.

THE political dichotomy between the North and South appears to be festering quietly ahead of 2015.

Going by the communiqué issued after a meeting of northern stakeholders in Asokoro, Abuja, two weeks ago, it is clear that all is not well with the unfinished national question.

That meeting was a reaction to series of meetings by stakeholders from the South-South-Southwest and even Southeast on the grave security situation in the country, which Southern leaders suspect to be the realisation of alleged threats by a section of the North to make the country ungovernable for the Jonathan Presidency.

While President Jonathan's men were still weighing the effects of this politicking from various geopolitical zones, the chairman of the Northern Governors' Forum and governor of Niger State, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, upped the ante, by joining calls for the restructuring of the country.

He used the opportunity of inauguration of a Foundation for the late Ahmadu Bello to attack Nigeria's revenue allocation formula, which he said was skewed in favour of the Niger Delta.

Russian and Ukrainian intelligence services have foiled terrorist plans to assassinate Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, according to Russia's Channel One. Russia's most-wanted terrorist is thought to be behind the plot.

­Russia's Channel One said on Monday the internationally-wanted criminals detained in Ukrainian city of Odessa confessed they had intended to assassinate Putin. The attack was supposed to be carried out in Moscow right after the presidential elections of March 4.

One of the detained revealed they had flown into Ukraine from the United Arab Emirates via Turkey. His accomplice has been killed in an explosion in the apartment they rented, where investigators later found explosives.

They got all the instructions from Russia's most-wanted terrorist Doku Umarov. According to the detained, they were instructed to carry out a number of attacks in Moscow and to plan a further attack on Putin.

The detained also informed about another group participant, Adam Osmaevб who was later arrested in Ukraine. The suspect is now cooperating with investigators in fear of possible extradition to Russia.
