Foreign Affairs / US Establishes Drone Base In Niger, Targets Regional Militia by youngies(m): 7:41am On Jan 30, 2013
The United States of America is planning to establish a drone base in Niger, a country sandwiched between Nigeria and Mali, two nations that have been under attack from Islamic militants.

The drone base, according to a report in last Sunday’s edition of the New York Times, will give the US military command increased unmanned surveillance missions on the activities of Boko Haram and other extremist groups in West Africa that are affiliated to Al Qaeda and other sectarian groups.

With the establishment of the drone base, the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), which has proved successful in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the goal is to limit risks involved with the use of humans and as well improve intelligence gathering around the desert belt connecting North and West African.
The report of the planned establishment of the drone base in Niger came on the heels of international efforts to rout out Islamic insurgents from Mali.

Nigeria, which is part of the international military coalition in Mali, has so far expended $32 million on its military expedition in the Sahelian nation, just as it has so far deployed 776 troops in the war-torn country.

Politics / MEND Denies Plot To Break Up Nigeria by youngies(m): 7:34am On Jan 30, 2013
HE Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has dissociated itself from purported plans to disintegrate Nigeria into North and South.

The Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) has implored ex-militants to be circumspect in their comments to avoid unnecessarily heating up the Niger Delta and the country at large.

MEND spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, yesterday urged Nigerians to disregard the pathetic attempt at propaganda by one Comrade Azizi that MEND is to start actions aimed at disintegrating Nigeria following the conviction of Henry Okah by a South African court for his involvement in the Independence Day bombing in Abuja.

“The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) would like to clarify the following: Mr. Henry Okah is NOT and has never been viewed as the leader or founder of MEND but rather known as a sympathiser and supporter of our cause. Our fighters are freedom-fighters who are agitating for justice, the emancipation of the Niger Delta and control of our God-given resources and not assassins as stated by this so-called Comrade Azizi,” said Gbomo.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Office, Kingsley Kuku, has called on leaders of former militants to avoid making comments that could heat up the country.

In a statement issued by his office yesterday, Kuku said the appeal became necessary in the light of recent developments involving some of the top leaders of the former agitators in the Niger Delta.

He said the Amnesty Office viewed with serious concern comments credited to some of them as reported in the media in recent weeks.

The statement also clarified that the approved stipends for the former agitators are paid into their bank accounts at the end of every month and not through any of their former leaders.

Politics / Witches, Demons Hindering Electricity Reform – Prof. Nebo by youngies(m): 6:00am On Jan 24, 2013
The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the nominations of Prof. Chinedu Nebo and Kabiru Taminu Turaki as ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria after subjecting them to a screening session of questions and answers.

Both nominees in their separate sessions on the floor of the Senate, spoke on issues bordering on security, power, education and politics.

Nebo from Enugu State, who was former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, while speaking on the challenges in the power sector, said “uninterrupted power supply is not a mirage.”

He noted that with the unbundling of the Power Holding Company, there were a lot of opportunities for improvements in the power sector.

Nebo said, “Looking at what Nigeria is trying to do, we are planning to generate 40,000 megawatts by 2020, but when you look at the capacity of Nigeria to absorb electricity, that will not be enough.”

He said there was the need for more IPPs to be involved, arguing that with increased opportunities, even those who lost out in the bidding process of the sale of PHCN, could start their own infrastructure in participating in power generation, transmission and distribution.

On dealing with alleged ‘mafia’ group in the power sector, Nebo noted that God would empower him to chase out the mafia, which he termed “demons and witches.”

He said, “Some highly placed Nigerians believe that when there is outage, it is caused by witches and demons.

“If the President deploys me in the power sector, I believe that given my performance at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, where I drove out the witches and demons, God will also give me the power to drive out the demons in the power sector.”

He lamented that while South Africa generates 40,000 megawatts for its 40million population, Nigeria is still battling with 4,000 megawatts for about 170 million of her people.

Turaki on his part, called for the training of the military deployed for assignments in terrorists prone areas of the country to enable them to relate well with civil authorities.

He said the problem of insecurity could be tackled through a close collaboration between the agencies, while shunning inter agency rivalry.

He expressed support for the deployment of troops to Mali, saying that the funding and training for insurgents in the country are located in Mali.

“Nigeria should attack the base of the terrorists in Mali, because only Niger stands between Nigeria and Mali. If we don’t join other nations to fight the terrorists in Mali, they can find their way into Niger and then into Nigeria,” he said.

Speaking on the decay in the Police Force, Turaki noted that “the problems facing the Nigerian Police are so legendary. The decay had gone on for so long a time. It is easy to destroy, but rebuilding will take some more time.”

Politics / 79-year-old Woman Drags Redeemed Church To Court Over Noise Pollution by youngies(m): 12:34pm On Jan 22, 2013
An Ikeja High Court, Lagos, has urged the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Chapel of Victory, Ikeja, Lagos, to maintain “zero noise pollution” while conducting its religious programmes.

A 79-year-old neighbour, Mrs. Esther Ogunsalu, whose residence shares a common fence with the church located on 4, Sogunle Street, Abule Onigbagbo Estate, off Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos, had dragged the church before the court for disturbing her peace.

Ogunsalu, in the case with suit no LD/1336/2011 filed before Justice Aishat Opesanwo, said the noise emanating from the church prevents her from sleeping, adding that it also “triggers her hypertensive heart disease.”

She asked the court to declare that the continuous occupation and use of the premises as a place of worship “contravenes the building and town planning regulations of Lagos State.”

However, Opesanwo referred both parties to the Multi-Door Courthouse, Igbosere, Lagos, for mediation.

At the Multi-Door Courthouse, the parties adopted a term of settlement dated November 7, 2012 which was signed by the church’s pastor, Dapo Morawo, and Ogunsalu alongside her lawyer, Mr. Dan Kizito, in the presence of a mediator, identified as Mr. Dosunmu.

The terms of settlement obtained by our correspondent on Monday stated, “That in the interest of peace and justice, parties have agreed to make peace and that the first respondent (owner and trustees of the RCCG) and the second respondent (Morawo) will maintain a zero noise pollution in accordance with Lagos State regulations and laws.”

At the resumed hearing of the case, Justice Opesanwo said since the parties had agreed to an amicable resolution of the dispute, the court would adopt the terms of settlement as its judgment.

“The said terms of settlement have been duly examined. I hereby adopt and pronounce it as the judgment of this court. Parties are urged to bear their respective obligations under the settlement terms,” Opesanwo said.

Politics / Gov. Chime At London Hospital For ENT Condition by youngies(m): 6:48am On Jan 22, 2013
ENUGU State Governor Sullivan Chime Monday sought medical help at the world famous 9, Harley Street Clinic, London.

Chime was at the hospital at exactly 2.30 p.m. to see Prof. Paul O’ Flynn, a renowned specialist ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) surgeon.

Accompanied by a female aide, Chime was dropped off in front of the hospital seconds before his scheduled appointment with O’Flynn. Dressed in dark trousers and a pink stripped shirt, The Guardian watched from a distance of about 10 metres as Chime, who covered himself from the freezing cold with a long unbuttoned woolen coat and a grey woolen hat that covered his face, pressed the clinic’s buzzer to be let in.

“I’ll be out within a few minutes,” he told his chauffer who zoomed off in the direction of Oxford street.

Although The Guardian’s investigations showed that the professor of ENT should not normally consult with him for more than 15 to 30 minutes, Chime had not stepped out of the hospital of the rich and famous as of the time of filing this report (3.30 p.m. or 4.30 p.m. Nigerian time).

Chime had been away from the state since September 19, 2012. Since his departure, rumours have been strong that he had been down following an undisclosed illness.

The Guardian gathered that Chime had been discharged from Wellington Humane Hospital, Swiss Cottage, London, on November 21, last year, after successful surgeries that allegedly had to do with his respiratory organ.

He, however, returned to the hospital from a private apartment on January 11, this year as an out-patient for check-up.

Further details of his ailments could not be disclosed as experts attending to him said that doing so would “breach data protection law” as it applies in the United Kingdom (UK) which the governor is entitled to.

The source however disclosed that he would need further examination and monitoring to ascertain his level of response to treatment.

Although he had hurried out of the state following an alleged illness, officials of his administration had always denied the reports, explaining that the governor is “hale and hearty”, and only left to enjoy his “accumulated leave”.

They insisted that Chime, who came to power in 2007 had not gone on leave since then and had decided to observe one, having worked hard to improve the fortunes of the state.

Politics / FG Suspends Importation Of Private Jets by youngies(m): 6:10am On Jan 21, 2013
Nigerian billionaires planning to buy private jets have been stopped from doing so as the Federal Government has suspended the importation of private airplanes, helicopters and other lighter aircraft into the country.

Sources in the Ministry of Aviation said the suspension, which took effect a few months ago, would continue until the formulation of a new policy on importation of private jets and helicopters.

The sources revealed that the new policy, currently being drafted by the ministry, would take into cognisance several issues regarding the importation of private jets into the country.

Top government officials, however, said the Aviation ministry had yet to determine when work on the policy would be completed and, as such, there was no definite date for the removal of the suspension.

The Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Joe Obi, confirmed the development.

Obi, however, stressed that the suspension did not affect the importation of commercial and passenger jets being used by domestic airlines.

He said, “The domestic airlines are free to bring in their normal passenger planes. But the suspension only affects private jets. The government is trying to work on a new policy for the private jet.

“You will agree with me that the current policy on private jets is old, and there is a need to renew it. Pending that renewal, all applications for importation for now will have to hold on.”

Asked if there was a timeframe for the lifting of the suspension, Obi said, “There is no definite time for now. It depends on when the new policy is completed. Government is working on the policy. When it is completed, every body will be informed.”

It is unclear the new areas in the private jet business that the proposed policy will tackle as Obi declined further comments.

However, it was learnt that several applications for the importation of private jets, helicopters and other lighter aircraft had been piling up at the Aviation ministry for over four months now.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the development was already affecting not only some wealthy Nigerians, who had ordered for private jets, but also their appointed agents helping them to handle the purchase from foreign manufacturers.

“We have submitted applications to bring in some jets on behalf of some people for over four months now, but no approval yet. It is strange. Some of the aircraft are awaiting approval so that we can bring them in from the United States, France and South Africa,” an aviation expert and agent, who usually assists some wealthy Nigerians to acquire private jets, told our correspondent under condition of anonymity.

Politics / Obi Promises N5m For Information On Bodies In Ezu River by youngies(m): 8:28pm On Jan 20, 2013
The Anambra State governor, Peter Obi on Sunday promised to give N5 million to anyone with information on the bodies found in Ezu River, Amansea, Akwa North Local Government area of the state.

30 bodies were found at the old Enugu-Onitsha road axis of the River, situated at the boundary between Enugu and Anambra States.

The corpse that could not be easily identified were suspected to have been dumped in the river on Friday night by unknown persons.

Natives of Amansea said some of the bodies they saw had been swept away while some were still buried down the river and are expected to become afloat later.

Residents of the community are worried about the incident because the river is their main source of water.

The government is however promising to send tankers over to the community to supply water.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Bala Nasarawa, who shuddered at such inhuman and ugly incident, said investigation in to the matter will commence immediately while his Enugu counterpart, Musa Daura, maintained that Enugu and Anambra enjoy relative peace and so could not decipher where the corpses were coming from.

Mr Daura wondered how the avalanche of dead bodies got there because he had not heard of any communal clash whether in Enugu or Anambra where many people were killed.

Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Lawrence Ikeafor, also wondered where the dead bodies could be coming from as there are no communal clashes within the state or even in neighboring Enugu state.

He however advised the villagers not to fetch water from the river until the bodies are cleared and buried.

Politics / Buhari May Change His Mind On 2015 Election by youngies(m): 6:22am On Jan 17, 2013
Former Head of State and three time Presidential candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has said the ongoing merger talks by the major opposition political parties will determine if he will run for president in 2015.

Buhari said this in Abuja on Wednesday while fielding questions from reporters after inaugurating the Congress for Progressive Change Merger Committee.

The 18-member committee is saddled with the responsibility of having talks with the Action Congress of Nigeria on the proposed merger.

He explained that the CPC would first conclude discussions with the ACN after which talks would be initiated with the All Nigeria Peoples Party.

“We have written priority (with ACN) and we are going to go into discussion with ACN before we move to the other party,” the former Head of State told the journalists.

Buhari, however, assured, “It is not impossible that the new party is presented to the people of Nigeria by the middle of this year.”

The Katsina State-born general, who acknowledged the fact that he had said he would not run for the office of the President again, having failed to win the election three times, said he would wait for the outcome of the merger talks before giving a definite answer.

He said, “For the umpteenth time, I said it (that I won’t run again), it is on record that I would not present myself again for election.

“But after that, I have said so many times that members of my party and groups went and said that I don’t belong to myself and that I belong to them. They also said they belong to me.

“I asked them to go and organise the party and if you approach me I may consider it. This is the stage we are.

“I mentioned it several times and I’m waiting on my party and if we have a merger, it will make things much easier for me. The new party will then decide whether it will offer me its ticket and it is up to me to consider accepting it or rejecting it.”

While inaugurating the committee, which has a former Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Alhaji Garba Gadi, as its chairman, Buhari said personal interest should not stand in the way of a great opportunity to build a better Nigeria.

This, he said, would happen once the CPC, ACN and ANPP came together as one party.

He said, “The issue before you now and as you go into your negotiations is fundamentally one – that you will negotiate the best deal for Nigeria.

“It is essentially a matter of give-and-take. There is nothing sacrosanct about any of the issues you will be called to thrash out, but of course, there is a bottom line, the outlines of which have been given in the committee’s terms of reference.

“Your task is national. Petty personal interest should not stand in the way of a great opportunity to build and run a better Nigeria, which will happen once CPC, ACN and ANPP come together.”

Buhari told the committee not to take the negotiations as a battle, saying it was a friendly game with fellow brothers who he said, desire the nation for what people like him also desire for the country.

He said the country was at a crossroads, stumbling from one disaster to another “simply because its leaders lack purpose.”

The former Head of State regretted that the opposition had also not been able to get its act together because its leaders had refused to unite.

“In Nigeria today, therefore, unity – unity of people, unity of political parties, and unity of the opposition is no longer an option. It has become a national imperative,” he added.

Buhari said it was a great joy to know that the leaders of the two parties were eager to merge, adding that the sentiment in the country was for full merger and not alliance or electoral understanding or anything of sorts.

According to him, “What Nigerians want is merger and that is what you are going to negotiate and bring home to them.”

He said the work of the committee would be simple because there was already in existence, an unexecuted understanding between the CPC and ACN for the creation of a new party, with a brand new logo and a new flag already designed and all other paraphernalia of a political party put in place.

All these, according to him, should be dusted off and built upon to avoid time wasting.

The committee, he said, should be able to finish its job in six weeks before the two parties would now constitutionally seal the merger in another six weeks.

Buhari said the new party should actively support the restructuring of the country, adding its 36-state structure was not working.

Politics / 30% Of Children In Northern Nigeria Are Street Beggars – Don by youngies(m): 6:17am On Jan 15, 2013
Thirty per cent of children in the North are street beggars, the Dean of Post-Graduate School, Nigerian Defence Academy, Professor Adam Okene, has said.

Okene also stated that recent research showed that the North-west geo-political zone of the country accounts for 70% of the number of almajirai in the country, most of whom depend on street begging to survive.

Speaking as the chairman of a workshop on street begging in Niger state, organised by the Niger state Law Reform Commission, Okene called for synergy among state governors in the northern part of the country to eradicate the problem of alamajiri and street begging which he said has been accounting for the series of security breaches in this part of the country.

Okene explained that Malaysia and Thailand had worked the path the north is presently toeing but with diligence and political will the two countries had been able to surmount the problem.

He said that more emphasis must be placed on reforms in the North and the country as a whole, insisting that proper education of the citizenry and applicable education will solve the problems the country is presently facing.

While supporting the reform agenda of the Niger state government, Okene said “we need the reform because we have to solve the problems and challenges of the society”.

Delivering a paper titled “Street Begging, Causes and Remedies: An Islamic Perspective”, Dr Ibrahim Husam Imam, Head of Department of Languages, Nigeria Defence Academy, Kaduna, said that the problems of street begging cannot be resolved without the involvement of Qur’anic teachers who need assistance from government and non-governmental organisations to keep their discipline off the streets.

He stressed the need to set up a committee to train Islamic teachers on the management of almajirai while government should also pursue the integration of the Arabic and western education policy with more vigour

Politics / Excerpts From 'The Accidental Public Servant' El-Rufai's New Book by youngies(m): 5:30am On Jan 11, 2013
El-Rufai's New Book: Whoever Wins, I'll Run Aso Rock From My Farm - Obasanjo

After Olusegun Obasanjo failed to secure a third term in office, he boasted that 2007 and 2011 would be a “transition period”, as he would run the affairs of the country from his Ota Farm, irrespective of the fact that there would be a sitting president.

This has been revealed in a recently published memoir of an Obasanjo confidant and former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, entitled, “”.

The book recounts that though former president Obasanjo had singlehandedly ensured that the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua succeeded him in 2007, he nevertheless planned to administer the country from his Ota Farm. He described the 2007-2011 period as a transition because all his pointsmen, including the “economic team” would remain in office.

El-Rufai recalls the former president telling him thus: “Well, nothing will change, you know. I will be in Ota but we will be running things. Everything will remain the same, you know. You will remain in the government, the economic team will remain. Nothing will change. Only I will move to Ota and Yar’Adua will be here but we will be running things.”

When el-Rufai informed Obasanjo that he intended taking at least two years’ break from government business, the former president responded: “OK, well I just thought I should call you and explain to you that the next four years is just a transition period. The real change in government will happen in 2011. Not now.”

Obasanjo begged Atiku on his knees

El-Rufai also said in his seminal book, which will be launched at 10:30am on February 7, at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, that the former president begged his deputy on “bended knees,” for his political survival.

In the 627-page book, El-Rufai said on page 151, “The stakes were high enough for Obasanjo to swallow his considerable pride and go to Atiku on bended knees.

“Obasanjo had no problem going down on his knees to beg for what he thought was impossible to obtain any other way.”

This rare and calculated display of meekness came around 2003 when Obasanjo feared he could lose the People’s Democratic Party’s re-nomination bid, if he did not make peace with Atiku.

The book recounts that faced with the possibility of losing the PDP ticket to Atiku, who had rallied all the governors on the platform of the party, the former president paid his deputy an unscheduled visit in 2003.

“The political bricksmanship got so bad that Obasanjo had to visit Atiku’s residence unannounced to plead for Atiku’s support.

Upon arriving at his deputy’s residence, he reportedly knelt before Atiku and begged the vice-president to remain onside, thus guaranteeing the support of the 17 PDP governors. In return, Obasanjo had to agree to retain Atiku as his running mate (he was rumoured at the time to be considering an alternative),” the book revealed.

In his book, el-Rufai also queries the leadership recruitment processes, noting that it is at the root of the nation’s problems, as it sacrifices merit. He said that the choosing of the late Yar’Adua and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as president and vice-president by Obasanjo was “the final nail in the coffin of any meritocracy or track record of governance in Nigeria.

“President Obasanjo chose Umaru Yar’Adua whose ill-health, among other challenges, was known already constituted a serious impediment to the possibility of any inspired and energetic leadership. The view of many well-informed Nigerians is that Yar’Adua and his deputy, Goodluck Jonathan, emerged for no other discernable reasons than being ‘weak’ governors sympathetic to the ‘Third Term’ project and therefore handpicked as payback.

“The subsequent electoral imposition of Goodluck Jonathan as president in 2011 via military occupation and rigging has been unhelpful in raising leadership quality. Jonathan went into a presidential contest without a campaign manifesto, boasting of no experience, merit and any track record of previous performance other than wearing no shoes to school and his ‘good luck’.”

Politics / Inmates Sue Beer, Wine Companies, Claim Alcohol Led To Their Crimes by youngies(m): 8:33pm On Jan 04, 2013
Five inmates at the Idaho State Correctional Institution are suing national beer and wine companies for $1 billion, claiming that alcohol was responsible for their crimes, the Associated Press reports. The civil suit alleges that they were not sufficiently warned about alcohol's addictive properties.

The inmates, who do not yet have an attorney, drafted the litigation themselves.

Keith Allan Brown, who pleaded guilty in 2010 to voluntary manslaughter, filed the suit on Dec. 10, according to the Kansas City Star. The 52-year-old wrote that over the course of his life, he has spent almost 30 years in prison, and that alcohol has "played a major role" in most of the situations that landed him there.

“At no time in my life," the suit states, "prior to me becoming an alcoholic, was I ever informed that alcohol was habit forming and addictive.”

Brown's co-plaintiffs are Jeremy Joseph Brown, Cory Alan Baugh, Woodrow John Grant and Steven Todd Thompson as co-plaintiffs.

Jeremy Joseph Brown, 34, is serving a 20-30 year sentence for a 2001 shooting that left his victim seriously injured. In his affidavit, he claims he never would have started drinking had he known alcohol was habit-forming. He was drunk when the shooting occurred, his affidavit states, and if he had not been an alcoholic, it "never would have happened."

Baugh, also 34, and Thompson, 44, are both serving 3-7 years for grand theft and drug convictions, ABC news reports. Grant is serving up to 7 years for drug and aggravated battery convictions.

Grant wrote that he "fears the day" of his release, because he does not know if he will be able to "control the desires and craving to use alcohol."

The companies targeted by the lawsuit are Miller Brewing Company, Anheuser-Busch Co., Adolph Coors Co., Brown-Furman Co., American Brands Inc., Pepsi-Cola, RJR Nabisco, Gallo's Winery, Ernest Gallo and Julio Gallo. None of them have yet responded to the suit.

Boise attorney Joe Filicetti points out that despite the inmates' claims, the addictive properties of alcohol aren't exactly a secret.

"I think it's pretty common knowledge that it's addictive," he told KIVI. "It's well known to be something that causes you to reduce your inhibitions and to do things you otherwise wouldn't do."

Politics / Kogi Again! Speaker’s Convoy In Road Accident, Orderly Dies by youngies(m): 7:08am On Jan 04, 2013
Barely one week after the convoy of the governor of Kogi state was involved in a ghastly motor accident which claimed the life of the governor’s ADC, another tragedy struck yesterday when the convoy of the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Momoh Jimoh Lawal, was involved in an accident along Okene- Lokoja road.

The crash, which an eye witness attributed to reckless driving by an articulated truck, also claimed the life of a police constable attached to the Speaker.

We gathered that the Speaker was returning from Okene when a long truck knocked off his last back-up car in which Constable Akeem Lamidi and others were travelling. Lamidi was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja for treatment before he gave up the ghost.

While receiving treatment at the hospital, Lamidi, who hailed from Erin Ile in Oyun local government area of Kwara state, was quoted to have expressed gratitude to God for sparing him.

But he died at the Medical Centre yesterday.

It was gathered that before he died he was said to have shouted, “They have come! They have come!”

The Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Austin Akubo, who confirmed the death of the police escort yesterday, said the Speaker was unhurt.

He pointed out that it was not the Speaker’s car that was involved in the crash, but the one attached to the police escort.

He said: “The Speaker’s vehicle was not affected. He is hale and hearty.

“The Speaker, Alhaji Momoh Jimoh Lawal, was ready to take him to the best hospital in Nigeria for the best medication, but unfortunately he gave up the ghost this morning.”

The Osun State Government has announced a comprehensive plan for the state’s secondary school students to study Ifa as one of their subjects.

The state Governor, Ogbeni Raufu Aregbesola, said the schools’ computer tablet had application for Ifa studies.

Aregbesola made the relevation yesterday during the special prayers session to usher in the New Year, organized with clerics from all religions praying for the peace and growth of the state.

Clerics who offered special prayers for the state included the President General, League of Imams and Alfas in the South-West, Alhaji Mustapha Ajisafe; the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state, Evangelist Abraham Aladeseye; and frontline Ifa priest, Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon, among others.

The special prayer affected official functions in the state secretariat and other government offices, as top civil servants across all parastatal agencies graced the occasion held in the premises of the Bola Ige House, state secretariat, Abere, Osogbo.

Bishop of Osogbo Diocese of the Methodist Church, Bishop John Bamigboye, advised the government to compensate those whose property were demolished as a result of the ongoing road dualization in the state.

Bamigboye enjoined the government to return Christian and Islamic Religious Studies to all primary and secondary schools in the state.

Governor Aregbesola, in his remarks at the ceremony, declared that 2013 would be a year of total freedom for the state, stressing that the year would be for the people of the state a year of total turn-around and liberty.

According to the governor, the government’s major desire for the state in 2013 is to ensure the fulfillment of the desires of the state’s founding fathers, stressing: “Osun State will be freed in 2013 from hunger, mystery, poverty and under-development.”

He said his government has paid over N600 million as compensation to owners of demolished structures, even as he assured that those who were yet to receive their compensation would get theirs soon.

Aregbesola also disclosed that his government had returned religious studies to all public primary and secondary schools in the state, adding that the free computer tablet tagged ‘opon Imon’, which the government would present to secondary school students had an application for Ifa studies.

He also prayed for peace and development of the state in 2013 and urged all the people to support his government and the country with prayers, saying: “Nigeria needs prayers for an end to come to the security problem confronting the northern part of the country.”

Aregbesola added that his desire for the year was to make the state the envy of other states in the country, saying he had come to the state to do the works of God.

Politics / Reps Held Plenary For 107 Days In 2012, Spent 140 Days On Holiday by youngies(m): 9:10am On Jan 03, 2013
The House of Representatives held plenary sessions 107, spent a total of 140 days on holiday between January 1 and December 31 in 2012, Daily Trust investigations have shown.

Based on the provisions of section 63 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, the House is required to sit for at least 181 days in a year.

However, the constitution does not specify the way the House calendar should run and if committee sessions form part of the required sittings, as it only says: “The Senate and the House of Representatives shall each sit for a period of not less than one hundred and eighty-one days in a year.”

Our correspondent reports that although the two chambers of the National Assembly operate a legislative calendar that runs from June to June of the proceeding year, an analysis of the total number of sitting days by the House show the House sat for 107 days.

Under the House standing rules 2011, the lower legislative chamber only sits in plenary on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays while committees hold sessions throughout the week.

However, in 2012, the House held two special emergency sessions-the first was on Sunday January 8 during the fuel subsidy removal and on Friday, June 15- over the allegations of $620,000 bribery allegation levelled against former chairman of the House adhoc committee on Subsidy probe Rep Farouk Lawan.

Our correspondent reports that the two special sittings were the first in the recent democratic history of Nigeria.

During the period, House held plenary sessions as follows: January 10 days, February 13 days, March 12 days, April 9 days, May 14 days, June 10 days, and July 9 days. August was zero days because MPs proceeded on two months annual recess after concluding their first legislative year since inception and resumed on September 18th.

In same September, the House sat for 6 days, October, 9 days; November, 9 days while December was 6 days and they proceeded on Christmas and New Year break to resume on January 10.

Like the Senate, House also sits only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Also, last year, the legislators had two weeks Easter break in March and April and another two weeks break in March ending and early April for the Easter break and what they called “constituency outreach.”

There was one week break in early May for May Day public holiday and on May 24, the House adjourned plenary to May 30 to mark the 2012 Democracy Day.

Between June 6 and 19, MPs were on a 13-day break to mark the first anniversary of the seventh House but they cut short the break on Friday June 15 to debate the $620,000 subsidy probe bribery allegations.

From July 19 to September 18, the House went for its annual recess which lasted 62 days.

On October 18, the House again embarked on a 19-day Eid el-Kabir break and resumed plenary on November 6. Again, in early November, MPs adjourned plenary sittings for one week for over sights of ministries and departments on the implementation of the 2012 budget.

Crime / Expelled Student Rapes, Beheads Girl In Minna by youngies(m): 8:48am On Jan 03, 2013
A 500-level expelled student of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, David Ndako, has been arrested by the police for raping and chopping off the head of a lady while celebrating the New Year on Tuesday in Rafin Yashi area of Bosso town in Niger state.

We learnt that the girl, simply identified as Rahamat, was lured into the apartment by the man before he sexually abused her.

Ndako was said to have dragged the headless body of the girl to the toilet in the apartment before wrapping the bleeding head in a Bagco super bag which he carried on his way out of the compound.

However, it was learnt that the neighbours became suspicious of the killer boy, particularly when they noticed blood dripping from the bag.

They were said to have questioned him on the content of the bag and forced him to open it before discovering that he was carrying the severed head of his female visitor.

Our correspondent gathered that the neighbours raised alarm which attracted an angry mob that almost lynched the school drop-out before the community leader in the area rescued him and handed him over to the police.

The girl was said to be on a visit to his relative in Minna from Katsina state, but it could not be ascertained if they were in a relationship before the incident.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Niger state Police Command and Deputy Superintended of Police, Pius Edobor, confirmed the incident to us, saying that investigation was on to establish the identity of the murdered girl and the relationship between the boy and the deceased.

We learnt that the Ndako was expelled from FUT over six years ago in connection with cult-related activities.

Politics / Re: Should Oritsejafor Be Removed As CAN President?! by youngies(m): 9:36am On Dec 31, 2012
joseph1832: What is the function or job of the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria? (CAN) Well certainly its not be a sycophant

Judging by the way Ayo Oritsejafor, who is currently the president of CAN is using the office, one would say its a complete aberration.

He wines and dines with the corrupt, plays lip service to them, encourage them in their evil ways, turns the other eye when the people he's suppose to be protecting their interest are being harassed, doesn't blink an eye lid when hash conditions are sanctioned on the Nigerian masses, attends top government functions, and has endorse a government known to be very corrupt! In short there's no PDP function you don't find the clergyman. I often wonder if he's become a card carrying member of that party.

Is this what a man of God, the President of CAN is suppose to be doing? I think its time CAN clean out their closet.
How old are you? You need proper education.

Politics / Jigawa Governor's Son Arrested For Money Laundering At Kano Airport by youngies(m): 12:09pm On Dec 12, 2012
One of the sons of the Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, was arrested around 12 midnight at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport as he prepared to board an Egypt Air flight to Cairo.

Aminu Lamido was flagged after he declared $10,000 in his possession to agents of of the Nigerian customs at the airport. However further checks by agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the airport revealed that he was carrying a lot of money far higher than was disclosed.

Politics / LAPD Apologizes To Notorious B.i.g's Family by youngies(m): 11:07am On Dec 11, 2012
LOS ANGELES -- Police detectives apologized to the family of Notorious B.I.G. for failing to warn them about the planned release of his autopsy report more than 15 years after he died in a drive-by shooting, the Los Angeles Police Department said Saturday.

The detectives had intended to notify the rapper's family, but the report was released prematurely "due to an administrative error," the department said in a statement.

"Our detectives personally spoke with the Wallace family (Friday) night, and apologized for not notifying them prior to the release" said Capt. Billy Hayes, who heads LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division, which is investigating the killing. "Obviously this has been a challenging case for us to solve. We hope that witnesses or other people with information will come forward and give us the clues we need to solve this case."

Los Angeles County's Chief Coroner Investigator Craig Harvey said a security hold placed on the report's release was lifted last week. The 23-page report revealed the rapper, whose real name was Christopher Wallace, was hit by four bullets after leaving a music industry event in March 1997, but one that hit his heart, left lung and colon caused his death.

The attorney for the rapper's family complained Friday that he was not given any notice that the report would be released and criticized police for not closing one of Los Angeles' highest-profile unsolved murders.

Both Los Angeles police and the FBI investigated Wallace's killing, which came just months after another rap superstar, Tupac Shakur, was gunned down in Las Vegas. The FBI looked into whether any Los Angeles police officers were involved in Wallace's shooting.

The deaths of Wallace and Shakur have been the subject of rampant speculation about the motives. The one-time friends became rivals and instigators in an East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry during the mid-1990s.

A 2011 book by former Los Angeles police detective Greg Kading claimed both murders had been solved, although no arrests have been made and federal prosecutors in 2005 declined to file charges after a lengthy, bi-coastal investigation. Wallace is from the New York City borough of Brooklyn.

EFAB EXPLOSION UPDATE: “It Was A Mere Fire Outbreak” – Police
The Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday dismissed rumour of a bomb explosion at a shopping complex in Lokogoma, a settlement in the Federal Capital Territory.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Frank Mba, who dismissed the rumour during an interaction with newsmen in Abuja, described the unfortunate incident as false alarm.

Mba said that no case of bomb explosion was reported in or around the FCT, noting that investigations by security operatives had indicated that the incident was a mere fire outbreak.

“It is unfortunate that some people have gone to town to report that it was an explosion; it was a mere fire outbreak at a shopping complex in Lokogoma.

“Reports reaching us showed that the fire, triggered by an electrical fault, started from a laundry shop at the shopping complex.

“It was also said that part of the building was razed by the fire and the explosion.

“The big sound that caused the false alarm came from the compressor of the air conditioning system at the shop, ”he said.

Mba also said that no lives were lost in the incident except for the property contained in parts of the building razed by the fire.

He urged residents of the territory to disregard the rumour and move on with their legitimate businesses, assuring them of police’s readiness to protect their lives and property.

The police spokesman, however, advised property owners to always provide safety equipment in their buildings and to ensure strict adherence to safety precautions and to avoid similar occurrence in future.
