Top candidates in the Anambra State governorship election slated for November 16, have taken to social media to win over the hearts of the electorate. Candidates of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Chris Ngige; Labour Party, Dr. Patrick Ubah; and Willie Obiano of the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance are using the platform to announce policy thrusts, building recognition and canvassing for votes. The micro-blogging service, Twitter, is particularly being used as the key digital battleground by the trio to engage with voters in the state. Each of them is using the online platform to engage their followers in the build up to the polls. Ngige was the first to register a presence on Twitter as he set the ball rolling on August 22, tweeting via @SenChrisNgige. Ngige, who periodically tweets in both English and Igbo languages, has garnered the highest number of following on Twitter with over 2,000 people subscribing to his daily tweets. Ngige, who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, got a retweet from Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, who is of the APC, within the first few days he joined the social network. Responding to the gesture, Ngige tweeted, “I thank my brother Governor, @raufaregbesola, Ogbeni of Osun, for welcoming me to Twitter with his 21,000 followers. Our victory is sure come November 16.” Also in his early days on Twitter, he aligned himself with the catch phrase — I have a dream — of the late American civil rights activist, Martin Luther King (Jnr). He tweeted, “I have a dream when Ndigbo shall arise and throw away the chains of slavery and when Anambra shall be the pride of Nigeria. I have a dream when mediocre governance shall be history in our land and all our youths shall be freely educated and equipped for tech breakthrough. “May God continue to arrest and frustrate every desperate attempt to rig this poll in Jesus name. The Almighty God is our only father; every godfather of Anambra politics shall be disgraced at the polls. The voice of the people is the voice of God.” On his part, Obiano, candidate of the ruling APGA, signed up for Twitter on September 5. With 320 tweets, he has been able to attract 556 followers on the social network. When he debuted on Twitter, he appealed to a handful of prolific Twitter users on the Nigerian social media space, including award-winning producer and singer, Don Jazzy, to amplify his presence on the social service. His first tweet stated, “I am Willie Obiano, the APGA governorship candidate for Anambra election. Would you mind following back, please?” However, Ngige lent his opponent at the polls a helping hand as he sent him a shout out few hours after he joined the social network. Ngige tweeted, “I welcome my brother Willie Obiano who joined Twitter few days after me.” Obiano replied saying, “Good morning, distinguished @SenChrisNgige. Thank you for welcoming me on Twitter. Clearly, it’s a nice place to cross-fertilize ideas.” When a Twitter user, Perez Tigidam, tackled him on his rationale for choosing to sign up for the social network at the twilight of the election, he tweeted, “Pardon my lateness. My generation’s embrace of technology hasn’t been particularly quick. It’s exciting to be on Twitter, the home of young (at heart) and smart, the place where people aren’t afraid to engage. “Hope to enjoy here. And if I win — by your help — I will still be here with you.” But Obiano has of late been battling on Twitter with an allegation that he signed a postdated agreement with the National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, in which he was alleged to have used the title of a governor in the said document. Meanwhile, he has cleared the air on the said document which widely circulated online, saying it was the handiwork of those seeking to discredit his credentials. Obiano, in a chat with one of his Twitter followers, said, “We are not distracted by documents like this. Am I no longer presumed to be protégé of Gov. Peter Obi? If I did enter into such a laughable agreement, it means I am assuming I’ve won this election even before Anambra people vote. With the desperation on the camp of the opposition, this may not be their last attempt at discrediting us.” For Labour Party’s candidate, Ubah, who joined Twitter on August 23, making use of the social service to raise volunteers is paramount. He declared on his Twitter page that he would need volunteers for office tasks, to distribute flyers and such other people who would serve as election monitors. He wrote, “My vision for Anambra is bigger than my fears; my actions are louder than my words; and my word is my bond. Our mandate is to restore people’s confidence in government. “This election will not be won without the support of all Anambrarians and the help of God. Please, volunteer. Thank you for supporting my campaign!” With 272 tweets he has been able to win over 715 followers who now subscribe to his updates on the social network. http://www.punchng.com/i-punch/anambra-ngige-ubah-obiano-take-election-battle-to-twitter/

The National Commissioner, Election Monitoring, Independent National Electoral Commission, Dr Ishmael Igbani, said on Monday in Abuja that the commission hads commenced cleaning up of voter’s register and data consolidation. He told the News Agency of Nigeria that the exercise was part of the activities lined up by INEC to ensure a hitch-free 2015 general elections. Igbani expressed optimism that the exercise would eliminate duplication or multiple registration. The national commissioner added that detection and elimination of multiple registrations was made possible by the new technology deployed by the commission. He said, “Through the exercise the commission had detected 93,526 multiple registration cases in Anambra State ahead of the November 16 governorship election. “This represents five per cent of the registered voters in Anambra and they have been removed from the voter’s register.” Igbani explained that to ensure the best ever conducted election in the country, chip-based permanent voter cards would soon be issued to all voters. http://www.punchng.com/news/inec-screens-voters-register-uncovers-93526-multiple-registrations-in-anambra/ |

Is it the dead mans fault for lifting up his hand and beating his wife and the mother of his kids, or the wifes fault for not being patient and enduring enough or perharps the parent of wife, the poor girl whose parents sent her to an early marriage instead of sending her to school. Weeks after outsmarting Tony Nwoye for the PDP ticket, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu entered the state to a rousing welcome from his supporters last Saturday. It was his first appearance in the state since he got the court to declare him the PDP candidate. His campaign headquarters close to the popular UNIZIK junction bubbled as supporters thronged the place when he eventually entered the town from Enugu. A reception was eventually held for him at the Emmaus House in the heart of the town. Ukachukwu, at the ceremony, told the people that PDP has come back to reclaim its position in Anambra State and urged the party’s supporters to remain steadfast. He informed supporters in all 326 wards that they have been made canvassers for the party to ensure that the party wins the election convincingly. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/ukachukwu-appears/ |
ADO-EKITI — Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, yesterday, faulted critics of Nigeria’s first lady, Patience Jonathan over the honorary doctorate degree conferred on her by a university in South Korea. The minister, who spoke in Ado-Ekiti, said that the criticism was “not only out of place, but also bereft of common sense.” Wike was in Ado-Ekiti for the inauguration of the College of Technology building in Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, ABUAD, named after President Goodluck Jonathan. It will be recalled that some Nigerians, including the opposition party, All Progressives Congress, APC, had condemned the decision by Mrs. Jonathan to receive the award. The critics had said that it was ill-timed for the first lady to receive the award, when universities in the country were shut down because of ASUU strike. Wike said that there was nothing wrong with the action of the first lady as long as it was the university that decided to extend such rewarding gesture to her. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/wike-faults-critics-first-ladys-honorary-degree-award/ |
AKURE— A 16-year-old mother of two, Ebere Ogu, has allegedly stabbed his 35-year-old husband, Patrick, to death in Akure, the OndoState capital, during a fight, and has fled with her children. Detectives from the criminal Investigation Division of the state Police Command are presently looking for her. Vanguard gathered that the crime was committed last Thursday at their number 70 Ijapo extension residence in Akure at 5a.m. Chinedu, a native of ImoState was a staff of Owena River Basin Authority, Alagbaka in Akure. A co-tenant, who gave his name as Kelechi, said: “Ebere and Patrick frequently engage in fights but on Thursday, October 17, at 5a.m., the couple began to fight. “Most times they engage in such fights, I go there to settle it. But on this fateful morning, when I got into their room I saw Ebere holding a knife against her husband so I pleaded with her to drop the knife and pleaded with Patrick not to beat his wife. “At the first attempt I succeeded in separating them. So Ebere dropped the knife. But as soon as Patrick saw that his wife had dropped the knife, he seized the opportunity to pounce on her and gave her another beating. How he died “I told Patrick to stop, but I noticed that when he tried to move away he slumped and that was when I screamed for help and called other members of the house. “When we entered the apartment we realised that Patrick was already on the floor. So people began to urge Ebere to lift her husband up. She eventually did and we saw that the father of two was already bleeding. “We were all shocked and most of the people took to their heels. Ebere escaped with her two kids to an unknown destination.” Police image-maker, Wole Ogodo, confirmed the ugly incident. Ogodo said: “One Mr. Tuyi, who is the landlord of the house the couple lived in, reported the incident to the Police Station on Thursday 17, at 6.45a.m. Ogodo said that policemen are searching for the suspected killer, while the corpse of the deceased had been deposited at the Akure State Specialist Hospital morgue for autopsy. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/16-yr-old-mother-2-stabs-husband-death/ |
Ms_Steph: To me I feel its wrong nd this is my reason, every church believe there is a God but d same churches interpret his words different so when u kip on moving from 1 church to d other you will get confused. For example some churches preach about why women should cover deir hair or not wear trousers to church while others can give reasons why it is not wrongThen, how will you know if your current church is telling you the truth. I believe in compare and contrast. |
