Politics / Don’t Allow People Of Questionable Character As Community Policing Members–igp by zakim(m): 7:27am On Jul 10, 2020 |
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohamed Adamu, has cautioned Nigerians against allowing people of questionable character to serve as members of community policing to effectively safeguard the lives and property of the citizenry. Besides, the IGP also said that only people of proven integrity should be considered in the proposed recruitment of special constables at the grassroots level for maximum performance. Adamu spoke on Thursday while inaugurating the Minna, Shiroro, Paikoro Area Command and Local Government Advisory Committee of Community Policing at the palace of the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Bahago. Represented by the Commissioner of Police in Niger, Adamu Usman, the IGP stressed the need for collective efforts between security agencies and the public in tackling the security challenges currently confronting the country. According to him, the police alone cannot do it alone, adding, however, that with the active collaboration and synergy with all and sundry, security challenges will be overcome. In his remarks, Bahago urged members of the committee to discharge their duties with the fear of Allah, assuring them of his emirate council’s support at all times for them to succeed. The emir also warned his subjects to desist from supplying information to bandits, saying that instead, they should assist the police with useful information on the whereabouts of bad eggs in order to rid the state of criminal elements. NAN In the same vein, the chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Council, Alhaji Ibrahim Lalalo, expressed the determination of council chairmen in the state to the protection of their people against all forms of insecurity. Lalalo commended Gov. Abubakar Sani Bello, Bahago and the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adamu Usman, for their efforts at curtailing the security challenges in some parts of the state. Business / How Banker Attempted To Rob Customer Of N5m Savings In Sokoto by zakim(m): 4:04pm On Jul 09, 2020 |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested one Ezeagbor Chijeoke for allegedly attempting to rob a customer of his five million naira savings. The suspect was a contract staff of the First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Sokoto main office. The suspect was said to have opened the account for the customer and even helped him download the bank mobile application to ease his financial transaction. Daily Trust learnt that the customer made an initial deposit of five million Naira into the account. The zonal head of EFCC in charge of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states, Abdullahi Lawal who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect called another customer who is a police officer that there was a deal which they could jointly execute and get big money. “When the policeman came, he told him about the customer and what they should do to get the money in his account,” he disclosed. Lawal added:” He told the policeman to use his gun to force the customer whom he would invite to his place to transfer all the money in his account, using his mobile phone to another account and shoot him to death after completing the transaction.” The EFCC zonal head said the suspect promised to give the policeman N1.5 million out of the money but the policeman quickly notified the commission about the plan. This led to the arrest of the suspect, Lawal said According to him, their investigation further revealed that the suspect had defrauded another customer of one million Naira meant to get him a CBN Treasury bill. “He gave him CBN Treasury Bill’s certificate and receipt which we confirmed to be forged,” he said Lawal said that the suspect was handed over to the police for further investigation. Politics / COVID-19: FG Reverses Decision On School Resumption by zakim(m): 7:05am On Jul 09, 2020 |
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, says the Federal Government of Nigeria will not reopen schools as earlier decided in view of the rising cases of coronavirus in the country. Adamu disclosed this to State House reporters on Wednesday after the virtual meeting of the Federal Executive Council, chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, had, on June 29 during a briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, announced the reopening of schools for Primary 6, JSS 3 and SSS 3 students to enable them to prepare for their examinations. The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, had, on Monday, reportedly said the 2020 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) would hold from August 4 to September 5. But Adamu on Wednesday, emphasised that schools would remain closed until it was certified that the situation was safe. He said this was not the right time to open schools, adding that the government would not mind forfeiting the WASSC earlier scheduled to begin on August 4 in order to save the lives of students. He said the West African Examinations Council could not determine the resumption date of schools for Nigeria. Adamu said final year students preparing for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations would not be allowed to return to school contrary to earlier announcement. He said: “I don’t know whether you journalists are misquoting the Minister of State for Education or maybe quoting what WAEC said and made it into a story. “Schools under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education will not be opened on August 4 or anytime soon. “Our schools will only open when we believe it’s safe for our children and that is when the situation is right, not when the incidence of the infection is going up in the nation. “I just want to make it clear. “We’ll not open soon for examination or for any reason, unless it is safe for our children, even WAEC. WAEC will not determine for us what we do. Schools will remain closed. “Yesterday (Tuesday), we called on stakeholders who would tell us the situation and the way it should be done for it to be safe. “While the meeting was going on, WAEC announced that they are starting examinations. “Let’s see who they’re going to start with. “I’ll also like to use this position to ask those states that have already announced (reopening), I appeal to them. “I think it is not safe. “I feel responsible for all children, not just those who are in federal government-controlled schools. “Please, let’s save our children from this. “One infected child is enough to infect a whole class. “When they close from class they go into the dormitory, this is not the right time to open schools. “I appeal to the states that have already announced to reconsider it.” Adamu, while reacting to the point that Nigeria will be the only country to miss out of the WAEC examinations, said: “I, as Minister of Education, if I’m given the chance, I don’t mind Nigeria losing a whole school year than exposing our children to danger. “WAEC is a parastatal of the Ministry of Education, they cannot determine for the government what it does.” School proprietors express shock The spokesman of the WAEC, Demianus Ojijeogu, could not be reached on phone on Wednesday. But the President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Yomi Otubela, said: “It would be a thing of shock to stakeholders that the Federal Ministry of Education is calling off the examination after the West Africa Examination Council on Tuesday claimed that it had consulted widely before coming up with the date for the examination. “The Minister of State for Education also said the same and we were invited to stakeholders’ meeting with the minister where most Commissioners for Education were part of the virtual meeting including the WAEC, the NECO and others and modalities for the examinations were discussed extensively and the minister promised to get back to us. “That in just 24 hours, the ministry will announce that the exam would no longer hold further confirms the way decisions are taken. “In as much as I would not want to confirm the development yet, I am worried like every other Nigerian,” he said. Crime / COVID-19: India Records 100,000 Cases In 6 Days, Death Toll Hits 20,000 by zakim(m): 4:02pm On Jul 07, 2020 |
The death toll from the novel coronavirus pandemic in India has surpassed 20,000 amid huge daily spikes in infections as the country introduces further relaxations to its lockdown. “A total of 22,452 fresh cases and 467 deaths in the last 24 hours pushed the caseload in the country to 719,665 and the death count to 20,160,’’ data from the Federal Health Ministry showed on Tuesday. The rate of new infections as well as deaths has been rising at the fastest pace after India started easing its lockdown since mid-May, with resumption of domestic flights and train services and reopening of offices and marketplaces. Authorities reopened major monuments across India for visitors from Monday. However, the world-famous Taj Mahal remained closed. Government data shows that while India reached its first 100,000 infections in 110 days by May 19, the last 100,000 infections were recorded in merely six days from July 2. On Monday, India had surpassed Russia as the country with the third-highest coronavirus caseload in the world. India is now behind the U.S. and Brazil; however, it has relatively fewer fatalities. It is ranked at number eight globally behind the U.S., Brazil, Britain, Italy, Mexico, France and Spain. Health officials said the number of deaths could rise significantly in the coming weeks with the record rise in infections. The western state of Maharashtra, which has the country’s financial hub of Mumbai as its regional capital, is the worst-hit by the pandemic in India, with 211,987 infections and 9,026 deaths. National capital, New Delhi, is also among the epicentres, reporting 100,823 infections and 3,115 deaths. Politics / We Lost 8,370 Members To Boko Haram – Adamawa Church by zakim(m): 7:21am On Jul 03, 2020 |
The Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, better identified as Eklesiyya Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN), says it lost over 8,370 members to Boko Haram attacks in the Northeast. The EYN, which was established 97 years ago in Garkida, but currently with headquarters in Kwarhi of Adamawa State, said at a world press conference in Yola yesterday that eight pastors were among the Boko Haram victims. Joel Billi, EYN President, who read the text of the press conference at the EYN main branch in Jimeta, Yola, said EYN was the single Christian denomination worst hit by activities of the Boko Haram. “Over 700,000 members have been displaced, with only seven out of 60 district church councils not directly affected by the insurgency,” the EYN president said. He said 217 out of the abducted 276 Chibok school girls belonged to the EYN. He appealed to the federal government and the governments of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states to rescue the remaining Chibok schoolgirls as well as Leah Sharibu, Alice Loksha and hundreds of others abducted by the Boko Haram. Rev Joel Billi, who also indicated that many communities in hard-hit Gwoza in Borno State remained deserted after numerous Boko Haram attacks, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to deploy at least a battalion “behind the Gwoza Hills” to encourage the return of residents now in IDPs camps.
