Hoodlums, early hours of Wednesday, disrupted activities at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State over COVID-19 claims in the state. The attackers, witnessed said, stormed the facility at about 8:am. The invasion came as health workers and medical doctors were planning to address the Press on the state of affairs of the state as it concerned COVID-19. The hoodlums headed to the administrative block where they forced their way into the Chief Medical Director’s office and “ransacked every where”, according to a staff who spoke on condition of anonymity. “They proceeded to the account and records office where they disrupt activities and made away with cash, files and laptops,” he explained further. He noted that the attackers were yelling that the hospital was giving the state a bad name by alleging that there was COVID-19 in the state against the state government’s contrary position. “They might be angry because it was the hospital that claimed it treated some COVID-19 patients before transferring them to the Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) in Abuja,” the source noted. Six months on from the novel coronavirus outbreak, the World Health Organization said on Monday that it was sending a team to China to work towards finding the source of the pandemic. The WHO warned that in an atmosphere of global division and politicisation of the COVID-19 crisis, it feared the worst was yet to come. The UN health agency lamented the “very tragic” milestones of 500,000 deaths and 10 million confirmed infections being reached, just as it marks on Tuesday six months since it was first informed of the outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The WHO is sending a team to China next week in connection with the search for the origin of the virus that sparked the global pandemic. The organisation has been pressing China since early May to invite in its experts to help investigate the animal origins of the coronavirus. “We can fight the virus better when we know everything about the virus, including how it started,” WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual press conference. “We will be sending a team next week to China to prepare for that and we hope that that will lead into understanding how the virus started.” He did not specify the make-up of the team, nor what specifically their mission would consist of. Scientists believe the virus jumped from animals to humans, possibly from a market in Wuhan selling exotic animals for meat. A former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Kwara State, Comrade Issa Aremu, has urged INEC to postpone the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic to safeguard lives. The labour leader, while speaking in Kaduna, said considering the huge spike in the number of COVID-19 cases and rising deaths across the country, it would be imperative for INEC to postpone the elections as only the living could vote and be voted for. Aremu said, “The death of a former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Isiaka Ajimobi, who died of COVID-19, and the figures of fatalities reeled out daily by the NCDC show that the disease is real and is killing Nigerians. “There are enough reasons for INEC to consider the spike in the number of cases and fatalities across the country and postpone the elections in Edo and Ondo states. “I monitored the recent party primaries in Edo State and there was no semblance of COVID-19 protocols of physical distancing or use of face mask by either APC or PDP; not even our own LP. “INEC can take recourse to the constitution and consider the pandemic as an emergency to shift the elections in solidarity with those that have been killed by the disease and to safeguard the lives of Nigerians.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/covid-19-aremu-wants-edo-ondo-elections-postponed.html |

A mobile court sitting in the premises of Jabi Lake Mall has unsealed the mega retail shopping facility, which was sealed 10 days ago after a popular Nigerian musician, Naira Marley, flew in from Lagos and held a concert there. Ruling on an application brought before the court by the defense counsel seeking for the unsealing of the property, Magistrate Idayat Akonni, said the management of the mall has shown remorse for disobeying the COVID-19 restrictions order, hence the decision of the court to order the reopening of the business premises. FCTA shuts down Jabi Lake Mall for violating ban on social gatherings Jabi Lake Mall: No concert is worth anybody’s life – FCT minister She said the sealing of the premises in the first place was to show that laws are meant to be obeyed. Akonni therefore urged the management of the Jabi Lake Mall to tender unreserved apologies to the government for violating restrictions order. Speaking with journalists after the court ruling, Counsel to Jabi Lake Mall, Barr. Nnandi Ekwem, said since his clients showed remorse for their wrongdoing, it was expedient that the premises be opened. He said the economic losses accruing from the sealing up of the facility were huge, as according to him, over a 100 retailers who operate at the mall were directly affected while their employees were also impacted negatively by the development. He hailed the judgement, saying it was well deserved. The mall was sealed penultimate Sunday by a court order after Naira Marley broke interstate travel ban and flew in to Abuja from Lagos and held a well attended concert, thereby flouting the guidelines put in place to curb the spread of Coronavirus. Contrary to the statistics presented by the federal government about the mysterious deaths in Kano between April and May, the state government yesterday received a report of verbal autopsy conducted to determine the cause of the deaths. According to the report presented to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, only 15.9 per cent of the deaths were related to coronavirus. The report conflicted with the figures presented by the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire last week which suggested that between 50-60 per cent of the deaths were due to COVID-19 pandemic. Elated Ganduje while receiving the report said the report had put to rest hypothesis, potentialities, and expectations of those who never wished Kano well. According to him, “the report of the Federal government showing 60 per cent dying from COVID-19 lacks all the variables, lacks correlations, it did not pass the time of basic validity and reliability, signifying nothing and misleading everybody.” He said he was personally going to take the report to President Muhammadu Buhari, the Secretary-General of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, and the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire. The verbal autopsy report, according to the lead researcher, Professor Mukhtar Gadanya of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, suggested that only 255 people were believed to have died from coronavirus-related cases. He said 70 per cent of the deaths were on medication for different illnesses including hypertension, diabetes, and many other terminal diseases. He said 60 per cent of the deaths were males while 40 per cent represents females. The report suggested that 76 per cent of the deaths were aged above 50, adding that the said mysterious deaths had its peak around April with 121 persons. The report further added that 1,774 people actually died on April 1st and May 2nd 2020 at the 8 Metropolitan Local Government Areas of the state. It said 1004 of the deceased died from fever, 59 shortness of breath, while 69 from various complications, while 567 had no fever at all. …As NEITI, BugdIT laud corporation’s mgt The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has published its audited financial statements for 2018 financial year. The audited financial statements for the state-owned oil company and its 20 subsidiaries and business divisions, were signed by the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Malam Mele Kyari and the Chief Executives of the various subsidiaries. In the corporation’s first ever audited financial statements, three of its refineries, namely Warri, Kaduna and Port-Harcourt refineries, recorded a combined loss of N154 billion in the corporation’s audited financial statements for 2018. Kaduna refinery also recorded zero revenue for the group. NNPC said it made the statements public in a bid to improve transparency around its operations. Further analysis of the subsidiaries’ audited accounts indicated that the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), the group’s most profitable subsidiary, reported revenue of N5.04 trillion in 2018 and profit of N1.01 trillion as against the N1.65 trillion it recorded in 2017. The report shows total assets managed by NAPIMS stood at N18.6 trillion, with the oil and gas components valued at N14.2 trillion. Its oil production subsidiary, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), reported a post-tax profit of N179 billion in 2018. However, the corporation did not publish consolidated audited accounts for the group. Commenting on the financial statements, the Executive Secretary of Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Mr Waziri Audio, said the corporation’s action showed the transparency of its operations. Expressing his views on the report via his Twitter handle@ Waziriadio, the NEITI boss stated: “Having such disclosures is good for transparency and accountability. I urge them to make this a regular practice and in open data format”, he added. Similarly, BudgIT, a civic organisation committed to application of technology to intersect citizen engagement with institutional improvement to facilitate societal change, has commended the corporation for publishing the audited accounts of its subsidiaries and business divisions for the first time, In her remarks on the public accounts disclosure by the corporation, a Project Officer with BudgIT’s Extractive Department, Adejoke Akinbode, noted that “Launching an OpenData segment on its official website is a very commendable step by the NNPC. We encourage Nigerians to download the audit reports and other data put up by NNPC, study them, and Ask Questions.” Commenting, BudgIT’s Principal Lead, Gabriel Okeowo, said: “The federal government needs to reform the NNPC to reverse the trend of the massive losses recorded by some of the NNPC subsidiaries annually. “This audit report is a laudable step towards showing Nigerians the true picture of what is going on in NNPC”, he added. The corporation has been criticised for years of conducting the country’s oil business in secret by publishing only unaudited financial reports. A last-minute meeting summoned to discuss the fate of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has failed to save the embattled chief executive as the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday said that it would go ahead with June 22, 2020 governorship primary election. The APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, fielded questions from State House reporters after a meeting with the Chief of Staff (CoS) to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari. The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, as well as four members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC), including the National Vice Chairman (North West), Barr. Inuwa Abdulkadir; National Treasurer, Adamu Panda; National Welfare Officer, Ibrahim Masari; and National Publicity Secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu. Bagudu, who represented the APC governors at the meeting, did not wait while Oshiomhole was speaking with journalists after the meeting. The meeting was believed to have discussed the fallout of the disqualification of the incumbent Governor Obaseki from participating in the state governorship primary election. Oshiomhole, who said the APC had followed all necessary guidelines and standard practice required ahead of the primary, expressed optimism that the process would be “free, fair, and transparent” and produce a candidate that would unify the party. Professor Abubakar Mohammed Siddique of the Department of Political Science and International Studies at Ahmadu Bello University, ABU and Director, Centre for Democratic Development Research and Training (CEDDERT), said the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari is right to protect her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari. The don was reacting to the incident that led to shooting at the presidential villa last week. President Buhari on Sunday ordered an investigation into the reported gunshots in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Daily Trust had reported how trouble broke out when First Lady Aisha Buhari asked the Special Assistant to President Buhari, Sabiu Tunde Yusuf, to self-isolate in line with the COVID-19 guideline after returning from Lagos. Different sources including those that worked in the Villa in the past said the probe directed by the president would most likely not produce any result because it is a family matter. Some of them said the crisis is an extension of supremacy battle and deep rooted rivalry between the first lady and her inner circle on one hand and the purported “cabal” in the presidency on the other. Tunde is the son of the younger sister of Mamman Daura who is Buhari’s nephew. He is said to be very powerful and exudes enormous authority around President Buhari. Though Aisha had given her own side of the story and a statement from the villa followed yesterday, Tunde is yet to say anything. Efforts to hear his side of the story was not successful as he did not return a call and did not also respond to a text message sent to him around 7.30pm yesterday.
