PoliticsKano Loses 3 High Profile Personalities Again by zakim(op): 8:39am On May 01, 2020
Kano State has again lost three high profile personalities to death. Their deaths on Wednesday came after about 12 high profile personalities died in the state last week. On Wednesday morning, a former Director of Finance, National Orthopaedic Hospital Dala, Alhaji Salisu Ado died at Dala. Late Alhaji Salisu Ado was admitted with severe breathing difficulties and the doctors tried to save him but he subsequently died.

The death also occurred of Alhaji Aminu Yahya, who was a former Commissioner in the Ministry of Education, Kano, and also a former Executive Director with one of the state’s agencies. Also, a former Executive Secretary of Kano State Agency for Mass Education, Alhaji Muhammad Aliyu, has passed on. His burial took place at GATC quarters Kabuga in Kano. A community-based survey with strong evidence of data analytics has confirmed a recent Daily Trust exclusive report on increased mortality in Kano State within days.

Daily Trust on 21st April, 2020, reported that 150 people died in Kano in three days and were buried in three cemeteries, heightening fears that they might have died as a result of a strange ailment. The state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, in a reaction to Daily Trust enquiries had said the ministry could not immediately verify the claim but assured that it was investigating the incident and possible causes of the deaths. Governor Abdullahi Ganduje earlier denied the Daily Trust story in an interview with Channels Television, but later admitted the development through his commissioner.

One week after the Daily Trust report, the governor in a statement through his Commissioner of Information, Muhammad Garba, confirmed the deaths but said the preliminary report showed it was not connected to the coronavirus (COVID-19). Nigeria has been battling COVID-19 pandemic since March with 1,728 cases recorded as at Wednesday, among which 45 deaths occurred. Kano recorded 115 cases with one death, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The survey, which was conducted by an Applied Mathematician and Data Analyst, at the Department of Mathematics, Yusuf Maitama Sule University in Kano, Yusuf Yau Gambo, was reviewed by two experts in the field of medicine, along with a clinical perspective provided to further clarify the survey result.

PoliticsContinue With Hajj Registration, NAHCON Tells Intending Pilgrims by zakim(op): 5:28am On Apr 27, 2020
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria yesterday advised intending pilgrims to continue with the 2020 Hajj registration pending the Saudi Arabia Kingdom’s final position. NAHCON, in a statement by its Head of Public Affairs, Fatima Sanda Usara, said Saudi Arabian authorities had not taken a final decision on cancellation or otherwise of the 2020 Hajj exercise. “For this reason, this plan is not applied in Nigeria alone; there are other Muslim countries taking this step as well to forestall any last minute unpreparedness” it said.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Saudi Arabian Hajj Minister Mohammed Banten had on April 1 said the Kingdom was concerned about the safety of pilgrims, urging those getting ready for the spiritual journey to delay concluding contracts. The NAHCON noted yesterday that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had cancelled Umrah in 2020 indefinitely, saying “Thus, no one is advised to make payment towards embarking on Umrah trip in the year 2020 to any operator”.

It urged intending pilgrims to report to NAHCON, any unlicensed tour operator encouraging them to make 2020 Hajj or Umrah payments to their agencies.

PoliticsSoldiers Kill 89 Bandits In Zamfara, Recover Arms by zakim(op): 5:59pm On Apr 26, 2020
Troops on Friday killed 89 bandits near Gidan Jaja village in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Daily Trust gathered yesterday. The operation, according to reliable sources, was jointly carried out by the 35 Battalion and 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Katsina, Police Special Operatives, and personnel of the Operation Hadarin Daji.

Sources close to the operation told Daily Trust that many motorcycles and firearms were recovered. It came barely a week after the bandits ambushed and killed four soldiers in a forest near Birane village in Zurmi. Another source told our correspondent that hundreds of rustled cows and dozens of rifles were recovered during the operation. A resident of Gidan Jaja told Daily Trust that they noticed movement of troops with heavy weapons and many bodies were seen after the operation.

A statement signed by the Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche, also said in Abuja yesterday that troops of Operation Hadarin Daji supported by the 35 Battalion and Quick Response Group of the 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, two helicopter gunships of the Nigerian Air Force, and the police attacked and neutralised bandits in Gidan Jaja, Zamfara State on April 25, and recovered arms and ammunition from them. He said 89 bandits were killed and many of them escaped with gunshot wounds.

Enenche added that the troops rescued five kidnap victims and recovered 322 rustled cows, 77 motorcycles and nine cell phones. He said a formal handover of the kidnapped victims and rustled cows would be carried out after due process. The Secretary to the Katsina State Government, Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa, said yesterday that many bandits were killed as troops rescued kidnap victims in a joint military operation along the Katsina/Zamfara border forest on Friday night.

He said in a statement through his Director of Press, Abdullahi Yar’adua, while receiving the rescued victims that the operation was carried out by ground forces of the 17th Brigade and the Air Force from Katsina and Zamfara axis. He said the operation led to the destruction of the bandits’ camps and inflicted several casualties on them. Some of the bandits he said fled and abandoned their victims who ran to the soldiers. While commending the troops for the gallant operation, Inuwa urged them to sustain the tempo.

Those rescued are Amadu Rufa’i, 45 years; Habibu Yakubu, 25 years both of Mazanya village in Jibia LGA of Katsina State; Hauwa’u Lawali, 13 years; Khadija Rabe, 13 years and Sumayya Rabe, 10 years, all of Karamne village in Madarumfa region of Niger Republic.

Narrating their ordeals, Rufai said they were kidnapped when working on their farms while the girls said they were hawking onions in Gurbi, a neighbouring town in Zamfara State when the bandits seized them.

He said they spent five days in captivity, adding that the bandits had started demanding for N10 million ransom from his family when the military struck.

According to him, the operation caused serious damages on the bandits and their camps as they saw many corpses on their way out of the forest.

PoliticsFG Should Tackle ‘one Million And Awawa Boys’ Menace by zakim(op): 4:43am On Apr 26, 2020
I wish to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the rising issue of hoodlums and miscreants in Lagos called ‘One million and the Awawa boys. These boys raid areas in Lagos and rape women both married and single. They cut of people’s hands, steal cars, break into locked up shops and steal from them. Sometimes, they officially send letter to an area before attack. Why won’t the police force use those letters as a lead to take them down? But we are just left to our fate because these boys have not yet attacked a caliber that would be felt in the state. The Lagos state government has failed to tackle this menace. Please, FG should uproot these boys now before they transcend to another form of Boko Haram.

HealthFuneral Prayers For Multiples As Kano Death Toll Mounts by zakim(op): 6:43am On Apr 25, 2020
While the Kano State government continues to deny the mysterious deaths being recorded within the state capital, residents of the city are living in fear as more and more burials are taken place daily.

After Daily Trust reported that over 150 people were buried in three cemeteries within the capital last weekend, the state government denied the report.

However, residents are still apprehensive over the unprecedented death rates. Some residents who spoke Daily Trust Saturday said though there was a little respite, Janaza prayers are still being conducted for multiples who are thought to have died from severe malaria and typhoid fever. Within Zangon Barebari neighbourhood alone, our correspondent gathered that about 15 people died between Wednesday and Friday.

Similarly, an attendant at Dandolo Cemetery told Daily Trust Saturday in confidence that the number of deaths in Kano is still increasing, adding that “between Wednesday and Thursday we have buried about 67 corpses.” Some bereaved families told Daily Trust Saturday that their relatives were on outpatient visitations to hospitals for various ailments but with the lockdown in force, coupled with the scare for coronavirus at private health facilities, the deceased had some disruptions that kept them from accessing medical care, which might have resulted in their deaths.

Daily Trust Saturday gathered that in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in the state, the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital AKTH, the largest tertiary health facility in the state, and many public hospitals, suspended services at its specialty clinics and restricted the number of outpatient visitation to the facility thereby leaving hundreds of patients without medical care. Mustapha Muhammad Zakari, a resident of Gwammaja Quarters in Dala Local Government Area, lost his mother who had been battling diabetes for over a year. He said his mother died in between hospitals after being rejected at Dala Orthopaedic Hospital.

“For over a year, my mother had been battling diabetes and she used to access care at a private hospital. But with the current reality on ground, the COVID-19, coupled with the lockdown in force, the hospital is not operating, as a result when her condition deteriorated last week we took her to Dala Hospital but she was rejected there and on our way to locate another hospital she died,” he said.

Malam Aminu Ibrahim, a bereaved who spoke to our correspondent, said his father was diagnosed with malaria and typhoid fever before he died at a private clinic at Yankaba.

Aminu, like Muhammad, said his father was rejected at Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital before he was moved to the private clinic.

“My father died from severe malaria and typhoid fever. It was a brief fever and when it started, we took him to a private laboratory within the neighbourhood where they took his blood samples and diagnosed him with malaria and typhoid,” he said.

“After he had been diagnosed, we took him to Nassarawa Hospital but he could not be admitted on the pretext that there was no doctor. From there we moved to a private clinic at Yankaba where he eventually died the following day.”

PoliticsKyari Played Key Role In Return Of $300m Abacha Loot – US Govt by zakim(op): 10:15pm On Apr 24, 2020
The United States government says the late Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, played important role in the repatriation of over $300 million from funds allegedly stolen by the former head of state, Sani Abacha. The Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Tibor Nagy, in a condolence message to President Muhammadu Buhari, described the deceased as a dedicated public servant and respected interlocutor for the American government.

‘‘Kyari was a valued and respected interlocutor for the U.S. government and particularly for our leadership team in Abuja. ‘‘We appreciate working with him on many important matters, including the return to the Nigerian people of over $300 million in funds stolen by Sani Abacha. ‘‘He envisioned the funds going to three geographically disparate infrastructure projects as a way to unite Nigeria economically,’’ Nagy said, according to a statement issued on Friday by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu.

The U.S. Assistant Secretary, according to the statement, said that this vision, encapsulated by the late Chief of Staff, was a reflection of his tireless championing of a solid and prosperous future for Nigeria. ‘‘His dedication to this matter, to fighting corruption, and to countless other investments and policies for the future of Nigeria will leave a lasting impact on your country,’’ he added.

Nagy, who condoled with the government and people of Nigeria, the Kyari family on the loss, promised that the U.S. government would stand with Nigeria in the struggle against the coronavirus pandemic.

The President also received condolence messages from Usani Uguru Usani, former Minister of Niger Delta; Alhaji Sabiu Bako, Kano-based businessman and Bataure Abdulazziz, a trade union leader.

PoliticsCOVID-19: FG Denies Plan To Borrow Pension Fund For Palliatives by zakim(op): 9:59pm On Apr 24, 2020
The Federal Government has said that it will not borrow from the contributory pension fund to provide palliatives to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 lockdown in the country. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, said this on Friday in Abuja at the 19th joint national briefing of the committee.

The Contributory Pension Scheme, which came into existence in 2004, has grown to over N10trn. Apparently reacting to an earlier comment by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, who opposed the reported move, the SGF said that although the government had toyed with the idea of borrowing from the fund, it concluded that it was too early for government to dip its hands into the fund. Mustapha said, “We had looked at the issue of pension funds.

As a matter of fact, we even got the minister of state for education to do us a position paper and our conclusion was that the time is not even right for us to go there because the entire world order in terms of our economy and in terms of our health system has been disrupted by COVID -19 and the consequences nobody can imagine until probably the dust is settled.” Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has promised to intervene and resolve the industrial dispute between the Plateau State Government and some state health workers who were allegedly sacked.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr. Festus Keyamo, at the briefing said that while the National Industrial Court (NIC) had closed, due to the COIVID-19 lockdown, for workers to seek immediate judicial relief, the ministry would be ready to act as conciliator in the matter between the health workers and the state government. According to him, the ministry will only intervene in industrial cases that involve health workers because of the nature of the services they are providing during this pandemic.

“Our duty in the ministry of labour is to act as conciliators in such a circumstance. For now, because we are very much aware of the impediments, if any such thing occurs now in respect to health workers who suffer any kind of injustice from their employers, the impediments are that the courts are not opened especially the National Industrial Court (NIC), they can’t rush to court and get a relief.

“Even the ministries are closed for now. But perhaps, they can try and get in touch with us through the ministry’s emails or even my personal social media handle. If they send me a direct message, because these are unusual times, to act as conciliators at this time. We understand the primacy of the work of health workers now so we can make exception only for health workers; to come out of our confinement to act as consolidators in such cases,” Keyamo said.

PoliticsKano Stands Still As Residents Comply With Lockdown by zakim(op): 8:26am On Apr 18, 2020
Kano city stood still yesterday as the residents complied with the stay-at-home order imposed by the state government to check the spread of coronavirus. The lockdown which began at 10pm Thursday was generally complied with throughout the metropolis, our correspondents report. Prayers were not conducted at Juma’at mosques in seven of the eight metropolitan local government areas visited, and at the time of filing this report, no mosque was reported to have violated the order.

Our reporters who visited Mukhtar Abbas Juma’at mosque, Farm Centre, Ansaru-Sunnah Masjid in Fagge, Sheihk Ahmad Tijjani Juma’at mosque, Kofar Mata, Wambai Juma’at mosque, Kofar Wambai and Sheikh Zarban Juma’at mosque in Yankaba observed that they were all closed.

A few however observed Zuhr prayer in small neigbourhood mosques across the city. Major markets visited, including the Abubakar Rimi market in Sabongari, Kwari textiles market, Kurmi market and Tarauni market were all silent. Water vendors were at different areas of the city carrying out their business without hindrance. The police, Federal Road Safety Corps and KAROTA personnel drafted to enforce the lockdown order were seen at strategic locations mounting barricades and checking vehicles.

Most of the vehicles sighted by our reporters were believed to be for essential service providers including hospital staff, security and journalists, among others with some residents peeping through their windows to catch a glimpse of the almost silent city. Staff of the State emergency Management Agency (SEMA) went round the city in case of any emergency.

Eight people who were said to have arrived from Abuja were arrested at Kantin Kwari market and taken to an isolation centre for medical examination. Some small streets especially within the neigbourhood were converted to football fields by some youths, thereby defying the order and social distancing advice.

At Hotoro, Kawo, Tinshama and Ladanai in Nassarawa Local Government, there was a total compliance as shops and other businesses remained closed. Security personnel were seen patroling streets around some mosques to ensure compliance. No one was harassed by the security personnel at the time of Daily Trust’s visit. Residents of Karkasara, Hausawa Quarters, Gyadi-Gyadi as well as Zoo Road also complied with the order and only a few filling stations opened for business.

A watchman, Abba Sulaiman, said if the lockdown persists, the ordinary people would suffer. “I have a little to buy what to eat today and probably tomorrow, but anytime beyond that, I may not have anything left,” he said.

HealthCOVID-19: FG To Assist Kano Manage Situation by zakim(op): 10:24pm On Apr 17, 2020
Following the rise in cases of the COVID-19 in Kano State, the Federal Government has said it would assist the state manage the situation to stop further spread. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 , Boss Mustapha, said this on Friday in Abuja at the 14th joint national briefing of the PTF on COVID-19.

The Kano State government had in response to the development imposed a lockdown and curfew in the state. “Recent data released by the NCDC has shown a rise in the number of cases in Kano. The PTF will visit the state to evaluate the state of readiness and to guide the authorities in the management of the situation,” Mustapha said

He also announced that the Federal Government has developed the protocols on points of entry for Nigerians clamouring to return from abroad and that arrangements have been finalised to bring them home. He said: “As you are aware, so many Nigerians are clamouring to return home.

While we are finalising arrangements for their evacuation, isolation and testing, I am pleased to inform you that the PTF has developed the protocol on points of entry that will address this development going forward. Details will be unveiled subsequently.” He also warned all purveyors of fake news capable of misleading the public and causing distraction in the nation’s collective effort to fight the COVID-19 war. He said, “The objective of the restriction orders is to save the lives of Nigerians from the pandemic and not to cause pains.

The Police and other services have launched investigations into the various reports and the Presidential Task Force shall update you when it is concluded.” He also said that returning the nation to normalcy is depended on the success it will achieve in the fight to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

“This virus has no vaccine. Success will mean a return to normalcy and we can only claim victory when: Cases are no longer increasing; we have no unknown sources for cases; deaths are no longer increasing; more admissions are discharged. The only path to these is your full collaboration and compliance,” he added.

PoliticsMy Bill Not Targeted At Atiku — Sen Gyang by zakim(op): 7:09am On Apr 17, 2020
Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence Senator Istifanus Gyang (PDP, Plateau North), in this interview, spoke on the recurring killings in Plateau State and his bill on minimum qualification for presidential aspirants, among other sundry issues.

Excerpt: What do you think could be the cause of the recurring clashes in Plateau State?

When you see the trend that is happening across the nation, particularly those states that are affected by banditry, you will agree that these are people that are driven by criminality, godlessness and lack of value for human life. For me, there can be no justification for what bandits are doing across the states of the North. If anyone has an issue, there are platforms for such issue to be raised.

You cannot continue to destroy lives, decimate communities, displace villagers and say you have a justification for it. I think the only justification is that they are advancing the agenda of the devil. Some state governments in the Northwest have made several failed attempts to negotiate with bandits.

Do you also support the idea of negotiating with criminals?

Nowhere in the world do you negotiate with criminals and terrorists. All such attempts have failed. What you do with crime is fight it head-on. You enforce the law against criminality. Fighting crime requires enforcement of law and order and the security agencies have that responsibility.

Do you support a regional approach to fighting crime?

What is important is that the states have to be empowered to be in a position to tackle crimes. That’s why some of us had advocated for state police, because as long as states are not empowered; as long as you have a unitarised approach to security, have a command and structure being in Abuja, it cannot go down to the communities.

There are insinuations that your bill on minimum academic qualification for persons seeking elective offices was aimed at stopping former vice president Atiku Abubakar from contesting the 2023 election. What’s your take on that?

I am not aware that Atiku Abubakar does not have the requisite qualifications but for now, GCE is the basic minimum qualification that is required to contest the office of the President of Nigeria. But I feel that anyone that must aspire to leadership at the level of the governor or president, should be someone that is equipped; someone that has both the right attitude and the required aptitude. It is not targeted at anybody. We don’t make laws to target any individual. We make laws for the nation.

What should Nigerians expect from the Senate on resumption from the coronavirus lockdown?

The topical issue globally is about coronavirus and that affects and should target the health sector. What this has done is that it has exposed our unpreparedness as a nation and the fact that our policies and programmes and attention that ought to be given to the health sector and the wellbeing of Nigerians, has been abysmally poor.

To that extent, what will now engage the National Assembly, the Senate in particular, on resumption, should be how to urgently upgrade the health infrastructure of this country. Like every Nigerian is saying, there are some lessons to be learnt from the current incident that is the inability of the ruling class to give attention to basic health facilities because they have the capacity and wherewithal to attend to their health needs outside the country. Now it is a situation where all of us are limited and restricted to the confines of our nation.

We can’t go anywhere now. So, this is the time that we should now prioritise equipping and making sure that our health sector, our health facilities, health institutions, and entire infrastructure in the health sector receive massive upgrade to meet world standard in such a way that we cannot again be having this approach, which is a state of unpreparedness. The issues of poverty should also engage the National Assembly on resumption. The twin issue of health and poverty should be paramount to us.

The coronavirus lockdown has shown that if there is shutdown for one or two days, the whole nation, Nigerians, would be dislocated in such a way that hunger becomes an issue. We have to address the issue of social security for our nation. We have to develop a platform for our social security. Other climes can survive for quite some time because of the social security that is already embedded in their system but ours is lacking and that is why the issue of poverty becomes the issue of life and death.

The health of our people and social security to address the poverty of our people and the economy of our nation would engage the Senate once we resumme.

BusinessCOVID-19: First Bank Grants 2 Months Moratorium On Loan Repayment by zakim(op): 9:00pm On Apr 16, 2020
First Bank of Nigeria has granted a moratorium on loan repayment for Small and Medium Enterprises following the extension of the COVID-19 lockdown period. The bank in a mail to its customers stated that the extended COVID-19 lockdown in some states is a time to double down on efforts to see how it can ease the impact the lockdown may have on its customers.

“We have therefore enhanced palliative measures as we ask ourselves how can we help you through these times. We are introducing special waivers on repayment fees on our credit cards; and a 60-day loan moratorium on our First Edu and First Trader Solution for example. Our aim with the range of solutions is to help cushion the impact of the toll on employment and livelihoods,” it said. The FirstEdu loan is available to private schools’ owners who require extra funds for the smooth running of their school operations

The First Trader Solution, on the other hand, is a short-term overdraft facility offered to traders in pre-approved market locations who deal in fast-moving goods. The bank assured it would continue to work to provide essential banking services throughout various alternative channels.
