OSINBAJO HAS CAPACITY TO TAKE NIGERIA TO GREAT HEIGHTS, SAYS GOV ZULUM AS SHEHU OF BORNO, EMIR OF DAMATURU GIVE STRONG SUPPORT FOR VP’S ASPIRATION *We must work together for Nigeria to be one of the greatest nations on earth – VP *Shehu of Borno to VP: There is nothing we cannot do for you to succeed The presidential bid of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, received further boost on Monday, in Yobe and Borno States where the VP received strong expressions of support from the Governors of Borno, Yobe States, as well as the traditional rulers. On Arrival in Yobe and Borno States Monday, Prof. Osinbajo was warmly received by Governors Mai Mala Buni and Babagana Zulum respectively, alongside other state government officials. The Vice President stopped at intervals to acknowledge the loud cheers from the crowd, and also received warm welcome at the palaces - first in Yobe, the Emir of Damaturu, HRH Hashimi El-Kanemi; and later in Borno, the Shehu of Borno, HRH Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi. In Yobe and Borno, the excitement and the welcome were rousing from residents, men and women, young and old, with many lining the streets, all the way from the airports to the palaces of the traditional rulers - the Emir of Damaturu and Shehu of Borno. In Yobe State, for instance, the Emir of Damaturu, prayed for the VP’s success. “Your Excellency, we will, by the Grace of God, join you; support you in prayers and in all aspects to see that you excel; and at the end of the day, we pray that God will make you the President of this great country, Nigeria. By the time you will return back, we will receive you with the Grand Durbar of the El-Kanemi,” the Emir stated when the Vice President paid a courtesy call at his palace. The Emir further stated that the Vice President also distinguished himself when he was acting president. “Insha Allah, we are expecting that, if God, in his infinite mercy, make it possible, and we are praying for that, we will see continuity in this great country. I wish you very well in life; I wish you good health; courage, wisdom and determination to propel this country to a level that it will be among leading nations globally,” he said. Similarly, the Shehu of Borno, who received Prof. Osinbajo later in the day also on a courtesy call at his palace, also prayed for the VP’s success throughout his tour of states and meetings with delegates for votes in the forthcoming APC primaries. The Shehu assured the VP that "there is nothing we cannot do for you to succeed in Borno State. And we thank you continuously and pray, not only for your support, but for your success. I wish you all the best, God's guidance and protection." During the Vice President’s meeting with Borno delegates, the State Governor Babagana Zulum said "it is the prayers of all Nigerians at this critical time for a visionary leader that will take the country to a greater height; and that leader with the capacity and capability to achieve this is Vice President Yemi Osinbajo,” adding that, "this was the consensus of the people of Borno." He said the State’s party chairman, Hon. Ali Bukar Balori, was right when he described the VP as the party’s candidate, noting that others who came to the State were just aspirants. According to Balori, the Vice President did not need to come to Borno State to seek for votes, because “we know you very well. You have done a lot for us. Everybody here knows what you have done for us. The delegates know. We shall pay you back. One good turn deserves another. Your Excellency, the delegates of Borno are for you. We are declaring here that you are our candidate.” Also, the Vice President, during his courtesy calls to the Emir of Damaturu and Shehu of Borno, restated his commitment to serve the country as his motivation to run for president, and also emphasized the need for unity. Again, highlighting his experience as Vice President under President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof. Osinbajo said he has learnt a lot about governing a diverse and complex country like Nigeria. At the Emir of Damaturu’s Palace, the VP said, “this is a country that has several ethnic groups and different faiths; but it is a country that must stay united. It is a country for which unity is the basis of our collective success, prosperity." According to the VP, it is by being united that Nigeria's potential would be realised. "I think that one of the things I have learnt as Vice President is that our greatness lies in our working together; in the coming together of the faiths and various ethnic groups in the country. That is where our greatness lies. “So, I am, by the Grace of God, prepared for service, and the only reason why I offered myself is because I truly want to serve this country. And I will ensure that I work with others who have the same objectives to ensure that this country is truly great.” Prof. Osinbajo reiterated his call for continuity in government, noting that despite the challenges in security and the economy, they are surmountable. “These are challenges that we are working on day and night to surmount. It is better if there is some continuity in order to be able to effectively surmount these challenges,” he stated. Similarly, while responding to some of the requests presented by the Shehu of Borno at his Palace, Prof. Osinbajo said "I have listened very carefully, Your Royal Highness, to all of the points that you have made, in particular, the point you have made about the national grid. "One of the very important suggestions that we are looking at is that we need alternative grid. The current national grid is possibly too small and can only take about 5,000MW of power. "So, the creation of alternative grids, especially through public-private investment will help us a great deal. I don't think that the country should just have one grid, the national grid. We should have a decentralized system which allows more transmission of power and can reach the farthest parts of the country." Reiterating why he is running for the position of the President of the country, Prof. Osinbajo said, " I do so, especially realising that I am possibly, one who have had very special privilege and special advantage of having served as Vice President of Nigeria for the past seven years; and in that capacity, I have served under President Muhammadu Buhari, who was very open and always transparent, and he has involved me in every aspect of governance. "And I think that after this 7 years period of tutelage of learning under such a great, perceptive leader, it is clear to me that all of that and part of that seven years I have acted as President is preparation. "It's clear to me that all of the privilege and knowledge must not be wasted, especially when our country require leadership after President Buhari and my time (as VP) expires at the end of May next year." During the questions-and-answers session with the APC party delegates, Prof Osinbajo noted that the hallmark of every leader "is to, at least, offer ourselves for the services of our country.” “My concern has always been that of the common man of this country. That is why we started the Social Investment Programmes, which has helped many Nigerians. We will also create an environment where industry, agriculture and in some other sectors that will improve the lives of our people,” he added. The Vice President continues his consultations later today in other States. His visits are in continuation of his consultations with APC stakeholders and delegates across the country ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries. STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE *DETRIBALIZED, RESPECTED BY ALL GOVERNORS, OSINBAJO IS PRESIDENT'S TOP CONFIDANTE, GOV EL-RUFAI SAYS AS KEBBI DEPUTY GOV, STATE DELEGATES SUPPORT VP* _*Nigeria needs continuity in government - Osinbajo*_ _*VP continues nationwide consultations with APC delegates in 28 States, FCT so far*_ With about a week to its presidential primaries, commendations have continued to pour in from state governors, their deputies, and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, who is running for president. On Sunday, in Kebbi and Kaduna States respectively, where Prof. Osinbajo visited in continuation of his consultations with APC stakeholders and delegates across the country, the VP was commended for his efforts in improving governance and dedication to the progress of the country, while stakeholders also canvassed for continuity in government. During the Vice President’s meetings in the states, both Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Samaila Yombe, spoke glowingly about the VP’s qualities, with a call for continuity. Kebbi and Kaduna States inclusive, the Vice President has now visited 28 states, and the FCT, in his nationwide interactions with the ruling party delegates and stakeholders. According to Governor El-Rufai, Prof. Osinbajo is “the number one confidante of the President (Muhammadu Buhari), and “has the respect of all the governors of Nigeria, across party lines, because of the way and manner he steers the affairs of the National Economic Council.” Noting that the VP had visited the State on several occasions, Governor El-Rufai said the Vice President “is not just here because he is running for president. He is here because he has close affinity to the government and people of Kaduna State. I want those that don’t know, our party leaders and delegates, to know that Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has always shown uncommon love for the people of Kaduna State.” Speaking further of the VP’s leadership qualities, the Kaduna State Governor said of Prof. Osinbajo: “I have worked very closely with the Vice President in the last seven years. Before then, we worked as senior officials of the party to craft the party’s strategy, as well as manifesto. We jointly wrote the manifesto of the party together as members of the strategy committee of the party. “He is a man of intellect, brilliance; a unifier, a detribalized Nigerian; who has shown us leadership as chairman of the National Economic Council. “It was under Vice President Osinbajo’s leadership that our Paris Cub refund, that was deducted in 2005, was finally paid to all the States, and we are all beneficiaries. It was under his leadership that recommendations were made to bail out 27 states, that, in 2015 were unable to pay salaries. I can go on and on to list the qualifications and virtues of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo." Urging the delegates to “vote for the best person that will take Nigeria to that promise land,” Governor El-Rufai added: “In Kaduna State we are people of honour. So, please remember that the future of Nigeria is at stake. Nigeria is at a critical crossroads and the choices we make in 2023 will, to large extent, determine whether this country progresses rapidly to achieve its manifest destiny or not. "We must put all our sentiments and personal interests aside, and vote for the best person that will take Nigeria to that promise land.” Also, in Kebbi, the State Deputy Governor, Samaila Yombe, stated the “need for continuity in government.” Yombe said, “President Muhammadu Buhari is our president and will be for 8 years (by May, 2023). He has an able backbone in the person of the vice president. “We will now stand on both feet to make sure of that continuity, and the pledge that all of us have given here is an assurance, Mr. Vice President, that we will see you there by God’s grace.” Also speaking, the Kebbi APC Chairman, Alhaji Muhammadu Kana, noted the Vice President’s efforts in ensuring a peaceful and united country. “Our vice president, we wish you well, we wish you success,” he added. At his meeting with delegates in the States, Vice President Osinbajo noted that Nigeria is at a crucial stage in her history where continuity is government is needful to ensure the completion of many ongoing development projects started by the Buhari administration, and also further progress for the country. During his courtesy call to the Palace of the Emir of Gwandu and Chairman, Kebbi State Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, yesterday, Prof. Osinbajo said, “I’ve served as vice president for the past seven years under the able leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari. During that seven-year period, I have had the unique opportunity to work with an open and transparent president. “My experience is crucial, especially in governing a country of our size. This is why I decided to put myself forward to serve as president. There are other people vying for that position (of the president); several competent Nigerians and competent members of our party, the APC. We all know that all power belongs to the Almighty God. He is the one who determines who rules; we can only hope and pray and put ourselves forward. “I believe strongly that the stage that our country is at, is one that requires continuity of the sort that will enable us achieve great results.” Thanking the Emir for his kindness, generosity, and counsel, the Vice President said “the result of your counsels has given us the successes that our government has had over the years.” He noted several ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline, the Lagos-Kano Standard Gauge Railway, Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri rail project, among many others. The VP added that, “It makes perfect sense if I am given the opportunity of concluding those projects and doing so many other things, I will do so.” Similarly, at his meetings with delegates in Kebbi, Prof. Osinbajo restated that “It is God who gives power, only God can put a man or woman in position, and if God puts you in a position, nobody can change it.” He added, “I offered myself as presidential aspirant of our party, because I know that by the grace of God, if God helps me to be elected, we will change our country for the common man, for the politician, for the rich, poor, young, women, children, and the old. Let us work together, your votes will determine the future of our country.” “This is a complex country, but it is a country that must remain united, that must remain secure, and we must improve the economy for the benefit of millions of young people and all Nigerians.” Also, Prof. Osinbajo also stated that there is room for improvement in the areas of security, economy, and technology. For instance, he noted that ‘the right infrastructure for technology is broadband connectivity, and we are putting that together; we intend to have that broadband connectivity for all in coming years, so that we can expand opportunity for business, especially for young people.” On the ongoing revamping of the country’s security architecture by the Buhari administration, the VP noted that “at the end of the day, we will be able to tackle our present challenges, but we must be prepared to deal with future security challenges also.” On the Social Investment Programmes, the VP said, “we are going to expand the social investment programmes to become a full-scale social welfare programme. We must also ensure that our young people are employed, engaged and we must have a plan for them.” The VP, who fielded various questions on security, economy, young people, women, governance, politics, social investments, etc., also received firm endorsements from delegates. Prof. Osinbajo was accompanied on the trips by former Kano State Governor and Senator representing Kano South senatorial district, Senator Kabiru Gaya; the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu; Dr. Bashir Gwandu, Alhaji Yerima Gobir, among other dignitaries and senior government officials. *Laolu Akande* *Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity* *Office of the Vice President* *23rd May, 2022* |

And he emphasised, in his remarks, the importance of Nigeria's unity for the realization of its great potential. “One of the most important things for our country is that we must be united, there is no other way. The reason is because the greatness of this country depends on our numbers and diversity. "If you look at other African countries, many of them are smaller than states in Nigeria. This is a country that works best when we are together. Despite religion and tribe, every one of us must come together. “I look forward to ensuring that our country becomes one that is truly great. But it can only realise its true potential, if we all work together to achieve that potential. “I know that this country can be united, because the people of this country want to be united and work together. If we are united in this country, everything will work easily. For me, one of the most important things is fairness and balance,” Prof. Osinbajo told the delegates." On his arrival at the helipad in Zamfara State, the Vice President received a robust welcome from the state led by Governor Bello Matawalle; his deputy, Hassan Nasiha; as well as former governor Abdul’aziz Yari, among other prominent state government officials. "These have earned you admiration and support of many Nigerians who support your aspiration to contest for the leadership of our dear country. “Your Excellency, we wish you well, we pray to Almighty Allah to help you attain your desire to be President of Nigeria. We wish you success.” Similarly, the Emir of Katsina, HRH Abdulmuminu Kabir Usman, CFR, said to the VP: “Take it from me, we are behind you; we support you. Someone with experience is a better person than someone who is very new to the administration; so, you are on board already. We will continue to pray for you. By the Grace of God, you are going to make it; we shall pray for you with all our hearts.” In the same vein, Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle and the former governor, Abdulaziz Yari, among other stakeholders, told the VP that they decided to come together to welcome him to the State to show their respect for him and support for his presidential aspiration. Praising the VP’s leadership qualities, his dedication and service to the country, as well as passion for its development, Governor Matawalle told the Vice President, “You are a man of the people,” while noting that the State is fully behind his bid and will support him. *5 Takeaways From Osinbajo’s Osogbo Carnival* 1. He is APC’s most popular candidate: If there were still any lingering doubts about this, the carnivalesque reception in Osogbo yesterday has cleared them all! The crowd of all age groups nearly overwhelmed the VP’s motorcade in the Oja Oba market place, at the Ataoja’s palace, and at the state government house in Oke Fia where they waited till the consultation with delegates was over, to pick up where they left off! 2. The Governor’s absence changed nothing: Osun is a state many political analysts have predicted may go either way, owing to the fact the sitting Governor is not only an ally but a close relative of another APC aspirant. But did any of this matter to the crowd roaring “PYO! PYO!! INCOMING! INCOMING!!” as his motorcade slowly made its way through? Your answer is in the pictures from the event. 3. A baptism took place: I noted from pictures posted online before Osinbajo’s arrival, that there were about 4 people from the “other camp” fully clad in the infinity-sign regalia and strategically positioned, apparently with the aim to embarrass and intimidate PYO. But even they were captured paying rapt attention as he spoke and as soon as he was done, they willingly filed up in what was a long queue waiting to get a handshake and a picture with Osinbajo. 4. His show of sportsmanship: flashback to a day before in Rivers, Osinbajo said during his consultation, “There is no need for conflict of any kind, especially among presidential aspirants. All of us, who are all presidential aspirants, have either worked together or eaten together at one place or the other. We are aspirants today, but only one person will emerge, and we must be prepared to work with that person.” This he gracefully demonstrated as he embraced and shook hands, wearing a broad smile, with these 4 men who apparently were at the venue to make their own statement. If this isn’t the greatest show of sportsmanship in politics, I don’t know what is. 5. Traditional rulers are in sync on Osinbajo’s ambition: it was not from a Nollywood scene, the great Oba of Benin (and his council of chiefs) really did say he moved a trip so as to receive and listen to the VP because “I am a great admirer.” The Emir of Bauchi said if he was not an Emir, he would work on his campaign team! Obong of Calabar in his words “we are praying that you pick up the ticket, we will support you”. The Ataoja of Osogbo was also not left out yesterday, “Osinbajo, we know you are capable and very intelligent, when you get there, come to our aid.” These are only a few of the Royal fathers who have spoken glowingly of the VP since his consultation journey kicked off. |
*Osinbajo leaves Osun wanting more* In Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the chants of PYO, PYO, PYO and Incoming, Incoming, Incoming rent the air as Vice President Yemi Osinbajo acknowledged cheers from left, right and centre. Needless to say that his security team was having a hard time controlling to the crowd, they kept on breaching protocol as the chemistry between the Vice President and the people was on full display. After navigating the crowd, the VP held his unique delegate meeting with APC members. It was just another opportunity for the VP to outline his plans for Nigeria and his party, the All Progressives Congress. Call it an encounter of conversion and you wouldn't be wrong. There were a number of new converts in the hall. They were perplexed, intrigued, and even mesmerized at how the VP showed leadership, and how he answered questions thrown at him. While the meeting was ongoing, one would have thought, the chanting crowd outside would have dissipated. But no, they were in it for the long haul. Dem dey kampe! I'd say it was some triumphant outing in Osun State. |
