ACM10: The catchword there is NITTY-GRITTY. Even Physiotherapists/Nurses/Radiographers do study these courses too, but not in details. Does pharmacy students do practicals with cadaver? I mean dissecting cadaver region by region. It is only Anatomy/MedSurg students that does it.

Moreover, how can you treat a patient without the knowledge of the PATHOLOGY behind the disease. Don't you think that this defiency in knowledge can make a difference between life and death?
In my year 2, I did anatomy (histology and gross) so we dealt wit cadaver and pathology is a course under pharmmicrobiology in 300level. Get your facts right ok

joker5180: I see nothing wrong in health professionals striving to improve their skills but I always doubt the sincerity of doing so if there a hidding secrete to it.
No nigerian university award " doctor of ............" as first degree except in the case of optometry ( which is a desaster).
The degree " doctor of .......," is ONLY awarded to students who undergo a postgraduate training in form of PhD.
People who study MEDICINE AND SURGERY are awarded MB,BS( bachelor of medicine, bachelor of surgery) by universities. The title "Dr" is given by their regulatory body.
An additional year doesnt equate to a PhD.
They just want parade themselves as "doctors" in the society and nothing else.
Olodo, who said Pharm D is PHd (doctorate degree). I won't explain again so use google to educate yourself.

Pennywise: Sharrap. U dont understand what is at play here. Ur leaders are using u as a pon in a game of chess. They dont care about you or the pharmacy profession.

@zeezabee this is a response to you too.
why quote me under another post. Anyways whatever rocks your boat. I won't argue with a blind man

Mr. Obayaya, now I won't argue with you. I will only quote people that understand what we are saying here. Thanks

Pennywise: Do u know each time a doctor enters the theater he is putting his certificate on the line? Meanwhile pharmacists screw up prescriptions all the time and then replace a wrongly dispensed drug with a smile? No courts. No judge ever get to hear.
Who told you no court? Deal with nigeria government for bad regulations. Both the pharmacist and doctor are licensed and belongs to an association that monitor them. So you forgot the rophynol case, the my pikin syrup case. So don't sound pharmacist certificate and license are not put on line. If a pharmacist does any wrong, he/she will be dealt with so same with doctors also. Both certficate are on the line ok.
HealthRe: Furore Over Doctor Of Pharmacy Degree In Nigerian Universities. by zeezahbee(f): 11:26am On Jun 29, 2014
Pennywise: It is not in doubt that Nigerian pharmacists need a more didactic curriculum to become better professionals even if it means increasing study yrs to 6.

But that doesnt entitle them and optometrists to the prefix 'Dr'. Architects spend 6yrs in sch, yet they are not addressed with the prefix 'Dr'. In the US pharmD or not pharmacists are not called doctor sb except in Nigeria.

Why the fixation with the title? A lot of people doctors or not see a sinister motive esp when viewed against the background of the unending acrimony in the health sector.
Now I can understand you MR. Penny. You think pharmacist want the pharm D or the Dr title because of the 6years it will take to get a pharm D lol, how will architect be called doctor because of 6yrs. Like seriously, You are wrong. In the US, pharmacist are called Doctor, they are entitled to it, if you call the pharmacist or doctor, they are cool. Pennywise I can see you no nothing about what you are saying. Do your research well
HealthRe: Furore Over Doctor Of Pharmacy Degree In Nigerian Universities. by zeezahbee(f): 11:14am On Jun 29, 2014
ACM10: Are you serious?! You want doctors to earn the same salary as the pharmacist who sit all day long in an air-conditioned room dispensing the prescriptions of the doctors? It will be possible if only they come to the ward and get needle pricks from the HIV positive patients or confront Lassa fever patients. There is no place in the world where the pharmacists earn as much as doctors in a hospital. So your suggestion is dead on arrival.
Come to think of it, so you think pharmacy is about prescriptions only. Am sorry for you. As for the salary, I won't talk about that.
HealthRe: Furore Over Doctor Of Pharmacy Degree In Nigerian Universities. by zeezahbee(f): 11:06am On Jun 29, 2014
ige101: You think its all about the title?think again,do you think if the Medical Doc salarry is not twice that of a pharm they would be agitating for that?
Getting a Pharm D is same as B.pharm, just that you get more clinical experience with pharm D. No one is asking for same salary as the doctor, even in the US that offer pharm D, the doctors salary is still higher than the pharmacists. Pharm D doesn't mean they want to get same salary, get that right ok.

obayaya: Well maybe I'm wrong for saying the B.Pharm degree is more popular in the US. But I wasn't wrong in my assertion that the Pharm.D degree is a professional/post graduate degree of some sort. And a bachelors of science degree in a relevant field is a pre requisite for that degree.

And you guys a clamoring for a Pharm.D degree as a first degree here?

Oh Please...

All I see here is a desperate attempt to be like others and be considered equal which is wrong.
Mr. Obayaya, sorry are you a Doctor or pharmacist? like seriously you know nothing about what you have been saying since here. Make use of wikipedia or google to understand more before you post anything. Thanks
HealthRe: Furore Over Doctor Of Pharmacy Degree In Nigerian Universities. by zeezahbee(f): 10:54am On Jun 29, 2014
stefikal: And some of the posts simply make me sad.

Ignorance is really a disease I suppose.

Who ever said Pharm D is about the 'title'?

What ever happened to the main idea- Pharmaceutical care?

Pharmacy practice has evolved from dispensing of drugs to Pharmaceutical care and this is an avenue to improve pharmacists.

If the security system in the world adopted an innovation to improve security services and then the Nigerian Police Force chooses to follow this innovation, does it mean they are simply up for titles?

What is wrong with pharmacists-in-training being equipped so they can stand with their counterparts from any part of the world(not medical doctors) and not bring shame to Nigeria.

Is it a bad thing if Nigeria improves?

I don't just get the concept, y'all claiming that we don't go through medical school. Says who? I'm a pharmacist-in-training and I'm in medical school.

The problem with Nigerians is that we all want to pass our points across even when we realise we could be misleading others.

I still get irked when I meet people and they ask, "What's your course of study?" When I reply "Pharmacy" with the inward joy that I'm part of a noble profession, I get disappointed when the next question comes as, "So you want to graduate and sell drugs in a shop?"

Really? Pharmacy is more encompassing than that, and Pharm. D doesn't limit one to hospital practice. Are we trying to insinuate that the countries that have implemented this programme do not have pharmacists working in Industries, in Academia, in Research and all.

Of course they do, please Nigerians let's embrace progress, Pharm. D is not just for the improvement of the pharmacists but also for the patients, the sole aim is getting better.
You took the words from my mouth. thumbs up

Doc. Adray:
I think it is a welcome development.

The Faculties of Pharmacy within all Nigerian universities, should be accredited and their curriculum/course outline updated to cover a wider 'clinical' practice coverage...
Thank you sensible Doc

ACM10: Why are you trying to appear clever by latching on one aspect of my comment? Do you think that thorough knowledge of Pharmacology prepares you enough to treat patients? What about Pathology? Can you treat a patient without knowing the pathological basis of the disease? You are picking my points selectively. That's a sign of intellectual weakness.
Get your info right, we do pharmaceutical microbiology so pathology comes in.

University of Ibadan

Problem is that in my field many schools don't offer masters. Just phd. Even those that offer masters will tell you point blank that they only fund phd students.

But a few offer master courses with funding so I'm trying those ones
You are right, most pharmaceutical, biomedicals want PHD not msc dis days, some schools told my friend the same but if you search well you will get for Msc but with your GRE and cgpa and applying early and package your Sop and every every requirement well, you should get PHD. Me I don't have time sha , still team Pharm D lol

GPA 3.3/4 (WES unofficial igpa )

I hope this is OK. These science based courses can be very funny. I think I'll apply to a wide range of schools too maybe that will help.

Naplex is suspended for now. And some of my friends were going to spend money to buy books (expensive) and ship it to naija. The exam can't even be written in naija sef. O pari. Looool
So you can see, when I tell people I want to go for pharm D, they be like why wasting another 2yrs but they don't know pharmacy get wahala, without license, you can't practice. If you want to practice in naija, you can stick to you B.pharm but if you want yankee then you need to transfer or take lincensing exam (expensive, no assurance).

bbdd: I just read online I have to repeat internship if after passing naplex and Fpgee if i want to practice with B.pharm.

And different states have different licensure bodies that can act independently

Na wa ooooooo. Lol
So you don't know before, brother, that pharmacy licensure exam na long thing, I don't have time for iranu. Get into masters, pHd or PHarm D with funding than wasting my money on very hard exam that just one out of 100 international pharmacist pass, then you will still do one year internship again no matter how long you have practiced in your home country. Brother, just go ahead with the PHD or Msc plan, when you get to US, you can then decide how you want to practice.

bbdd: Hi. Thanks for the kind wishes and reassurance.
I'm interested in pharmacy administration. I'm not really a lab person.
I've checked some pharmacy administration/health outcomes department scores. They want >300 Gre and 3. 0 GPA but you know these schools usually admit students that get way more than that.

Can't you just take naplex and Fpgee in the US and practice with your b Pharm?
NAPLEX : north america pharmacist licensure examination
FPGEE :the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalence Examination.
It doesn't add up my brother. Licensing exams is expensive, will take months/yr if written in nigeria, gosh, I can't go through that stress, most times they tell you to write PCAT to know your weakness and strength, my guy the procedure is too much from one stage to another and spending money with no hope of even getting visa. Its better to go to the US for masters or pharmD and do those things than sitting in naija and writing licensing exam, I don't have that time. I prefer to get my pharmD as age is still on my side and I don't really have much clinical experience here than to sit my ass in naija and waste money and time on licensing exam. I have people that eXam and still failed or are still battling with one stage, our drug(brand name, generic), disease state is different from the US.
Read this links to understand
http://overseaspharmacist.com/foreign-pharmacy-career/united-states-pharmacists-jobs.htm
http://www.pharmacy.umaryland.edu/admissions/pharmd/applying/internationpharms.html
So my decision to transfer for pharm D is to avoid spending excess money and with no 100% of getting licensed but taking the pharm D for 2-3yrs and getting to work straight as a pharm in US
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part5 by zeezahbee(f): 11:53am On Jun 28, 2014
bimbola85: Bro,that's not how WES do their evaluation. That link is just for mathematical conversion like 3.67/5.0 calculated on 4point scale just by 3.67/5 multiply by 4 which is not how WES do their evaluation.

To have an idea of WES evaluation, go to WES website and make use of their free evaluation tool.

Mine is 3.67/5.0 and after I made use of the evaluation tool on WES website it gives me 3.23/4.0.

Someone even told me it might be higher by the time WES officially evaluated my transcript because his GNS(general studies) as it's called in my school was excluded from his evaluated grades.

Why I believed mine also will be higher is because I have low grades in my GNS and would be glad if it's excluded when WES complete the evaluation.
Bimbola , you grad from OOU ?? Woow, yaaay!! Greatest OOUite. Which year , campus and course ? Tell me

If you check my posts, I only use the website to evaluate gpa so as to have an idea of what range your will fall in and I said and I have always been saying that WES evaluation works in different ways and it also depends on your grade(ABCDEF), your school etc

That's correct juntod but after WES evaluation its possible its goes a bit high like 2.7-3.0, well after studying WES evaluation I found out if you have more As, you evaluation won't be that high just normal, if you have more Cs then you get to roll high because a nigeria C is a US B.

You are definitely right juntod. The guy has a nice GRE and wonderful undergrad Cgpa so he can go ahead with PHD, he might be lucky to get a good offer.
