After 171 World Cup goals, choosing the ten
best is no easy task.

First, one has to ask: what makes a great
goal? How, where, and when it’s scored are
important. Headed goals or goals from set
pieces receive higher marks in the “how”
department. Likewise, goals from outside
the box or tough angles also add to the
greatness of a goal.

When the goal is scored also played very
important role in these rankings. Scoring a
golazo while up four goals is great, but
scoring one to tie the match in the final
minutes is much more memorable.
Keep these factors in mind as you enjoy the
10 best goals from the 2014 FIFA World
Cup.

10. Mexico’s Giovanni dos Santos vs.
Netherlands

Giovanni dos Santos’s first international
goal in two years came couldn’t have come
at a better time. Just minutes into the
second half of Mexico’s Round of 16 match
against the Netherlands, the forward
chested down a headed clearance amongst a
crowd of three Dutch defenders. But after
fending off a challenge from Daley Blind,
Dos Santos used an inkling of space to
launch a shot across goal and past the
outstretched hands of Jasper Cillessen.

The goal opened the scoring and, for awhile,
looked to be the match winner. While it
wasn’t the case in the end, it certainly gave
Mexican fans hope and Dutch fans pause for
most of the half.

9. Switzerland’s Haris Seferovic vs.
Ecuador

While the finish itself isn’t one of the ten
best, the build-up play certainly is.
The final box scores shows Swiss forward
Haris Seferovic scoring in the 93rd minute
to give Switzerland the 2-1 victory over
Ecuador. But just seconds prior to the goal,
Ecuador had a golden opportunity at the
other end cut out by a Valon Berami slide
tackle.

Berami returned to his feet and led the
break upfield (despite the Ecuador foul and
advantage played). Left back Ricardo
Rodriguez delivered a perfect cross inside
the six yard box to Seferovic, who buried it
near post and sealed the victory for the
Swiss.

Simply put: the Swiss went from earning
one point from the match, to zero points, to
three in less than a minute. That’s a top
goal.

8. Brazil’s David Luiz vs. Colombia

Before David Luiz’s nightmares began in
semifinal, he was actually having quite the
tournament. The PSG-bound center back
was living up to his $91 million USD
transfer fee to the best of his abilities,
scoring his first and second international
goals in consecutive matches.

And what a second goal it was.

Luiz teed up a free kick from about 30
yards out and sent it into the top right
corner of goal past keeper David Ospina. It
gave the host nation a 2-0 advantage over
Colombia, which would soon after get cut
to 2-1. Brazil was grateful for their
versatile defender, if only for the remainder
of the match.

7. Argentina’s Lionel Messi vs. Iran

After 91 minutes of play, Iran was on the
way to their biggest result in World Cup
history. Sure, it was only a draw, but it
was a draw with one of the World Cup
favorites in a match that produced a few
scoring chances for them.

But Lionel Messi had other plans and, with
a quick cut left, shattered the underdog’s
dreams with a beautifully curled shot from
outside the box. The Iranians immediately
went to ground in dejection. Messi and the
mostly-Argentinian crowd went ballistic.
Just another day at the office for the
world’s best.

6. Netherlands’s Wesley Sneijder vs.
Mexico

After dos Santos’s goal, the Dutch were on
their way to a disappointing Round of 16
exit. But from a corner, Klaas-Jan
Huntelaar headed the ball into space, where
Wesley Sneijder scorched the ball into the
left corner.

While the degree of difficulty wasn’t
particularly high, the timing of the
equalizer — in the 88th minute — couldn’t
have been better. From there, the Dutch
would eventually earn the victory off a
penalty in added time.

5. Germany’s Mario Gotze vs. Argentina

The lone goal in the World Cup final had to
be on the list somewhere, but a finish this
late (114th minute) and this clinical can’t
simply get tacked onto the bottom.

The fact that it was a connection between
two of Germany’s subs speaks to the team’s
depth. Mario Gotze chested down an Andre
Schurrle cross at the edge of the six-yard
box and coolly volleyed it into the opposite
corner.

The goal not only gave Germany their
fourth World Cup title. After three straight
World Cup semifinal exits, Germany finally
reached the grand stage and cemented this
generation’s place in international soccer
lore.

Not sleeping enough and not sleeping well is
not OK. As a matter of fact, there is quite a
price to pay. It may surprise you to learn that
chronic sleep deprivation, for whatever
reason, significantly affects your health,
performance, safety, and pocketbook.
There are many causes of sleep deprivation.
The stresses of daily life may intrude upon
our ability to sleep well, or perhaps we trade
sleep for more work or play. We may have
medical or mental-health conditions that
disrupt our sleep, and be well aware that we
are sleep-deprived.
However, it is critically important to realize
that sleep deprivation is very often due to
unrecognized sleep disorders. After a typical
night's sleep, you may not feel restored and
refreshed and be sleepy during the day, but
be totally unaware that you are sleep-
deprived or have a sleep disorder. You might
think, "It's just the stress of work or the
kids," or you might have "always felt this
way" and had no idea that you should feel
differently. This lack of awareness compounds
the consequences, because so many people
remain undiagnosed for years.

That said, let's look at the consequences of
sleep deprivation.
In the short term:
Decreased Performance and Alertness:
Sleep deprivation induces significant
reductions in performance and alertness.
Reducing your nighttime sleep by as little as
one and a half hours for just one night
could result in a reduction of daytime
alertness by as much as 32%.
Memory and Cognitive Impairment:
Decreased alertness and excessive daytime
sleepiness impair your memory and your
cognitive ability -- your ability to think and
process information.
Stress Relationships: Disruption of a bed
partner's sleep due to a sleep disorder may
cause significant problems for the
relationship (for example, separate
bedrooms, conflicts, moodiness, etc.).
Poor Quality of Life: You might, for
example, be unable to participate in certain
activities that require sustained attention,
like going to the movies, seeing your child
in a school play, or watching a favorite TV
show.
Occupational Injury: Excessive sleepiness
also contributes to a greater than twofold
higher risk of sustaining an occupational
injury.
Automobile Injury: The National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
estimates conservatively that each year
drowsy driving is responsible for at least
100,000 automobile crashes, 71,000
injuries, and 1,550 fatalities.

The good news for many of the disorders that
cause sleep deprivation is that after risk
assessment, education, and treatment,
memory and cognitive deficits improve and
the number of injuries decreases.
In the long term, the clinical consequences of
untreated sleep disorders are large indeed.
They are associated with numerous, serious
medical illnesses, including:
High blood pressure
Heart attack
Heart failure
Stroke
Obesity
Psychiatric problems, including depression
and other mood disorders
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
Mental impairment
Fetal and childhood growth retardation
Injury from accidents
Disruption of bed partner's sleep quality
Poor quality of life
Studies show an increased mortality risk for
those reporting less than either six or seven
hours per night. One study found that
reduced sleep time is a greater mortality risk
than smoking, high blood pressure, and heart
disease. Sleep disturbance is also one of the
leading predictors of institutionalization in the
elderly, and severe insomnia triples the
mortality risk in elderly men.
Remarkably, sleep loss may also be a
contributing factor to obesity. John
Winkelman, MD, PhD, medical director of the
Sleep Health Center at Brigham and Women's
Hospital and assistant professor of psychiatry
at Harvard Medical School sums up this
finding up nicely: "What most people do not
realize is that better sleep habits may be
instrumental to the success of any weight
management plan." And Michael Thorpy, MD,
director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at
Montefiore Medical Center in New York adds,
"Any American making a resolution to lose
weight ... should probably consider a parallel
commitment for getting more sleep."

It is also important to realize the huge scope
and prevalence of these disorders; more than
85 sleep disorders are recognized by the
American Sleep Disorders Association,
affecting more than 70 million Americans. Up
to one-third of Americans have symptoms of
insomnia; however, less than 10% of those are
identified by primary-care doctors. Sleep-
related breathing disorders represent a
spectrum of abnormalities that range from
simple snoring to sleep apnea (repeated
episodes of cessation of breathing during
sleep). As highly prevalent as they are, most
cases remain undiagnosed and untreated.
Chronic snoring, for example, is associated
with an increased incidence of heart and
brain-related diseases. It is present in about
45% of the U.S. population; up to half of
those have sleep apnea.
The prevalence of sleep apnea is on par
with diabetes and asthma. More than 20
million Americans -- 24% of adult men and
9% of adult women -- are estimated to have
some degree of obstructive sleep apnea.
Only a fraction have been diagnosed and
treated.
Sleep apnea is a primary risk factor for
high blood pressure; as many as 40% of
those people are undiagnosed and
untreated for high blood pressure. Effective
treatment of sleep apnea in patients with
high blood pressure leads to a substantial
reduction in stroke risk.
Patients with moderate to severe sleep
apnea perform as poorly as drunk drivers
and have up to a 15-fold increased risk of
motor vehicle accidents.
With the wealth of information and treatment
options available for sleep deprivation, much
of the suffering, illness from the many related
diseases, increase in accident rates, and
effects on productivity, performance,
concentration, and memory can be avoided.
Increased awareness is the first step, for us
individually and the health care community.
Some researchers suggest that sleep
deprivation should be recognized with the
same seriousness that has been associated
with the societal impact of alcohol.

The All Progressives Congress (APC)
has described as utterly callous and
insensitive the ongoing campaign by
the so-called GEJites, a pro-Jonathan
group, for the President’s re-election
right at the same spot where the
‘BringBackOurGirls’ campaigners have
been staging daily protests demanding
the safe return of the over 200 school
girls.
In a statement issued in Abuja
yesterday by its National Publicity
Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the
party said the message being conveyed
to all Nigerians is that the re-election
of President Goodluck Jonathan takes
priority over anything else, including
the security and welfare of the
citizens.
It said, “Were this not to be so, no
responsible group will choose this
time, when over 200 schoolgirls have
been missing for over 80 days and the
terror group Boko Haram is daily
killing and maiming Nigerians, to
launch a misguided re-election
campaign for the President.
“If their daughters were among the
missing school girls, will they be
launching a political campaign for re-
election rather than pushing for the
girls’ release?
“To show their contempt for decency
and as if they were intent on inflicting
more pain on the parents and
guardians of the missing girls, they
decided to position their campaign
instrument, wheel-mounted electronic
billboards, right at the Unity Fountain
in Abuja where committed and
patriotic Nigerians have been holding
their own daily campaign for the safe
return of the girls.”
APC said much as it may deny, it is
clear that the Jonathan Administration,
that has surpassed itself in sheer
cluelessness in providing purposeful
leadership to stop the daily carnage in
the country and ensuring the return of
the missing girls, has apparently been
secretly funding different groups to
campaign for it.
It said, “First there is the Protectors of
Nigerian Posterity, then the Goodluck
Initiative for Transformation 2015 and
now the GEJites.
“With the expensive newspaper,
television and Social Media adverts
that these nebulous groups are
running, it is clear they are being
financed from a bottomless war chest,
to which taxpayers have been
unwilling contributors.
“It is sad that a government that
apparently cannot adequately fund the
war on terror, a government that has
lost the initiative to terrorists, a
government that cannot provide jobs
for its teeming army of unemployed, a
government that is running Nigeria
aground has suddenly found huge
funds to engage in a re-election
campaign that is going nowhere,
touting tokenism as achievements.”
It said if the administration does not
endorse the callousness and
insensitivity of the groups, it should
publicly dissociate itself from them
and then call them to order.
Meanwhile, APC has raised the alarm
that the Federal Government is losing
the war on terror, which has
progressively gotten worse since the
abduction of the Chibok girls over 80
days ago.
It said, “Almost on a daily basis now,
these terrorists have been striking at
places and times of their own choosing,
even as they are becoming more
emboldened to carry their terror
campaign right into the heart of the
nation’s capital, Abuja. Innocent
Nigerians are being killed and maimed
in high numbers across several states
“Instead of cashing in on the global
outcry that followed the abduction of
the over 200 Chibok girls to galvanize
national and international action, not
just support, the Jonathan
Administration has been chasing
shadows, pointing accusing fingers at
innocent groups and people; harassing
the media and curtailing individual
freedoms
“One misguided pro-Jonathan
commentator even said the attacks are
occurring in states under the control
of the APC, as if Bauchi and Kaduna
are APC states.
“We have said it before and we will
repeat it here: Boko Haram is a clear
and present danger to all Nigerians:
Christians and Muslims; Men, women
and children; The rich and the poor as
well as People of all political leanings
and of all ethnic groups.
“When they want to throw their
bombs, they do not ask if supporters or
opponents of Jonathan are there. They
do not ask if supporters of PDP or APC
are there. They just kill, maim and
destroy indiscriminately.”

The United Nations Special Envoy for
Global Education and former Prime
Minister of the United Kingdom,
Gordon Brown, has called on his
government to send troops to Nigeria
to help secure the release of the
Chibok schoolgirls abducted on April
14.
Speaking during a debate on
Wednesday at the House of Commons,
the former British Prime Minister said
in view of the possibility that the more
than 200 kidnapped girls might have
been divided into groups and hidden
in separate places, his government
should send the UK forces to assist
Nigeria’s army.
Brown said, “These wholly innocent
young girls—Lugwa Abuga, Rhoda
John, Comfort Amos, Maryamu Yakubu
and 200 others—are now incarcerated
in the forest areas of Borno State.
“If the girls have been dispersed to a
number of different places, a rescue
mission for one group would
immediately put the other groups at
risk. That is the dilemma that
confronts the Nigerian Government, as
I understand it.
“That is why they need additional
support to monitor what is happening
and, if it is necessary to intervene, (we
should send) the troops, security
services and the air cover to do so.”
Jim Shannon, a member of the House,
told Brown that the legislators were
concerned about the ongoing violence
in Nigeria and the continued
incarceration of the schoolgirls. He,
however, expressed doubts over
Nigeria’s reaction to the insurgency.

Amidst shouts of “yes”, the delegates to
the National Conference yesterday
approved the creation of 18 more
states, which would be shared among
the six geo-political zones.
However, the conference approved the
creation of one more state for the
South-East, which is going to be
different from the 18 new states.
The new state for the South-East was
based on the fact that out of the six
zones in the country, only the zone has
five states while others, except North-
West, which has seven states, have six
states.
It was agreed that the new 18 states
would be shared in such a way among
the six zones that no zone would have
more state than the other.
The proposed states are Aba, from the
present Abia State, Katagum from
Bauchi State, Ijebu from Ogun State,
Amana from former Sardauna
Province, Apa from Benue State,
Anioma State from Delta State,
Savannah from Borno, Etiti from
South-East, Njaba/Anim from
Anambra and Imo States, Gurara from
Kaduna, Ghari from Kano State, Adada,
New Oyo from Oyo State, Orachi from
Rivers State, Ogoja from Cross River
State and Kanji from Kebbi and Niger
States.
It was agreed that the two states from
both the South-South and South-West
would be determined later.
They rejected a motion that the
number of states in Nigeria should not
be more than 55.
However, a delegate to the conference
who is also a Senior Advocate of
Nigeria, Femi Falana condemned the
decision to create more states.
He said the action was at variance with
the decisions and resolutions earlier
taken by the conference on the need
by government to cut cost.
“Having regard to the several
resolutions of the national conference
on the need to reduce the costs of
governance I found the
recommendation for the creation of
additional 18 states rather
contradictory,” Falana said.
On states that want to merge, the
conference said that a referendum
should be conducted in each of the
states that wants to merge with 65 per
cent of the eligible voters in each of
those states approving merger and
that the National Assembly by
resolutions passed by a single majority
of membership, approves of the
merger.
On the running of local government,
the delegates said that states were
free to create or reduce local
governments.
It was agreed that all government
officials must use made in Nigeria
cars.
The National Conference also
yesterday voted that the presidency
shall rotate among the six geo-political
zones of the country.
They also said the rotation should be
between the northern and southern
regions.
This was one of the decisions taken by
the delegates at their plenary while
considering reports of the Committee
on Political Restructuring and Forms of
Government.
But the conference failed to list the
order through which the office would
rotate.
The delegates also said the six geo-
political zones be constitutionalised.
Though it was also agreed that the
states were free to have their
constitutions, but the request to
change the name of Adamawa State to
Gongola State, was overwhelmingly
rejected by the delegates.
It was also agreed by the delegates
that in the case of the death, or
impeachment of the President or he
becomes incapacitated, his deputy
would no longer assume office
automatically.
Rather, they said that, the Vice
President shall only act as President
for a period of 90 days within which
election will hold.
“In the absence of the death of the
president, the Vice President shall act
as president for a period of 90 days
within which an election to the office
of the President shall be held,” the
conference said.
They argued that since the office of
the President would be rotated among
the six geo-political zones, it would be
unfair to allow the Vice President to
take the turn of other zones by
automatically assuming power.
It would be recalled that President
Goodluck Jonathan assumed office
following the death of President
Umaru Yar’Adua in 2010.
Some prominent northerners said it
was wrong for Jonathan to have again
run for the office of the president since
Yar’Adua did not complete the
expected eight year tenure allocated
for the northern part of the country.
The delegates rejected that the
President should run for a single term
of six years, and favoured the present
arrangement of two terms of four
years.
It was also agreed that the President
and his deputy should run on a joint
ticket, thereby rejecting the
recommendation that the President
should pick his deputy among the
members of the National Assembly
after he must have won.
The conference also supported the
unicameral form of government. This
implies that there would still be the
Senate and the House of
Representatives.
It was also agreed that the office of the
Governor shall rotate among the three
senatorial districts in the state while
the office of the chairman of a local
government council shall rotate within
the local government areas.
The conference also suggested that
that the Independent National
Electoral Commission should divide
the council to two or three equal parts
as the case maybe for the purpose of
electing the local government
chairman.
