EducationJAMB Fixes July 1 For UTME For 85,000 Candidates With Issues by zinachidi(op): 6:53am On Jun 21, 2017
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has fixed Saturday, July 1 to conduct supplementary Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, for 85,000 candidates. The board’s Head, Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin, announced the date in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja. According to him, the examination, which is for candidates who registered late and those with related issues, will be spread across some Computer Based Testing (CBT) centres. “Following an enlarged management meeting of the JAMB, the supplementary 2017 UTME has been fixed to hold on Saturday, July 1. “No fewer than 85,000 candidates are scheduled to write the examination. “Affected candidates have been notified through text messages.

“By this notice, they are advised to check their e- mail and profile for the schedule of their examination or visit the board’s website for their status,’’ Mr. Benjamin said. According to him, candidates will soon be requested to print their e-slip for details such as date, venue and time of the examination. The board noted that candidates, who are not listed for the supplementary, would not be communicated with; while those, whose results are withheld, would reflect in their profiles, which have been updated. The board also advised rescheduled candidates to comport themselves and be of good behaviour to avoid the circumstance that earlier necessitated the cancellation of their previous examination. “Many of the candidates rescheduled for this examination enjoy this privilege because of the board’s principles of equality and inclusiveness.

“It is better to let 100 offenders go free than to punish one innocent person. “The board will enhance its monitoring of the examination as it would not compromise its sanctity.” The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that 1.7 million candidates registered for the 2017 UTME in 633 centres across the country. The examination was conducted from May 13 to May 20 but the board cancelled the results of more than 50,000 candidates. It also delisted 48 Computer Based Testing centres over what was described as huge and organised malpractices. (NAN)

“I boldly introduced myself as Evans. Initially, they were shocked but later they started looking at me with scepticism.

“I then asked them the name of their leader and after they reluctantly told me it was ND, short for Ndubisi; I informed them that he was serving a prison term at the Port-Harcourt prisons.

PoliticsBello Released N200m To Facilitate My Recall From Senate – Dino Melaye by zinachidi(op): 8:14am On Jun 12, 2017
Dino Melaye has alleged that Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has released N200m for the ongoing move by the electorate in his constituency to recall him from the Senate.

Melaye, representing the Kogi West Senatorial District in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, made the allegation in Kabba, Kogi, on Sunday.

He, however, assured his supporters that the recall will fail.

Recall that his convoy was briefly blocked by some protesting youths while he moved around the state.

In a video, the youths clapped and repeatedly chanted “Dino, ole (thief).”

But Melaye, who later led his supporters on a peaceful march around Kabba town, said he was convinced that Bello was behind the move to recall him.

He stated that his achievements in the Senate were huge and as such, the people of his constituency were solidly behind him.

Melaye alleged that 30 of his supporters, who refused to be part of the move were arrested on the order of the governor.

“Quote me, Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has released N200 million for each of the seven local government areas in my senatorial district to facilitate my recall from the Senate,” Melaye alleged.

A member of the House of Representatives, Garba Umar- Durbunde, representing Sumaila/ Takai Constituency of Kano State, has been kidnapped in Kaduna. The PUNCH gathered that Umar-Durbunde was kidnapped at Jere along the Kaduna-Abuja Road around 5pm on Tuesday on his way to Kano from the Federal Capital Territory. It could not be immediately ascertained if he was alone in the vehicle during the incident. A member of the House, who pleaded anonymity, said the abductors had not contacted family members and friends of the lawmaker. “He was kidnapped on his way to Kano from Abuja. His family and friends have not heard anything about him,” he said.

A police source stated, “The lawmaker was on his way to Kano when he was abducted but details of the incident are sketchy. What I can confirm is that the police had launched a massive manhunt for the hoodlums who perpetrated the abduction and we are sure of rescuing the lawmaker soon and apprehending his captors subsequently.” The Kaduna State Police Command spokesman, Aliyu Usman, confirmed the abduction of Umar- Durbunde by suspected hoodlums, but declined to speak further on efforts to rescue him. “I can confirm the abduction of the lawmaker,” he told one of our correspondents on the telephone on Wednesday but declined to provide additional detail

The Presidency and the Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, expressed shock over the kidnapping of the lawmaker. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives), Mr. Abdulrahman Kawu, told The PUNCH that the incident was condemnable, calling on security operatives to ensure his release. “This is a condemnable act; I have just heard about it. I am still expecting the details and it is shocking,” Kawu stated. On his part, Ganduje condemned the kidnapping, saying it was unfortunate that such evil was carried out during the Ramadan. In a statement by the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Garba Muhammad, on behalf of the state government, the governor called on security agents to secure the release of the lawmaker

He stated, “Governor Ganduje, who was shocked by the news of the sad and unfortunate event, particularly at this holy month of Ramadan, condemned it in the strongest term as an act of wickedness perpetrated by evil and cold-hearted elements. “He therefore called on the police force and other security agencies to intensify effort to rescue the kidnapped lawmaker while also advising members of the public to be vigilante and security conscious at all tImes.

NYSCJama’atu Nasril Islam Slams NYSC For Opening Orientation Camps During Ramadan by zinachidi(op): 2:16pm On May 31, 2017
The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, a foremost Islamic body in Nigeria, has “condemned in strongest terms”, the decision of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to continue running its orientation camps for fresh graduates across the country, despite the Ramadan fast.

The body, led by Abubakar Sa’ad, the Sultan of Sokoto, also called on the Nigerian Army to immediately postpone its planned recruitment exercise until Muslims have concluded their fasting period for 2017.

The decision was part of many resolutions, which included fervent prayers for ailing President Muhammadu Buhari, reached by JNI at its recently-concluded annual central council meeting in Kaduna.
The two-day event was held between May 21 and 22.
The organisation said NYSC admitting new entrants into orientation camps and the Nigerian Army conducting recruitment exercise during Ramadan would put Muslim faithful, especially those observing fasting and prayers, at a disadvantage.

“This is because the prospective corps members would be at disadvantage to their faith and other camp activities.
“In the same vein, the council calls on the authority of the Nigerian Army to postpone the intended recruitment exercise until after Ramadan to avoid putting prospective candidates at disadvantage,” it said.
The JNI called on the NYSC to honour a previous agreement entered by the two parties for camp activities to be placed on hold during Ramadan.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Army and NYSC did not immediately return calls and text messages to their respective lines for comments Wednesday afternoon.
The Nigerian Army had earlier this month announced plans to recruit new personnel in an exercise slated to take place between May and June, 2017.
The NYSC opened camps for the latest stream of graduates last week.
