The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has called on African lawyers to help revive democracy in Nigeria, saying the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has used the police to destroy its foundation. The governor also accused the police of promoting crime in Nigeria, saying, “most of the kidnapping in the country are done by the police.” But the police promptly responded by describing the governor’s statement as deceitful. “Everybody knows the antics of Governor Wike,” police spokesperson Jimoh Moshood told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday. “You people should disregard such statements. The Nigeria Police are not promoting any crime. In fact, we are fighting crime with all the resources at our disposal”. “I want people to disregard such statement we have made a lot of progress in terms of fighting crime and criminality.”. According to a press statement by the state government, Mr. Wike alleged that the APC was already laying the structures to rig the 2019 general elections through the promotion of indicted police officers. He made the allegations at a state banquet he gave members of the African Bar Association at Government House, Port Harcourt on Monday night. Mr. Wike said the police promoted Akin Fakorede, the Rivers State Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) commander, whom he alleged was filmed at a collation centre rigging election and beating up electoral officials. He said the police also promoted an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Steven Hasso, “for his criminal role in the rigging of rerun elections on December 10, 2016. “They promised Nigerians change, but we are seeing nothing. The former President of Tanzania by his visit has done us much good by his presence in Nigeria. Through him, we will send a message to the world. “Democracy in Nigeria is gone. By 2019, nobody should talk about democracy. One Mr Akin Fakorede who was caught on video rigging election has been promoted. Stephen Hasso who was also a culprit in the rigging of elections has been promoted. Both of them are to be positioned in Rivers State for 2019 to help the APC rig elections.” But the police also dismissed the allegation concerning the promotions. Mr. Moshood said the promotion of senior police officers is done by the Police Service Commission. “I am not aware of any promotion like that,” he said. “Promotion is not done by the IGP of the Nigeria Police Force, it is done by the Police Service Commission. And to the best of my ability the commission has not released any list of promoted officers. Anything that has to do with promotion, the commission is in charge.” Speaking further, Mr. Wike claimed the APC has made it a policy to intimidate and destroy the judiciary. He claimed that the situation has degenerated to the level that police had taken over the duty of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC by allegedly certifying election results for APC to use at tribunals. The spate of cult- related activities in Akwa Ibom State in recent weeks, especially in Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun local councils, is making residents have sleepless nights. In fact, The Guardian gathered, led to the state governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, on Sunday to worship at Qua Iboe church in Ukanafun, where he called on churches in the area to help government pray fervently to arrest the ugly development in the state Unknown to the governor, while he was attending the church service, mayhem was being unleashed on Abak Obong village in Etim Ekpo local council by suspected cultists, leading to the death of two persons while many others were severely injured. According to an eyewitness account who does not want his name in print, gunmen numbering about 10, stormed the village and attacked the palace of the village head, Chief Bassey Ikpaisong, who was fatally shot and left critically wounded. His brother, Mr. Fred Ikpaisong, and one youth, identified as Mr. Udotim Essien, The Guardian gathered, were shot and killed at close range. This, the source said, is happening barely two days after a similar attack left four people dead and houses burnt in the neighbouring Udianga Enem village. Survivors of the attack have called for increased security presence in the troubled areas. “Right now, our village head is hospitalized. It is not known whether he will survive from the gunshots wounds because at the moment, he cannot talk to the people who visited him at the hospital.” Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Chukwu Ikechukwu, said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the area “has intervened and brought the matter under control. “When I contacted the DPO, he told me that immediately he heard of the matter, he rushed down with his men and calmed the situation”, he added. It would be recalled that the immediate past Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Don Awunah, had alleged as at May this year that about 40 cult groups exist in the state. The Borno Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old man, Muhammad Usman, for allegedly raping a 10- year-old girl in Maiduguri. Damian Chukwu, its Commissioner, made the disclosure while parading the suspect on Thursday in Maiduguri. Mr. Chukwu said that the suspect was apprehended by detectives on June 10, at about 14: 30 p.m. “The suspect has confessed to the act. He has told investigators that he had canal knowledge of the girl at the Londonciki area of Maiduguri,” he said. Mr. Chukwu explained that the command was awaiting legal advice from the ministry of justice, before prosecuting the suspect. The commissioner, who expressed dismay over the spate of rape cases in the state, advised victims to always come forward and seek redress. “People must change their attitude toward rape. Victims should report, while relations of suspects must stop making unnecessary pleas to save them. “It is disheartening to see victims’ families asking the police to drop charges against rape suspects. “Unless we change this attitude, we will continue to witness rape in the society,” he said. The Police commissioner said that the command had adopted proactive measures to enhance its operation, protect lives and rid Borno of criminals. He said that additional personnel had been deployed to Maiduguri and liberated areas to enhance security, while a conference would be held every month, to review and appraise the security situation. The lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial district, Senator Dino Melaye, has described the State Governor, Yahaya Bello as a “coronated governor” and not an elected one. Melaye said since his “coronation” Bello has brought such “calamitous exhibition of wickedness” on the state. The lawmaker, who took to his twitter handle, on Wednesday wrote: “Yahaya Bello is not an elected governor,he was coronated hence his outrageously calamitous exhibition of wickedness.” The Senator made the claim while sharing a photograph of a lawmaker from the State House of Assembly who was recently attacked by some thugs when they invaded the Assembly complex. The thugs alleged to be loyalists of the governor invaded the Assembly complex, while chasing out lawmakers. The aim of the attack, it was learnt was to halt the planned removal of the Majority Leader of the House, Matthew Kolawole, who is said to be a staunch supporter of the state governor. http://dailypost.ng/2017/08/03/dino-melaye-calls-yahaya-bello-coronated-kogi-governor/ Lalasticlala

The Defence Headquarters, Abuja, yesterday blamed the weather and informants for the recent Boko Haram killings, including the attacks on an oil exploration team and the University of Maiduguri lecturers. The Director of Defence Information, Major Gen. John Enenche, while speaking on Channels Television, claimed that there was a collaboration with the terrorists as the insurgents didn’t attack other convoys apart from the oil exploration team Enenche stated, “On the Boko Haram attacks, weather affects our operations; it is true. Just like the rainy season affects transportation, it is on our side too. The impact zone of a bomb is highly reduced during rainy season. The hardness of the ground is also a factor to give effect to shrapnel to eliminate the enemies. “Our movement is also affected in the rainy season. To take off an aircraft, you have to consider the weather. I am yet to see an aircraft that can fly in all kinds of weather. But it is not that the terrorists have taken all the territory. No, I believe that we will overcome this. “I did a tactical operational analysis of this attack (oil exploration team). It was not without information. The nature of this incident is strongly information-bound. There were collaborators and fifth-columnists. “Otherwise, how come the insurgents did not attack them on the first day when they finished the exercise with the soldiers? So, they had an informant who gave the terrorists information and ensured that they came to a place where they could easily be ambushed. This is it.” On the orders to relocate to Borno State given by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, the defence spokesman said the service chiefs had complied, adding that it was simply to boost the troops’ morale. “We cannot really say the Armed Forces are not on top of the situation. The pockets of attacks here and there are strongly based on information from their terrorists’ collaborators who are still among us. “On the vice-president’s instructions to go back to the command centre, the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Air Staff are fully in coordination of the operations and their presence will boost the morale of the troops,” he said. http://dailypost.ng/2017/08/01/boko-haram-attack-defence-headquarters-reveals-terrorists-succeeded/ Lalasticlala
