There was incredibly palpable anger at the Effurun Magistrate’s District Court 1 sitting in Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State, when trial opened, penultimate Monday, in a case of sexual abuse and torture of 13 year old Junior Secondary School, JSS 2 student of Ekpan Basic Secondary School (names withheld). Read the painful story below: Mrs. Chibuzor Onyeji, the accused, who lives at Oghoyoma Onomokpome Street, Ekpan, was charged with assault and grievous injuries on the visibly traumatised girl, who is her cousin and had been living with her since 2010. Police are currently searching for Mrs. Onyeji's husband, Francis Onyeji who is currently at large, whose alleged sexual abuse of the girl resulted in his wife’s vicious knife attack. Apparently, all the lawyers and witnesses in the court were incredibly upset at the accused's counsel during his defense and even more angry when the accused knelt down and begged the girl to forgive her after pleading not guilty to the one-count charge of assault and causing grievous injuries. According to the victim, her cousin’s husband started abusing her sexually and pacifying her with cash over two years ago, whenever he was off duty. On one of these days, part of the N1,500 which he allegedly gave her, after sleeping with her the previous day, got missing in school during break period and she reported the matter to her class teacher. After a useless search of the money, her classmates, who felt wrongly accused, followed the complainant home after closing to express their anger to her guardian, Mrs. Onyeji. The young girl said in court: "My aunt asked where I got the money and l told her it was her husband who gave me after sleeping with me. She said it was a lie. " Warning: From here, things get really graphic and painful. Go on..... . The young girl continued: "At about 9.30p.m she woke me up, heated a knife on the fire and started to use it on my body, saying she will kill me half-dead. She used pestle to hit my head several times and iron rod to hit my ankles. She wanted to pour boiled water on me, but she later said no, vowing to do that when I return from school the next day. She put the hot knife in my chest" The young victim also recounted another incident as follows: "This other old mark on my back was when she asked me to boil yam. She said the sizes were too big and took a piece from the boiling pot, unzipped my dress and placed it on my back." The Vice Principal at Ekpan Basic Secondary School, Mrs. Queenbetty Unogwa, said the school authority had sent for Mrs. Onyeji several times because of her ward’s incessant lateness and absenteeism. Mrs. Unogwa explains: "The pupil claimed it was due to prolonged engagement with house chores, which caused her to miss mathematics, agricultural science and two other papers during last term examinations. Mrs Onyeji refused honouring the invitations." One day when the accused brought the girl to school with the intention of disgracing her publicly after inflicting the knife injuries on her the night before, the school authority cashed on the rare opportunity to get to the bottom of all of the girl's whereabouts. The VP explains: "We saw the degree of burns and swellings on her head and we started asking the woman questions. But her behaviour was very unruly, prompting us to call the police. The girl is a very intelligent girl despite the situation she found herself. She is among the best in her class; l believe that she would do far better given a conducive environment." The school immediately had to put her in care of the school’s Guidance Counsellor, Mrs. Rita Obuh, who took custody because the police said they could not keep her at the station. Before adjourning the matter to July 21, trial magistrate, Mrs. Blesing Ideh, granted the accused bail as a nursing mother of a three-month old baby in the sum of N500,000 with a surety in like sum, which must include a confirmed landed property within the Magisterial District, while the accused must be present in court at every sitting. Also, a joint prayer by the Child Welfare/Development Officer from Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lopgun Solomon, and Mr. Omorere of the Nigerian Child Welfare Fund, that the court grant them custody of the girl was granted, despite the appeal of Pius Nworie, biological father of the abused teenager, to take his daughter home. The girl is presently in an undisclosed orphanage, where she is recovering from the physical injuries after undergoing medical examination and treatment. To think that it is this young girl's cousin who is also a mother to her own three month old baby that would do all of this! Incredibly sad indeed. www..com/talk/topic,269813.0.html Cc: lalasticlala

The Department of State Service, Bayelsa Command, has arrested three pastors and a woman for allegedly trafficking 36 children. The three pastors are said to belong to the Assemblies of God Church and a woman, who runs a private school in Yenagoa. The four suspects were paraded at the DSS office in Yenagoa on Wednesday. The pastors’ names were given as Dauda Nurugada, 32, from Kebbi State; Anthony Anthony Onwebeyi, 53, from Anambra State, Rev. Benaalim Isa-Garba, 43, from Kaduna State, and Mrs Tombra Alazigha, 38, school proprietress. The 36 children, whose ages range between five and 14 years, rescued from homes, where they had been used as maids were brought to the parade. Addressing journalists at the state headquarters of the DSS, the Assistant State Director of Security, Mr. Friday Onuche, said the children were rescued from homes in Yenagoa and Kaiama in Bayelsa state, Enugu-Agidi in Anambra state and Port Harcourt in Rivers State after investigations. He said the kingpins operated under the guise of missionaries and non-governmental organisations. He said they targeted vulnerable children largely from the Northern part of the country. He said among the places targeted by the suspected traffickers are Zuru ethnic group in Kebbi and Zamfara states and Zaria in Kaduna State. He said the suspects usually approached the poor parents to allow the innocent children under the guise of assisting to send them to school and getting good education. Onuche said the children rather than go to school as promised always ended up as househelps or hawkers on the streets. Onuche said, “There is the need therefore for members of the public to be sensitised on the need to be circumspect in the way they give their children or take in children from such unsuspecting modern slave traders.” Speaking on the allegation, Pastor Anthony Onwebeyi, who confirmed that he had been arrested for the same offence by police but released after investigations by the Anambra state Police Command, said he was not a trafficker. He said he is a missionary, whose mission was to help children get back to school. He said he only collected some small amount of money as transport fares from those who eventually got custody of the kids. Alazigha, said she runs both a private school and an NGO that takes care of vulnerable children. She said she had six of the children in her custody and they were all brought to her by the pastors. She however denied using them as housemaids, saying they attend her school together with her other six children from her meagre earnings being a civil servant and a school proprietress. Indications emerged yesterday in Abuja, that President Muhammadu Buhari’s forthcoming trip to the United States of America for extensive bilateral, economic and financial discussions with President Barrack Obama and the need to answer certain questions about the terrorism challenges as well as Nigeria’s military capability to tackle the menace conclusively, necessitated the sack of the service chiefs.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/why-buhari-sacked-service-chiefs/

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has announced that it began local production of the Accord sedan on July 10, 2015 in Nigeria, West Africa, where the automobile market is expected to expand in the future. Honda Automobile Western Africa Ltd., a wholly- owned subsidiary of Honda in Nigeria, established a new plant by installing automobile production facilities and equipment within the property of the existing Honda motorcycle production plant and began Accord production with annual production capacity of 1,000 units. This new plant is Honda's first automobile production plant in Africa. Honda began motorcycle production and sales in Nigeria in 1980. Since then, Honda has been evolving its businesses in order that they take root in this region. In 2013, Honda established a local automobile business subsidiary and began the import and sales of Honda automobiles. Based on its longstanding commitment to "build products close to the customer" and by leveraging its knowledge and technique amassed through motorcycle business, Honda begins local production of automobiles for the customers of Nigeria. Honda views Africa as a new growth market. Honda has been expanding its motorcycle, automobile and power products business in the southern part of Africa through its local subsidiary established in South Africa in 2000. In Kenya, in the eastern part of Africa, Honda established an automobile sales office in December 2011, followed by the establishment of a motorcycle production and sales subsidiary in March 2013. Honda will continue strengthening its global production system and capability in order to deliver products that satisfy customers in all regions around the world. Comment by Yoshi Yamane, Senior Managing Officer and Director, Honda Motor Co., Ltd.: "Establishment of the first Honda automobile production plant in Africa is an epoch-making challenge for us. This production operation incorporates know-how Honda has amassed through its long history of motorcycle business in this market, and we could re-discover the strengths of Honda at the spot of manufacturing operations. I expect that this initiative will lead to a great leap in our automobile business in Nigeria and become a first step toward expansion to the entire African market." Comment by Yusuke Hori, Operating Officer and Head of Regional Unit (Africa and the Middle East), Honda Motor Co., Ltd.: "It is a great pleasure to see the start-up of Honda's first automobile production plant in Africa. Our production volume is still small; however, we will strive to deliver the joy of mobility to as many customers as possible and expand our business in Africa in the future." www.africabusinesscommunities.com/news/honda-begins-automobile-production-in-nigeria.html Cc: lalasticlala |

There have been a lot of deadly boko haram attacks in the north for two months now and more than 400 Nigerians have been killed within this time. This is a ‘disaster’. A lot of people in the north do not feel safe in their worship places. They don’t feel safe at home or at work and they don’t even feel safe when they go out to the streets. For how long will people keep living this way and what is government doing to stop this massacre? President Buhari’s spokesman Femi Adesina, said last week that the government will consider negotiating with the terrorists in order to end the attacks. He said: “Most wars, however furious or vicious, often end around the negotiation table. So if boko haram opts for negotiation, the government will not be averse to it. Government will, however, not be negotiating from a position of weakness but that of strength”. Is this the way to go about solving this problem? Should the government negotiate with the boko haram and will this stop the bloodshed? A case in point is the Niger Delta militancy that happened about 10 years ago. A group rose up and started to kidnap expatriates and bomb oil facilities to provoke government to address the problems in the region. The crisis cost the government a lot of money because it disrupted oil supply, and although the government fought the militants at first under Obasanjo, it backed down and sued for peace later when Late Yar’Adua was president. Yar’Adua offered the militants an amnesty deal and they surrendered, and soon the crisis was finished. That crisis is pretty different from what is happening now in the north, because the Delta militants were apparently fighting for a cause that people believed in. But boko haram is not like that. These terrorists are killing people to destabilise the government and seize control so they can cause more ruin. People are getting killed in the north because the government has not been able to win its fight against the insurgents. So if a peace talk will end this frequent bloodshed, a lot of Nigerians (especially those in the danger zones) will be happy with the government on that. Boko Haram has killed over 20,000 Nigerians till date and it still keeps killing people. Negotiating with these criminals will be a disappointment to many Nigerians who voted for this current president, because they believed he would lead the army to crush the boko haram. More so, last year, reports came up that the boko haram had decided to negotiate with the government and hammer out a deal. The so called peace talk received some hype and there were positive expectations while it presumably lasted. But it turned to be a complete sham. There were no peace talks and the terrorists began pounding the north again soon after the whole thing ended. Nigerians will be gutted to see a repeat of that under President Buhari. They have put too much faith in this administration to accept anything short of victory against these rouges. The boko haram apparently is not interested in making a deal with the government anyway, so the president’s spokesman was just being hypothetical. However, what we now know is that these terrorists are not out to negotiate peace. They just want to go on killing and destroying. Reportedly the dreaded sect has offered to release the kidnapped Chibok girls in exchange for the militant leaders held by the government. www.naij.com/485977-should-buhari-negotiate-with-boko-haram.html |
The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Akwa Ibom has accused a former governor of the state of bribing an electoral chief to frustrate the party’s petition. The APC on Friday alleged that former Governor Godswill Akpabio, now Senator, bribed the INEC Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom, Austin Okojie, with N2.5 billion to frustrate the party’s petition challenging the election of Udom Emmanuel as governor. In a petition on July 8 addressed to the Director General of the Department of State Security and the Inspector General of Police, the APC, through its legal counsel, Victor Iyanam, accused Mr. Okojie of collecting the bribe from the former governor to work against its interest and that of its governorship candidate, Okon Umanah, at the tribunal. Mr. Iyanam alleged that the bribe was paid by the former governor’s government prior to the April elections to compromise the REC and make him feel “obliged to complete the corrupt process by doing everything possible to frustrate the governorship elections petition of the APC candidate.” He said the APC was compelled to issue the petition after several complaints against the continued refusal by INEC in the state to grant access to the party to inspect election materials, despite the May 12 and 23 as well as June 25, 2015 orders of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal for Akwa Ibom State. Following allegations of threats to security by the APC, the Federal Government had approved the relocation of the tribunal from Uyo to Abuja, while all materials associated with the poll were later also moved to Abuja. To ensure full compliance with the directive to transfer the election materials to Abuja for the forensic analysis and inspection to be conducted in a free and fair environment, Mr. Iyanam said the tribunal had also ordered that officials of the DSS and police be available during the inspection exercise. The APC, however, said Mr. Okojie had neither obeyed any of the orders of the tribunal, nor cooperated with the party to carry out the inspection “principally (due) to the fact that the sum of N2.5 Billion was disbursed to him by the previous government of Chief Godswill Akpabio prior to the general elections.” Mr. Iyanam cited instances where claimed the REC had demonstrated commitment to frustrate the APC, accusing him of bringing only some of the sensitive election materials from Uyo to Abuja and ensuring that they were not handed over to anybody for custody. Consequently, he said as at July 8, 2015 the APC has not been able to access the materials since they arrived Abuja, with the July 20, 2015 deadline for the completion of the inspection fast approaching. “The objective of the delay tactics employed by Mr. Okojie on behalf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is to prevent the APC candidate from using the evidence to effectively prosecute his case at the election tribunal,” Mr. Iyanam said. Other INEC officials accused by the APC of working against its interest include the Head of the Legal Services department of INEC in Akwa Ibom, Uche Okorie, and his counterpart at the INEC headquarters. The party accused them of conniving to abandon in the rain election materials brought from Uyo to Abuja. Besides, with formal trial in the petition scheduled to commence on July 14, 2015 and to last only 14 days, Mr. Iyanam said the deliberate delay in completing the forensic inspection of the materials was to ensure that the APC and its candidate would not be able to gather sufficient evidence to prosecute their petition. The APC accused Mr. Okojie and his officials of working to cause “irreparable damage to the election materials,” as most of the documents brought from Uyo were already destroyed on arrival in Abuja. “Water was deliberately poured into the bags of materials, while some were kept under the rain, contrary to the established practice of keeping the materials in envelops according to their polling units,” the party said. The party listed some of the election materials that were mutilated and destroyed to include Polling Unit Result Sheets, Form EC 8A for the 2982 units in the state; Ward Result sheets, Form EC 8B for the 329 Wards; and Local Government Result Sheet, Form EC 8C for the 31 Local Government Areas. “The conduct of the REC, absolutely criminal in content, reckless in execution and done with impunity, is not only a breach of public trust, but would have catastrophic consequences if allowed to go unpunished in order to serve as a deterrent,” the APC said. Efforts to speak with Mr. Okojie Saturday were unsuccessful. Several calls to his cell phone were not answered. He also did not reply our text message as at the time of publishing this story. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/186522-apc-accuses-akpabio-of-bribing-akwa-ibom-inec-chief-with-n2-5-billion.html |

Boko Haram gunmen shot dead eight people in Nigeria's remote northeast as they returned to inspect their damaged homes in an abandoned town, refugees have said. Some residents who had fled Gamboru across the border into northern Cameroon went back to the frontier town last morning after hearing a rumour that Chadian and Cameroonian troops were providing security. "We lost eight people to Boko Haram gunmen today (Friday)," said Babagana Bukar, a Nigerian from Gamboru now living in the town of Fotokol, just across the border in Cameroon. "Some of our people went back to Gamboru after they were told the town was safe for them.... While they were inspecting their homes, Boko Haram gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on them killing five men and three women," he said. Two other former residents of the town, also now living in Fotokol, supported Bukar's account. One of them, Umar Babakalli, said two other women were seized and beaten. They managed to make it back across the bridge that forms the border and were being treated for their injuries, he added. Boko Haram fighters have been seen going in and out of Gamboru for months, sometimes firing rocket-propelled grenades towards Fotokol, according to those who fled. The group, which has been pushed out of captured towns across Nigeria's northeast by a four-nation coalition since February, are said to be dispersed in remote parts of the hard-to-reach region. In the weeks since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power on May 29, the Islamist militants have stepped up their attacks on civilians, hitting crowded markets, mosques and churches. More than 550 people have been killed, increasing pressure on Buhari to bring an end to the violence. A new, strengthened regional force is due to deploy against Boko Haram by the end of this month. www.outlookindia.com/news/article/boko-haram-gunmen-kill-8-in-nigeria/906171 |
Subscribers to the MTN network have decried MTN's silence on its adoption of 16 digits recharge pin which they described as yet another insult to its customers in Nigeria. Speaking with THISDAY during the week, the president of National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOM), Deolu Ogunbanjo, expressed shock over the development as he was just getting to know as there was no prior notice to its implementation. According to Ogunbanjo, there was nothing wrong in the new development. He however frowned at the failure of the company in carrying stakeholders along, a development he described as an infringement on customers' right. "MTN is becoming more arrogant in the business environment. In the recent time, they have been exhibiting unNigerian-like behaviour and this is rather unfortunate. Recently, the company fired its Nigerian outsourcing firm and gave the job to a South African based Agency. Also the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned the company to stop running advertisement on its Tru Talk package ,but they have refused to heed the regulatory body's directives even as I speak. Now they have chosen to switch to 16 digits pin but without making it public, for me not to have been knowledgeable about this, so will it be for many others. Right to be informed of any new development about a product is consumers inalienable right as guaranteed by the Consumers' Protection Council to which MTN has denied its customers”, he complained. Contacted, MTN Public Relations Manager in Nigeria, Funsho Aina confirmed that there was no formal communication on the latest move except for the notice that was on its twitter and facebook pages. The notice reads, "We wish to confirm that the 16 digit logical PINs currently in circulation are genuine. While the new 16-digit PINs will ultimately replace the regular 12 digit PIN currently in use, please note that all recharge cards with the 12-digit PIN remain valid while stock last. We urge all customers to purchase their logical PINs and recharge cards from only authorised vendors or retailers” Asked the motive behind the move, they responded, "No reason". The South African owned Telecommunications Company in June made a switch from 12 digits to 16 digits logical pin and till date, not many are aware. From our investigations, the few number of users aware of this development got to know at the point of purchase. According to kikelomo Mofikoya, a primary school teacher who uses MTN, she almost had a fight with the card seller when she saw 16 digits as against the 12 digits she was used to. " When I bought the MTN recharge card and saw 16 digits, I almost exchange blows with the seller, thinking it was fake, not until I loaded it and saw it to be real. MTN got it wrong by not making announcement to that effect". While the company claimed to have passed a notice via the social media, it was also discovered that the new 16 digits had been in circulation long before the notice was communicated on 28th June, 2015. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/subscribers-decry-mtns-new-recharge-pin/214292/ |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday narrated how former Adamawa State governor Murtala Nyako, his son, Abdulaziz (a serving senator), and two of the ex-governor’s aides allegedly looted billions of public funds. Facing trial with them at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja are Zulkifikk Abba (Nyako’s ex- political adviser), Abubakar Aliyu and five companies in which they allegedly have interests. The companies are Blue Opal Limited, Sebore Farms & Extension Ltd, Pagoda Fortunes Ltd, Tower Assets Management Ltd and Crust Energy Ltd. They were slammed with a 37-count charge of conspiracy, money laundering and abuse of office. The commission in its counter-affidavit to the accused persons’ bail application at the court, said that it would be out of place to grant them bail in view of the gravity of their offences. It also claimed that the ‘mysterious deaths’ of two of its witnesses – Ma’aji Mohammed Iro and Abdulmalik Dalhatu – “has instilled fear in other prospective witnesses in this case.” Iro was, until his death, a Regional Manager with Zenith Bank. He was said to be in charge of Adamawa State Government’s accounts with the bank, and allegedly assisted the accused persons in laundering billions of naira from the state’s coffers. The EFCC said: “The 1st and 2nd accused persons (Nyako and Abaduaziz) are the owners of the 6th accused (Sebore Farms & Extension Limited), which they operated by themselves. Several fictitious contracts, running into billions of naira, were awarded to the said 6th accused while the 1st accused was governor of Adamawa State. One Ma’aji Mohammed Iro was in charge of the accounts of Adamawa State with Zenith Bank. “On the instruction of the 1st accused, Ma’aji Mohammed Iro made several cash lodgments running into billions of naira into the accounts of several companies and individuals including the accounts of the 6th to 9th accused (Blue Opal Ltd, Sebore Farms & Extension Ltd, Pagoda Fortunes Ltd, Tower Assets Management Ltd and Crust Energy Ltd) all from the accounts of Adamawa State Government for no specific reason. “On the instruction of the 1st accused, N698,408,011.62 was paid from the account of Adamawa State Government with Zenith Bank into the account of the 6th accused (Sebore Farms and Extension ltd) with the same bank to service and liquidate the loan of N500 million obtained by the 6th accused. “Another sum of N160m was deposited into the account of Agrited Nigeria Ltd on the instruction of the 1st accused from the account of the Adamawa State Government with no contract rendered to the state. “Several moneys running into over N5 billion of Adamawa State funds were transferred to the 9th accused (Crust Energy Ltd) mostly on the instruction of the 1st accused. “About N240 million of Adamawa State was invested by the 7th accused – Pagoda Fortunes Ltd (a company owned by a son of the 1st accused) in Hill View Estate, Abuja, an estate owned by the 2nd accused (Abdulaziz Nyako). “The 3rd accused (Zulkifikk Abba), who is a political adviser to the 1st accused, is the owner of Alpharetta Farms Ltd, one of the companies through which funds of Adamawa State was stolen. The 3rd accused is a director in the 9th accused (Crust Energy Ltd), a company controlled by the 2nd accused and through which several billion of naira belonging to Adamawa State was stolen. “The 4th accused (Abubakar Aliyu) is a signatory to several accounts of the 5th accused (Blue Opal Ltd), through which several monies running into billions of naira from the funds of Adamawa State Government were laundered to develop Hill View Estate, Abuja.” However, Justice Evoh Chukwu rejected EFCC’s objection and granted bail to the accused persons at N350 million with either two sureties or one, who is a director in any Federal Government’s establishment. The sureties, the judge said, must own landed property in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), show evidence of tax payment for the last three years and must swear to affidavit of means. The accused persons are to deposit their travel documents with the court. news2.onlinenigeria.com/news/423646-how-nyako-son-aide-looted-adamawa-by-efcc.html |

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed dates for the conduct of governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states. The commission said in Abuja on Friday that governorship election will hold in Kogi State on November 21 while that of Bayelsa State is to hold on December 5, 2015. This information was contained in a statement by INEC’s Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Dr. Chris Iyimoga. Iyimoda added that primaries for the elections shall be held on or before August 23, 2015 and September 5, 2015, respectively for the two states in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2014 (as amended). The commission added that campaigns by political parties shall commence on July 24 and end on November 29 in Kogi while that of Bayelsa will be from September 6 to December 4, 2015. Governorship elections did not hold in the affected states during the last April 11 governorship election because the tenure of the two governors have yet to end. The two states are in the hand of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party. However, while Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State is battling with the All Progressives Congress, which has made serious incursion into the state, Governor Seriake Dickson on the other, is facing internal rebellion within his party in Bayelsa State. The APC had the upper hand in Kogi State during the last general electios. Meanwhile, there are also rumours that Wada may be denied his party’s ticket for the election due to what a member of the National Working Committee of the PDP attributed to the governor’s “poor performance.” “The information we are having is that Wada is not doing well and that if we field him, we may lose the state,” the source added. Indication that Wada may not have things easy appears to be manifesting. When the governor visited the party headquarters over the cancellation of the ad-hoc delegates for the Ward Congresses in the state 10 days ago, he stormed out of the party national secretariat, shortly after meeting with the Acting National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus. Wada, who arrived at the party secretariat early in the morning to have a meeting the NWC, was kept waiting for hours. www.punchng.com/news/inec-fixes-dates-for-kogi-bayelsa-gov-elections/ Cc: lalasticlala |
