Crime3 Nigerian Policemen On Trial For Assaulting 8-month Pregnant Woman by zinachidi(op): 12:50pm On Jul 26, 2015
Three policemen who assaulted an eight-month pregnant woman in Lagos are currently undergoing orderly room trial, the Lagos State Police Command said on Saturday. The command’s spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, who made the disclosure, said they were arrested on Tuesday after a complaint about their alleged human rights infringement. He said the law would take its cause on any member of the police force that committed any crime, particularly human rights abuse but did not disclose the names of the policemen. The woman lost her pregnancy after the assault. Sources had said the woman had complication as a result of the assault. “The policemen were said to have sprayed tear gas on the woman in her car following an argument arising from the gridlock on the road. “She was rushed to one Safe Hands Hospital at Old Ojo Road, Amuwo Odofin where she was allegedly operated upon but the baby died less than 48 hours later. “Apparently the gas she inhaled resulted in the complication and the subsequent surgery. “The three policemen in question are attached to the Satellite Town Police Division,’’ the sources said. EducationIG Offers Scholarships To Children Of Slain Officers by zinachidi(op): 7:47am On Jul 26, 2015
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, has offered scholarship to children of slain police officers who lost their lives while fighting insurgency, even as he assured that the officers will be promoted post-humously. The IG who made the promise at the State Police headquarters in Bauchi during a one day working visit to officers of the command weekend, also hammered on community policing, pointing out that police public partnership is one of the most effective ways to combat crime in the society.

Also in Gombe, the IG told members of the Nigeria Police Force that the internal security challenge presently facing the country is surmountable and should not allow hoodlums to overwhelm them as he is ready to enhance an enabling environment. Addressing officers and men of the force in Bauchi, he said: “Public partnership is one of the most effective ways to combat crime in the society. The total number of police in the state cannot be adequate for security, so the police must rely on public partnership to be successful in crime prevention. “I have spoken to the Police Public Relations department to go schools, motor parks, market places and other non-state actors and talk about issues such as cultism, drug abuse and other social vices. When you begin to connect with the society in this manner, they will become nice to you and give relevant information that will make your jobs easy”.

The IG assured that the welfare of police officers will be paramount on his priorities, saying that they are the front-line soldiers who sacrifice their lives for the nation. He promised to foot the bill of 36,000 officers attending promotion training course in the nation and cater for other expenses in the course of their training, adding that police officers tend to be corrupt because of fear of the unknown.

In his own address, the State commissioner of police, Mohammed K. Mohammed requested for adequate manpower in the state, saying that 273 policemen have been transferred out of the state while 16 were posted into the command. He commended the IG on his emphasis on professional ethics by members of the force in the discharge of their duties.

The IGP who also spoke during a working visit to Gombe Police Command yesterday said 36,000 officers and men are going to be promoted and 6,000 units of housing built for the police as an immediate welfare intervention. He said force members who lose their lives in the course containing the insurgency would have their children on scholarship to university level and the families left behind would be among the first to benefit from the housing scheme. He urged those that have remained on one rank for so long to exercise patience as he is working with relevant authorities towards ensuring that the issue of lack of vacancy that normally retard promotion is dealt with. He said there is now a platform where members of the public can now report the conduct of police personnel. Arase warned against putting people n custody except there is sufficient evidence to do so which is why there is emphasis on intelligence-led policing for those presently in training because “investigations must be intelligence driven, must be evidential with sufficient evidence before inviting somebody to the station.”

Travel5 Reasons Lagosians Love The BRT by zinachidi(op): 1:33pm On Jul 24, 2015
If you’re visiting Lagos for the first time, you’re likely to mistake the long red or green painted vehicles that run on designated routes as interstate vehicles. Theses vehicles and the whole structure is referred to as BRT and is popular amongst Lagos commuters.

It’s quite common to see Lagosians queuing at a BRT park waiting for a bus while other transport vehicles going to the same destination are empty. That’s because there are so many reasons Lagosians love this transport system and would wait on queue for it.

Here are five reasons Lagosians love the BRT

FAST

The BRT has its designated route in some parts of Lagos. This allows it to over being stuck in the usual Lagos traffic in so many places. It also has the benefit of picking passengers from the bus stop and has minimal stops along the way to pick passengers. The best part of it is that it doesn’t get stopped by the police or other officials in what usually slows down other vehicles.

Convenient

Riding in a BRT gives you a level of confidence that your shirt is not likely to be torn by a piece of metal lurking by the side of your window as with the case with some vehicles. The seats are reasonable set apart and there are grips to hold when standing in the vehicle. If you’re going for an interview, youre likely to appear in the place the same way you left home in your clean smooth outfit.

Cheap

You might find this incredible but the BRT is actually cheaper than other buses. Take the Dopemu To Obalende transport for example which costs less than N200 using the BRT more when you use other bus services. Trust Lagosians to be prudent when it comes to paying for transportation. A few Naira can make a huge difference.

Class

Yes, the BRT has class. Lagosians still glue their gazes to a BRT when it is passing by. Passengers are expected to get a ticket before boarding the vehicle in a single file. This brings an element of a mega city into the scheme and participating in it gives one a feeling of belonging to a recognised class. Lagosians love to associate with class and it is not surprising they want to be seen in a BRT.

Safe

Safety is very paramount. Lagosians are very concerned about their safety and the BRT over time has shown to be quite safe. It rarely gets into an accident and fatalities are sure to be minimal if it does. Why wont Lagosians love to take rides in the BRT then?

CrimeSouth African Police Beat Nigerian To Death by zinachidi(op): 12:58pm On Jul 24, 2015
The President of Nigeria Union in South Africa, Ikechukwu Anyene, on Thursday, criticized the killing of a 30 year old Nigerian in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

Mr Emeka Ezinteje, Public Relations Officer of the union, told NAN in Johannesburg that the union decried the incident after receiving the report.

NAN recalls that the Nigerian, Nonso Odo, from Amangwu-Nkwerre, Imo State, on Thursday, was allegedly beaten to death by South African Police officers.

Ezinteje said reports indicated that the deceased, who was a barber, quarreled with a fellow Nigerian in their business centre.

“After the quarrel, the fellow Nigerian stopped a police patrol team. The barber ran when he saw the patrol team.”

According to Ezinteje, the police patrol went after the victim; 30 minutes later, the police brought back the lifeless body of the barber.

“Not satisfied with the police report, some members of the union went to see the corpse in hospital.”

He said Sgt. Nengobeni, a South African police officer at the hospital, denied that the police killed him.

The officer said the police were flagged down by somebody while the victim took to his heels.

Nengobeni said by the time the police got to the victim, he was tired and gasping for breath and was pronounced dead on getting to the hospital.

Ezinteje said the union suspected foul play and would get to the root of the case.

“We have also received reports by eyewitnesses that Odo was beaten to death.”

“We have ordered a post mortem to ascertain the cause of Odo’s death. The union will also take this case to the Independent Police Investigative Department, for more investigation.”

“The department is responsible for investigating wrong doings by police officers,” he said.

He also said the incident had been reported to Nigeria`s Consulate General in Johannesburg and Hillbrow Police Station, also in Johannesburg.

HealthBaby With Hole-in-heart Cries For Help by zinachidi(op): 4:27pm On Jul 23, 2015
WHEN Mrs. Joy Njoku gave birth to her baby boy a
few months back, her joy, as well as her
husband's, knew no bounds. Little Emmanuel
Ikechukwu Njoku quickly became the apple of
their eyes within sparse seconds of his arrival into
this world and his parents showered him with love and affection. Emmanuel is the last of three
children but that didn't stop his parents from
loving the energetic handsome baby. Sadly, their joy is being threatened as baby
Emmanuel has been diagnosed with a hole in his
heart.

According to a medical report made available to
The Guardian by his tearful mother, a Consultant
Pediatrician and Cardiologist at MeCure Health
Centre, Dr. Chinyere Uzodinma, diagnosed
Emmanuel of enlarged atrial septal defect,
pulmonary artery stenosis and a dilated right heart. "His heart rate is also described as high at 150b\m,
very irregular with missed beats and a pan systolic
murmur. His left heart border is bulging as well." Several specialists have recommended urgent
surgery for the ASD closure if Emmanuel is to have
any chance of living. The mother narrated that she had him in a private
hospital and he looked fine initially but she noticed
that his breathing became increasingly noisy as
days went on, especially when he was being
breastfed. Two weeks after his birth, she noticed that he
started experiencing choking and shortness of
breath, especially at night. After several hospital
visits, she was referred to Isolo General Hospital
and after being examined by several specialists, he
was eventually diagnosed at the MeCure Health Centre as having a hole in the heart. He was just a
month old at the time. Mrs. Njoku said she initially refused to believe it
because Emmanuel still looked very healthy and
was eating normally but after the choking
increased, she was forced to face reality and begin
to look for urgent solutions. After his diagnosis,
she was advised to take him to India for a corrective surgery. After contacting the Indian
hospital, she was told to wait till Emmanuel was six
months old, with the hope that the hole might
close on its own. However, his condition has deteriorated and the
need for the surgery has become apparent. "He cries a lot now. Though he is eating, he is
losing weight. His breathing is very fast and his
buccal cavity is blue, which doctors say is a sign of
oxygen shortage," his mother said. Mr. and Mrs Njoku are calling on all kind-hearted
Nigerians to save their son's life. Emmanuel's father
sells beer and his mother is a housewife. According to them, they have spent so much on
his health and have even gotten passports for their
journey. They, however, do not have the N2.4
million needed for the corrective operation and
want Nigerians to support them. Any assistance for baby Emmanuel Njoku can be
made to Njoku Joy Nwakaego. Diamond Bank

Nairaland GeneralHow Fake Naira Floods Borno Via Cameroon by zinachidi(op): 4:18pm On Jul 23, 2015
Police in Maiduguri have cracked down on an international syndicate that specialises in printing and circulating of fake N1,000 note in Borno and neighbouring states.. They also arrested the leader of the group, Adam Ajid, and his other members, whose business associates were said to be in Cameroon. Their fake naira notes depot was also discovered by police in Maiduguri. Ajid said that the fake notes were being printed in Cameroon and then smuggled to Borno State. Ajid told the Police that he was involved in the fake notes which were very difficult to distinguish from the real ones because his legal business collapsed due to the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency. He also said that he was reselling bundles of hundred fake N1,000 notes to the local fraudsters at the cost of N16,000, while buying them from Cameroonian counterfeiters at the cost of N11,000 thus having N5000 from each transaction. Hence the real value of each fake N1,000 note was N110. Borno State police Commissioner, Aderemi Opadokun, informed the public that “Borno State police recently embarked on proactive measures of anti-crime patrol and intelligence gathering that paid off with the arrest of a notorious fake currency dealer, Adam Ajid, who lives in Fulatari Ward, Maiduguri, who is known for defrauding members of the public with fake currency.” He also added that N4.5 million of fake N1000 notes were discovered in the house of the arrested suspect. Despite his arrest, it is feared that a lot of fake notes distributed earlier is still circulating around Borno State. A month earlier a factory where fake currencies of nairas, as well as pounds, euros, dollars and other foreign currencies were being produced was found by officers of the the Oyo State police comma

HealthNigeria Donates $1m To Fight Ebola In Africa by zinachidi(op): 8:09am On Jul 22, 2015
The Federal Government on Tuesday demonstrated its commitment to stamping out Ebola Virus Disease in Africa, with President Muhammadu Buhari announcing a donation of US$1 million to the continent.

This is in addition to earlier contributions by Nigeria to stem the disease in the region.

The gesture is to also underscore the importance of ridding the continent of Ebola and in the spirit of mutual assistance.

A statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Ayo Adesugba, said Buhari announced the donation during the international conference of African Ministers of Health in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

The President, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Awute, used the forum to share Nigeria’s experience in 2014, in rapidly containing the deadly virus.

He however said, “Nigeria is not celebrating the end of Ebola in Nigeria until this disease is totally eliminated from the West African region. This is because Ebola in one country remains also a threat to another. Therefore, meeting the challenge is crucial to us right now and so we remain committed to support all efforts of the African Union in this fight.”

Along this line, according to him, Nigeria is in full support of the establishment of the African Centre for Disease Control, working with the regional centre, which he said, would significantly enhance health targets to build the International Health Regulations Capacities.

Buhari observed that ECOWAS region was the first to take the initiative of establishing a regional Centre for Disease Control in which the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control was designed as the regional centre in recognition of its role in curtailing the spread of the disease in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

He stated that Nigeria was supporting research efforts in developing therapies and vaccines against the disease, adding that the efforts were leading to the development of promising Ebola therapies through partnership between government and private sector.

The President recalled that Nigeria welcomed the AU Peace and Security Council’s decision taken during its 450th meeting on August 19 2014, to support the Ebola affected countries in West Africa through the Africa Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa by deploying volunteers.

He remarked that Nigeria was among the first countries to respond, by deploying 198 personnel who served in the ASEOWA mission, which contributed to the progress made in the affected countries by reducing Ebola cases from about 400 per week in 2014 to less than 30 in 2015.

Buhari observed that the success might have informed governments and partners to embark on disengaging or reducing their support in human and material resources, even though the mission of the ASEOWA to stop Ebola transmission in the affected member states, prevent international spread and rebuild health systems had not been fully achieved.

He stressed that the recent upsurge of cases in Sierra Leone and Guinea and the reappearance of cases in Liberia, after being certified Ebola-free by the World Health Organisation, confirmed that Africa was dealing with regional and international health security emergencies of larger proportions.

Buhari therefore called on the African Union Commission to reconsider the immediate redeployment of volunteers to the affected countries, “until the job is done.”
