An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, on Tuesday ordered the remand of one Blessing Fred, 23, at Kirikiri Prison, for allegedly stabbing her 7- year-old son at the back. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, ordered for the remanded of the accused as she pleaded guilty and adjourned the case till Sept. 23 for sentencing. The accused, a stylist, who lives at No.12, Tunde Olushola St., Ijaiye, a Lagos suburb, was arraigned on a two-count charge of assault and grievous harm. The prosecutor, Insp. Racheal Williams, told the court that the offences were committed on July 13, at the accused residence. Williams said that the accused acted on her neighbour’s complaint that her 7-year-old son dragged her 5-year-old daughter inside the room, removed her pants and touched her private part. “The accused was angry, beat her son severally and stabbed him at the back with a broken bottle. “If not for the intervention of neighbours who rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, he would have died as a result of bleeding from the wound,’’ she said. The offences according to the prosecutor, contravened Sections 170 and 244(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2011. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/mother-stabs-7-year-old-son-for-removing-neighbour-daughters-pants/ Cc: lalasticlala |

Three boys aged between 15 and 17 years who allegedly stole N11,500 and a mobile phone valued at N4,000 on Monday escaped being burnt to death by an irate mob. It was gathered that the boys stole the items inside the St. Paul Anglican Church at Ologbo village in Ikpoba-Okha local government area of Edo State. The timely intervention of the police saved the boys from being lynched by the mob, who have placed tyres on them after beating them severely. The boys were identified as Goodluck Benson, Omoruyi Isaiah and Ediomwan Desmond. However, a mild drama played out when one of the suspects who were arraigned at a magistrate court in the State on a four- count charge of stealing and belonging to an unlawful society called Blade, told Chief Magistrate Esohe Bazuaye that he was 17 and not 19 as written by the police on the charge sheet. This infuriated the magistrate who asked why they were not taken to a juvenile court instead of bringing them to a regular court. The boys told the magistrate that they were from poor homes and that they were not arrested at the crime scene, adding that they confessed to the crime because the mob threatened to kill them. Magistrate Bazuaye appealed with the Pastor in charge of the church, Rev. Johnson Nwatamuojor, to forgive the boys and collaborate with the court to rehabilitate them. Bazuaye told Rev. Johnson that if the suspects were sent to remand, they would become criminals. She said “Has God not given you the assignment to win souls? We can turn the lives of these kids around by making them become something better in the future. “No child is too difficult to be placed on the right path. As a man of God, the church can pay for their upkeep. Their present situation is not their fault. It is the parents. “Don’t give up on them. You have lots of sheep. These are part of the weak ones.” Reacting to the incident, Rev. Johnson noted that he was happy that the suspects were apprehended and he could not stop the police from doing their job. The suspects were later sent to the juvenile court. dailypost.ng/2015/08/03/three-teenagers-escape-being-lynched-over-theft/ Cc: lalasticlala |
The world's population is projected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050 and exceed 11 billion in 2100, with India expected to surpass China as the most populous around seven years from now and Nigeria overtaking the United States to become the world's third largest country around 35 years from now. This was contained in the report that was recently released by the United Nations in New York. Moreover, the report reveals that during the 2015-2050 period, half of the world's population growth is expected to be concentrated in nine countries: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the United States, Indonesia and Uganda. Among the 10 largest countries in the world currently, one is in Africa (Nigeria), five are in Asia (Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, and Pakistan), two are in Latin America (Brazil and Mexico), one is in Northern America (US), and one is in Europe (Russian Federation). "Of these, Nigeria's population, currently the seventh largest in the world, is growing the most rapidly," said the report. Consequently, the population of Nigeria is projected to surpass that of the United States by about 2050, at which point it would become the third largest country in the world. The report also projected that by 2050 the populations of six countries are expected to exceed 300 million: China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the United States. And with the highest rate of population growth, Africa is expected to account for more than half of the world's population growth over the next 35 years. During this period, the report said, the populations of 28 African countries are projected to more than double, and by 2100, 10 African countries are projected to have increased by at least a factor of five: Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Somalia, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia. allafrica.com/stories/201508030405.html Cc: lalasticlala |

The Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) has served a lot of commuters in Lagos and for some; it’s the favourable means of getting around. With its ability to transport a lot of people at the same time, it makes it efficient in terms of reducing traffic in Lagos. In spite of these benefits, some Lagosians still hale the BRT. LATENESS.. Time is money and Lagosians know that. For some, it’s better to use other means of road transport and pay more than wait patiently on a long queue and hope the BRT will be around soon. If there is one thing that annoys Lagosians, it’s the fact that the queue is likely to be a long wait and it’s not uncommon to see tempers flaring due to the lateness of the BRT. OVERCROWDING.. Gone are those days when the BRT would only take passengers that equal the number of seats in the vehicle. With the increased number of commuters, the BRT has become molue 2.0. Lagosians hate the fact that the number of passenger standing in the aisle is almost more than those sitting. BUS STOP.. The BRT has a number of designated bus stops but unfortunately, they are limited. If you are not at those bus-stops you’re likely not going to be able to board the bus. The same also goes for alighting. If it’s not the designated bus stop, you’ll likely have to wait till you reach there and that might be a distance from your intended point of stop. BREAKDOWN.. The BRT has been around for a while but unfortunately it has not been adequately maintained. A visit to the BRT parks in Lagos reveals a lot of abandoned vehicles. If you’re in a BRT and the vehicle develops problem, passengers have to either find another means to continue the journey or wait till another bus is called. Unlike other transport services where the driver might give you part of the money to continue your journey, the case is not the same with the BRT as the ticket cannot be exchanged for money. UNRELIABLE.. With the BRT, you just don’t know whether the bus service will operate on a particular day at a particular park at a specific time. It is just unpredictable and unreliable. If you have a job appointment, it will take a nerve of steel for one to decide to wait to use the BRT that day. The uncertainty and unreliability of the BRT has made a lot of people who are very time conscious to shy away from it. Cc: lalasticlala www.naij.com/499923-5-reasons-lagosians-hate-brt.html

-Madrid - A man and a woman of Nigerian origin have been arrested over claims that they forced Nigerian women into prostitution and deployed voodoo to keep their victims under their control, Spanish police said on Sunday. The two suspects were arrested on a warrant issued by Norway after a Nigerian woman lodged a complaint against them in Oslo. Spanish police said the pair promised their victims, who were living in extreme poverty, a job and that they would cover their travel expenses. They would then force them to become prostitutes. The young Nigerian woman who filed the complaint had herself been lured in 2011 to Spain by a woman who promised her work. When she arrived in Spain, however, she was kidnapped and held in an apartment on the southern edge of Madrid. Her abductor then forced her to work as a prostitute in several Spanish cities, as well as Bordeaux in France and finally Oslo, claiming she was owed a $66 000 debt. "The 'madam' and her accomplices had control over her, using all methods of aggression and threats and resorting to traditional Juju voodoo practices, including animal sacrifices," the police said. In these rites, the victims are forced to take a pledge of obedience, which they are then persuaded into believing that they would fall ill or become insane if they fail to obey, according to Amnesty International. The two suspects were arrested at their home with police finding false identity documents and several objects linked to the rituals there. Six Nigerians including four women were convicted in France last month over similar charges. Also in June, Spanish police dismantled a trafficking ring that they said used voodoo rituals to force women into prostitution.
