InvestmentWorld Bank To Spend Up To $2.8 Billion To Rebuild Nigeria's North-east by zinachidi(op): 8:57pm On Jul 21, 2015
Nigeria's presidency said on
Tuesday the World Bank had pledged to spend up
to US$2.1 billion (S$2.8 billion) to rebuild the north-
east of the country that has been devastated by
Boko Haram militants. President Muhammadu Buhari met with
representatives of the World Bank, the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation, and the World Health
Organisation during a trip to Washington. A World Bank spokeswoman said that during the
meeting, the bank said the sum of US$2.1 billion
could be lent to Nigeria from its development
agency and that support could also come from the
International Bank for Reconstruction and
Development. "Apart from rebuilding the region in terms of
infrastructure, priority must also be given to the
resettlement of internally displaced persons, who
now number over one million," Buhari was quoted
as saying in government statement. The loan would be spent through the World Bank's
International Development Agency and would be
interest-free for the first 10 years. The statement said the World Health Organisation
would spend US$300 million on immunisation
against malaria, while the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation would work with Nigeria's Dangote
Foundation to maintain the record of zero polio
cases for the past year. Buhari met US President Barack Obama on Monday
to discuss how to tackle the insurgency in his first
visit to Washington since his election in March. The Islamist Boko Haram has been waging a six-
year-old insurgency with the aim of carving out a
caliphate in the north of Nigeria, Africa's biggest
economy.

PoliticsNigerian Army Removes Mines From Damaturu-biu Road by zinachidi(op): 7:34pm On Jul 19, 2015
The Nigerian Army this morning stated that its
troops had removed mines planted by suspected Islamist insurgents along the Damaturu-
Biu Road. In a short statement signed by its acting director of
public relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka
Usman, the army disclosed that “a team of Nigerian
Army Special Forces, Explosives Ordinance Devices
with support from Nigeria Police and local
vigilante” collaborated to remove the mines. The statement revealed that the team of mine
removers had found and detonated four
Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs) “planted by
suspected Boko Haram terrorists.” The army encouraged commuters to continue to
use the road, adding that troops were providing
adequate security. “The Nigerian Army wishes to further enjoin the
public to be more security conscious and report
any suspicious persons and movements to the
security agents,” Colonel Usman urged.

PoliticsJonathan’s CSO ‘denied Food, Water, Medication’ In SSS Custody, Says Lawyer by zinachidi(op): 7:27pm On Jul 19, 2015
The Chief Security Officer (CSO) to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Gordon Obua, who is in custody, has been denied his medications despite being diabetic and hypertensive, his lawyer has said. The State Security Service (SSS) took Obua into custody on Thursday in line with investigations into government expenditure on security and oil theft under Jonathan. Counsel to the former CSO, Onochie Onwuegbuna, has said that the SSS was detaining his client in unacceptable conditions. In a statement issued at the weekend, the lawyer said his client was the victim of a witch-hunted by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, in a grand plot to bring down “marked” individuals who were part of the Jonathan administration “in order to implicate them by all means for phantom crimes or offences”. Although he said Obua has been denied food and water by the SSS, TheCable understands that he is on a hunger strike to protest his being held in solitary confinement. The statement said, “On July 16, 2015, (Obua) reported at the office of the Acting Director General by 5pm as directed, and as usual he was kept waiting till about 1am on Friday, July 17, 2015 when the ADG informed him that he would be detained, and he has been in detention since then without being informed what offence (if any) he is alleged to have committed or the reason for his detention. “Our Client is hypertensive and diabetic to the knowledge of his employers, the SSS, and as a result he has been on daily medications to manage these very severe ailments and since his detention, he has completely been denied access to these medications. “Our Client has also been denied access to members of his family, his doctor and his lawyers and even more worrisome is the information obtained by his family that he has not eaten or drank water ever since he was detained.” The statement declared that the “actions of the SSS” and Obua’s detention “constitute undue harassment and gross violation of his fundamental rights to respect for the dignity of his person and personal liberty as guaranteed by Sections 31 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” Onwuegbuna expressed the view that Obua was being harassed unduly because he was made to report at the SSS office every day since July 6, only to be detained in the early hours of Friday, July 17, 2015, “which was public holiday with the knowledge that Monday, July 21, 2015 is also a public holiday.” He said, “The aim was clearly to ensure he is kept in detention for the period and to ensure that the earliest date available to his lawyers to approach the courts to enforce his fundamental right is Tuesday, July 21, 2015. “Our Client is presently languishing in the custody of the SSS without access to his medication, food, water and drugs or to any member of his family, doctors or his lawyers and, in the circumstance, we hereby call on the SSS to immediately release him as he has not been informed (of) the facts and grounds of his detention, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. “The general public is also invited to note that the SSS should be held responsible if anything untoward happens to our client in their custody or subsequently as a consequence of his unlawful detention

TravelBVN: Central Bank Sets Up Centre In South Africa by zinachidi(op): 7:18pm On Jul 19, 2015
Nigeria`s Consul General in South Africa, Uche Ajulu-Okeke, said on Sunday that the Central Bank of Nigeria has approved a centre to conduct biometric verification for Nigerians in South Africa.
Mrs. Ajulu-Okeke said in Johannesburg that the CBN was worried about the number of Nigerians abroad not captured in the Bank Verification Number exercise.

She said the bank approved that the centre, located in Johannesburg, should carry out the exercise to enable Nigerians in South Africa with accounts at home be captured for the BVN.

“The good news is that from South Africa, Nigerians can monitor their accounts at home and feel relaxed that their accounts will not be closed because they were not captured for the BVN,” she said.

The consul-general also said the Consulate, with the approval of the Nigeria Immigration Service, had set up a new passport and visa processing centre in South Africa.

According to her, the centre was in the same building with the one approved by the Central Bank to carry out biometrics verification for BVN.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service has become aware of the difficulties faced by Nigerians who do not have credit cards and who cannot pay for passport and visa services,” he said.

“The NIS has engaged a company, OIS Services, to process passport and visa.

“The company has brought an officer as a Centre Manager of the new passport and visa service centre.

“They are now working in secured format with the Consulate.

“The NIS has set up similar passport centres in London, Beijing, New Delhi, Dubai, New York and is now setting up centres in Washington DC and Atlanta.”

Mrs. Ajulu-Okeke urged Nigerians to use the new centre to process their passports and avoid using agents who might fleece them in the process.
She said the Consulate had been working with the Nigeria Union in South Africa to protect the interest of Nigerians and promote their welfare.

Nairaland GeneralSallah Day Tragedy: Wicked Mother Abandons Her Baby And Absconds – by zinachidi(op): 10:02am On Jul 19, 2015
According to Naij.com guest author Sultan
Abiodun from Abeokuta, a wicked woman
was said to have dropped her baby of less
than a year old with another teenage girl and
ran away, probably because the baby is a
disabled girl. The young girl has understood later that the
woman who gave her the baby had bolted
away. Our correspondent gathered from an eyewitness
that the incident, which happened at Sango Ota
area in Ados odo/Ota local government area of
the state, had since been reported to the police
at Sango.

The eywitness said: “The incident occurred
around 10:00 am on Friday when Muslim
faithfuls are going to the mosque for the prayer. “The woman, whose identity could not be
ascertained got to Ositelu street, Abebi
area,Sango Ota and drop her baby who is not
more than a year for another young girl of about
10 years to help her be looking at her that she
want to buy drinks at the other side of the road. “She said the woman told her to hold her child
for her that she wanted to go and order for soft
drinks at the depot and she will be back soon,
but its quite unfortunate after some hours that
the woman was expected to come back for the
child and she was found wanted.” Speaking on phone with our correspondent, the
young girl confirmed the incident and expressed
regret over her action. “I was just sitting down in from of our house, the
woman came and told me that my child, please
hold my baby for me, I want to go and buy
mineral, I will be back soon. When my mummy
saw the baby in my hand, she asked me whose
baby is that, and I told her that a woman drop her child that she wanted to go and buy mineral. “I played throughout with the child, but when it
was evening time that the woman did not come
back, my mummy and our relatives in the house
started shouting ‘ta lo lomo’ who owns this child,
before somebody told us to take the child to
Baale’s house. The Baale gave us a letter to take the child to the police station which we later did”,
the little girl explained. Our correspondent reliably learnt that the baby
wad taken to the Baale’s house by the woman,
taken along her daughter, who was given the
baby by the eloped mother and some other
relatives.

The Baale’s house was besieged by the residents
of the area and neighbouring areas to catch a
glimpse of the baby girl. The Baale, Alhaji Yahya Lamidi Ajibose after
listening to how the incident occurred directed
that the baby should be taken to the nearest
police station. The people got to the police station around 8:00
pm, according to one of the residents, who does
not want his name in print. When contacted, the DPO of the area denied to
comment on the matter, directing us to the state
police spokesman. “You can call DSP Olumuyiwa for further
information sir. My phone battery got drained
yesterday and uptill now, I have not seen a place
to charge my phone”, he said. A police source confirmed the incident, revealing
that the baby has been ordered by the DPO to be
taken to Ijamido motherless babies’ home,Ota
while investigation continues on the matter.

Nairaland General5 Reasons Why President Buhari Is Tagged 'baba Go Slow'. by zinachidi(op): 9:34am On Jul 19, 2015
The change mantra under which
Presisident Muhammadu Buhari ran his
election campaign was fanatically embraced
by millions of Nigerians who were tired of
the absurdity that had become the norm. Never has Nigeria been more in dire need of
a savior than at this time. Nigerians wanted
change by all means, a better life for
themselves and for their loved ones. But in
less than 2 months, the most popular man in
Nigeria is being tagged ‘Baba Go Slow’

After spending seven weeks in office,
President Muhammadu Buhari and the All
Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration
have come under barrage of criticisms from the
opposition, championed by the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP). The opposition has since May 29, closed marked
Buhari, faulting him left, right and centre.
Nothing the present administration does
appears to get commendations from his critics. Buhari recently rejected a proposal by the
permanent secretary of the state house, Mr.
Nebolisa Emodi, to purchase five new bulletproof
Mercedes S-600 (V222) cars valued at about
N400 million. The president described the purchase as
unnecessary, saying, the ones left behind by the
previous administration were fine. This was
followed by a 50% pay cut he and his vice, Yemi
Osinbajo took, all in a gesture to cut cost. While some persons described the president’s
actions as a good development that other
leaders should follow, the gesture on the other
hand, appears to have attracted the ire of the
PDP. The main opposition party has lashed at Buhari
and his deputy, saying, the cutting of their
salaries will not be the only thing Nigerians are
expecting from them. The party in a statement signed in Abuja on
Tuesday, July 14, by the its secretary, Chief Olisa
Metuh, described the rejecting of the 400m bullet
proof cars and the pay cut by the president as
“cosmetic governance. The opposition has tagged Buhari’s
administration as a government of “all motion
and no movement”. In some quarters, the
president has been called “Baba Go Slow”. In this
regard, let us consider 5 reasons why Baba Go
Slow has been tagged on Buhari’s administration

1) The Escalating Boko Haram insurgency

Prior to the earlier tactics of capturing territories
and declaring them an Islamic caliphate, Boko
Haram has now shifted to a relentless use of
suicide bombings as a new strategy. The wave of
suicide bombings carried out by the sect in
recent times has thrown the nation in a state of panic. Bomb Blast in Garkida Boko Haram has intensified its bombing
campaigns and attacks on religious houses,
markets and public places in Borno, Yobe,
Adamawa, Plateau and Kaduna states among
other places, wreaking havoc on lives and
property worth billions of Naira. The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu,
in a Punch report dated July 10, 2015, lamented
that Boko Haram insurgency had worsened
under President Muhammadu Buhari. He said:“shortly before the inauguration of the
present government, the country had almost
rolled back Boko Haram and its activities in every
part of Nigeria – from Adamawa to Borno to
Yobe.” This same sentiment is shared by some Nigerians
who express fears that the campaign promises
Buhari made to flush out Boko Haram may be
turning into a dream than reality. No doubt, Boko Haram insurgency cost
Jonathan his reelection, if things continue like
this, it may also cost Buhari his presidency too.

2) Fuel Crisis

The fuel crisis witnessed in the last days of the
Goodluck Jonathan administration was one of
the worst in Nigeria’s history. The crisis saw all
sectors of the Nigerian economy come a halt due
to unavailability of diesels and other petroleum
products. Nigerians queuing to buy fuel While the scarcity lingered, the All Progressives
Congress (APC) accused Jonathan of being
insensitive to the plight of Nigerians. It promised
to immediately embark on sweeping reforms in
the petroleum sector immediately it assumes
power. In a tale of deja Vu however, the queues are
beginning to resurface at the petrol stations
under the watch of the same administration that
promised to liberate Nigerians from perennial
scarcity. This has given room for criticism from
the opposition.

3) Delay In Appointment Of Ministers And
Other Officials

More than a month after his
administration began, President Buhari has
given Nigerians the impression that his
administration is yet to locate its bearing by its
failure to decide on key appointments such as
ministers, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), and advisers in key sectors of
the economy. Contrary to his earlier promise to initiate key
appointments immediately his administration
begins, the APC led government has given a list
of reasons to justify the wanton ministerial
delays. The party has ascribed the delays to the
president’s intention to get the appointment right. It says it wants to guard against
appointing the wrong persons in key positions
so as not to disappoint Nigerians. The question begging for answers is, why did
the APC administration not figure this out weeks
ago after realizing it had won the presidential
election? And how long should Nigerians
continue to wait while key sectors of the
country’s economy lie unattended to?

4) Excuses And More Excuses

Since its inception, the APC administration has
earned a reputation for blaming the PDP for its
lapses. Rather than brace up and accept
responsibility for its actions or inactions, the APC
has tied almost all it’s failing to the PDP. The party has constantly dismissed insinuations
in some quarters that President Buhari’s
administration is slow by harping that
the administration cannot clean the “16
years mess of the PDP in 30 days”. An excuse
that can be likened ‘to a story for the gods.’ In another show of storytelling, Buahri in a
Premium Times report of June 15, 2015,
explained the delay in his appointment of
ministers on the late submission of the transition
committee’s report on the previous
administration to him. Hear Him: “I don’t know why people are so anxious about
ministers. But eventually we will have (them). “But the main reason is that I have an interim
committee which I agreed with former President
Jonathan that the ministers of the outgoing
government should hand over their notes or
their documents to this interim committee so that
a position can be prepared for the new government to start from with clear records from
ministers. “But the ministers knew that they were going
but the technocrats, the permanent secretaries
and directors and so on, they know they would
remain. “If anything goes wrong they would be invited
to explain, but unfortunately the outgoing
government did not cooperate.” Rather than focus on implementing its numerous
campaign promises for which they were voted
in office at the centre, APC has chosen is crying
wolf over spilled milk by blaming the past
administration for its shortcoming. This has only
added to the perceptions by some Nigerians that Buhari’s administration is slow.

5) Stagnant Economy

Aware that the APC led administration is less
than two months in office, Nigerians don’t
expect things to turn around immediately, yet,
some have already began to hold Buhari
accountable for some of the economic reforms
he promised to implement in the weeks leading up to the 2015 general elections. Prior to the elections, the then presidential
candidate of the ruling party, described the state
of the economy under the PDP as being in
shambles, he vowed to turn around the
economic prospects of Nigeria if elected in
power by ensuring that Nigerians participate and engage in productive economic activities, in
order to revamp the economy and create jobs
for the teeming Nigerian youths. In a Daily Trust report of January 17, 2015, the
then presidential hopeful at a rally in Jos said: ‘As we all know, agricultural and mining sectors,
which had been the major source of our wealth,
had been neglected for long by successive
administrations. ”Let me assure Nigerians, that if voted into
power, we shall revemp these sectors and make
them a major source of employment
opportunities. In the same vein, at a rally in Lokoja he promised
to revive the Ajaokuta steel company if elected
president. In a PM News report of March 20, 2015, Buhari
at a Town Hall meeting with artisans and
tradesmen held at the Lagos Television Ground
in Ikeja, Lagos, pledged to stabilise the naira if
elected. He pledged to do that by ensuring that
the country’s currency is equal to the dollar. “We will stabilise the exchange rate so that
entrepreneurs will have cheaper operating cost.
This will afford them the opportunity to purchase
raw material for their business easily. We will
ensure that they have the ability to build factory,
employ youths and others. This is common sense. he said Time will fail us to mention his promise of stable
power supply, industries, infrastructures, three
million jobs yearly and numerous other promises
he made while soliciting votes across the nation. After raising so much expectation fro Nigerians,
none of the miracles Buhari promised has
materialized almost two months after. This has
lead to agitations among some who fear that the
present administration is another sad tale of
promise and fail
