An ICFJ research, The State of Technology in Global Newsrooms, discovered that only 29% of MENA newsrooms frequently use various platforms to distribute stories–trailing stories in the remainder of the globe; 56% struggle to build public confidence and 77% are worried about their capacity to produce quality content.



Program Activities FOR International Center for Journalists (ICFJ)/IJNet Arabic Training Network


Phase 1–Virtual Training: Expert ICFJ mentors and a Google coach resulted the IJNet Arabic webinars and were accessible to all MENA reporters. Participants learned important ideas and instruments in gathering and sourcing information, trust and verification, journalism about data, and immersive storytelling. The webinars were held on May 2nd and May 3rd 2018.

Phase 2 – Training of Trainers: The most promising journalists from Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia who participated in the webinars were invited to participate in a two-day Training of Trainers workshop hosted by Google in Dubai, where they learned the skills needed to become digital media trainers.

Phase 3–In-Country Training: Digital media trainers conducted newsroom trainings and workshops with ongoing coaching from specialist mentors for college learners in their home nations. The top trainers also performed training for a wider range of MENA experts at regional press events.

Phase 4 – Expanded Virtual Training: Online webinars for reporters in each of their home nations will be conducted by digital media trainers to boost the amount of local experts trained on Google News Initiative instruments and best practices. There will be four modules covering the training:

Unlike the criminal case for child sexual abuse, which punishes the perpetrator, a civil lawsuit is meant to compensate the victim and his or her family.

A civil suit for child sexual abuse can be based on a number of different legal theories (these different theories are each called a “cause of action”).

Both the perpetrator and the perpetrator’s employers (in some cases) can be sued, either by the child or the child’s parents. This article discusses the various theories that might apply in a child sexual abuse (or “child molestation”) case and how a civil suit can be used to get compensation for the victims of abuse.
Interaction of Criminal and Civil Trials for the Same Abuse

A criminal trial based on child sexual abuse entails criminal prosecution of the perpetrator (the defendant) and perhaps some fines, but does not generally involve compensation for the victim or the victim’s family. A victim or the victim’s family (the plaintiff) can sue the perpetrator in civil court for money damages after the criminal trial is completed.

Depending on the application of a complex rule called collateral estoppel, it may be easier for a plaintiff to win a civil trial if the defendant has been convicted for the same acts in a criminal trial.

However, even if the defendant was not ultimately convicted in a criminal trial, a civil plaintiff suing for the same wrongful and illegal acts might still win a civil trial. This is because a plaintiff in a civil trial must show that it is “more likely than not” the defendant committed the sexual abuse — the prosecution in a criminal trial must show “beyond a reasonable doubt” that the defendant committed the acts. In other words, a jury does not have to be as certain about the defendant’s guilt to find him or her liable in a civil trial.
Who Can Sue?

Both the child and the child’s legal care giver — birth parents or otherwise — can sue for child sexual abuse. The child, usually represented by a parent or other guardian, can sue for the physical, emotional and other harm caused by the abuse. The care givers can sue for the emotional and related harm they have suffered knowing that their child was abused.

The Different Causes of Action in a Child Sexual Abuse Case

There is no one civil cause of action called “child sexual abuse.” Instead, a plaintiff suing for child sexual abuse can include a number of different causes of action in a single lawsuit. As with other cases, the same facts can make a defendant liable under a variety of legal theories. Although finding a defendant liable under multiple theories in a single civil suit does not necessarily mean a plaintiff will receive more in the way of money damages, it does mean the plaintiff has a better chance of winning the case.

The causes of action most likely to fit the facts in a child sexual abuse case are (the linked pages describe the requirements of each civil claim in detail): assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

Additionally, depending on the facts of the case, the defendant might be potentially liable for false imprisonment, if he or she threatened the child in some way or otherwise confined the child to a particular area.

An employer who failed to properly screen or monitor an employee that sexually abused a child could also be found liable under a negligent hiring or retention theory.

It is worth noting that intentional torts like assault and battery ordinarily require that the plaintiff did not consent to the defendant’s act. But even if a child in some way seemingly gave permission to the defendant to commit sexual abuse, the law holds that a child is incapable of giving valid consent to sexual acts.

The causes of action discussed here are not the final word. A skilled and creative plaintiff’s attorney could potentially find any number of other legal theories that fit the facts of a case. Causes of action are intended to be flexible — society and the legal system have long recognized that a defendant that has clearly done something wrong should not escape liability simply because his or her actions do not fit a pre-existing legal mold.
Damages in a Child Sexual Abuse Case

Regardless of the legal theory, the primary monetary damages in a child sexual abuse case will come from the physical and emotional harm the child victim suffered and will continue to suffer, as well as the emotional harm the care givers suffered and will suffer.

It is realistic to expect that a jury will sympathize with the victim and his or her family if the defendant is found liable, which can lead to large damage awards for unquantifiable, subjective injuries like emotional pain and suffering. Expert testimony may be necessary to inform a jury of what the estimated cost of, for example, years of therapy might be.

If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you? With these rights in mind, do you wish to speak to me?”

So what happens if the officer doesn’t read you your Miranda Rights?

Unfortunately, if an officer doesn’t read your Miranda Rights, it’s not a get-out-of-jail-free card. Many times, nothing happens. An officer isn’t required to read you your rights until you are in custody and he or she is asking you questions about the case. So, if the officer asks you questions at a time that you are not considered in custody, the fact that you weren’t read your Miranda Rights won’t have any impact on your case at all.

If you meet all of the following requirements, then the remedy for not reading your Miranda Rights is to suppress your statements. This means that the police and prosecutors could not use the statements that you gave them against you in court.

You made statements to the police.

In order for the police to have violated your Miranda rights, you must have made statements to them. If no statements were made, it is not possible for them to have committed a violation of taking your statement without having read you your rights.

Expanding and sustaining the end FGM/C campaign through existing School Clubs Female genital mutilation (FGM), a form of gender-based violence, is known as a harmful traditional practice (OHCHR) and is a violation of
human rights.

The available data indicates that at least 200 million women and girls across 30 countries have undergone the practice (UNICEF, 2016).

The practice of FGM is concentrated in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, however there have been reports of the practice in Europe, Australia and North America within diaspora communities (UNICEF, 2016).
FGM is described as “all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female Instruments, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons” (WHO, 2016).

The practice has no health benefits and has consequences in all aspects of a female’s life – including health and education. FGM can also act as a precursor to early/child marriage, which is also a violation of human rights and can even be considered slavery in some situations (Turner, 2016).

It has been said by Nowak (2008), former Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, that “the pain inflicted by FGM does not stop with the initial procedure, but often continues as ongoing torture throughout a woman’s life.”
Mainstreaming FGM/C in existing school club programmes will help sustain the campaign, it involves analysing how FGM/C impacts a sector and determining how the sector should respond based on its comparative
advantage.

Also Mainstreaming FGM/C into the education sector will help to shape young people’s attitudes and influence their future behaviour.



Some of the strategies for mainstreaming FGM/C into the education sector include:
1. Inclusion in the Curriculum: By integrating FGM into formal/non-formal education, the topic is less of a taboo and young people can receive accurate information. .

2. Training of teachers: When teachers are trained they can educate young people and also support those at risk of undergoing or have already undergone FGM/C. .

3. Formation of Anti-FGM/C Clubs: This involves training of students and mobilising them to form a Club that focuses solely on FGM/C activities.

4. Partnering with School Clubs: Training the members of existing school clubs, health, press, debate, etc. to integrate FGM/C education into their regular activities .

5. Education sector stakeholders should take the lead on all FGM/C activities in the education sector, including projects implemented by external partners.

6. In Imo State Nigeria, the Young Social media advocates are using Peer Educators Club to tackle #FGM.

This sound weird but when it comes to technology, nothing is impossible except it has not been reasoned. According to US researchers, A new smartphone device can analyze a man’s sperm quality and let him know in a matter of minutes whether he suffers from infertility.


This technology aims to make it easier for men to test their sperm at home because 40% of fertility problems are due to poor quality sperm which affects over 45million couples worldwide.


The test, however, “can analyze a video of an undiluted, unwashed semen sample in less than five seconds.”
It works by using a combination of an optical attachment that can connect to a smartphone and a disposable device for loading a semen sample, said the report.


Researchers tested the device using 350 semen specimens at the Massachusetts General Hospital Fertility Center.

The smartphone-based device detected abnormal semen samples — based on World Health Organization thresholds on sperm concentration and motility — with an accuracy of 98 percent.
The cost of the materials used to assemble it came to $4.45.

The device is not yet available to the public and is still in the prototype stage.

WhatsApp is finally rolling out the two-step verification feature to every users of its Android, iOS, and Windows Phone apps. The security feature was previously available to only beta users for some time now, but it has now been made official.

This feature allows you to create a six-digit pass-code that’ll be required whenever your phone number is being verified on the app. The two-step verification feature can be activated by going to Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable.


You’ll also be able to add your e-mail address, although it’s optional but can be useful in case you ever forget your pass-code.

WhatsApp won’t be able to verify the accuracy of the email address you enter, so you need to enter it carefully to make sure that you’re not locked out of your account if you forget your pass-code.

Despite the fact that the Internet connection has been completely shut down in the northwest and southwest of Cameroon (its two main English-speaking regions) for the past 24 days now, a 17-year-old Cameroonian has defied the odds to emerge as the first African to win Google’s Code-In Competition — a competition that allows pre-university students between the ages of 13 and 17 complete tasks specified by partner open source organizations which include Drupal, Wikimedia, Sugar Labs to name a few.



Collins won under the “OpenMRS” category; an open source enterprise electronic medical record system platform.



Yes, he was affected by the Internet blockade imposed by the Cameroon Government, but did he let that stop him?

He had to travel to another town to submit his solution.

In his words:

“When GCI started, I was anxious and nervous to some extent. I had to find ways to turn my nervousness into creativity and fun. Participating was super exciting and really exhausting, and at the end, I discovered that I gained a whole new level of experience in the Open source world.”

Collins Nji will be traveling to the Google Headquarters in Mountain View, CA to meet the Google Open Source team and other members of the Google Software Engineering team for a tour of Silicon Valley finest.

Facebook wants to own every single thing you do on the internet. Whether you go online to chat with friends, look at photos, watch a few videos, or even check your weather forecast.

The weather forecast feature went live yesterday on its mobile app and would eventually make its way to your Newsfeed. Until then, here is how you can access the feature on your Android or iOS device.

Open the Facebook app on your Android or iOS device.

Select the three-line icon on the top right on Android, bottom right on iOS

Scroll down to the Apps section, then click on See More.

Finally, select Weather.



This only works when your GPS is turned on. You can also customize the city for the forecast, as well as change between Fahrenheit and Celsius by opening the Settings gear at the top of your screen.
