Les: I've been pondering on this maself. I miss Nitel of the good old days. This is just ma thought and not a fact. The amount an average primarY skul pupil spends in a month to buy airtime might be half if not upto wat nitel bills in a month, the total amount a sec skul student spends in a month to recharge might be upto twice of wat nitel bills in a month if not above it. A uni student, ofcourse will be higher. Finally coming to dads and mums and other young boys, young ladies and young men especially those that are into business. The amount they spend in a month is incomparable to wat nitel bills 4 a month. Those days, i dont think nitel bills upto 3k in a month despite the fact you'll make calls witout any interruption (one minute remaining-very annoying), but ma dad gives me 3k to buy mtn airtime 1.5k, 2 at once o in the morning alone plus other subsequent ones dat follows as the day goes by-750, 400- i don think he goes below dat. The worst fact is dat 4 example, Mtn is owned by S.A, all this money is being used to boost their own economy, imagine where 9ja makes this kind of revenue through communication sector(nitel) under good governance, you know d kind projects it would have covered? I weep how 9ja relegates their indigenous technology for foreign ones- toothpicks(am pretty sure our forefather didn't know wat toothpick is but they ate bigger animals like elephants). If only 9ja'll bring back networks like nitel where one pays only at month ends at minimal cost, this would have been an advantage to us, afterall that's how other countries operate- USA, etc!
as for the last sentence, it will not happen...NOT NOW. We've been sold out. You need to know how many people get paid from the MTN contract. I'm a nationalist so i don't encourage their biz. Thoug it may not count for anytin but i'm happy i did

Instead of complaining, think about launching your own mobile telecoms firms. So much opportunities in this country

ocman: This is just a clear proof that Nigeria is a talkative country. We talk too much and do less. much words, less action. That is why we are this way. Millions of words and No action. Billions of words in campaign manifestos and lofty promises, yet nothing...we brag on how to tackle boko haram yet nothing to show. Obama said just few words about osama bin laden, the rest was action

Naija cant talk on phone, you better put it like this, Those people are ripping Nigerians..They are thieves....While in Naija , I never spent 1 hour on phone before but whenever i calculate the amount of air time i buy in a month, is going 15k.....but in UK or Yankee i can talk for good 1 hour witout stopping and I only pay 50$ for the whole month wit internet.......check out the diff

PapaBrowne: Ok. So our average monthly spend(ARPU) on phone time is 1011 Naira. And the number of phones is 102 Million. Nice info. Luv it.

The world bank tells us that 70%(112 Million) of the population lives on lass than $2 a day which equates to 9600 Naira per month.

Now is it possible that poor people spend an average of 10% of their in come on calls? Dem never chop. Never pay rent. Never buy cloth. But get to spend 10% of their income on clothes. 2 dollar per day my foot.

I've been going around asking bike riders how much they earn on average daily and it is between 3000-6000 Naira daily in the south south! 2 Dollar per day my foot.

Best analysis ever.....
Such statistics should serve as the perfect index for determining the poverty rate. Because it has a direct relationship with human financial activity. 2 dollar my bom bom indeed.

obadiah777: let me tell you a story about someone i know. lived in england for 20 years. swore on his life that he will never ever step foot on nigerian soil again because he just didnt have a great time growing up as a teen in nigeria before he left for london ( where he was born ). so for 20 years he never step foot in nigeria. then by some mere coincidence he was invited to nigeria by a family member that he liked so much. this was 2009. when he set foot on naija soil. after 2 weeks in nigeria he decided that he hates britain and he is never going back again. he took a trip to britain, sold all his stuff and relocated to nigeria. he cant stop singing the praise of nigeria everytime i talk to him. he hates britain now. when he goes there he says after a few hours he wants to return back to naija. funny story ? LOL but true

U must hate d uk. us too? And maybe other developed countries u haven't got the chance to build a life in, yh?

So you're trying to convice me that an okada man makes about N72,000 monthly after all expenses removed? Yet we talk about unemployment, WOW. Well I guess fuel subsidy shouldn't be a problem after all because going by the usual 70/30 ratio, they're are making about N95,000 monthly... NICE wink wink wink grin grin grin

thats very correct cos I knw of a bus driver sustains his 3 daugthers in a Federal university with the proceeds from his bus business... 2 dollar my foot

Bros open your eyes very very well. Many of these okada guys have built houses. Have you ever seen a bus driver eaten or declaring beer at the end of everyday? The people who really suffer in Nigeria are young graduates who cannot do these kind of jobs and have to carry their CVs all over the place looking for office work. But if you are in lagos, you will find out many of these okada guys are graduates. Yes, graduates. They make good money bro.

Ok, no doubt. All I'm saying in essence is that while I do not doubt what you're saying, it still doesn't mean that A HUGE CHUNK, about 60% of folks live below poverty line. Those folks living in rural areas way under poverty is what the aggregate result of the $2pd. Like I stated before, the $2pd isn't individual, but an average of all incomes at various levels. I know it's hard for people to accept, while Nigeria is a blessed nation with all sorts of resources(Land, Capital, Human, Natural), we're a POOR nation. Don't let a few things deceive you, Nigeria has a population of 162+million, but with a GDP of +$230billion, do the math.

Re: Nigerians Spent N603.2bn On Phone Calls In Six Months - Investigation by Solozzo(m): 11:48pm On Aug 18, 2012
manny4life:

Look, that's why I said his calculation is wrong.

First, there's a difference between revenue and income although both are earnings. What the world bank said is, "lives on $2pd" which is net income, NOT revenues.

Secondly, like I stated, he claimed "102million phones", which I said is "VAGUE", because 102million phones doesn't state the true/actual number of subscribers. Hypothetically speaking if one subscriber has 2phones, technically, that's 51million true subscribers and you can evaluate the subscribers base upon the WBG figures.

Thirdly, he said "The world bank tells us that 70%(112 Million) of the population lives on lass than $2 a day which equates to 9600 Naira per month." How can you equate 70% of true population (lives), against number of phones, rather than subscribers? Secondly, if it's on subscribers level, that's still @ 63.75%, if we recalculate and adjust the 63.75 to 70% (about 6.25% points) to other variables, we can see his calculation is way off course.

Fourthly, he claimed "Now is it possible that poor people spend an average of 10% of their in come on calls? Dem never chop. Never pay rent. Never buy cloth. But get to spend 10% of their income on clothes. 2 dollar per day my foot." How come does he use the word "AVERAGE", then again, say "the poor", isn't the average supposedly "Wealthy" + "Rich" + "Average" + "Poor" + "Beyond Poor and Homeless"/by all these variables? If he wants to go by "POOR" index, like someone suggested, that's a totally different calculation altogether. A different survey should suggest different income levels as against cell card purchase.

Fifth, he said "I've been going around asking bike riders how much they earn on average daily and it is between 3000-6000 Naira daily in the south south! 2 Dollar per day my foot." I can't stress this enough, this is their revenues, NOT income. Don't these folks have fixed/variable + overhead expenses? Come on now, this isn't the true state of things, if we have to calculate things, LET'S BE HONEST WITH OURSELVES.

It's difficult to calculate how much Nigerians spend on the average per day. You may gain some insight this way. 2$ is about 320naira. How much does a plate of food cost, how about transport cost, cosmetics, phone calls, cost of maintains home , children, contributions to social links as well as soft drinks beer, and other sweetmouths? Value each item even if not bought on the market. Remember medicines, native healer pastor and religious activities. Add up in a month for about 3 to 6 months find verge, then work it down to per day.

At first it sounded big but when we worked average phone cost of 660naira per month per Nigerian it is not so bad. This equates about 4$ a month on the average. Abroad In western countries, average is definitely more than this.
