Opc- CBN Wants To Weaken The Economy Of Lagos. by bashr8: 1:50am On Aug 17, 2012

Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, had said that recent events in the country were pointers to an imminent disintegration, urging the Federal Government to do something immediately to save the country from collapse.

The group has also accused the leadership of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, of operating discriminatory monetary policy, with the on-going cashless economy in Lagos, without extending same to other parts of the country.

President of OPC, Dr. Frederich Fasehun, who addressed newsmen in Lagos, raised alarm that the unresolved problems of Boko Haram; the threat of the group to President Goodluck Jonathan; corruption and the economicy policy of CBN under the leadership of Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi were issues that are capable of breaking up a country.

He said, “We are all aware of these unholy facts in our national life. But we seem un-bothered about what happens to Nigeria, the Black man’s potential superpowers. Everybody seems to want to stop Nigeria from jumping out of this trouble boat. Everybody is thinking of his interest above national interest. Nobody seems genuinely committed to the unity of Nigeria.

“The factors that unite civilised people in developed countries today have served to disunite us and destroy our country. The lack of respect for the country percolates down the entire system. There is no more respect for our institutions. We carry on like culture less barbarians,” he said.

He called on Nigerians to review their contributions “to this disharmonious situation and pull country back from the brinks. No country has ever survived two civil wars. We have experienced one. Another civil war will be Nigeria’s Armageddon.”

On the cashless policy, Fasehun condemned CBN decision, noting that it was aimed at weaken the economy of the Southwest.

He queried why the monetary policy applicable to Lagos was not applicable to Abuja and Kano, ‘a renowned commercial centre.”

“Mallam Sanusi, Governor of CBN, who introduced a so-called cashless policy that he dares not import to his home in the North, has achieved the aim of his paymasters, to slow down this region economically. And we sounded the alarm when this policy first came on stream. Now we have a cashless policy, which cannot be implemented in Kano or Abuja, being rammed down the throat of the nation’s economic hub in Lagos.

Can somebody help me, How is the cashless policy going to run down Lagos/SW economy? Am I missing something?

If a policy like that is going to be tested, does it not make sense to start from Lagos with highest level of internet penetration? If Sanusi had tested this starting with Kano, what would Fasheun have said(I seriously hope he was misquoted or that the poster is being mischievous)? I am sure they will be shouting nepotism by now. When telcos like MTN and ECONET started operations, was it not in Lagos they started? All the major internet backbone connecting Nigeria to the world, are they not in Lagos? What economy is in Abuja and Kano that can be compared to Lagos?

This is yet again another reason Nigeria needs to pursue privately led economy because everything done by government is always viewed with suspicion by ethnic groups depending on who is running the affairs of the particular office. The damage to our psyche is too much already. Nigeria is in need of leadership so that we can make these tribalists irrelevant in our national life, for good.
