Nigeria Drives Away Foreign Companies

Already many western companies are wondering weather it is safe to invest in Nigeria with the decision to arrest three Pfizer workers. I completely understand while we have to stop such practices however we have to do it in a civil manner as it might stop investment. I read an article on shupee.com which already shows the world fears Nigeria in terms of business especially the Pfizer issue.

There was a meningitis epidemic in Nigeria in the mid 90s,the test drug"trovan" was administered to these children.
Re: The Decision To Arrest Three Pfizer Workers by Seun(m): 2:09pm On Dec 28, 2007
If 12,000 children died during a meningitis epidemic, is it not meningitis that killed them?

Illiteracy na evil illness ooo, LMAO!!!!

Pfizer contended that its researchers traveled to Kano with a purely philanthropic motive, to help fight the epidemic, which ultimately killed more than 15,000 Africans. The committee rejected that explanation, pointing out that Pfizer physicians completed their trial and left while "the epidemic was still raging."

The panel concluded that the experiment violated Nigerian law, the international Declaration of Helsinki that governs ethical medical research and the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Five children died after being treated with the experimental antibiotic and others showed signs of arthritis, although there is no evidence the drug played a part. Six children died while taking a comparison drug.

Re: The Decision To Arrest Three Pfizer Workers by hollandis(f): 2:26pm On Dec 28, 2007
Of course the Children treated with trova drugs were severely ill with meningitis, those who had some symptoms of the disease had various levels of deformities upon administration of the drugs, others that were suspected to have this disease were given these drugs. Many of them died.
Kano State and some other states in the North rejected polio vaccine.why?Because of the  mproblems from this experimental drug. The government is spending so much on public enlightenment across Kano State in order to control the situation BTW we are deviating from the comments of the original poster. The 3 staffs failed to appear in court, hence they were arrested.
No wahala

this is shocking:

The FDA never approved Trovan for use in treating American children. After being cleared for adult use in 1997, the drug quickly became one of the most prescribed antibiotics in the United States. But Trovan was later associated with reports of liver damage and deaths,
leading the FDA to severely restrict its use in 1999. European regulators banned the drug.

It is criminal to use a drug that is already BANNED on Nigeria kids.

The families sued Pfizer in federal court in New York in 2001, alleging that the company had exposed the children to "cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment."

A U.S. judge dismissed the suit last summer, saying U.S. courts lacked jurisdiction. Kusel is appealing.

"A report like this does not get suppressed without someone high up being involved," she said.

Trust US, when it concerns BLACKman to get justice: U.S. courts lacked jurisdiction

When its US seeking 419 to be punished. There is jurisdiction.

Only a fool will trust the US.

Re: The Decision To Arrest Three Pfizer Workers by Seun(m): 3:00pm On Dec 28, 2007
Five children died after being treated with the experimental antibiotic and others showed signs of arthritis, although there is no evidence the drug played a part. Six children died while taking a comparison drug.

While the death of 5 children is a terrible thing, the evidence does not suggest it was caused by the drug.
The employees of Pfizer were arrested because the company did not respond to the court's summon.
Re: The Decision To Arrest Three Pfizer Workers by Iman3(m): 3:01pm On Dec 28, 2007
@Don1

The link tells us that the drug was administered on "nearly 100 children".How you extracted from that, the relation to the claim that Pfizer killed 12,000 children is puzzling .What has Pfizer to do with the thousands of meningitis deaths?

Re: The Decision To Arrest Three Pfizer Workers by Don1DeMaco: 3:26pm On Dec 28, 2007
the link was just to show the pfizer prob with nigeria and not specifically talking about 12000 nigerian children, so sorry if i misled u there, my point is if a company comes here and does something contrary to our laws/ unethical we shouldnt turn a blind eye all in the name of foreign investments, an ensure the company is brought to book. i guess dats the main point for posting the thread in the first place? i might be wrong again? who knows??

The drugs had severe complications .It increased the risk of premature death.
Or Seun ,are you saying that an HIV+ fellow is better dead than alive angry

babasin:

The Trovan incident in Kano occured in 1996, 3 yrs before the drug was banned in Europe. Your statement above is misleading and false.

Who will take the Kano state government to court? Under its jurisdiction more than 15,000 children died of preventable meningitis and yet we are more interested in the 5 or 6 who died while on Trovan. The articles clearly state that those placed on the drug were already severely ill and most likely would have died anyway as children placed on the placebo also reportedly died!
Re: The Decision To Arrest Three Pfizer Workers by hollandis(f): 3:41pm On Dec 28, 2007
and the drugs ensured they died quickly
Re: The Decision To Arrest Three Pfizer Workers by Don1DeMaco: 3:48pm On Dec 28, 2007
the point is they should go and defend themselves in the court of law, abi we no dey follow due process again and clear themselves and their company from guilt, its a civil case and they have been sued, nobody is saying they are guilty all im saying is if u are found wanting u should be brought to justice no matter who u are, whether home based or foreign, dats my take

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7159671.stm

abi they no fit carry company go court for suspected wrong doing again

hollandis:

But you have no evidence to show that at all. You are making claims with no evidence to support the claims. What is to say that the drugs in this case did not prolong the lives of the kids involved instead?? Drugs are tested here on people on a daily basis. Infact, it is a way to make money for some college students. Sure they broke the law but for you to come in to level claims that are baseless just out of bias makes your argument ridiculous.

Five children died after using the unapproved drug. Six died after using the approved drug. Sounds pretty inane.
Re: The Decision To Arrest Three Pfizer Workers by Don1DeMaco: 10:39am On Dec 29, 2007
dats not the point seun, the point is agrived families have decided to take the company to court suing it for d loss of their children, is dat now a bad thing in this country. Nigeria dey intervene now u guys are still complaining, if nigerians start dying for on suspicious reasons or the other u will say the government is insensittive. na wah 4 una ooo

let the company got to court and clear its name chikena abi dat one na bad thing again

Point of correction Seun thats not the original article, maybe you should spend some time fact checking…Your comment above shows just how little you actually do know about this case and the lawsuits that have arisen as a result.

DUMMY BOY,the original poster talked abouth the company, the laws and its implication on future investment ? Was the original link ,the same as that posted by Seun? Don who posted a similar link, clarified issues .Did I post any link?No I didnt,I simply asked him to do a little bit of fact checking.I would have worded differently
Most people wouldnt know a question from a statement .I know you are one of them
Village boy,go and return to your clique, they earnestly anticipate your arrival to debate and sell ignorantly.
But again i understand your problem

This IQ of a thing
if x represents IQ
Then you IQ IS -1 > x < 0

let me make things easier fo you

please see how foolish you can be are

Your mental age is -2 and lets assume your physical age is 26
Let me use inequalities to deduce your IQ value

-2x > 26
divide both sides by -2 in order to leave x on the left side alone

-2x/2 >26/-2
when we simplify( remember to reverse the symbols )we get
x is less than -13
x < -13
what a shame your IQ is less than -13 (far away from the standard minimum of 10)
