[b].-Billion Dollar "Eko Atlantic City" Project Caused Fatal Atlantic Ocean Surge That Killed 16 People In Lagos

Posted: August 19, 2012 - 14:44

By SaharaReporters, New York

A powerful ocean tide yesterday swept away 16 people in Lagos . So far, 6 bodies have been recovered including that of a six year old girl.

Precisely a month ago, SaharaReporters released a series of photos depicting a dangerous trend on Lagos beach fronts due to the mindless dredging of the Lagos beach fronts for construction of the Eko Atlantic City. A project planned and executed to create luxury homes for some 400,000 super rich and powerful Nigerians.

Our photonews warned that an environmental disaster on the beaches as a result of the dredging occasioned by the ongoing project was just days away.

Last night the ocean conquered the boundary between it and the Kuramo Beach, sweeping away 16 residents, all of them presumed dead at this point.

The vicious current first assaulted its neighboring Kuramo Beach near Goshen Estate and later spread to Alpha Beach, Mayegun and Badagry waterfronts.

Several people have been displaced, and Lagos officials are capitalizing on the tragedy to eliminate several homes and small businesses owned poor people by blaming them for the tragic ocean storm.

Several small business owners and residents in the area told Saharareporters that the wave happens every year, but blamed this years ferocity on the construction of the new "Eko Atlantic City". The said the dredging ultimately empowered the Atlantic ocean's discharge of its tidal wave to maximum width and places, thereby causing the havoc yesterday.

The tide to forcefully pull down its border with the Kuramo beach.

The Lagos state government has deployed Policemen this morning to cordon off the Kuramo beach, while executing the Lagos State Government’s order to forcefully eject people from the area.

1. The article gives no factual proof as they how eco atlantic caused this
2. americans died in the millions building their country. No great work of man has gone without human sacrifice. This surge is exactly what Eco Atlantic will be preventing in the future.

The ocean surge shows that the work done @ Bar Beach was successful.

I first experienced this ocean surge in 1986. Usually the ocean takes over Bar Beach, Ahmadu Bello Road and most of Victoria Island. It's been recurring from time to time. The fact that this time the ocean took over neighbouring Kuramo Beach, without affecting Bar Beach and Victoria Island proper makes me suspect that the sea walls at Bar Beach did their job.

The ocean surge problem in that area predates the Eko Atlantic project by about 2 decades.

19naia: My first thought was the same as yours but also sometimes it can come from distant bad winds in the ocean...I Searched on a web site "Latest earthquakes in the world-past 7 days." Just type that into google or so and there is a USGS (united states geological survey) list of all the significant quakes in the world..I checkit every day........The list shows an earthquake in the mid atlantic fault right on same latitude as nigerian coast..It was 5.2 quake aug 17 and is big enough to make small surge to reach lagos and even delta coastal regions. The 1st report was august 18, so maybe it was from august 17 event which took many hours to reach lagos..It is possible that offshore underwater ridges near lagos could have swelled the surge into lagos area....This is not an official report, only my own independant considerations....Be safe you ocean dwelling people and maybe Naija government has been right to remove all the waterfront settlers in lagos..I hope the government will offer alternative resettlement and not just evict them to wander lost....

Somebody is gathering evidence from the nutters on NL to write an article. Sahara reporters should be careful about which unsubstantiated report theu feature. Nigerian's should stop this lazy journalism and do research. Which crook of a marine expert gave this opinion? Growing up, bar beach was a decent beach before the waves got violent. Even then we used to have surges. This recent surge that is restricted to kuramo is a blessing. Quite frankly the population of people on the island is not normal. All the sandfill going on is a disaster waiting to happen and a waste of money. The LASG should make sure they are not giving land on water ways and disaster prone areas. Quite frankly it will be safer to live on Eko atlantic city than some sandfilled crap they are selling these days.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/usc000c1np.php Check that link, it gives a better explanation. there was a 5.2 magnitude under ocean earthquake off west africa coast last week. its close enough to cause tsunami around west africa coast.
