South west Agitators Want to Break Up the Country" -

Many Nigerians are calling for a national conference where we could discuss issues of mutual interest for the survival of the country. Do you think such a call is necessary now that we’re about to review the constitution?

The call is not only uncalled for, but it’s unnecessary. It is dangerous because those who have been agitating for it in the last 20 years have not come out to tell us what their endgame is. What do they want out of the conference? The problems of Nigeria have been with us for a long time. In any case there is no country without political, economic or social problems. And if anybody imagined that such a big talk shop where we would come and abuse ourselves is the solution to our problems, then such people should have their heads checked. The real intention, focus and source of the agitation for a national conference are from the South-west. What they want is a break-up of Nigeria but they do not want to pay for the break-up of the country. They want Nigeria to break so that they can go with all the benefits that Nigeria has had to confer from 1914 till date. They have advanced economy, they have infrastructure and Lagos is the centre of banking.

Some Nigerians have also suggested the adoption of the six geo-political zones in the country as federating units as a way of addressing our political and developmental challenges.

It is totally unreasonable for anybody to imagine that the so-called geo-political zones as it is now can be turned into federating units or be made constitutionally operating units. Going by the 2006 census, the North-west has a population of over 36 million, which is now over 40 million as at today because of the rate of growth of our population. The South-east had 15 million. So what you’re saying in essence is that the North-west, with a population of 36 million should be equated with the South-east with a population of 15 million? Is that what you call a solution to the problem? The idea is so disgusting, and it shows the kind of hypocrisy, which permeates the political leadership in the country and the PDP in particular.

What is your take on the call for fiscal federalism?

There is no state in Nigeria, which was created as a result of agitation by the people of the state. Every one of them was created by the federal government. So when you talk about fiscal federalism just because it benefits some certain states, which control the media, tell me what would happen if tomorrow the federal government ceases to exist? Are you telling me the South-west itself can survive without the support of the federal government? No state in Nigeria today, except perhaps Lagos, can survive on its own resources. Look at the Niger Delta states, they already enjoy large chunk of federal resources through the current revenue sharing formula. Bayelsa gets N47 billion a month and has a population of one million. Kaduna State, which has a population of over six million, gets N2.5 billion a month. Isn’t that difference enough? The 13 per cent derivation given to oil producing states is money belonging to the federal government. There is no state in the country which has a local government on the sea. Resources from the sea constitute 70 per cent of our oil revenue. The Supreme Court of Nigeria also has a subsisting judgement, which also says so. So how come you’re talking about fiscal federalism and you’re not talking about the current revenue allocation formula? It shows you the sheer hypocrisy of the Nigerian political class.

What is your take on state police?

I don’t support it; I don’t think it’s practicable. If you have state police in a state like Lagos, tell me how many Lagosians are in the police that would police Lagos? How many people from Kano are in the police to be able to police Kano and contain the menace of Boko Haram and other problems? You see, there is insincerity. Those agitating for it think they can break up the country peacefully. But let them go into history. There is no country in history that has been broken up peacefully.

These four most cardinal points would make this country move forward and yet all of them are been rejected by the Northern Elite for the simple fact that they fear the south would progress and eventually push for a split from their lazy asses. They are not interested in progress for themselves because they have zilch aspirations and it comes from their culture. But they want to prevent us from progressing also, that's the painful part!!

The only reason they reject state police is the fear that southerners would over equip them probably even better than the Armed Forces.

It just sad. Its like been stuck with a drunk who refuses to work, feeds on you and then puts all his energy into preventing you from making more progress so you don't get enough money to move into a new house. Sad. The thing though is that progress can be delayed but it cant be stopped.

South-west are unsure if they want the country to break up. Let's not be decieved. What the South-west wants is a form of arrangement where we form a loose federation. This was exactly their position in 1966 conference. Had it been that they want the country to break up, they would have teamed up with similar agitators in the south. Rather they do every thing within thier means to suppress such groups in the south.
