Christ’s Teaching On Earthly Acquisitions And Wealth by Nobody: 2:06am On Aug 27, 2012
For the next two weeks we shall be considering what the Lord Jesus and His apostles taught about wild acquisitions of earthly possessions. This has become necessary because of the trend in today’s church where a lot of emphasis is placed on financial prosperity at the detriment of eternal prosperity. Many like the Jewish leaders of our Lord Jesus’ days, associate material blessings as a sign of God’s special favour (Luke 16:14). This assumption is however soundly rejected by the Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 18:24-25, “And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”
Very many believers have been deceived and are being deceived by Satan through worldly pastors who occupy our pulpits today. Their false teachings about wealth are leading many believers astray from the path of eternal life. For the first part of this discourse, we shall consider the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ on wealth and for the second part we will look at what His apostles taught on the same subject. Quotations for this first part will be taken from the gospels, since we have most our Lord’s direct teaching while here physically from these gospel books.
Matthew 6:19-24 “9 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
Our Lord from these passages clearly admonishes us to lay our treasures in heaven. He is clearly against the accumulation of earthly acquisitions of wealth and riches because of the dangers they portend to believers. Here are some of them.
1. They remove our focus from Him and heaven (verse 21).
2. As a result of the demonic powers (this stems from greedy hearts) associated with possessions, many who pursue them have become enslaved to them (verse 24).
3. They are obstacles to both salvation and discipleship (Matthew 19:24 “And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” Matthew 13:22 “He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.”)
4. They give false sense of security. Luke 12:15 “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
5. A believer who searches for riches usually experiences a choked spiritual life. Luke 8:14” And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.”
6. Riches make our hearts more attached to earthly things than to our Lord Jesus Christ and the hope of His return. In Luke 17:28-33, our Lord Jesus reminded His listeners of the tragic error of Lot’s wife who placed her affection upon an earthly society and possession rather than upon a heavenly one. Her reason for turning back was because her heart was still in Sodom.
Conclusion
The righteous are obligated by the Lord to develop a proper attitude towards the use of our possessions by being faithful (Luke 16:11). Believers who possess wealth and material goods must see themselves as no longer rich, but merely as stewards of that which belongs to God (Luke 12:31-48). Every believer in Christ should examine his or her heart by asking and answering these questions sincerely. Am I a greedy or selfish person? Do I yearn for abundance of material possessions? Do I crave for the honour, presence and power that often come from gaining great wealth? Let me once again remind our readers of the saying of the Lord Jesus to the rich fool in
Luke 12: 15 and 20 “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
“But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?”
Think about these.
God bless you.

I'm happy to read this post. In addition, Jesus didn't say we shouldn't be rich. He's saying that we shouldn't put all our heart towards acquiring wealth for by strenght shall no man prevail. Learn to cast all your cares upon GOD. GOD knows that we need money-money answereth all things BUT THE LOVE OF MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL.
