FrontPageLawyer: For many, learning to write fluently in English is much more challenging than learning to speak fluently. written communications can come much more slowly in English than spoken communications.

on this forum, I have come to realize that mistakes are not permitted in English writing. It is a taboo even though typographical errors are allowed in some cases. So many members have fallen victim including me on "typographical errors". Yesterday I saw a member's comment on a particular thread “picture of AY and wife in New York City”. He erred while commenting, I said to myself in laughter "this person has murdered English language and he will find no sleep" before I could refresh page 2, the thread has already jumped to page 4 and insult keeps cascading, members capitalizing on the mistake made. Attention was immediately shifted from the main topic and the focus was on this erring member until the thread got to page 10. One good thing is that, you'll learn from your mistake immediately. Reasons why we are here, share ideas, learn, be informed and get educated.

But i said to myself that even in Britain where English language originated from, English is still being taught and students still fails, but on this forum Nairaland, nobody cares. You have to be very careful or don’t post at all.

I know a lot of people that speaks fluently but can’t write, because, written communication is more formal while spoken communication allows for more 'mistakes' also Less reflection goes into spoken English than written English

Which is more difficult, English speaking OR Writing?

English writing is much difficult than spoken english in my opinion. Written english requires schooling to become good at, whereas most of us can get by putting spoken English words together without being schooled. Also, the type and quality of english language schooling in the formative ages could have made a difference for a lot more people, making it easier to learn as we grew older.

Well, I will say, speaking is much more hard. This is because it goes with alot of self confidence even if you are literate in English but lack self confidence to face the crowd. There are people that are intro-vert, they can write good english but tell them to speak, "HELL-RAIN"... They can sit behind closed door wirte constructively with well-thought-out sentences but because of lack of self-belief, they cannot contructive make public speech.

Perhaps, some of these western films and westerns sportmen and women, if you obeserved well, they blow alot of grammatical errors. Despite it is their native language. And, no-one seems to care.. they can do that and still go scort-free without questioning, why? It is because of their self-confidence.

This is what makes a good speaker of any language. And exactly what makes much more difficult!

Basic: Writing is far more difficult than speaking. Punctuation alone takes time to learn. When you're speaking, you don't add "comma" or "full-stop". But in your writing, you must show how well you can use punctuations.
on point.

If you are not literate in English you cannot write in English no matter how you can speak the language by aping others.
Majority of Nigerians who speak English cannot write correct sentences in the language.

I believe it depends on where you stay .. People that grew up in areas where english language is the major language are likely to speak fluently than people from areas where other languages are dominant. So in general,it is quite relative and not absolute.

From my point of view. We are not all equal in whatever situation we might have found each other cause everybody IQ varies. You might find someone more comfortable in writing and other in speaking, Which happens in every language but all i can pass across to the OP is that I find it much more comfortable speaking english than writing cause am just to lazy to write.

RULE OF CONCORD (subject-verb agreement)
OP failed the 1st rule of concord which says 'singular subject attracts singular verb and plural subject attracts plural verbs'.
*'...students still fails' should read '...students still fail'.
*'...people that speaks' should read '...people that speak'.
THANKS.
Re: English Speaking Versus Writing, Which Is More Difficult? by omicron(m): 3:14pm On Sep 24, 2012
Well, written English has more to do with literacy than spoken English. If one is NOT able to READ, then one will NOT be able to write. You dont need to be able to write or read English before you can speak correct English. My 3 yr old niece, for example, can speak impecable English, but she can barely write same.Writing is more difficult because it is a better reflection of education and formal learning. A lot of people who speak English as first language, including native English people, do not necessarily write good English. In the same way, an Igbo or a Yoruba person may not be able to write Igbo or Yoruba simply because he did not study those languages in High School. Writing is a more difficult art, and even makes speaking easier and more correct( writing maketh an exact mind).
