Senate Recommends Arik Air As National Carrier by mukina2: 11:03am On Sep 20, 2012
The Senate Committee on Aviation on Wednesday recommended that Arik Air be allowed to serve as Nigeria’s national carrier, a decision that has been criticised in the past.

The committee recommended that the airline, owned by Port Harcourt-based businessman, Dr. Michael Arumemi-Ikhide, should become the national carrier until the Aviation Ministry sets up a new national carrier.

Nigeria has been without a national carrier since the demise of Nigeria Airways in 2003, when most of its facilities were sold to Arik Air at giveaway prices.

Nigerian Airways was founded in 1958 after the dissolution of West African Airways Corporation. It was wholly owned by the Government of Nigeria, and once owned about 30 aircraft. But it was plagued by corruption and mismanagement and in 2003, it was heavily indebted and owned only one aircraft for domestic routes and two leased aircraft for international routes. But aviation analysts have warned that it will be Nigeria’s biggest scam if Arik became national carrier.

Arik Air is said to owe AMCON billions of naira and often struggles with staff wages and leased aircraft. With the committee’s decision, Arik Air’s debt will be transferred to Nigeria’s taxpayers, the analysts have said.Experts in the aviation sector have labelled it “a trick to settle the boys and pass the debts to the country”.

They have called on the Federal Government to set up a national carrier from scratch, using its own resources, instead of buying over debts and other liabilities. If this recommendation is adopted by the National Assembly, Arik Air will enjoy preferential rights or privileges, accorded by the government, for international operations.

The airline company will also be required to display the flag of Nigeria in all its aircrafts.

the NASS should also pass a law that will stop the harassment metted out on innocent Nigerians travelling abroad with BAGs and SACKs of GARRI which they hope to eat or trade over there. Many of then are subjected to detention cos these foreigners think the GARRI is cocaine!
How can GARRI be cocaine?
The senate has to look into this!

Arik air, hmmmmmmm...

Whatever is built on false foundation will not stand. Arik Air has defective foundation and should never be used as a precursor for a national carrier.

Recently a bridge that was built (not accross water but on solid land) as flyover in Port Harcourt collapsed because it was built on false foundation. You may wonder what is the connection between Arik Air and the collapse flyover in Port Harcourt? The reason is because the two have the same individuals that managed them: Arumeni and Odili, etc

The only sure way is to start a national carrier on clean foundation, like the Singapore Airlines, which rank among the best in the world.

However in this era of collapse of Airlines in Nigeria, the Federal Govt may choose to help consolidate Arik Air and Aero Contractors.

What a shame!
And some people are arguing that Nigerian problem is that of followership, not leadership.
What a shame!
Instead of giving the Executive a deadline to establish a National Carrier(crier: because they crash and make us cry alot), they are making another man's burden be our responsibility.

Senate, please I have a fuel station in port-harcourt, can you pass a bill to make it a refinary? Because I have pipelines transporting billions of barrels of petroleum products behind my station. Once you pass the bill and the president signs, I promise to upgrade my facility into a world class GREEN refinary.

May those who agree say: Aiiiiiii
Those who don't agree say: Nahhhhhh
THE AIIIIIII'S HAVE IT!

Wow Wow Wow. The story of Arik. How far it has come. From the ruins of PHC airport closedown during Odilli's tenure (done for political reasons), to national promience. It is desperately sad to even consider the shadow of the idea of Odilli not getting his comeuppance. There is a reason I have never flown Arik. I am not giving that thief of a man any of my money.

Due to persistent hostility of the Ministry of Aviation and FAAN management, which has culminated in the use of FAAN staff to stop our operations and lock in checked-in passengers in Lagos this morning, Arik Air has no option than to suspend all domestic operations until further notice. This issue bothers on personal interests and not payment of bills, since FAAN has been collecting their charges in advance since 18 months now. Arik Air regrets the inconveniences this disruption by FAAN would cause you. Thank you for your much valued support

Don't fly Arik air if you think there's safer company out there.
