akwa ibom: my land, my home

My Akwa-ibom state is 25

Firstly, Akwa Ibom was not named after the Qua Iboe River, if it was, the state would be called Qua Iboe State. Akwa Ibom means "the great split" or "the great break", the name is a reference to the splitting of the old Cross River state in two, present day Akwa Ibom and Cross River, which was long agitated for, by mainly the Ibibios and Annangs (who by the way don't like each other too much).

Secondly, it would be a very big stretch of the word "language" to refer to annang, ibibio and eket as different languages, at best you can call them dialects, and this includes Efik. It is correct to refer to Annang and ibibio as different tribes, but Eket is most certainly an ibibio sub-tribe, they are even part of Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, only recently has there been an attempt to carve out a different identity for them selves, mainly political reasons. I would say that ibeno people have a much more distinguishable dialect and culture and not Eket people. And Oron people are of course a largest distinguishable ethnic group/language besides the Ibibio/Annang axis.

Thirdly, can we also say Happy Silver Jubilee to Katsina State, let's not forget that Katsina and Akwa Ibom are twins, created on the same day, in the same speech, by IBB. Just because one brother is a lot wealthier than another does not mean that we should lose our sense of brotherliness.

Xtranoble: Akwa Ibom State was named after the Qua Iboe River and it is located in the coastal South-Southern part of the country, lying between latitudes 4°321 and 5°331 North, and longitudes 7°251 and 8°251 East. It is bordered on the east by Cross River State, on the west by Rivers and Abia states, and on the South by the Atlantic Ocean and the southern-most tip of Cross River State.

Akwa Ibom State was created in 1987 from the former Cross River State and its capital is Uyo. The state has an airport – Akwa Ibom International Airport – and two major sea ports on the Atlantic Ocean, with a proposed construction of a world class Ibaka Seaport at Oron.

Along with English, the main spoken languages are Ibibio, Annang, Eket, and Oron.

It was exactly 25years ago. I remember hearing the broadcast by then military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, announcing the creation of two new states, Katsina and Akwa Ibom.
As a primary 6 pupil then, who just wrote the 1987 First School Leaving Certificate Examination, little did I know our landscape will be transformed into what we are witnessing in the present.
Our school, CKS Barracks Road has been next door neighbour to the seat of power in the State. We saw what it was then, and can rightly adjudged that it has been so good with us.
While thanking our Almighty God for this privilege, we are praying and hoping that things will continue to get better as we progress to the next important milestone of our State existence.
Our leaders should continue to lead us aright with sincere political will.
We, the citizenry should continue to play our legitimate roles in ensuring our state maintain and even surpass the status and air of importance we are basking now.
Happy Silver Jubilee Celebration to the Government and all Good People of Akwa Ibom & Friends!!
