Those of you pontificating about how Dangote's offer is so demeaning to Nigerian graduates are probably detached from reality. The truth of the matter is that it is an excellent offer that seeks to kill two birds with one stone: on one hand it would at least ameliorate the terrible unemployment situation by engaging thousands of unemployed/underemployed graduates, and on the other hand, it might enhance operational standards for Dangote's fleet.

I assume the remuneration for the so-called graduate drivers would be more attractive than what many unfortunate 'coat and tie' wearing graduates earn as contract/marketing staff in one micro finance bank or insurance company or 'one-man business' or the other. Most of such graduates now earn anywhere between N30k and N50k. These ones are even lucky; a greater number of graduates wallow in total, penniless misery as they cannot even find ANY job, not even one that offers N20k/month!

Based on this ugly reality, if Dangote offers you N70k a month (along with other benefits) to work as an 'executive' truck driver, would you consider that a terrible deal? Or perhaps you'd prefer to work as a 'marketer' in a useless insurance company for N35k a month, or worse still, remain unemployed for years without N1k to your name?

Besides, Dangote is not forcefully conscripting anybody into his company to work as a driver. His offer is just that - an offer, and unemployed/underemployed graduates have the power to decide to remain in the labour market and wait for the elusive Chevron job, or accept Dangote's offer. It's really very simple. No be by force nah! We're in a democracy after all, and everyone has the right to make any offer, just as everyone else also has the right to accept or reject any offer.

The bitter truth is that things are really harsh out there; we have an unemployment crisis of unprecedented proportions on our hands, and it is rapidly getting worse - with thousands of graduates creeping out of the universities like bedbugs yearly to join their older counterparts in the over-saturated labour market. The prospects are dim, and the future, grim. Those of us that are a bit fortunate should never lose sight of the true situation out there.

On a side note, I hope our unemployed sisters, ex-campus babes in the house, would also be eager to accept this offer too oh just like they typically are with the office jobs. This is one job opportunity where I would be happy to see gender equality implemented fully, lol.

Those trailers are fully airconditioned and more comfortable than the buses and taxi cabs u hop everyday. They are factory fresh. Okay

All you need is a mindset that you are driving a haulage truck and not a sports car. You dont need large biceps to drive them.

Bros, this is essentially a matter of offer and acceptance as it goes in contract law. As long as the offer is legal, then acceptance is merely a matter of volition - you either take it or leave it, no hard feelings. If Dangote's offer is deemed outrageous and offensive, then nobody would accept it. However, there are millions of graduates that would gladly accept this offer - with thanksgiving and gratitude for that matter.

One might even argue that it is unconscionable for anyone to suggest that Dangote's offer is demeaning and should be rejected - unless such a person can provide better alternatives. As ehie pointed out, which one of you would be willing to 'dash' an umemployed graduate N50k if he needs it badly? Since you can't assist them financially, don't you think it is ridiculous for you to condemn them for accepting a job opportunity that empowers them financially at least?

Now this is funny, lol. How can he have a "passion" for driving professionally when he doesn't even know how to drive yet? I hope Dangote's HR people would conduct this recruitment exercise meticulously. We can't afford to have clueless desperados behind the wheels of massive trucks abeg. . .the accident rate on our highways is already high enough.
Re: Dangote Graduate Drivers Trainee Interview by femosky07(m): 9:10am On Sep 29, 2012
I've followed this issue of "Dangote Graduate Drivers" with very keen interest, and I've seen some really interesting comments from several people on different internet forums. Its funny how many people who criticized the scheme initially, seem to be the same people who are expecting emails for the interview..lol

I usually don't comment on Nairaland (I just read), but I thought I should say a thing or two about this topic, based on my own personal experience:

I'm currently serving in the British Army as a Logistic Supply Specialist, and as part of my training, I had to learn to drive trucks. I currently have a car licence and 2 truck licences all paid for by the Army. Acquiring a truck licence in the UK costs between £2,000 - £3,000. A lot of you might be wondering how easy it is to drive those massive things, I'll tell you honestly, its easy. There are girls in the Army who are about 5ft and quite tiny who drive these trucks with relative ease...how much more a Naija guy..lol. In the Army, we were taught with MAN trucks, these trucks are manual transmission trucks with 8 gears. Obviously, you need to already know how to drive a car before you can drive trucks, so all you have to do is be aware of the differences between a truck and a car (e.g weight, length, width etc) while driving and also with manouvres.

Regarding the relevance of having truck driving experience, let me tell you a little about myself..

I come from an IT background (Web development to be precise), I graduated here in the UK with a degree in IT & Business Information Systems (where I was introduced to Logistics & Supply Chain Management Processes and Systems). After university, I worked as an e-commerce developer with an electronics equipment supplier. I was responsible for all the online e-commerce stuff, payment integration etc..but I also learned a lot about order processing, shipping etc. I had always been fascinated by the retail industry in the UK (both online and offline), and this job exposed me to all the things that went on in the background before an item got to your front door or got on the shelves (e.g Tesco, ASDA, New Look, Asos, H&M etc)

Anyway, so I joined the Army to get my hands dirty in "Logistics & Supply"..and I'm enjoying it so far. I had to constantly tell myself "forget the fact that you have a 2:1 degree from a British university, humble yourself and learn!". Sometimes, my colleagues and even my superiors ask me why I'm here when I could easily be sat in an office. But I tell them I was sat in an office in London, I resigned and chose to do this.

My simple point is this, no knowledge is lost. Do not be put off by the fact that you're a graduate and now you're gonna be driving trucks for Dangote. The Nigerian retail market is gradually developing. Imagine what will happen when we start having more retail outlets, and you start having big retail giants from abroad setting up shop in Nigeria. Imagine that you've gained some experience in Logistics, Distribution and Haulage and managed to set up your own logistics company..think about how much money you'll make. Driving trucks is just a small part of Logistics, do not focus on the driving, think logistics!..

Hope I've been able to help someone out there. Make the best of whatever opportunity comes your way...and always be grateful.

Off to Germany tomorrow to resume my new posting...whoop whoop!!
