femosky07: .......

I'm currently serving in the British Army as a Logistic Supply Specialist, and as part of my training, I had to learn to drive trucks. I currently have a car licence and 2 truck licences all paid for by the Army. Acquiring a truck licence in the UK costs between £2,000 - £3,000.........

Regarding the relevance of having truck driving experience, let me tell you a little about myself..

I come from an IT background (Web development to be precise), I graduated here in the UK with a degree in IT & Business Information Systems (where I was introduced to Logistics & Supply Chain Management Processes and Systems). After university, I worked as an e-commerce developer with an electronics equipment supplier. I was responsible for all the online e-commerce stuff, payment integration etc..but I also learned a lot about order processing, shipping etc. I had always been fascinated by the retail industry in the UK (both online and offline), and this job exposed me to all the things that went on in the background before an item got to your front door or got on the shelves (e.g Tesco, ASDA, New Look, Asos, H&M etc)

Anyway, so I joined the Army to get my hands dirty in "Logistics & Supply"..and I'm enjoying it so far............... I resigned and chose to do this.

My simple point is this, no knowledge is lost.
Off to Germany tomorrow to resume my new posting...whoop whoop!!

@Femosky07, l wish you a good time in Germany.
I really enjoyed your post and it was inspirational.

I am one of those who think this recruitment drive, particularly targeted at "Nigerian Graduates", is insulting.
I have sad that much in my earlier post.

NOW:
I want to draw "parallels" between your post/situation...... and that of the guys being recruited here and in the process, show that "we are comparing APPLES and ORANGES....or better still, Apples and Bitter Cola".
They aint similar at all.

1.) You were already involved in the Supply-chain management, (as the online developer for a store/s) and your joining the army was to further your career in the same direction.

These guys in question would probably be those who read philosophy, Linguistics, Biology, e.t.c.... nothing related to Truck Driving! They are just hungry and unemployed!

2.) You were gainfully employed, left one job for another, that was more challenging and will further deepen your knowledge of your industry.

These guys are unemployed and desperate Youths who are being taken for a ride!
Someone said (l think pr001) that if Dangote could pay them 70K/Monthly (that's about 75GBP per week!), then they would be earning far better than some Insurance Marketers!. I dont have to ask but l am sure your own type of "truck driver" earns in the region of 600GBP every week, minus all sorts of unimaginable perks!

These guys would do anything for money, our "employers" know this and would take advantage of their desperation to the fullest.

3.) You were a graduate and was the odd one out in your unit as l am also sure that a lot of O'Level guys drive a truck. As a matter of fact, the proficiency Exams does not require that you hold a School Cert Grade.

In our own case, the advert was specifically targeted at "Nigerian Graduates", a psychological onslaught on their mental psyche!.

It's not that we dont have illiterates that drive Trailers (many of them are, especially the mallams of Dangote's extraction) and its not that we dont still have thousands of them who still want to drive Trailers for a living, ......it is that he recognized the level of embarrassing unemployment amongst Nigerian Youths....and he is poised to "rub it on their face" after all, do they have a better choice?

4.) While it is good to "be grateful" for little mercies, INDIGNITY is a word that creeps in, when one is very desperate......especially unlike the U.K and other Western countries where "Social Cushion Payments" does not allow you to degenerate to the level of abject and dehumanizing poverty. This is where these Graduate Trailer drivers are coming from!

Let me quote a supporter of this recruitment in an earlier post "@pr001: The bitter truth is that things are really harsh out there; we have an unemployment crisis of unprecedented proportions on our hands, and it is rapidly getting worse - with thousands of graduates creeping out of the universities like bedbugs yearly to join their older counterparts in the over-saturated labour market. The prospects are dim, and the future, grim. Those of us that are a bit fortunate should never lose sight of the true situation out there." End of quote.

This is how different the situation of these guys, are to yours.

If this Dangote is really concerned about ameliorating the unemployment situation in the country (not minding that he is one of those who have exploited and profiteered from the brazen corruption, kick-backs and unethical business practices which throw-up Billionaires in a tiny few and makes poverty a staple food of hundreds of million of Nigerians), I suggested that he sets up a "dignifying" project that would, as in your case, further the career aspirations of this Graduates, in their qualified field.

*Mechanised farming
*Auto Industry
*Bio-technology
*Computer Manufacture and or Assembly
*High-Tech manufacturing

Let him continue to train and re-train (as the Army has done for you) those reckless murderers that drive his rickety and dangerous Trailers (none of his Trailers will ever drive a Kilometer on British road without being impounded and CRUSHED right away!)

You dont need to be a Graduate to drive a TRAILER. My point.
So, why make the entry-bar a "Graduate level Position"?

How would it sound if one Mr. Bruton wants to recruit Truck Drivers and puts out an advert in the U.K Times, saying Minimum Qualification: University Graduate
? shocked shocked

What do you think will happen?
A riot, a Parliamentary hearing and a very big, punitive sanction on Mr. Bruton, for bringing her Majesty's regime to disrepute and public opprobium!

But in Nigeria, we have descended so low to the level that "dignity in Labor and sanctity of Life itself" has vamoosed from our dictionary!

The problem does not just lie with Dangote alone, it lies even more with the kleptomaniacs we have in and out of government who despite all the wealth of the land they have stolen, can only lodge same in Swiss banks, under their bed and where they decide to "launder it" into legit business, they do so with some uncanny, evil ruthlessness that can only be allowed in a place like Nigeria.

*They would not help the poor if that act would not get them adequate publicity!
*They would not set-up business to employ people except the government is willing to give them a Monopoly which allows them to further exploit the poor citizens (read as DANGOTE)
*Where they even propose employment, they would structure the interview process in away that the few that eventually get the job would be so demoralized, ridiculed and made to feel that giving them that job is a big privilege!

Compare the acts of our own Billionaires with that of "secret Billionaires" in the Western world who go about ANONYMOUSLY, helping people in 'real need" and demanding that their identity be not revealed!
That is altruistic as against our own "ego-massaging" rich men.

I dont envy them but l pity our Youths......that in a country so blessed with "free natural resources", we can not be like a UAE, QUATAR, BRITISH or SAUDI GRADUATE, who on graduation, can boast that "life is just about to begin"!

In our own case, it is N.Y.S.C (Now Your Suffering Begins!) angry cry cry

Cheers.

@last page, i totally love your write up but you are forgetting one MAJOR important issue. Nigeria is not Britain or any other advance country where things go straight.
We are in a country where corruption runs wild and vile and its either eat or you are eaten. Take it or leave it the only way things will get better is if the whole lot of our politicians are killed.
That being said i applied for the dangote job because to me its just a means to an end, its a trainee program and the pay is good so i believe the advantages over rides the disadvantages.
So since you didnt apply probably because your father stole money and you are comfortable pls dont go hating on those of us that are unemployed

My friend let Dangote advertise this job as an open recruitment to all level of education and state the range of renumeration you and i kno that na graduate go still full the interview Bros their are better ways and better heading to advertise such job that wil stil attract graduate I am callinng on any affected body to such advert and take drastic action its not good for Nigeria educational system let forget about just food on our table let all be brave and die like men. Let not one mIan diminish our future more private companies are coming to invest into power, refinaries and lot more they will need nigerian graduate to carryout the task of the engineering and lot more so guys dangote advert is not portraying nigerian graduate in the right manner.

@last page what is your concern if i pick up driving job as a graduate. let me ask you how many of the great men of today and the past started their career as a graduate, most of them have no formal education, I am from Igbo extraction and know's what it takes to start life if you hv nobody behind you. Dat I pick up driving job doesnt mean I will end up as a driver. Most of the big transportation companies do you know hw dey started, most of them started as drivers. I know you dont have job and your psych will land you into abject poverty. Foolish boy bet me not evryone will qualify for the job. I am a firstclass graduate I applied for the job, come block me dat day of interview make i finish you.

If Oregun is located in Ketu then I am sorry boss you are not familiar with that area. The interview venue is behind philip house and that is ojota bus-stop. When coming from ur village just drop at ojota and make enquiries and please it is better you come a day before cuz I don't think they want to listen to excuses such as "I am not living in Lagos that's why I am late" remember "puntuality is the soul of business".

Best wishes to all of you. May this be a stepping stone to bigger things to come your way in life.
To those traveling for the interview, have a safe trip to & fro.

P.S- you may be asked how much you expect to earn during your interview. Best to be informed about this. Perhaps nothing less than 150-200k? Frankly, I don't know.
Also, you may be asked why you decided to take this career path. I suggest you answer along the lines of "no experience or knowledge is a waste. Looking forward to acquiring the experience that can enable me start off something of my own in future"
Just suggesting o!

Good luck guys!
