JOHANNESBURG, Oct 1 – The trial of a presumed militant leader accused of masterminding two deadly bombings at Nigeria’s 50th independence celebrations two years ago opens Monday in South Africa, his lawyer said.
Nigerian national Henry Okah is facing trial in South Africa, where he has permanent residence, on charges that he orchestrated the twin car bombings which killed 12 people in Abuja on October 1, 2010.

Okah, the presumed leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), also faces terrorism charges over two explosions in March 2010 in the southern Nigerian city of Warri, a major hub of the oil-rich Delta region.

“It’s Okah’s first day of trial in the South Gauteng High Court today. The defence and prosecution teams are ready to proceed with the matter and a judge has been allocated,” his lawyer Tsietsi Majang told AFP.

The case was last in court in January when lawyers had asked for more time to prepare their arguments.

South Africa is trying Okah as part of its international obligations because Nigerian authorities have not applied for his extradition, according to the prosecution.

Okah has denied involvement in the attacks, which were claimed by MEND, and also denies being the leader of the group which is fighting for a greater share of the Delta region’s oil wealth.

If found guilty he will face 10 years imprisonment. If not it will be disgraceful thing for the Nigerian government. There is going to be some lobbying and money changing hands in this case from both sides.

Do we have a government in this country?
Why does every single Nation on planet earth look down on Nigeria and flag it in from of us that we are good in nothing else but corruption?

South Africa HAS NO RIGHT to try Henry Okah.
The alleged crimes were parpetrated in Nigeria and NOT South Africa so they soth extradit him back to Nigeria and let him face his trial here.

Jonathan should stop playing politics with the citizens of Nigeria. Enough is Enough.

Both the december and March bombing, Okah was in South Africa, if our security agents couldn't perform their duties to catch the main people who planted the act, then why rope Okah for both crimes (he hasn't even confessed to).

Ibori was sent to face trial in London because that was where he laundered money to.

Lanre Shittu was flown to USA to face trial because that was were he committed his drug trafficking and money laundering.

So therefore, Okah should be sent back to Nigeria to face his trial here.

Enough of Us selling out our citizens.

South Africa isn't International Court Of Justice so they lack the merit and power to try Okah for a crime committed in Nigeria.

Mr Okah is being tried under laws that stipulate that South Africa is obliged to try him as he has been a resident in the country and now has South African citizenship.

"Based on the information we have and how we are approaching this case we are confident that we will get a positive conviction," South Africa's National Prosecution Authority spokesperson Phindile Louw told the BBC.

He has been in custody in South Africa ever since his arrest in October 2010 and his lawyers say they want to make a fresh application for bail.

@Acid, please read the above, there is a law that the SA goverment is acting on. The accused has been a resident and is now a citizen of SA. Meaning they can try him unders SA laws. Why do you guys always insult other countries when exercising their laws. You cannot want multiple citizenships if you cannot be bound by their laws.

Just quit insulting other countries. If he is not guilty it will determined in court.

The alleged crime is against the Nigerian people. i wonder why the Nigerian government hasn't requested for his extradiction. he should be tried in Nigeria not SA. There is more to this trial no doubt.

Bros we nigeria are not capable of convicting nigerian members of power which is why they get away with all the nonesense they do

if his trial is in nigeria do you really think he will get sentenced with a system as corrupt as ours?

as much as we are putting ourselves down by having the trial in SA its the best thing to do to bring him to justice, if hes innocent he walks if hes not let them lock him up and throw away the key, thats one less evil bastard to worry about

henry okah holds a south african PR.As such could be tried in SA under South African law.Besides, how many big time crooks tried in naija ever got what they deserve?Ibori was aquitted despite overwhelming evidences in naija, thank God for UK judicial system,Ibru was sent to a 6 months 5 star hospital incaceeration, bode george got 2 years but living like a king in prison, with servants at his beck and call, his rolli visiting him there for his conjugal rights steady and big time pdp stalwarts even arranging meetings right there with him. Please, let him tried in SA and get proper conviction.
