As much as I love this show, I have to admit that that was a weak season finale. It started off good in the first few minutes with the Governor, Milton, and Andrea in that room. The Governor's line when leaving the room "in this life you kill or you die, or you die and then you kill" was especially good, but the rest of the episode wasn't that great. Some of it was predictable and the parts that weren't predictable seemed very implausible.

The first problem was Andrea having a chat with Milton instead of only focusing on picking up the pliers with her feet even though she knew he would soon be turning into a zombie and would be coming after her. Or she could have at least attempted to pick up the pliers while chatting with him if she felt that she absolutely had to chat with him and respond to his last words.

The second problem was the scene where the Governor goes psycho and kills almost all his "soldiers" when they refuse to head back to the prison and fight. The guy who lost his son in the previous episode should have just shot the Governor if he was going to raise his gun at the Governor in protest at the killing of all those people. I guess they were showing that he didn't really have the guts to take down the leader of Woodbury, but the way the Governor killed him made no sense: when the governor started slowly reaching for his pistol, and then slowly took it out, the other guy should have realized that the Governor was going to shoot him just as he shot those other people and then just shot the governor first. If they were trying to highlight the mindless obedience to authority that people can display even when it makes no sense to do so and even when their own lives are clearly threatened, they did it in a way that just isn't believable.

Andrea's death at the end was obvious and it wasn't moving in any way since she had already become an unlikeable character at that point, the way Rick's group flushed the Woodbury invaders out of the prison was too easy, and the way the writers/producers left the Governor's situation and whereabouts at the end of the episode completely mysterious was annoying. I also didn't like that mushy and sentimental conversation between Rick and Michonne earlier in the episode and I thought that Carl's anger over not being able to take part in the "fight" (which was barely a fight) to defend the prison seemed too strong and not justified/believable.

Honestly, this season finale wasn't anywhere near as good as the finales of seasons 1 and 2. Also the overall season itself was a bit less thrilling than the previous two, although it had some great moments - especially in the first half of the season that ended in December. The second half of this season just wasn't as good and they took a step down in quality and also slowed things down too much. Hopefully the next season is less slow, cuts down on the gratuitous religious references and excessive ghostly hallucinations, and involves them actually leaving that prison at some point early on. They need to head to somewhere less constrained so that more interesting things can actually happen in the show.

I agree with those who say that Carl made the right choice. Hershel was clueless in that episode, and the fact that nobody really corrected Hershel to his face and shut him up is another thing about the episode that sucked.

The truth is that the kid was told to put down his weapon, but instead of putting the weapon down on the ground and putting his hands up, he said he would "hand it over" and started inching closer and closer to Carl to "hand over" the weapon. That's not the behavior of someone who is scared or who is really looking to surrender. The kid's behavior could reasonably be interpreted by Carl or any character with a brain as an attempt to get Carl to use one of his hands to reach for the kid's gun while it's being handed over and to also distract Carl.

The kid could have been trying to make Carl turn his eyes on the kid's gun for a brief moment so that the kid can disarm Carl or knock the gun out of Carl's other hand while one of his hands is busy with the task of receiving the kid's gun. Or even worse, it could have been an attempt by the kid to get just close enough to knock Carl out by striking him with the end part of his gun or an attempt to get close enough to shoot Carl outright or shoot somebody else in the group.

This accusation from Hershel against Carl should be dropped and forgotten completely in season 4 because it's so inane that nobody watching the show would be able to suspend their disbelief and accept that Hershel had a valid complaint.

I believe Carl made a justifiable decision/mistake whichever it was. It is not that the boy was not dropping his weapon. I don't buy that justification. No doubt he was completely surrendering, but the point is that in the bush was Carl (a little boy regardless of the hat and sheriff badge), Beth (a barely older little girl who probably can't really handle a weapon) and Hershel (a disabled elderly man), that is it no one else. Meanwhile there were a sizeable number of guys attacking, not too far from their location. What were they going to do with a prisoner? Who would have kept an eye on him so he wouldn't try something while Carl safeguarded them from ambush, Beth? Whom amongst them would have physically restrained him? How sure could Carl be that they would be able to handle taking him prisoner if he tried to run, thereby revealing their presence to the sizeable force not far from where they were? Most importantly, what if there were more of the Guv's fleeing soldiers coming behind him and these ones might not be boys but full grown men. How would he have been able to deal with such a situation with little girl Beth, disabled Hershel and a prisoner in tow. There are situation where it is much safer not to take prisoners. It would have been a different matter if it was Glenn, Maggie and Daryl as there would be more than enough expertise amongst them to handle any eventuality, but Carl couldn't afford to take a chance that could have killed them all.

Its cold, but there are times when you have to take the safest path even it if it can be unfair to others.

This is also a good point.

I still think that if it were a real life situation and he had dropped his weapon and walked away slowly with his hands up, he wouldn't get killed since they probably would have not felt okay about shooting a completely unarmed man in the back, even if he was a risk. But you're right that Carl probably realized that the guy could have come possibly come back later for them with a stronger force as backup and had them killed. So even if he had dropped his weapon as asked, he would still have been a serious threat. Any way one looks at it, Carl made the right choice.

If the writers keep pushing this Carl vs. Hershel angle when season 4 starts, even when any viewer with a brain knows that Carl's choice was prudent, then it will be obvious that they're just desperately looking for a new source of tension between the characters, no matter how unrealistic it is. I hope they drop the whole issue.

Showdown time: The Guv is ready to destroy the prison and exterminate Rick and co once and for all. They roll up and breach the fences as well as a few booby traps along the way before reaching the main complexes. The guv sends in his army ready to end this. Meanwhile the remaining prison group hear the commotion and realize the Guv is here. They take up defensive positions and are ready to fight. The Guv's army make its way into the main prison complex, then into the cell blocks where the prison group have been staying thanks to the inside information they have been supplied but are surprised to find them seemingly empty, yet they keep pressing further into the structure. Soon they hit more booby traps, smoke bombs and teargas goes off, the loud sirens are activated and panic ensues. Clever placed booby trap grenades and other explosives go off after being tripped by some of the guys beating a hasty retreat, and they blockade the Guv's army in the prison complexes while killing and injuring some of the fleeing men (this is clever use Rick made of the excess ammo earlier, by setting traps in cell block and prison complex they previously resided). Meanwhile Glenn, Maggie and Carol engage the guys who didn't enter the main complex and look to take out anyone who manages to make it past the blockade from strategic positions. Rick had earlier decided to move the prison group from the cell block they previously occupied to another section of the prison pending their departure, while making it look like they were still in the previous location Smart and lucky. Meanwhile as the Guv is deciding how to proceed, there is one more surprise waiting for them besides the gas, smoke and sirens. The walls, gates e.t.c that had kept out the walkers that had over ran other areas of the prison had been opened, compromised/removed and walkers are pouring in at rapid pace attracted by the sirens and commotion. Guv and his main lieutenants try to maintain order and deal with the situation but true to the Guv’s previous observation (we are survivors, not soldiers) his army is being easily turned into walker chomp thanks to mass panic and indiscipline. This is why Rick was insistent on seeing Daryl before leaving, so he wouldn't come back and walk into a trap. Meanwhile Glenn and co after waiting and eliminating the external intruders who weren’t inside the complex decides it’s time to leave, as it’s getting more dangerous and Rick knows which way they are going and can catch up to them.

Back at Woodbury, Milton performs a mini-coup d'etat saving Tyrese and Sasha from a gruesome end; he later discovers Andrea and frees her as well. Andrea is ready to leave and ask Milton to come with, as only God knows what the Guv will do to him when returns and discovers his actions. Milton decides to stay in Woodbury but wishes Andrea well and they say their goodbyes. Andrea heads to the prison to find out what happened to her friends, she is accompanied by Tyrese and Sasha who aren't hanging around Woodbury for the Guv's possible return.

Glenn & Maggie returns after a brief area scout (also switching off the sirens) and report that seemingly the Guv and his guys are all dead. They and the others are set to leave but are ambushed by the Guv, Martinez and another of his henchmen who have survived their horrific ordeal and discovered their location. Glenn manages to kill one but the Martinez injures and disables him. They are all taken hostage. The Guv is not a happy man, in fact he seems pretty unhinged as Rick and co have somehow managed to destroy what he had fought so hard to build. Woodbury is all but done with the losses he has suffered today. Right now he is ready for nothing but bloodletting and lots of torment. He is looking for Rick and Michonne who aren't with the group and decides to wait with them as Rick will certainly come looking for his family eventually and Michonne will be with him. While waiting the Guv feels it’s a good opportunity to get better acquainted with the other members. He has already met Rick, Michonne, Daryl, Merle and Hershel. Also has intimate knowledge of Glenn, Maggie and Andrea from their time in his company, maybe time to get to know the others as well, particularly Beth. Hershel isn’t going to sit there and take Guv’s open taunting and barely veiled threat and is promptly killed, with the Guv promising send his daughters to join him but not before he is done with them. Cut long story short, the Guv promises to kill them all, but some won’t die immediately as he has devilish torments for them first. Rick, Michonne and Daryl finally arrive back at the prison discovering the Guv and his boys have made an appearance. They discover the situation and plan a move. Shootout ensues and Daryl kills Martinez in the most bad ass way possible but the Guv grabs baby Judith and forces Rick to stand down. Rick manages to put down the Guv but not quickly enough to save Judith. Showdown is finally concluded, Rick and co have been put through hell and suffered serious losses. At the conclusion Hershel and Judith are dead and others badly injured (Glenn and Carol). Andrea, Tyrese and Sasha reach the prison (which is getting more and more unsafe with random walkers roaming around thanks to previous events) and after searching discover the carnage as well as Rick and what is left of the group, distraught, emotionally drained and significantly down after their ordeal. They need to go, night is approaching and the prison is no longer the safe haven it once was. The walkers will soon reclaim it. END

babawarunn: I don't think the season finale sucked. If there had been a heavy shoot out btw the 2 groups,Rick's group would have been heavily depleted;and only a handful of survivors from Rick's group would remain. The only thing I have against this season is the death of Merle. He was a likeable character, more like the T-Bag of the show;they shouldn't have killed his character this early in the show.As for Andrea, I say good riddance;I wouldn't miss her as she was becoming dumber as the show progressed.

yea true...woulda been serious slaughter
it was ok for merle to die imho...death of major characters once in a while is ok...
