Leadership by example. In modern countries, their mayors (London, NY) use the public train becos of reduction in greenhouse gases, and they encourage all to do so. Some MPs in London ride bicycles to work. In Nigeria, govt officials MUST have very log convoys with escorts harassing ppl. Even their wives and relatives have some degree of convoy. AND YOU PREACH TO US TO WALK ABOUT WHEN YOU HAVEN'T SHOWN EXAMPLE. Na wa o. Why don't you make it a policy for your govt officials first............... 1 Like |

This is very true by Fashola. I vehemently believe in what he is saying. People needs to endeavor to walk. When I travel out of the country, i walk bitterly and i am used to it right now.But they say, when you are in Rome, do what the Romans do. So when i am in Lagos, i guess i use okada instead of me walking..But i do know i try to walk a short distance.. I urge all Lagosians and Nigerians to walk the street. If you walk the street, babes can see fine fine boys and fine boys can see d babes. That way, Nigerians become true to themselves and they will appreciate you for walking alongside with them. 3 Likes |

nifemi01: That's a nice suggestion by fashola. Because when you run affairs of a state like Lagos, you are always a moving target for dangerous people. You people always point out the irrelivant instead of taking in the aspect of the speach that can benefit you and your family. Which in this case the health benefit of walking. This governor is talking about issues that are important to individual citizens. So next time you are walking around with your big belly and thinking that is a sign of good life, just think it about your self as a thicking time bomb that is about to explode with your precious life in the process. |

Nice suggestion.....but I can bet my life, some NIGERIANS have no clue, FASHOLA is totally up to date, very much in line with modern day and full of positive thinking. In London, some MP's and Business men are always cycling or taken public transport to work and people only drive when it's necessary and all about their FUCKING 4*4. It also means you are looking after your environment and killing one another with carbonmonoxide that's already taken over the country with BLOODY GENERATOR. |

Oga Sir, "Akpangbo" is that somewhere in Enugu or Imo.....cos I'm sure there is nowhere like that in Lagos. We only have "Apangbo" redsun: Actually from ojulegba to akpangbo is a walking distace, people doesnt need vehicles for that.Walking helps to check potbelly,it saves money,it reduces congestion on the roads and saves the environment. |

Re: Fashola Urges Lagosians To Walk Rather Than Drive Whenever Possible by AjanleKoko: 1:33pm On Oct 17, 2012 |
There are a number of reasons why people don't like to walk in Lagos: 1. Weather. It's usually very hot during the day. Not conducive for health. 2. Environment: The streets are usually dirty and dusty, with little or no walkways. Strolling with slippers will most likely leave your feet covered in dust and dirt. 3. Security: After dusk, your chances of being mugged, raped, or kidnapped by ritual killers increase exponentially. 4 Traffic: Okadas remain a menace to pedestrians, much more than motorists. They take over the sidewalks. |
Re: Fashola Urges Lagosians To Walk Rather Than Drive Whenever Possible by Twy: 1:36pm On Oct 17, 2012 |
It is just a load of clearly crafted speech to fit into designated audience. Truth be told, the government can't encourage working without adequate space designed for pedestrians. I like walking but I later found out that the pavements are sometimes uncleaned or blocked gutters and some roads do not have a covered drainage for pedestrians. It is obvious Dr Folami is not a real walker or jogger, because if he is one, security, pedestrian safety and pedestrian space/clean covered drainage is lacking in Lagos leading many to walk or jog within their estate with good infrastructures and security. Increase security less robbery and good infrastructure will increase the pedestrian rate even without promotion. |

Venchy: Nice suggestion.....but I can bet my life, some NIGERIANS have no clue, FASHOLA is totally up to date, very much in line with modern day and full of positive thinking. Well the London I know has a superb transportation system for non motorist. Lots of pedestrian walkways, subways/pedestrian bridge, raised kerbs, dropped kerbs, pelican crossing, tucan crossing, zebra, traffic ramps, signalled controlled pedestrian crossing, coloured pathways, cycle lane, advanced cycle lanes, bicycle parks e.t.c Infact you would be glad you left your car at home. These facilities you would rarely see in Lagos. Even when you do, you have to be very careful. I almost got hit by a keke marwa rider on a zebra crossing close to the governors office. And it's common knowledge that okada riders would knock you down on a pedestrian walk way as well. Good idea Fashola but we need 21st century pedestrian facilities. LAMATA needs to step up its game, they are outdated and too carried away with brt system of 1974. |
