- Rover K-Series

Rover engineers developed a light weight engine called K-series in 1988 which received a lot of appreciation for its innovative technology. Initially the engine was launched with 1.1-litre and 1.4-litre capacity which was later increased to up to 2.5-litre V6 specification.

- Austin A-Series

A-Series engine from Austin isa very powerful engine seen in car models like Austin A30, Austin A40, Minor, Allegro, Maestro, Metro and even Montego. This engine is known for its quick response and power. Equipped in the one of the world’s most popular hatches Mini, the Austin’s engine confirmed its superiority. The engine was introduced about 50 years ago and is still to retain its position as one of the most frugal car engine for the next 50 years to come.

- Rolls-Royce V8

The Rolls Royce V8 is a smooth and simply structured engine that delivered commendable performance. Gradually, as new technologies started entering the market the engine was modified and upgraded for relatively higher performance and fuel efficiency. The V8 engine became more powerful when the turbocharger was strapped to it.

- BMW V12

The BMW V12 engine with 6.1-litre engine capacity was exclusively designed for the McLaren F1 supercar by the Motorsport Division. The racing car manufacturer had presented the proposal of V12 engine to different firm and it was finally accepted by the M-Sport. It was a tough job to develop an engine with an output of 621 bhp without a turbo or supercharger, electrifying performance and spine-tingling sound effects. Itwas one of the most sizzling creations

- Alfa Romeo Boxer

The engine was named as Boxer because of the fact that its pistons are positioned horizontally opposite to each other. It reveals one of the most important engine layouts. The concept of the boxer was developed by the talented engineer Karl Benz in 1896. Karl Benz was a German mechanical engineer who designed and developed world’s first practical automobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine.

- Porsche Flat Six

The Flat Six from Porsche was one of the most successful engines that showed its presence for many years in different forms. This engine came into existence in the 1964 with the capacity of 2.0-litre. The engine made its first debut in air-cooled form in the Porsche 911. Though initially the engine was seen with the 2.0-litre capacity, later for the 1993 Porsche models it was increased to a capacity of 3.6-litres. In 1998 with help of the innovative technology, the Flat Six engine came up with the new water-cooled version which was completely different from the traditional version. The latest version of this engine is seen with 3.8-litre that delivers amazing performance despite the rigid modern regulations.

Top 10?? grin The Rover K-Series was one of the worst engines to come from Austin-Rover. It was lightweight, due in part to its all-aluminum construction. However, it had an inherent weakness, that was never rectified all through its production life.

Like most aluminum blocks of its era, it had steel cylinder liners. The base of these liners were suspended on thick rubber rings, in the bottom of the crankcase. This was where the weakness began. These rubber rings became hard and brittle, and as a result, the steel liners sagged in the block, leading to loss of contact with the cylinder head gasket. In most cases, before head gasket failure became obvious, the aluminum block would overheat. Unlike a conventional cast-iron block, the spaces between the steel liners and the aluminum block formed the water passages. This design made the engine incredibly light, but left it vulnerable, and very intolerant to overheating. By the time the temperature gauge registered there was a problem, it was too late.

Rover replaced thousands of these engines when the cars were new, free of charge, when failure occurred very early in the car's lives. For this reason, a substantial budget was set aside for warranty work, a loss which was not easily recovered from.

The Rover K-series was available in the following guises:

1,1L I4 SOHC 8V.
1,4L I4 SOHC 8V.
1,4L I4 DOHC 16V.
1,6L I4 DOHC 16V.
1,8L I4 DOHC 16V.
2,0L I4 DOHC 16V.
2,5L V6 2 x DOHC 24V.

The open block design didn't help reliability either, though it kept the weight down. The blocks were also known to flex in operation, which also contributed to cylinder head gasket sealing issues.

The British Leyland / Austin A-Series is a very powerful engine?? undecided Where did you get this from? With engine capacity from 803cc (0,8L) to 1,275cc (1,3L), they can't be described as "very powerful." Power output ranged from 28 - 73 bhp, or 94 bhp for turbo models (MG Metro Turbo).

How can this be described as a "very powerful engine?" Or is this simply a ploy to get your blog visited?

Why? At least the V8 BMW M3 engine should be on the list.

A very powerful engine but relative to what it's installed in.

I rebuilt a stock 1275cc A engine to 1380cc and topped it with a supercharger. Dynoed, it came out at 177hp. Yes, that's nothing to write home about when you install it in a modern almost 5,000 pound car. This was installed in my 1970 Austin Mini that weighed in at 1,300 pounds with a full load of gas and a driver. Do the math on the power to weight ratio.

The A series engine continues to be impressive today because we now found out that the new MINI superchargers as well as BMW K series motorcycle cylinder heads works on it. Mates are getting up to 250 horsepower but the final drive surfers especially when launched hard.

Astute autoists knows that it's not all about raw horsepower.

Kudos to OP for the write up of his opinion.
